Here’s how to give your sprouts the nutrition of wild food!

After yesterday’s post about making super-sprouts and veggies, we got a lot of questions about how to do it…

So today, I’m going to explain!

A while back, we did a complete video on how to grow sprouts and how to make your own sprouting jar at half the cost.

I’m going to share this video now, as well as spell it out for you below in writing!

Here are the instructions written out for ya’ll (I’m not from the south, but I felt like pretending today!)

How to Make Your Own Sprouting Jar

Step 1: Purchase any large mason jar from the grocery store and make sure the lid comes in two parts.

Step 2: Purchase a roll of screening (stainless steel if possible) from your local hardware store. (You may be able to buy the mason jars there too!)

Step 3: Purchase a box cutter or a retractable utility knife.

Step 4: Take the top off the mason jar and remove the inner top, so that you just have the piece that screws on.

Step 5: Place that piece on top of the screening and cut around it in a circle with the utility knife.

Step 6: Remove the circular screening and put inside the screw top.

Step 7: Screw this on the mason jar.

You now have a homemade sprout jar!

How to Sprout

Step 1: Use Oceangrown to soak and wash your sprouts. 100:1 ratio, so it goes a long way. 1/4 teaspoon is on milliliter. This will minerlize the seeds.

Step 2: Soak your seeds — time depends on type of seeds — in a bowl or your sprouting jar. Generally 8-12 hours.

Step 3: After soaking rinse your sprouts well 2-3 times.

Step 4: Place your jar out of direct sunlight and keep it at an angle so any extra liquid can run out and air can get in. Rinse 2-3 times a day with diluted Oceangrown Solution or water.

Step 5: Depending on the sprouts do this for generally about 6-7 days. Then they’ll be ready to eat.

Step 6: Store them in the fridge, but dry them well in a salad spinner before to make sure there’s less chance of growing mold.

There you have it! Awesome sprouts, awesome nutrition!

  1. I’m sorry, but the Oceangrown is so enormously expensive it is way, way, way out of our price range. We grow lovely sprouts without the aid of this very expensive additive. Nice, but who on earth can afford this? One of the beefs I have with so many things like this offered on the internet in the health food category is their expense. One wonders just what the actual cost to make is for many of the things seen that cost an arm and a leg and then some. Sometimes I think that those who produce these products just don’t live in the real world where jobs are hard to come by or they target the wealthy. Most of what is offered on the Renegade site I can’t even begin to afford, and when the shipping is added in, it becomes a total impossibility. Yes, I am venting. I hear about these wonderful products, and when I check them out, the prices are only for those who are reasonably well heeled. We are struggling just to keep our house and still get our health back after growing up on the SAD and contracting chronic illness in the process. We know many people like ourselves that are struggling also. Just like the online buying clubs – once again the wealthy are targeted with no availability to ordinary middle class families.

    why not use a wee bit of kelp powder dissolved in water and use that on the sprouts? – it’s ocean grown too. by themselves, sprouts already seem to have lots of nutrients that enable them to burst into life.

    In explaining the Ocean Grown and the quantity you put in the jar, you said, ‘eight of these’. Was that 8 1/2 tsps. or tsp? I never really know how much Ocean Grown to use in a quantity of water.

    Chris- I believe he used a 1 milliliter spoon to measure the Ocean Grown. The ratio is 1ml:100ml, it was an 800 ml jar.

    thanks for the video. i have trouble finding a
    local source for sprout seeds so i get them on the internet. great for adding to a wrap, or eating raw with some guacamole and tomatoes.
    presently, i am making kombucha and water kefir.
    why isnt water kefir available at typical health food store?

    I grow my own sprouts – pretty easy. At the end, I kinda rub and rinse the sprouts to remove most of the seeds that are left.

    I began sprouting before you could buy them in stores. That was years ago!! I used sprouts as a source of inexpensive and healthy salad food. I always had a sprout bag or two on my back pack when I traveled. They are light and travel well if you know how to properly care for them. My very favorite sprouts are mung, fenugreek and radish YUMM! They mix together as a perfect nourishing salad full of nutrients. Mung bean sprouts are really tasty and easy. Radish sprouts are so good for the liver and the gallbladder. Fenugreek sprouts are really tasty. One of the benefits of it is that it helps soothe gut problems and it detoxifies your cells. After you have been eating it for awhile it out gases in your sweat – I love the smell of it! It is so easy to sprout and so yummy!! It is the one that I always choose when I am teaching kids how to sprout. YUM.

    I’ve been growing sprouts for a couple of years. The ocean solution will make a great addition. I have some and have been adding it to the watering can for my plants, but will use it for sprouts too! Thanks.

    Thanks for the demo. I did sprouting several years ago but got too busy to continue. Recently my sked changed so I’ve been giving some thought to resuming the practice. Ocean Grown seems like a nice improvement over my old way of going to the beach and bringing back seaweed, soaking it for a week or so then straining the water before putting it on the seeds. Even though I had extra minerals, this is surely an improvement. Thanks for reminding me of what I had been wanting to do anyway. BTW, I have also used the plastic screen for the top, but I now want to use metal hardware cloth–better durability and maybe even reduced chance of pollution from the plastic leaching into the water.

    Hi, All!

    I wanted to solve this mystery of knowing how to figure out my solution to water ratio, and what I did was I figured out how many tablespoons were in a gallon – 256. Then, divided by 100 (this is easy I know ;)), it comes up to 2.56. In this case I’d round down just because I would be dealing with tablespoons. So, for every gallon jug you could pre-mix with 2.5 tablespoons. They sell this by the quart so, you would be getting 64 gallons of pre-mixed solution from each quart. Just an FYI for anyone interested.

    Oops! Big correction… So, the oceansgrown solution yields 25.6 gallons, not 64. My apologies :/. 🙂
