So much nicer than snow in the Northeast and clouds in Berkeley! (Sarasota, Florida)
It’s been an awesome week in Sarasota with a lot of insights as well as a bunch of interesting happenings…
Some of them include an admission that doctors make mistakes, a surprising result in my own blood tests and some unfinished business when it comes Internet trolls.
Check out my 7 Things I Learned This Week now…
1. Doctors do make mistakes… this one even admits it.
Let’s put the ego aside and get to the truth.
What a refreshing thought!
Last week, I found this TEDx talk about how doctors need to tell the truth. I want to start this 7 Things with this video because I think it’s a microcosm of many things we’re dealing with in the health industry — as well as beyond.
(My comments will follow)
Yes, it’s cliche to say that “the truth will set you free,” but cliches are common for a reason. They’re generally true.
It’s obvious Dr. Goldman receives a cathartic feeling every time he shares his story. What an amazing way to come to terms with your past mistakes — in a public forum.
The freeing nature of admission is an important part of this video, but I think, as Dr. Goldman points out, it’s not the only one.
The most important to me is the unwillingness of medical professionals to discuss their mistakes — to brush them under the rug (another cliche, LOL!)
It’s selfish, ego-based behavior.
How can you create a learning and teaching environment if no one owns up to their human-ness?
You can’t.
In business, getting together and not talking about your mistakes makes you careless. You’d be foolish to make the same mistake a colleague did just a few months before without consulting with them and having an open discussion about how to not repeat the actions and get the same horrendous results.
That’s for business, but for health the risk of not talking is even higher. It involves the lives of people who — they believe — are the smartest of the bunch, so of course they’d be working together to make sure mistakes aren’t repeated.
According to this video, the truth is much different.
Watching this video, I also am reminded of our experience as we traveled across the country speaking in over 50 cities over the last few years.
It was very clear and very evident to me that the appearance of the raw food lifestyle and its reality was much different than what was being portrayed online and in books. No one was talking about it’s darker side — the failures — they were (for the most part) talking about how amazing the diet was for everyone.
I’m not fully knocking raw foods or veganism or any other diet as a whole here, what I’m saying is that reality — or behind the scenes insight — is always much less romantic. I was in a romance with raw food until it kicked me to the curb (nice, additional cliche points.)
As I saw more and more of this, I felt it was my responsibility to share what I was seeing. It was just the right thing to do. To speak out differently than others and share with as little judgement as I could (yes, difficult) about what was happening — good and bad.
The conclusion is that we, as a health conscious community, still aren’t being honest about our diet philosophies and how they work for us. We’re not being honest about what we eat all the time. In the short run that may be fine for our egos, but in the long term, it could end up getting someone pretty sick.
I’m not asking you to choose any particular diet because I say so or not. I’m simply asking you to be honest with your community about what you’re doing for your health. Tell them about the results you’re getting — positive or negative — and be a leader who bucks the system (that’s 4!) and does it because you want the best for everyone in your life.
2. I’m on the right track.
One of the reasons I came to Sarasota this week, was to do my yearly blood test work up and check in with Dr. Williams about my progress.
As many of you know, I spent some time rebuilding my digestion and my adrenals after 4-5 years of experimenting with a whole bunch of “extreme diets” (I say extreme in a non-judgmental way — and almost jokingly — knowing that my diet now is still pretty out there.)
Because of my health past, I’ve made it a point to regularly check my blood to affirm if my diet and lifestyle is working for me or not. Doing this type of routine check in, gives you a very specific confidence. A confidence that what you’re doing — no matter what diet — will be judged in a very objective manner.
For me, when I realized that my blood tests were completely out of whack, some of the belief systems I had previously started to crumble fairly quickly.
The raw food was always better than cooked food belief was the first to go. Then I started to eat a little animal food. As my testing numbers got better, I began to question just about everything that I “knew” about diet. It was humbling. I was eating more “poorly” than I had in the last few years, but my health was getting better.
Of course, I wasn’t eating poorly, I was now getting some of the nutrition that my body had been begging for — some of the nutrition that because of a significant lack had started to cause my organ systems to compensate for what was missing.
I’m glad I caught it early by not letting my ego get the best of me and actually taking a blood test to see what was going on inside of me.
My original pregnenolone test was one that caught my attention the most. Pregnenolone is a pre-hormone that helps produce many others like testosterone, estrogen, DHEA and others. Think of it as a major raw material needed for the endocrine system — and even more specific for you to be healthy and run like a normal human being.
My adrenals were so shot that my pregnenolone levels were at 6. This is the equivalent of an 85 year old man — which Dr. Williams quite bluntly stated.
