GMO Labeling Law on the California Ballot — One Small Step for No GMO-Kind : Exclusive Renegade Health Article

We need your help to keep food food.

Over the next few days, you’ll hear a lot of news about a GMO labeling law being accepted on the California ballot in November 2012…

This means if the majority of Golden State voters are in favor of labeling GMO foods on the supermarket shelf at the end of this year, then all food manufacturers will have to disclose — on their packaging — that their product contains (or is) a genetically modified ingredient.

Since the public has been polled and is not in favor of eating GMO foods, this is good news for people who want to know what they’re eating, but a sticky situation for the food companies. Some polls say up to 90% of people said they would not eat a GMO food if they were given a choice. This means that labeling these foods, could cause people to spend their money on products that don’t contain these ingredients.

Bad news for those who profit on this technology — and have invested billions and billions of dollars into it.

But it’s hesitatingly-awesome news for you and I (since we want real food, as nature intended.)

I say hesitatingly-awesome, not only because I like making up words (which I really do), but because I consider this only one step — not a giant leap — in the process of getting your food labeled and exercising your freedom to know what the heck you’re eating — your continued action and support is needed.

Probably even more so than ever before.

Now the real fight begins…

There’s a lot of money invested in genetically modified foods — billions of dollars. There’s also a ton of expected profit — hundreds of years of profit — into the trillions of dollars.

Basically, in layman’s terms, they’ve found out that if you change the DNA of a plant and put your own creative (mutant) spin on it — genetic modification — you can patent it and profit from it. That’s what a GMO is.

If the food companies can control the patents on everything that we eat they can sit back and collect on licensing, the sale of seeds and any other way they can profit on controlling the food chain for generations.

It’s the ultimate business play. Make profit on something that everyone has to do. (Just wait until they find a way to profit on the air we breathe… it may be coming sooner than we think.)

So here’s the thing. Everything was going along fine for the food companies, until some “crazy” (labeled by the government and industry) scientists started to question how good these new, engineered foods are for the earth — and ultimately your health and wellbeing.

What they found was that is seemed more prudent — in the professional opinions of these scientists — to not unleash this technology around the globe before there was concrete science that proved they were completely safe for the environment and your own health.

Unfortunately, the food companies, decided to ignore these professional opinions, discredit these scientists and start to release these foods into the marketplace.

You see, they don’t want you or anyone else to think that GMO foods like corn, soy, canola, and others — with this mutant DNA — are any different than the food you’re eating now. It’s bad for business.

If they can show you that an ear of GMO corn looks just like an organically grown ear of corn, they’re pretty sure you won’t care what its DNA looks like. And if you don’t care, then they can still collect money on their patents and their seeds and associated products.

So now that a GMO labeling law is on the California ballot, it is in their best interest to “educate you” on why GMO foods are just the same — or better — than the food we’re eating now.

And, believe me, they’re going to put up a fight.

So right now, I want arm you with some ammunition (no, not guns or anything) that will help you understand what they will say and what it really means.

Here are the 4 “education points” they’ll use to try to convince you, your friends and your family that GMOs are OK and why you should not believe them at all.

1. GMOs are no different than the food you eat now.

First, like I already said, they want you to believe that GMO foods are exactly the same as the food that you’re already eating. If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, well, it must be a duck.

The truth is, the DNA, the inner workings of these foods has been altered to a degree that scientists are still quite unsure of what exactly these plants and foods will react in the environment and in your body. Some of them actually produce their own pesticides.

This kind of weird science is more like having a duck that has weird parts on the inside that may or may not carry out duck activities like swimming, flying or eating… what do ducks eat anyway? Bread?

2. There’s no science that says GMOs are harmful.

As a counter argument to the uncertainly of how these foods react in our world, the food industry will undoubtedly say, “we’ve spend billions of dollars on testing these foods and there’s no scientific evidence linking GMO foods to any health issues or environmental concerns.”

They always do this.

Basically, what this translates to is, “we’ve spent billions of dollars crafting studies that protect our investment.” Independent science on GMOs does exist and it’s not as favorable as the food industry would like you to think.

I guess it’s just human nature.

Let’s say you run a cigarette business. Isn’t in your best interest to make sure that no one connects your product to cancer? You bet.

3. GMOs can save the world.

If all else fails, it’s time to pull on your heartstrings.

