An Update on Agave Syrup and Other Healthy Sweeteners - The Renegade Health Show #194
December 1, 2008 |
We got a bunch of questions about agave the other day, so I figured it would be fun to clarify and re-state the reasoning why we’re not recommending it anymore…
In this episode, I rehash the processing of it, discuss some further research that has been brought to me about agave syrup and its processing and (a little off topic) talk about the health benefits of nettles tea!
Take a look and be sure to pass this along to your friends…
Your question of the day: Do you have any idea what our plans for 2009 are? (If you know already, please don’t spoil it!)
Click here, scroll down to the bottom of the page and leave a comment now!
The has been some discussion about maple syrup and agave and some people have not agreed with my recommendation of maple syrup. Maple syrup is not my first recommendation… honey and dates and just plain old fruit should be the first resort. My recommendation is that I prefer maple syrup to agave, but its really not the best first choice!
Hope that clears this up!!!
Live Awesome!

I wondered if you knew about the “Ultimate Real Raw Agave Nectar” on “Rawinten.com” site. I have been writing him and he says he has done all the research and this is real RAW Agave Nectar. rawbryan@hotmail.com and he can tell you about it.
dates-dates-dates
- I like the sweetness of dates :-)…..dates and pears with a little ginger - yummmm :-)…..since I never really used agave that much - - I won’t be missing it when I leave it out.
Are you moving into a new house with a bigger kitchen? I think you need it! I enjoy your un-cooking shows!
You’re moving!!
Maybe you donated the books and bought a kindle that has something to do with Health Book Summaries?? And raw honey is my favorite sweetener.
Are you guys moving? That’s the only time my bookshelves get emptied(except for hurricane season!):)
I think you two are getting ready to move. You’ve been hinting about getting out of the cold weather and taking some trips in other countries. I think that maybe you’re joining Mike Adams and going to Ecuador! I know I sure want to get out of the cold in Colorado and travel with my husband somewhere warm! Whatever your plans are for 2009 I’m excited for you and can’t wait to hear what it is!
Yes it’s quite processed. But, it was very helpful to me and many others early on in my journey. At the beginning of my raw life I had quite a bit of agave. It was soooo helpful to me in getting over my sugar addiction. I can now walk past a chocolate shop and not even be slightly tempted.
Yes I used other things as well. Dates, bananas, lucuma powder and mesquite. Lots of different things. These days I’m pretty happy with fruit for a sweetner. I rarely have bananas because my tummy becomes instantly bloated and sore and I’ll gain 2kg (roughly 4 pounds) after just eating a few of them the way I do if I have bread. But I don’t get that with agave.
Our agave is not heated over 40 degrees Celsius and I think it’s a great transition tool.
Thanks for the good work Kev.
I think you are moving!

Are you making room perhaps for a new book you have been writing?
My guess: You’ve cleared your bookshelves to make room for 1000 copies of your new book that’s about to be released. You’ll give a copy to each of your new members (and one to me for being the first to guess of course). Then you’ll have a “visual” of your membership growth as your bookshelf empties again. OR, you’re cleaning up because your in-laws are visiting (kidding). Thanks for keeping it real.
h-m-m-m-m..you have been cleaning and speaking of moving.yet thats not a event planning type thing.lotsa books coming lately. You are opening a center for your business or a store or some sort of meeting place for people to hang out.
Def has to do with books, moving and connecting with all of us. am I close?
Well, you’re either moving, or making space for a new Gianni!
Moving? I am grateful for the info on Agave.
I like raw honey, the kind that has wax and all sorts of thickness to it, almost a paste, love it!
I think you are moving to Los Angeles to be near me so we can party on raw food!
or maybe just somewhere warm..
love deb
Thanks for the good info. about agave. It seems to be another “fad” food, as Nomi was talking about. Designer food, designer pricing, yah?? As for your bookshelves, the secret has been revealed on Revvellations, Rawkin Radio! Sounds exciting - I wish you well and it should be fun for we listeners/watchers as well!
Donna G.
Hi Marlene,
Hope you check back to read the logs. Where in Colorado are you? I am in Colorado Springs.
Carola
PS: I don’t use much agave and intend to continue it occasionally. I love raw honey also but sometimes I need something thinner. I find that dates have too many calories.
What about yacon root syrup? Isn’t that unprossesed and close to nature? I heard that it was really good for you. Let me know what you think about the yacon root syrup. Also I wanted to share some of the best raw honeys that I have found. The synergy company has a honey called manuka honey that is harvested in New Zealand and is very antibiotic. The taste is rich and creamy. The other honey, is the king of all honeys, it is superior to all other honeys in the world, in my opinion. It is called Noniland, wild crafted raw honey. You can purchase it at Sunfood.com. The reason why it is so superior is because David Wolfe has made it possible for bees to feed off of trees filled with Ormus-rich seawater, volcanic rock silt, spriralina and LOVE! What could get better or more nutrient rich than that! I love it! The price ofcourse is much steeper than basiclly all other honeys, but you get what you pay for. I would highly reccomend.