This was over 3 years ago now, and I’ve been consciously working on building back the strength of my adrenals. These organs and extremely significant for your overall longevity. If they’re strong and communicate well with your endocrine system, you can live long and healthy. If they’re not, you’ll likely turn into a stew of blood and cortisol — leaving you with no other option to be stressed, at serious health risk and a total pain in the butt to be around (you can ask Annmarie about this one!)
Anyway, fast forward to just a few days ago, I get my pregnenolone results and I’ve come in at a shiny 116. A year and a half before and I was somewhere around 60.
This is progress.
But not only that, it’s reassurance of the most stable kind that my health is improving. I can’t tell you how good it feels to know you’re getting better. It completely eliminates my need to worry — I’m at total peace with my healing process.
And just to be fair, I only had some adrenal issues and my digestion sucked. What about the peace of mind you’d get by following these numbers could do for you if you were really sick?
I bet, as long as they’re trending in the right direction, they’d give you a serenity that would set you up for true, deep healing.
(Serenity now, serenity now…)
3. Crazy YouTubers…
Crazy, crazy YouTubers…
After my first IV treatment video — the one where I get the Blood Irradiation Therapy, I popped on to YouTube to see what the feedback was.
I was shocked to find that there were just as many thumbs up ratings (about 21) as there were thumbs down (about 19 or so.)
This ratio is quite an aberration from what I normally see. Usually there is about a 20:1 ratio of likes to dislikes. It’s pretty much how our videos have always been rated.
So, I of course, was a little surprised.
I also was shocked to see more than the usual amount of comments. There were maybe about 30 or so.
Curiously, I started to read them. Normally, I don’t read too many of the YouTube comments because I’ve learned in the past that they’re generally the most base and least sensitive (not all, but many.) If you’ll remember, YouTube is where one commenter once wished that Annmarie would die a horrible death.
Yeah, I know. Sad.
Anyway, as I started to read the comments, I realize that the trolls had gotten to the video. By trolls, I mean people who spend their time online pointing out everything that that think is bad in the health world and hide behind almost anonymous handles and accounts.
They had seen (or maybe even not) the video and wanted to voice their opinions.
The result was ugly.
Insults.
Bad language.
Ignorance.
All of the above and more.
I think of the couple dozen negative comments, one or two added something valuable to the discussion. Not a great ratio. In fact, I was so disappointed that I considered turning off all comments on all videos. I don’t want our work to be fodder for morons.
But, instead of doing so, I came over to the blog comments on Renegade Health to see if there was the same sentiment — there was not.
The comments on our blog here were fantastic, insightful, and worthwhile. I felt a sense of calm reading them. Apparently, people who are nasty have learned not to spend any time in our house. Thank goodness.
As for the YouTube comments, I can’t say exactly how I feel about them now. I’d love to just shut them down, but at the same time, I’ve never censored any comments on the blog — unless they’re genuinely hurtful or spoken from complete false assumptions of our inner business/blog workings.
I think I am leaning toward just closing them for good since if I were in a real live forum with really nasty, ignorant people I’d leave — shutting them completely out of the discussion.
What do you think?
I’m certainly going to keep comments here on the blog, you guys have a knack for adding to the conversation — not disgusting or insulting those who created or furthered the original content.
4. A running mistake turns into a reassurance.
Sarasota is as flat as the earth was once thought to be.
This makes it perfect for a runner who severely despises any type of incline running.
The most difficult “hill” in all of the West Coast of Florida may be the draw bridge incline headed over to Siesta Key. A total elevation gain of 20 feet.
The good news about me as a runner is this…
Because this city is so vertically challenged, it allows me to run longer distances with less fatigue.
I put that theory to the test on Sunday.
After staying up late talking to Dr. Williams the night before, I got up at 7:30 AM to take a run. I had been running between 6-7 miles every morning the entire week, but today, I wanted to push it a bit. I thought I might follow a path that I had seen on the map, but never fully mapped out distance-wise.
I decided I would see how I felt after I warmed up.
About 2 miles into my run, just before the turn off onto this uncharted path (at least for me as a runner, since hundreds of cars drive it every day,) I decided I was ready for an adventure.
So I took the road less run… by me.
Turns out, it made all the difference. (That Robert Frost… wisdom for the ages.)
What made me stronger was not the fact that the loop I was running on was at least 3 miles longer than I thought. It wasn’t the fact that I should have been prepared with more water as I trotted along the road in the hot Florida sun. It wasn’t even the fact that I managed to survive through the sometimes painful chaffing of my shorts against my thighs.
What made me stronger was the fact that about 45 minutes into the run when I realized I was into it a little more than I had anticipated that I kept on going.
I clearly remember looking down the long straight track of road — the first one I turned off onto — saying to myself that I could turn back and no one would know that I backed down from a challenge. But someone would have known.
It would have been me.
It’s so easy to give in, I thought. Why not just head home?
After thinking that, I had a quick conversation with myself in my head — I’m sure you’ve had one too.
It was quick and to the point. It was also very one sided.
My head told me this:
“You always do the things that most people don’t want to do. That’s what success is.”