Most bio-tech companies will tell you that genetically modified foods can save the world in one way or another. They usually mention starving children when they bring up this topic to make sure they get your attention.

The issue with this argument is that the majority of genetically modified foods being grown today are not being developed to help starving children. They are crops grown in the U.S. and around the world (where GMOs are not banned) being grown to produce their own pesticides, fatten up animals, make plant based plastics, and add filler into your food.

The starving children ploy is a pie-in-the-sky attempt to make you feel like you’re supporting something that is just a secondary — faux-humanitarian — focus of most of the food producers.

Also, a little darker to think about, all companies must turn a profit to survive, so if they’re thinking about helping starving children, they’ve also figured out a way to profit from them.

True humanitarianism is giving aid, not profiting from it and then using it as a PR move to get your support.

4. GMOs are the future of food.

Finally, the food companies will act as if you don’t have a choice, all the world has already accepted this new type of food and you’re the only one who hasn’t. “If you want to be a dirty old hippie and live like a caveman, fine, but get your Volkswagen bus out of everyone else’s way,” they’ll say.

If you think everyone else is already on board, then it makes sense to be on board too. The food and biotech companies will start to form advisory boards of prominent doctors and scientists, pay a celebrity or two and get a prominent politician to endorse genetically modified foods so you think they’re a-OK. You do trust politicians, doctors and celebrities, right?

But the truth is, there are many more people who want to know what is in our food. You’re one of the millions of people around the globe that cares and they’re just trying to win you over with their big PR firms and spin.

So ultimately, your job is to spread the world, whether you’re in California or Kazakhstan. Tell people that you want to know what’s in your food. It’s as simple as that.

Our job isn’t done here. It’s our responsibility to counter the spin and ultimately have control over what we feed our families. Some of these arguments above will assist you along the way.

Also, if you really want to help, since we need you now more than ever, here’s where you can go: http://www.LabelGMOs.org

On this site, you can sign up to get newsletters on GMOs, you can ask how you can donate your time, or you can donate money to the campaign.

As I said in the beginning, our jobs have just started. If we really care about our food, this may be the most important issue that we’ve been faced with in the last 50 years.

Your question of the day: What are you going to do?

Live Awesome!

Hi Kevin, We went through this about 10 years ago when GM was getting started, probably easier before it is in the food chain rather than after it is already in a lot of products.
Thankfully it was decided that all packaged GM products must be labelled in NZ, although not cafe type foods

Good luck with the battle ahead 🙂

I often feel rather unable to do much from Canada because often links given and petitions are US based. As well a great deal of our food comes from the US.

I am all for supporting what is happening in California and wanting to help in any way possible. I pass the information on as much as I possibly can and I talk to as many people as I can.

Does any of your readers out there know of any initiatives in Canada for doing something on this issue?

I really want hidden GMO’s to be exposed everywhere.

    • Marzena says:

      Hi,
I also live in Canada and would like to do sth about GMO labelling. Maybe we should write to our councilors or members of parlament. If you find any lobby group pls let me know.
      Thanks
      Marzena

  3. yes, it is so important to have this passed in the Bay Area. We all are responsible for what we put into our bodies – Real Food is our right and we need to demand that we know from where and how it was grown.

thank you for helping us fight for our rights to keep healthy and to encourage everyone to be aware of how important REAL FOOD is for everyone.

  4. Larry Fishman says:

It seems to me that most other countries have banned GM foods, and there are studies that show that 3rd generation offspring of rats are sterile. There has not been enough time for that to happen in humans. But if the GMO Labeling Law is defeated, that could very well happen. Unfortunately, in our society profits are more important than people and health, and the organizations that are supposed to protect us instead protect the corporations. Greed is rampant in our society, and too many people only care about making money. Too bad we do not have Mark Twain around to expose our new Gilded Age.

