Will a colonic fix your upset stomach? Doctors and alternative healthcare practitioners disagree.

There’s debate between the scientific and holistic health communities about colonics. Do you need them or don’t you? Are they good for you, or not?

Here’s an overview of both sides, along with four reasons you may need a colonic now…or not.

What is a Colonic?
A colonic—also called colonic hydrotherapy, colonic irrigation, and colon irrigation—is a alternative health process in which a colon therapist infuses water, possibly enriched with other natural elements, into the rectum to clean or flush out the entire length of the colon.

During the appointment, the patient lies on a table and warm water, sometimes infused with herbs, coffee, probiotics, enzymes, and other substances, is slowly released into the rectum through a tube. Waste and fluid are expelled via another tube. (The client does not see or smell the waste as it empties.) The typical appointment takes about 45 minutes to an hour.

Side A: You Don’t Need Colonics
According to the Mayo Clinic, most doctors don’t recommend colonics for detoxification or other potential health benefits. Their main reason: your digestive system and bowel naturally eliminate waste material and bacteria. You don’t need colonics to do this.

The other reason doctors often actually discourage colonics is because of the potential for them to be harmful. Colonics may:

  • Increase your risk of dehydration
  • Lead to bowel perforations
  • Increase the risk of infection
  • Cause a rise in your electrolytes, which can be dangerous if you have kidney disease or heart disease

In fact, a study published in The Journal of Family Practice, which evaluated 20 studies on colonics published in the last decade, found little evidence of benefit, with many reports of side effects like cramping, bloating, nausea, vomiting, electrolyte imbalance, and kidney failure. Some herbal preparations were linked with liver toxicity and aplastic anemia, with hydrotherapy linked with effects like rectal perforation, colitis, and intestinal infection.

Four reasons you may not need a colonic:

  • Your digestion feels perfectly normal and you haven’t had any issues
  • You’re concerned about side effects like those mentioned above
  • You’re pregnant and are concerned about stimulating uterine contractions
  • You have hemorroids, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, colon or rectal tumors, heart disease, kidney disease, or divurticulitis

Side B: You Do Need Colonics
The other side argues that poisonous toxins get inside your body from the foods you eat, the drugs you take, the water you drink, the personal care products you use, and the environment you live in. These toxins are more plentiful now than they used to be because of the increased use of pesticides, processed foods, and chemicals in the environment, and are believed to cause a myriad of health problems such as arthritis, allergies, asthma, constipation, lower back pain, abdominal swelling, poor liver function, and more. By removing these toxins and bacteria through the colon, colonics can improve body function and feel better and healthier.

Natural heath practitioners say a colon in poor working condition can affect not only your digestion, but your entire body system. You do need colonics for the following reasons:

  • You feel tired and sluggish even when you’re getting 8 hours of sleep
  • You have frequent headaches
  • You’re struggling to lose weight even though you’ve cut back on calories
  • Your skin is breaking out more often than normal, or you’re having other skin issues
  • You’re frequently sick
  • Your bowel movements are not regular, and the consistency is either too watery or too pasty
  • You experience frequent gas and bloating, even on a healthy diet
  • You have bad breath or a foul body odor even though you practice good hygiene

If you do decide to get a colonic, make sure you check with your doctor first to be sure you have no medical conditions that could make the procedure risky for you. Then choose a quality location with an experienced practitioner, as the sterility of the materials used and the technique are both very important to a successful experience. Make sure you drink plenty of water both before and after.

Four reasons you may need a colonic:

  • You feel sluggish, tired, sick, and just not “up to speed”
  • Your digestive system is often out of whack
  • You’ve been exposed to a lot of toxins lately and you want to start fresh
  • You’ve been eating unhealthy foods and you want to start on a new, healthier diet

Which side are you on when it comes to colonics? Please share your thoughts.

I’m so surprised that the main reason to take a colonic is not mentioned:
Certain unnatural poisons that are eliminated by the body into the colon are absorbed again while the body is absorbing the moisture in the feces. This can be an unending cycle that can be broken only by a colonic.
This means that we’re groping in the dark (LOL) a bit with this issue but untill we can see clearer into which poisons are taken up again we cannot dismiss colonics as a tool.
Of course in a perfect world we would not need them… maybe in a thousand years (LOL).

I had Gerd for 6 years and was taking previcid and nexium the entire time. I also had high BP and terrible allergies/sinusitus,for which I took another 4 medications. Through a combination of changing my diet and colon hydrotherapy I am happy to say I am drug free and all the conditions are actually cured. I feel great! Colon hydrotherapy was definately part of my curing process.

Shocking only a few people commented. If I’m sick and have beginning of a flu I do an enema and I feel better immediately. But when I did colonic with a professional I couldn’t believe how amazing it felt. I could have afforded only one session, but when I got of the table and walked out I had an inexplicable surge of joy and happiness! Couldn’t stop laughing! Wow. It’s then that I understood how the ‘happiness’ hormone is actually secreted in the gut and how important it is to have a healthy gut. I give colonics 5* 🙂