You are forgetting to mention the horrific effects that high fructose has on body. Agave can have almost double the fructose than HFCS making it more harmful to the body. Fructose can severely damage the liver. Fructose can cause liver disease just like an alcohol. It is toxic to the liver.
- Fructose increases your chances of becoming insulin resistant
- You lose minerals
- Increased risk of malabsorption
- Gastric distress
- It can increases triglycerides levels
All you need to do is do a google search on the dangerous side effects of fructose and you will find plenty of information.
I believe that even the fructose found in fruit is quite harmful.
Fructose in fruit, HFCS, Agave… is still fructose.
Agave, schmagave… eat what feels good and less is more.
Yup, I agree with Marlene and Jennie, yer movin’.
If your bookshelves are emptying my guess is you are moving! That would be exciting, maybe you would have more space! Whatever it is, all the best to you guys!
i agree w/marlene u probably r going to be w/mike adams in ecuador so shipping your books to another location or on 1 of your episodes u said that u want to get rid of as much stuff as possbile, so it could be that. it’s 1 of those 2 things. why do u never mention lo han for use as a sweetener, which is a chinese fruit?
I’m so pleased this agave problem was discovered before I had some sent here to the Middle East! It’s not available here - we have date syrup here (dates grow everywhere here) - made by an Arabic company and everything written in Arabic, so it’s difficult to know what processes are involved until I get a translation. Does anyone know anything about date syrup?
are your audios in print form also?
with only 28 kbs modem speed available it takes forever to download the audios.
Kevin, You and Annmarie are moving!.
Wondering why you never mention STEVIA. Is there a reason?.
Thanks for all the informaion/advice. You have become part of my life…part of the routine of daily life. If you were to stop doing this good work I would miss you, feel that something important was missing!.
Enjoy the Journey.
Donal.
Okay, wild guess here! You have a kindell or other electronic book system and you are putting all your books on it??? I love the elctronic book systems, they are so great especially for e-books. unfortunately not too many raw food authors have their books available for download with Amazon.com , hope that changes soon.
Whatever you are doing, I’m sure it’ll be AWESOME!!!!
By the way, good lighting for this show!
And………..what about yukon syrup?? I so want it to be healthy but I’m afaid like the agave it’s too good to be true???
Hello kevin!!
marcia here in stockholm.
Could you PLEASE discuss how to help or get rid of OSTEOARTHRITIS!! Thanking you in advance.
marcia in stockholm
I get Silica from horsetail. Tip from David Wolfe. There’s loads of nettles here (UK), we are blessed with them. Nice as a green juice.
Nobody mentioned raisins? I have them with buckwheat sprouts, rather nice.
Hi Catherine,
You are correct about fructose being harmful to the liver in concentrated amounts and.. correct me if I’m wrong, Kevin, but I think that’s what Kevin was trying to say in his first video about agave. I think in this video he was trying to say, whether concentrated at temperatures higher or less than 115 degrees (which is the cut off point for raw food), we are still taking a whole food from nature and separating it from its other components (such as fiber, co-factors, phytonutrients, etc.. ) to create a very concentrated form of a portion of the food we would otherwise get in a completely different package from nature.. and that can be dangerous. I believe if one sticks to the recommended 2-3 whole fruits a day, the amount of fructose that is being consumed is not going to be detrimental to your liver or health, but if you take it in amounts that are above and beyond that, it will.. and that is precisely what we are doing when we extract and concentrate only portions of a food for our consumption.
Just as with raw cocao powder, where the fat has been removed from it, we learned from that video and the comments afterwards, that altering the way cocao was designed to be eaten, in this way, causes an increase in the rate at which caffeine and theobromine are absorbed.. so the fat is there for a reason.
Whenever we try to improve on mother nature, we come up short. There hasn’t been enough research and we don’t understand just yet, all the components of foods and how they interact with each other, but I don’t believe we can ever improve on mother nature. I think foods are perfect just the way they were created and anything we do to try to change that is only going to be to our detriment.
In a recent lecture I attended by Brian Clement, he said that fruit has been hybridized to be sweeter than it was meant to be, so he doesn’t recommend eating more than one or two fruits a day. That probably has to do with the fact that fruit has a higher concentration of fructose than it used to as well.
Gabriel Cousens also said there is a difference between tonics and herbs. Tonics are foods which don’t contain any small amount of toxin whereas herbs do. He said you should also be very careful about ingesting herbs and that you should not eat them in concentrated amounts.
Just a few comments to put forth on the health benefits of eating whole foods as opposed to concentrated and extracted forms of food. Be careful what you are eating if it is not from nature.. we can’t always watch and control what people are doing to alter our food. The best way to guarentee we are getting the best is to eat the way mother nature intended us to.
Hope this helps..
Bernadette
Just started on your show and I am hooked. I love watching at least once a day. I feel like there is endless info, as well as morivation to keep up the health and fitness lifestyle. I am new to the “raw foods”, can you clarify on which honey you are talking about. I am guessing that the honey I buy in the grocerie store is not it?
Yours in health and fitness,
Annette