To end on a lighter note, here are some quotes on health:

Be careful in reading health books. You may die of a misprint (Mark Twain)

The medical profession (is) a conspiracy to hide its own shortcomings. No doubt the same may be said of all professions. They are all conspiracies against the laity… (U)ntil there is a practicable alternative to blind trust in the doctor, the truth about the doctor is so terrible that we dare not face it (George Bernard Shaw, “The Doctor’s Dilemma,” 1906)

If we doctors threw all our medicines into the sea, it would be that much better for our patients and that much worse for the fishes (Oliver Wendell Holmes, M.D)

  5. Niraja Golightly says:

My problem is with the pollen that has already been unleashed on our food supply, and it’s so hard to control it or get rid of it altogether. We must stop GMOs now and get rid of them! What I’m doing is education and advocacy…

  6. Thomas says:

I think it’s great to take a stand against GM foods. The laws need to be carefully defined to totally eliminate their dangers.

Look at what is ‘acceptable’ in New Zealand despite their anti-GMO laws:
    http://www.foodstandards.gov.au/consumerinformation/gmfoods/gmcurrentapplication1030.cfm

A lot of ‘herbicide resistant’ and ‘pesticide resistant’ foods. The same ones Monsanto, DuPont, BASF, Dow, and Bayer have growing here in the U.S. (Soybeans, canola, corn, potatoes, sugar beets, cotton, wheat and rice)

This is the problem of having the Dept. of Agriculture run by the corporate world. Our taxes subsidize the growing of these very crops. Without the subsidies, the farmers couldn’t profit and would not grow these. Imagine, the gov’t. taxes us to subsidize our own demise. 🙁

  7. Faith Minier says:

If you do not live in California, monetary donations will be needed. You can get info, volunteer or donate here: http://www.labelgmos.org/?recruiter_id=8880

  8. I feel it is our right to make a choice, especially when it comes to the basic necessity of food.

Why is it such an issue to label GMO, is there some nasty secret or is it because they know that there is something unpalatable lurking just beneath the surface.

What happened to good old fashioned food?

  9. Sue says:

I hope the momentum that is generated in California carries over into other states!

  10. David says:

I’ve been following this at mercola.com (Dr. Mercola). This initiative is extremely important because California is a major economy, bigger than many entire countries, and what goes down in California reverberates throughout the U.S. and the world. The irony here is that this not a referendum to eliminate GMO products (although I wish it were). It’s just asking that GMOs be labeled. But Monsanto and the other crime families will be spending untold millions of dollars to fight against a simple “right to know” concept. If GMOs are so great, why wouldn’t they want everyone to know about them? Why must what we eat be kept a secret? Is it because they’re feeding us poison? Well, yeah, actually they are.

Good luck to our USA brethren in their clash with the GMO companies! Here in Australia, I think the labelling debate continues. If all the other pressures in the world finally prevail, we may be facing a world like “Soylent Green” and we won’t have the faintest idea what, or who, we may be eating!

Someday most people may come to the realization that GMOs are a crime against all of humanity. Will it be too late?

  15. sarah says:

I really appreciate and love to read you and Anne’s articles because you have so much love for the world and share it. I feel the same way. Amidst all the global problems, in the ultimate vote I turn to this prophecy for the solution at Revelation 11:18.

  16. kit says:

Kevin – you have barely touched on the issues. Some of These GMO foods are designed with insecticides in them………which will continue to work in your stomach.

All these foods are heavily sprayed with pesticides and fungicides and herbicides which also end up in our bodies. They are resulting in millions of fields of resistant weeds. There are new viruses that are killing animals and plants and will eventually effect humans. The good bacteria in the soil is gone and the plants themselves have much less nutrition in them.

As someone else has mentioned, independent studies have shown that mice fed GMO’s thru the third generation are sterile. They claim they are producing more food but they are not. The crop yields have gone down. Round up is used which is being found in everyone’s blood………. International UN studies indicate that empahsis should be placed on developing small community farms and teaching those in poor counries to to farm with plants that are indigenous to their area.

The GMO”s are creating a monoculture which will be very susceptible to pests or drought or other diseases that could easily cause huge food losses. Remember the potato faminie in ireland in the 1850’s.

Ultimately, they want to make seeds sterile so they can only be used once and will control the food supply and make food impossibly expensive………eventually going for their depopulation agenda………

  17. Claudia Schumann says:

Kevin, thanks so much for your article on GMO foods. It really definitely answers the question as to why GMO foods are not good. GMO’s are bad because we do not know what happens down the road when we tinker with DNA. For all these ‘tunnel-vision’ scientists know is that they could be making something far worse than any of the pesticides that are out there. If you eat something that has it’s own pesticide built in you may end up killing the poor human than eats it because this DNA altered food will sense that we are a pest and kill us. It seems like a Sci-Fi scenario but that is exactly what is happening. Don’t these guys read any Sci-Fi (a lot has actually come to pass)? I will sign any petition against this and will support all labeling requirements – we have the right to know what is in our food!