It wasn’t much, but I was convinced. (And chaffed.)
I kept on running.
6 miles later, I was making a green smoothie in Dr. Williams’ kitchen feeling accomplished, successful.
This lessons is just one of the many examples where going the extra mile (or 9 miles) can give you the success you’ve always wanted — for your personal life, but also your health as well.
Where are you taking an easy way out in your health or life?
Be honest.
Then make it a point to take it to the next level.
Extra added success: No soreness at all the next day. Considering this was the first time I ran more than 10 miles since the Key West 1/2 Marathon 2 years ago, this was quite an accomplishment. Apparently my body approved of my decision as well.
5. The airlines need to change. (Non-Health Related Thought of the Week!)
I’ve talked about our mission to improve our Renegade Health customer service. It’s been an interesting 2 months as we’ve completely worked our systems to be able to serve our customers as best we can.
As I’ve done this, I’ve realized two things.
First, how mediocre our support was in the past and, second, how awful most companies are with their own customer support.
In this period of time, I’ve been hypersensitive to how the U.S. Postal Service has mishandled some of our shipments. I’ve been given the run-around by hosting companies and spoken to egotistical sales people who insulted me directly over the phone — even though their service broke. I’ve also been extremely sensitive to the state of the major U.S. airline companies.
I think we’d be better for it, if the airlines were all simultaneously grounded. Not forever, but for enough time to get them to think about what they’ve done. (Sounds like my Mom when I came home later than my curfew!)
What they’ve done is that their actions clearly show a complete disregard for their customers and we know it.
We don’t want to play elbow swap on shared arm rests anymore. We don’t want to find out our second bag is $50 at the airport. We don’t want to have to pay to upgrade to a middle seat.
The airline industry treats us like cattle and it has to change. If a restaurant was run with such disdain for the customer, it wouldn’t last a week. If it was a department store, they would close just as fast.
Airlines get away with awful systems and service because they know you have to fly home to see mom and dad for the holidays. They know you’re a grandparent who wants to see your grandkids. They know that it takes 5 days to drive from New York to San Francisco.
They have more control than we should be giving them.
What I’d like to see is more airlines taking the Southwest, JetBlue or Virgin approach.
Southwest starts with happy flight attendants. They build up from there.
JetBlue and Virgin are similar, but they also charge you a little more for a lot more value — like bigger seats (what the customer wants) and individualized TV’s on the backs of the seats.
What these businesses do well is they think of the customer first.
The way any business — or any relationship — should be cultivated.
So for Renegade Health, this has been our lesson… think of you — the customer — first, and then make changes accordingly.
Again, we’re not perfect, but we’re working to be the best we can.
This hardly applies to health, but it does if you have a health business.
What can you do to make the customer more happy — more excited to be doing business with you?
Don’t be an airline.
(With all that said, I do have to note, the last time I wrote about our new improved support, a reader wrote in challenging us to prove to her that our support was good. In her email she asked about 5-6 different health questions and “expected” us to return them to her in under 24 hours. There are a lot of issues in play here, first being that we’re not qualified to answer personal health questions, but the biggest being that there is a point when the customer can have unattainable demands. We do our best and we hope you see that now as well!)
6. All natural, all the time?
I’ve spent a lot of time with Dr. Williams this last week talking about natural health and it’s application in the real world, I’ve also — as I mentioned before — read some of the comments from the “trolls” who were spouting adamantly (and rudely) that the natural approach is the only way.
I, of course, know that putting an IV into my arm is not as natural as eating a banana, but also know that in our unnatural world, sometimes we need to turn to unnatural solutions to heal.
When I think back to the day I was diagnosed with Lyme disease, I think about how close I was to not taking antibiotics. If it wasn’t for two trusted colleagues (Dr. Williams being one) who shared their clinical experiences and why I should take doxycycline, I may still now have neurological issues stemming from that initial infection if I had taken a wholly natural approach. I’ve seen too many people since then who weren’t lucky enough to catch the infection and have suffered endlessly for it.
Some of these “unnatural” healing techniques have merit and it’s completely, unequivocally foolish to think that they don’t. It’s even more closeminded to think that all people just need to start eating a certain way and they’ll be healed. This is the mind-muck of evangelists, and it is not coming from the experience of clinicians who are working hard behind the scenes to find the solutions — natural or not — to save people from undue suffering.
A natural diet is your cornerstone of great health, I’m not disputing this by any means. What I’m saying is that You have a little more leeway with what follows — particularly if you’re sick.
7. Can I take a mulligan?
This might be the longest post I’ve ever written. Crazy what the pressurized air at 38,000 feet can do to a writer’s brain.
I’m going to take this #7 off to give you some time to recoup and get on with your day.
Thanks for spending a little part of yours with me.
Your Question of the Day: Should I shut off YouTube Comments?
Live Awesome!

