Getting Ready for Raw Spirit Festival - The Renegade Health Show Episode #130
September 1, 2008 |
You might be wondering why we’re getting ready so early…
The Raw Spirit Festival is in less than two weeks, but we’re going to visit my grandfather for his 90th birthday in Pittsburgh, then flying out to Sedona from there.
Sooo…. we need to plan now!
We’re excited to be traveling so much, but we’re also very careful to make sure that we plan because sometimes (if you don’t) you’ll end up eating less optimally than you’d like…
Today’s show is a lot of fun (or at least we had fun making it!), go ahead and have a laugh or two…
Your question of the day: What other healthy treats and snacks can we bring to Pittsburgh?
Click here, scroll down to the bottom of the page and leave your healthy travel tips here!
You can still get your tickets for the Raw Spirit Festival by clicking here! See you there!
Live Awesome!

Hiya Kevin,
What is the brand of Coconut Water that you buy and love.?
You showed us the box of coconut water and said you liked this brand but never told us the name. And even commented on the colorful packaging. But no brand name.
Please share this with me.
Have fun in Pittsburgh.
Cheers,
Gail
I’ve recently purchased some goji berries from Tibet. After researching goji berries, I read conflicting things where the goji berries from China are authentic and those from Tibet are fake. What’s your take on goji berries?
Like you, when I travel I bring apples, bananas fresh or dehydrated, nuts, and I make some Flaxseed Tuiles.
Here is the recipe:
-1/2 cup golden flaxseed soaked in 1 cup water until all the water is absorbed
- 1/2 cup pitted dates or maple syrup or raw honey
- 1/2 small apple, peeled, cored and chopped
- 1/4 c ground Flax seeds
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Process all ingredients until smooth.
Spread mixture on Teflex as thin as possible.
Dehydrate 105 F 4 hours until firm enough to flip over. Cut into shapes. Dehydrate 105F until crisp. Delicious!
I hope that you enjoy the Raw Food Festival in Sedona. I live very close (Prescott, AZ) but won’t be going as I cannot afford the ticket price at this time. I think that they should have made some cheaper entrance fees by not including the meals.
Have a great time in beautiful Sedona!
Larabars…
They are my best friend when I am travelling.
How about some flax seed crackers and raw granola. I’m sure you can buy that at a health food store where you are at. Here in Hawaii (where I live) we don’t have many stores where we can buy ready made raw foods but Whole Foods is going to finally open here on Sept 10 (yeah!) so hopefully they will have more raw foods. Have a great trip you guys! I really, really enjoy watching the Renegade Health show (I am now so addicted to your show).
Love the raw travel tips! I am trying to get work covered last minute so I can make it out to raw spirit. Suggestions for raw travel treats…
My fave is kale chips! Chips are total car food and it is awesome to have yummy kale chips for snacking.
De-stem kale and rip into big pieces and put in HUGE pot (I use my old chili pot) I usually do 2-3 bunches of green or purple kale…don’t worry, it will shrink.
In vitamix, combine tomatoes, sundried tomatoes (soaked) with soak water, tahini, nama shoyu or sea salt, lemon juice, red bell pepper, basil, oregano, cayenne or jalepeno (if you like spicy or leave out if you don’t), garlic, and fresh ground black pepper. Ingredients are flexible…have fun and make your fave semi-thick tomato sauce.
Pour sauce over kale and massage for 10-15 minutes until kale is completely covered and wilts down (think good thoughts, listen to great music, chant, infuse the kale with positive energy while massaging)
Dehydrate at 105 until kale is krispy krunchy!
I have been told these are better than chips, popcorn, doritos, etc…and you are basically eating a salad!
Have a great trip and hope to see you there!
how do we sign up for the talks at the raw spirit festival or is tht not happening this year.???
Raw Apple Cider Vinegar is supposed to help acne…
Hey guys!
First off, I like the haircut Kevin!! One thing I try to do when I travel is dehydrate!
I like to make slightly sweet and salty nuts with agave and sea salt. Or the cocoa crispies from Raw Food Real World. Also from that book is the macaroons which our family loves! The dehydrated things travel well and are filling. If your car trip is more than one day I would definitely try to bring produce so you don’t end up with fast food salads, like I did once!!!—YUCK!
Tracy
P.S. Annemarie–I have to hide food for special occasions from my husband too!!!