  18. jackie perrucci says:

Well, for one thing I’m volunteering to help the GMO awareness booth for the Health Expo this weekend where I live, which makes me feel like I’m doing something tangible to help out.

  19. Lori says:

I appreciate you writing this article. I live in Los Angeles and have joined the effort here to get the label GMO’s initiative on the ballot. Now that all the signatures have been gathered, our focus is on getting endorsements for the initiative from doctors, religious leaders, public figures, etc. And to educate as many people as we can on what GMO’s are. While I was gathering signatures, I was surprised by how many people had never heard of GMO’s.

We need to get the truth out about GMO’s to counteract the propaganda Monsanto will spread – they have between 40 to 100 million dollars in the budget to do it with.

I think that the best thing to do now is to pray – really – to pray and do a meditation and making the vibration higher.

    Like David Icke said:
The right thing to do is to expand your vibrationa;l frequency, your awareness, fill yourself with Light and Love and give the dark powers
healing and Love, for they lack both.
    Turn the dark into Light.

And also make sure to educate yourself and take care with prevention.

  21. Caitlin says:

Definitely one of your best articles I have read. Thank you for the great information. As a Health Coach, I am trying to educate as many of my clients as I can about the dangers of GMO’s.

  22. Molly B says:

Kevin, PLEASE write an article in very simple English explaining GMOs for us to print and hand out. I live in an area where a high school education is about as much schooling as people get. They need to understand WHAT GMOs are, HOW they are different from food and ACTIONS they can personally take to become aware and involved in labeling. This would go a long way in getting support from the ‘unaware’ masses.

  27. The sooner we rid this beautiful planet of our stupidity the better off it will be. I’m not a nihilist per se, it’s just the truth. Maybe we deserve to annihilate ourselves, and with the constant assault on our DNA it’s likely only a matter of time before our species is sterile. Monsanto nearly wiped out the honeybee, when is our turn? How much damage has our DNA already suffered through pesticides and GMO? It’s an abhorrent consideration.

Good riddance to our pathetic species I say. We are truly the weakest link and life here deserves better than the horrors we inflict upon it. Nothing lasts forever anyhow, not the stars, not the universe as we know it, and certainly not humanity. It’s all transient, but that makes it precious.

We should leave a giant tombstone behind for any space faring species that may happen upon our fallen civilization – “Here lies humanity, profound potential destroyed by greed”. I think that would be quite fitting. I don’t know the future, but our current path leads only to this fate. All those morons who think money means more than life will be laid down in the dust with the rest of us. Be careful what you wish for right? Why should our children keep paying the price for our sins? I embrace science and discovery, but this is madness.

In our ignorance and arrogance we came to believe that the world belongs to us and I think that was our greatest mistake; the loss of humility. We are even seen by our own kind as just a resource to be exploited for profit. Whether it be modern agriculture or allopathic medicine or corrupt politicians, it’s all the same twisted greed destroying what we are.

This is really about good and evil, the minority is evil yet they seem to have most of the power. These people, Monsanto, big pharma, policy makers et al, anyone employed by them, are all traitors to life.

Yes I’m angry about things like this, but if you aren’t angry then you don’t care. If you don’t care then you are part of the problem. I salute and admire the beacons of light out there making a stand for what is right, for our existential right to eat real food. I’m not American but it affects us all. All we can do is fight this war with whatever we have, because the big picture is that it just may determine how much time we have left as a species.

I’d rather not be ashamed of being human, because we can be something wonderful, but I am ashamed. We should all look at ourselves and be ashamed for there will be no change without it. Look at what we’ve done.. Do we deserve redemption? Despite who we may blame for this and that, we are collectively responsible for the state of things. We are far from all evil, so at least we have hope on our side.

Sorry for the rant and on a lighter note thanks to Kevin for spreading awareness and being such a beacon. Be afraid Monsanto et al, we have soldiers too! 😀 Their tools are money and greed, ours are courage and love. Clash of the titans huh. Only kindness matters, and without it we are dust. May we have the strength to prevail. Namaste.