I know you’ve probably covered it many times, but would like to know what you did to change in diet or exercise, etc that changed your health and test results…Thanks!

Yes, turn them off! It’s hard to understand why there is so much negativity. I guess that’s why the world is such a mess – we created it by being too negative. Not all of us, of course. Thanks so much to you and Ann for all you do for us all the time!!!

I admire this man that he admitted that he was human and not perfect. Doctors do make mistakes and they are supposed to swallow all the claims made by the drug companies. All the medical knowledge and speculations poured into their brains can’t replace intuition that surpasses the immediate evidence. They are also ignorant of the alternative therapies to the drugs that can be dangerous. May be continue to pass on his message.

Regarding the airlines –
I suggest the next “shovel ready project” any administration should begin is high speed national passenger rail. That would begin to break the monopoly airlines have over national travel.
6:22 pm on January 31st, 2012
Man, the older you get (not me, you) the more our opnions are in sync. Except maybe about air lines. Honestly until they make an attempt to start feeding us-again-you do know that they used to, right? And pretty well. You’d get on the airplane thinking I wonder what kinda nice meal I’m gonna be getting. What a mistake to do away with that. Give me a week with a willing airline and I could get them going with decent menus to please most all. Beats running through the airport with some pathetic who knows how old fruit cup from starbucks..It’s just not fun anymore.
Well take the overt attitude of the airlines (uh oh I feel another rant coming on where does this come from I took my B and have my B12 patch on today)-treating us as meaningless cattle (another truism re: the meat packing industry)as product with utter disdain for our comfort and multiply it by a factor of I dunno, 1000? and there you have some other industries: Big Pharma, Monsanto, sooo many others. Just. Don’t. Care. About. The. Consumer. Their health even their very life. don’t. care. Just the profits.
Not going to let it spoil my day tho. Thanks for your thoughtful blogs. As for cutting off the negative stream—yah why let that poison spoil other people’s perfectly nice days.

Please share what you did diet wise. My hubby and I are in the same boat. He gets injections for low T and still can not get his numbers up. I suffer from Hashimoto Disease among other things. I am reading books and blogs and become even more confused. Depending on who wrote it I should be vegan, a cave man, etc. We have no clue what my hubby and I are to eat!! Please help!

I think if it takes your peace and purpose away, then yes.
I know I dislike so many of the comments that do nothing more than feed and fill displaced egoes.
I really appreciate all that you bring here. I know when I come here, I will find useful information, fun and a place of respect. I value you and Annmarie in what you share with us, whether we agree or not.
You never cease to open my mind up to new ideas and the possibilities of looking ahead and learning. I see evolution in your journey and to me that is what we all should do; evolve as we grow and learn.
Thanks Kevin for all you share with us here!

Turn them off! The negative energy is not healthy for the negative commenter, for the readers, or for the planet.
6:55 pm on January 31st, 2012
I wouldn’t shut them off just yet, since sometimes the comments might just be some wiseguy while another could be real hurtful and very disrespectable. You will get people that just don’t agree with you from time to time, but you can always tell which ones they are and who the hurtful ones are. So don’t jump ship yet and wait and see if it keeps up, if it does then go ahead and disable comments, I wouldn’t blame ya.
7:06 pm on January 31st, 2012
Yes, turn them off! The comments will not help anyone. Thank you for sharing this today, it’s great validation of my journey and our similar progress!
7:06 pm on January 31st, 2012
I dunno if you should turn them off, Kev. Although it seems like negativity is totally worthless, I think it’s there for a reason. To spur us on, to keep us working. Sometimes it’s disheartening to read, but sometimes… it’s a reminder that we have work to do. You know? Don’t shut them out. Although it’s negative, it’s a cry for help. And a reminder to us about our purpose.
7:06 pm on January 31st, 2012
You both do an amazing job and speak from your heart. You are not afraid to rock the boat to stand by your beliefs at the time. For this you are respected and people are interested to know what you have to say. Your enthusiasm and energy that you put into passing on this information is part of who you are. Reading comments from people who will bring your energy down and introduce negative thoughts, which will affect how you feel by your reaction to them, are not in your best interests! Turn them off!! Stay in the positive mind that we have all come to know and love, focus on the good in life!!

After I gained 70 pounds on remeron and atenolol, I showed my doc the papers on the 2 drugs, and he said he was NOT taking responsibility for the pills. They are the most rapid weight gaining drugs I have read about. They were for sleep and Blood pressure.. he fired me after I stopped taking the pills, and not showing up for a few months.. He said he could no longer HELP me because of poor communications.. I had gone to him with hernias to repair, so then he said “It is not my job to find you a surgeon” That was after a year of weight gain, and not wanting to take the pills because they made me feel bad. I had the hernias, and just thought they were getting larger.. I was also getting larger, yet when I lost 40 pounds so far, my waist got 2 inches larger… Hernias and split apart abdominals are not ever spoken about, and they are what is making many obese, as the doctors are using many weight gain drugs as well, and also given to kids with ADHD, and the obesity explosion ,I believe is being created by medicine… Irony !!

