No time. Lazy. Then this raw vegan oatmeal is for you - 1

That’s a perfect raw vegan oatmeal recipe… from naked oats. Yes naked… well because, they are naked. They loose their hulls in the field when being harvested.

Familiar taste, familiar comfort after eating them, but better, because they are raw! Did you know that regular oats are heat treated to deactivate the enzymes that make oats go rancid after a while? Yes, even the steel-cut ones.

A different story with naked oats. Again, because this species of oats naturally loses hulls, enzymes stay intact (forced dehulling activates enzymes). For this reason, under the right conditions naked oats can be stored for a long time without trouble.

I won’t annoy you with too much nutrition facts – I’ll just mention a few:

  • Naked oats have more protein than regular ones (9 g versus 7 g per serving)
  • Naked oats also have more fiber and iron

Now, where to buy these guys?

Naked oats are not as widespread as regular oats, so you might need to do some extra work to find them in your city. At the very least, naked oats are always available online.

I get naked oats from Manitoba-based Adagio Farms (from a local food store) but their products can be purchased online too. If you live in Canada, it worth checking your local food stores for this brand – they are certified organic and seem to be of very good quality.

To wrap up, I like what this guy has to say about the taste of naked oats – pretty entertaining – you can listen to the audio here.

  • 3/4 steel cut naked oats (you can use rolled naked oats too, just make sure it says “raw” on the packaging)
  • 1 tbsp fresh goji berries (or 1/2 tbsp dried goji berries)
  • 3-4 tbsp organic apple cider vinegar (or juice of a lemon)

  1. Put oats into a stainless steel or glass bowl, add warm water to cover the grain completely plus go a few inches above the top
  2. Add apple cider vinegar, stir, and leave in warm place for 8-12 hours (overnight is good)
  3. In the morning, put goji berries on top and realize that best things in life don’t need much modification or improvement, they just need to be discovered!