I saw Larabars as well.. they are great for traveling along with dehyrated crackers…
Have a fabulous time at the Raw food Festival in Sedona.. I won’t be able to make this one.. but hopefully next year when it is in Santa Barbara..
Say Hi to Shea and Stephen for me…
They are having their first Raw food Potluck this comind Sunday… Be well.. and safe travels to both of you..
I, like Rachael, also love Kale Chips. You can make many different flavoured ones so easily. Thanks for the recipe Rachael, I will try that one.
I would love to be going to Raw Spirit this year but it is such a long way from Australia. Maybe next year!
Looking forward to future episodes from the festival.
If you have ani’s raw food kitchen cookbook by Ani Phyo there is a great sesame seed/sunflower bread that I make all the time. Very easy to make in the dehydrator and very good.Put an avocado on it and you’ll have a great lunch.
Kind of liked you with curly hair.Have a great trip.Wish I could go.
For travelling I would take anything that will travel well - dried fruits, nuts, trail mix, raw food bars, any fresh fruits that wont spoil on the journey. Due to the lack of fresh food available during travelling I like to have a lot of water coz I can start to feel really dried out and tired if all I can eat is dehydrated foods. This year when I went to Thailand, Qatar Airways and Bangkok Air actually provided salad in the form of crudites (vegetable sticks). I was sooo grateful to get something fresh for a change.
Favorite snack: dates stuffed with Brazil nuts. I keep some in my car for snacks so I’m not tempted with fast food pit stops.
I was going to say water too, and one nice travel food similar to Janice’s idea, above, is (soaked) almond stuffed dates wrapped in a small section of dino kale. Very satisfying, and they keep well. And I also like bliss balls, (there are so many recipes) recently I made pumpkin seed, hemp seed, raisin and orange peel - pretty good!
I will definitely be trying the kale chips…
Have fun in Sedona, wish I could be there with you guys!
Gail its called O.N.E I can see how it would be confusing since you’re not familiar with it. I’ve been to their website before, google it!
Food Irradiation - HELP! I hear from the Health Ranger this is becoming standard practice in the USA. YIKES!! HOw can we stop this. I like to think an old time farmer using no chemicals and growing veggies and supplying to the market is the way to go. No processing by the FDA is required. I never want to live in the USA if this is what they are doing to our fruits and veggies. Please help me understand. Since the health Ranger alerted me.
I refuse to buy organic veggies and fruits shipped to Singapore from the USA which is where I live.
What is your opinion of Food Irradiation?
Dr. Weil says it is ok. I so disagree. Eating food is so scary today.
No one knows what has been done to it, how really healthy it is and I am scared.
I would so love to go to the festival, but the cost is too prohibitive. Have the best time ever!!!
What part of Pittsburgh will you be visiting. I will happen to be there at the same time.
Hey Guys!
Hope you have a fantastic trip.
When the wife and I came back to Canada from Japan for vacation we had 24 hours of travel time that included trains, cabs, buses and of course planes, and we took with us:
-you raw sushi recipe, which was awesome–Thank You!
-Brendan Brazier’s energy bar recipe, which is also super great, and there’s a video of it here: http://gliving.tv/videos/
-bell peppers and celery cut into strips, and some baby tomatos, which were so refreshing on the plane
-soaked almonds which are a favourite munchable
-dried fruits that we soaked again to help with the dryness of the plane
-barley grass powder that comes in 3g serving packaging for travel that are easy to pop into you water bottle and make such a difference
All in all, was the best trip we ever had. Hope you and the fam have a great trip and enjoy the food along the way!
Cheers!
Kevin and Ann Marie,
There is a beautiful vegan and raw food restaurant in Pittsburgh now. Its just opened 6 months ago its Pittsburghs first.
Its in Oakland and its called Maggie’s Mercantile. Have a great time in Sedona. Hopefully next year we will have some time to go too.
I noticed the pineapple on your counter and it looked upripe. Not sure as it’s hard to tell. I read a article by Dr. Flora Van Orden from 2007 and it may still be on one of her blogs about how to ripen one. It was part of an article on how to get rid of pitting edema. You poke holes in the stem end with a fork and place them in the sun in a small saucer or water so that the water can rise up in the holes and the fruits will come back to life again as they begin to circulate the water. They will quickly lose their green color and become yellow orange and healthier. I have tried this three or four times and it works great and the pineapples taste wonderful.