Yes, Kev. Turn the comments off on youtube. We know your stuff is good. As the bible says, don’t cast your pearls before swine!
7:31 pm on January 31st, 2012
just wanted to say, or ask maybe, did you know that maca maca is very good for the Adrenal glands?
7:43 pm on January 31st, 2012
I would shut them out…there is a lot of poison out there that is not worth reading.
7:44 pm on January 31st, 2012
Yes, close the youtube comments, as you don’t need people like that in your life. Just reading them causes you and others at least minor stress. Don’t allow comments and we’ll all be more relaxed. The people who care about you will comment here.
7:56 pm on January 31st, 2012
I personally don’t read “youtube” comments, just for the fact that there are so many out there, so unhappy in their own lives, just trying to excite people for attention, goodness knows comments by these trolls excite me to no end sometimes. I’ve learned to take a deep breath and ignore it or calmly set them straight, then walk away…LOL, no more attention from me.
Kevin, if your heart tells you turn it off…listen to your heart, not us here. We know where to come to read comments, here.
8:07 pm on January 31st, 2012
Hey Kev,
In todays society if you go against the norm you are a freak, not really, but you know what I mean. You do not always get 100% approval here, however, we are polite and use our 1st Amendment rights in a learning fashion to voice our opinions. With the Youtube crowd, you are going to get those that know absolutely nothing about traditional medicine, naturopathic medicine, diets, raw food, canned food, BPA. I don’t mean this to sound mean but there are just too many that are not up to speed with all integrative, naturopathic and sometimes traditional medicine, diet, exercise, etc. To be wasting your time and energy to be the politician to start from the very beginning to convince these uneducated people that there is more out there than just “traditional” methods to our madness is a waste of your time. You are only one person, do what you do and enjoy what you do. The negativity is not good for you or AnnMarie and we certainly do not want to hear about it here. I say close the comments.
8:34 pm on January 31st, 2012
I think you should turn the YouTube comments off for good because they are never helpful or adding much light in your life. If people have questions, comments or genuine feedback, they could always write to you or write one on your blog.
Good job on the blood tests!
I really believe there is a balance between conventional, traditional and new age medicine. We can take the best of all worlds. I really don’t think we risk ruining our lives when we take antibiotics once every 10 years or take pain medication after breaking an arm! We need help sometimes.
8:40 pm on January 31st, 2012
if the youtube comments are distracting, negative and not true or helpful abandon them!
also, I am wondering what you have checked in your blood work to make sure your diet is meeting your needs? What would one ask their doctor for?
8:44 pm on January 31st, 2012
There are comments? LOL I only ever watch a few videos anyway, but never look at the opinions since I am only investing time to watch them and not money. I choose more credible sites for reviews of books and movies and such that I will spend money on ….like here as an example. If you can have the videos and no comments, shut them down if the feedback is not useful. Kev, if you were saying “this is the only way to be healthy” I would not even come here. So I guess I would take it as a compliment that the decisions you make for your own health draw comments from folks who seem to think you need to do something else with your health. I appreciate your comments on getting measurements of blood from a doctor that is looking at it from a nutritional perspective rather than a drug deficient one. I recently had a live blood analysis and was given a 4 on a scale of 5 for systemic yeast. I feel fine with no outward indications. But there they were floating around on the slide. I’m glad it was found before I fell into a bigger hole of un-health.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experiments!
Bryan

Well done Kev for making your story public. It’s a very interesting blog. And what a great TED talk! Who hasn’t got a story about a medical screw-up? Goldman is the first physician I’ve seen owning up to it.
I wrote a book about my story and put in some recipes I now use to handle my eating program (that word ‘diet’ has too many associations).
If anyone’s interested I can send an e-copy and I’d love some feedback. Just send me a message on my Facebook at Astarte Itsastarte.

As another commenter pointed out – listen to your intuition/heart, regardless of what this readership says. I happen to agree with them, tho! Turn off the
comments – they really don’t accomplish any true feedback – just negative opinions!
More power to you and the wonderful work that you and AnneMarie do! You’ll certainly get much more honest comments from this crowd! -Blessings!

How does a dirt poor elderly person best eat well and loose weight when there are no resources for “health” and “specialty” foods, vitamins and the like?
9:25 pm on January 31st, 2012
Good to hear your tests are looking up. Would be interested in see a blog post detailing what you are doing now (aka what I ate/did on a typical day)
And turn off you tube comments- if they have something to say, they can do it on your site.
9:26 pm on January 31st, 2012
Yeah, turn off those YouTube comments. I like YouTube, but I dislike the fact that the majority of comments on there are negative. I rarely scroll down to read them as I know that they are mostly going to be pointless slander. It does not seem to matter what the topic of the video is, most of the time, the morons are going to attack. Luckily with our channel, we seem to escape them somehow.
Keep up the awesome work Kev.
9:29 pm on January 31st, 2012
While I agree that no one who really follows you needs the negativity, even neandrathals have the right to free speech. In this day and age, “reality” TV and the hateful environment of self entitled people, it’s easy to identify them. By shutting them out, they would just attack someone/something else that they don’t understand. Also, I think that people post things just to get attention or to make them feel witty or clever by poking fun of something that is beyond them…..Oh, hell, Kev, just shut them off. The trolls make no contributions to society, so they don’t deserve free speech.
So much for my New Year’s resolution…

What are you doing specifically to raise your pregnenolone?
9:47 pm on January 31st, 2012
You blog is always a wonderful read – I don’t have your problems, I have my own
But you never know where you pick up a nugget of information. Thanks again!
9:47 pm on January 31st, 2012
I say shut them off. I think those that are truly following what you have to say know where to go. I for one don’t appreciate nastiness and I often read the comments on your blog and enjoy many of the posts. I love how you continue to learn, grow and share. Thank you
9:48 pm on January 31st, 2012
Turn off the comments! It’s not worth it to have to listen such low vibrating energy. You and AnneMarie are a gift and a blessing to each and every one of us. I’ve been off line for a while but once I got back on I found both of you again! And fast! I love that you are doing what’s best for you and your body. I am saddened to learn someone would post such a horrible post about AnneMarie.
I was one of the ones who didn’t get antibiotics soon enough and have Lyme, and ended up with Adrenal failure, Candida and a few other goodies [most of which have cleared up]. My diet is constantly changing, in fact I’m a changetarian! I listen to my body, not popular opinion. I loved being 100% raw but after a while noticed my health was slipping, so like you I made a conscious decision to get to the root of it and made the necessary changes. Not sure I’ll ever eat meat but then I never thought I’d do a lot of things I’ve done so I’m just going to honor the journey.
As far as airplanes…..yikes! I wish they’d stopped spraying pesticides.
Keep up the good, no. . . EXCELLENT work! You are both living authentically and sharing your love and passion to the world. Namaste…much love and peace, K

I too am interested in how you changed your diet and basically what it consists of; e.g. 75% raw, cooked grains, small amount of animal products, etc.. Also if there is one thing that you think helped the most.
Thanks again to you and Annmarie.

Yes, what did you do…I am taking cortisol for my adrenals…doesn’t sound right to me.

I have seen, heard, that more than 50% of the Doctors of all kinds, naturopathy, homeopathy or whatever, are seen to have no compassion or humanism. They are hostile and I will rate them as society approved, licensed Hidden Murderers,Killers.Govt has no role to play, whatever, we have seen around the world.
Govt people simply take money and do obligatory things of salvation ruining their souls in corruption or suicidal to one’s own nation.
SECONDLY I will put the blame on the people themselves. Howmany times, I tried to help a child to stop urinating in bed, with some herbs and some small playful yoga techniques. But NOPE, I WAS FRUSTRATED!
They said it is ok, they cannot go and buy the items I said. MERE LAZYNESS,LETHARGY AND WILLINGNESS TO STAY WITH INCONTINENECE, WITH BLINDNESS, DEAFNESS,DIABETES – this is the attitude. Two persons who desired that their diabetic feet(one sliced off,10% by a cruel Doc!south india! ) should not be cut, saved their feet in 20 days thru naturopathy & herbs. IT WAS THEIR DETERMINATION, not mine. I was determined. I chase the patients and make them cure themselves. I cannot sleep when I know a child’s suffering can be removed thru naturopathy. But their parents are so crooked and led by media and society, they do not want to hear or trust my words. I hold street talks, meets regularly, but my feeling, PEOPLE DO NOT DESERVE CURING AT ALL! THEIR SPIRITUAL STATUS, THEIR MENTAL STATUS, ALL POINT TO PERPETUAL SUFFERING. THEY THEREFORE SUPPORT THE WRONG SYSTEM OF WRONG DOCS AND DRUGS AND HOSPITALS. THEIR EGO does not allow them to opt for health. Hard to believe?
I am not a doc but a bank manager turned into naturopath. I got trained by experience and in instns. I could cure many for No Money. But respect is not earnable when I take no money. I take only deserving patients for curing. Deserving is a good word I found in life. If I want a cure, I should deserve it. This is my epithet. HENCE PEOPLE DONT DESERVE IT. BYMY LECTURES THEY ARE CHANGING SLOWLY.I DO IT WITHOUT frustrations.
THIRDLY, the industry, the wholesalers, the retailers, the politicians, the administrators are all earning HEFTY SUMS OF MONEY around the world, by doing anti national anti people businesses, obligations in their daily life. This cannot be stopped now. IT IS THE GOVT WHICH IS ANTIPEOPLE EVERYWHERE. A Fidel castro or a Gadaffi if desires health of the people, can, CAN protect people. But that also will never come thru. Even communists never knew about naturopathy.
People do not realise or want to realise that our human bodies are within a BIOLOGOICAL SYSTEM and we got to obey its rules and that there is no escape from it. That is health,a s I understood. Thanks for your wonderful site, blog, that gathers the right sort of concerned people with an unclogged brain!!

10:48 pm on January 31st, 2012
Thank you for your posts and your honesty. It is really refreshing to have such authenticity from you and your blog. I think we are all individuals and we must learn to find a balance in our lifestyle and nutrition. What works today may not work months from now. Each person, as you have found for yourself, must figure out what works best for themselves…some experiment required. Thanks for sharing your journey it helps us all see where we can help themselves even if it means changing from a dietary theory we have fallen in love with or seeking help from medical tests. It really is all about being healthy and what may be healthy for one may not be so healthy for another. Life is all about balance and if the negative comments disrupt that balance then fix it accordingly. Thank you again and keep up the great blog! PS: love Kat’s comment about being a changetarian! it is what we should all strive to be.
Loving life, Deb

Kevin, turn off the comments. They aren’t doing anyone any good. There is no reason to have them. What you put out is good and tearing it down with negative comments is worthless. Why would you allow yourself to be beat up like that, and possibly harm others who might read it?
This was great, and an incredible video. You have good thoughts and good thought processes. Also, Kevin, I have always found your customer service to be excellent. Your staff is pleasant and helpful. The first time I had an issue, I thought there might be a little “struggle”. There wasn’t and your staff was responsive, fair and helpful.
Thank you, Kevin, for your integrity and for being the person you are!!!

I think that, totally aside from ego issues, most doctors fear lawsuits and maybe even losing their malpractice insurance if they admit mistakes. Our system doesnt work in the interest of patients in many ways.
As to youtube comments, I am all for dumping them.
11:04 pm on January 31st, 2012
In medicine there’s a saying, “Doctors bury their mistakes.” Good video.
11:09 pm on January 31st, 2012
Yes/no…turn off the YouTube, your decision….your true listeners are here however someone who is searching may find you there…toughen up…take the critics for what they are worth…ignorant of healthy lifestyles…pray they see the light.
11:13 pm on January 31st, 2012
I work in the medical field and have seen many mistakes and pointed many out to the doctors before their oath :To do no harm: was violated. It is healthy for this doctor to confess…doesn’t make me any more confident being under their care…even if I know the right questions to ask and what to say no to. I feel sorry for those who follow the doctors blindly….only to become a statistic.
11:25 pm on January 31st, 2012
wow, lots of comments! kevin, would you be willing to share your blood test history of basic stuff, like cholesterol, triglycerides, iron levels, thyroid… what about homocystine, isnt’ that one of the ones that vegans have trouble with? thanks, peace, be well…
12:09 am on February 1st, 2012
This kind of honesty and objectivity does great things for the alternative health field.
You and Ann Marie are two of my favorite people on the web, with your open mindedness and sincerity. If I ever meet you it will be a pleasure.
12:16 am on February 1st, 2012
I generally like reading comments (not nasty ones).
I’m not real familiar with YouTube, but once I went to comment on someone’s video and I got a message to say something along the lines of ‘the comment has been submitted for approval’. I then notice my post appear within 24 hours.
I thought that was interesting. Is that an optional at all for you? i.e are you able to check comments and decide which ones should be allowed to be posted?
12:54 am on February 1st, 2012
First let me answer #7. Yes, you can take a Mulligan. If we can’t go back and get a 2nd chance when we don’t make a good shot the first time, who are we? That’s what you were talking about. Being honest, making amends, and regrouping. Hopefully nobody dies. Sad story.
Second..to your question of the day..I believe many people find you from Youtube so, no you shouldn’t close the Youtube site or the comments. Just don’t read them. Link to your blog and mention from time to time that you appreciate the comments on your blog.
About the diet thing, I like the integrated approach. I am mostly raw vegan. I don’t think there is any value in eating any animal products. I have and will continue studying the food values of all foods to make sure I am getting what I need.
My diet now includes so many fruits, vegis and greens that I never ate before so I’ve added, not taken away. Well, I did stop eating c++p. Also I realized that I am sensitive to gluten so I don’t eat gluten containing grains any more. I studied how the replace the good vitamins and minerals I may lose by not eating those. I don’t mind taking supplements if needed. Usually I find a way to do what is needed with food. I can throw almost anything in a smoothie to make up for some lost nutrient.
The protein issue is interesting. What do you/we get from meat? Protein. (Amino Acids are the building blocks, I find a complete profile in my SunWarrior Protein Powder.) Animal fat. (not good to have too much of that.) Yummy good stuff in the veg world that fit the bill. Oh yeah, exercise creates GOOD Cholesterol. What else…b12. Find it in all sorts of veg sources and a little study tells you what kind of b12 is best. Mine’s good. I can take a supplement if needed. I also read several reports that meat eaters have a lot of b12 deficiency too.
I have learned that a lite steaming will counteract some of the goitragens or thyroid negative parts of the lovely cabbage, kale, etc greens. A little steaming…that’s all.
Not sure about anyone else, but a bowl of quinoa with some lightly steamed kale, onion, and black eyed peas just makes me feel wonderful. Next meal is a huge salad.
We have to take responsibility to study all we can about our health and what we put in our bodies. Talk with our doctors. Find another one if he/she won’t listen and work with us. It takes time to turn the health boat around, but we can do it. It isn’t about being an absolutist about anything. It’s about learning and doing our best and when we learn more, we do more. When we know better, we do better.
I can learn from most people but there are some trolls out there too. Cmon…We’re all adults here. Use disgression and use your cynicism to help yourselves not hurt yourselves or others. Why use that energy to be mean. All it does is create more unhealthiness. Hopefully ignoring the ignorant and creating more and more great blogs like you have hear, Kevin, will eventually fill the bucket of dirty water with clean, drip by drip. Thanks for the blog. Much Love to you and Annmarie. Lynn

I agree with Holly, this has to be up to you.
As others say, these troll have nothing in their lives to be happy about, so they try to sabotage others. It’s a hit and run mentality, not honest disagreement of facts.
thank you for your honest post.

I loved the video – so very true for those of us in healthcare, I stopped associating with my peers because of all that kind of bullshit – couldn’t deal with the ego of it. Branched out on my own – see many many less people, do far more research, earn far less money, I’m not worried about getting 2nd and 3rd opinions if I’m not sure and feel so much happier in my heart. I think the most important thing for anyone in healthcare :first do no harm because you only have yourself to answer to. Also it doesn’t wash blaming the system, it’s no excuse – you have to take action against it. Thank you for your honesty – fantastic work

Your customer service is what I expect it to be … another reason to love you guys!

I would shut the comments off of YouTube, for sure – or just periodically go in and delete all the negative ones if you really still wish to collect some positive ones (to me, not worth it). You wouldn’t let these people in your personal space tearing up your place, right? Don’t let them destroy your cyberspace either. There is a difference between genuine constructive criticism and sheer “base” energy looking for an outlet, and I would think that etiquette is something you ought not have to explain. I guess that the blog and YouTube is the difference between having a nice gathering in your home and having a health product vending cart on a busy but more dangerous street corner downtown in a large city. You just have to handle things differently, due to the difference in circumstances. (Also, I wouldn’t doubt if some of the negative stuff might come from those on Big Pharma’s payroll to put negative light on all healing techniques that would cut into their profits).
Good points about the airlines! While we are at it – can we PLEASE get entirely rid of TSA? THAT is a bunch of “stuff” that no one needs, and to me, no one but especially American Citizens should not be treated this way at all – you were not far off when describing the experience as being treated like cattle – and it is honestly unacceptable (not to mention violating our natural rights laid out in the Constitution but that goes into a totally different place).
With health care, I understand the stance of using what is now termed conventional means to address things that are emergency and out of whack until it can temporarily restore some sense of order – but at that point, organic healing modalities need to be implemented to finish the job. To me, THIS is the crux of our problem. It isn’t that conventional medicine exists – it is that due to tricks like insurance (allowing us to delude ourselves into thinking it is “free”) and debunking all other therapies, we use conventional medicine FIRST and ONLY. I believe it should be used last (but not never). But if we did that, they wouldn’t make all of this money, as we can figure that much of what they are doing is actually better handled in a different way. It is up to US to say no to them, and to take responsibility for our own healing experiences, from food choices all the way through. Speaking of which, I suggest checking out Todd Caldecott’s “Food As Medicine” as I find this a wonderfully sound book – good stuff!
Thanks for a heartfelt blog post today – may your journey toward wellness be even more joyful!

Very interesting blog. No do not shut them (grumblers) off as at least these dysfunctional people are communicating and also we hope reading other positive posts that may provide the ‘chink’ in their learning block. A lot of people have closed somewhat damaged minds and thinking whereby they jump to the immediate negative thought that first comes into their minds. It is not their fault. As a UK resident with close USA links the more I see the USA system the more I am concerned. There is so little non-USA knowledge in your newspapers/ TV that you are thinking that the world can begin and end at the Atlantic/Pacific coasts. So the answer is that there is no perfection in the world and that all is varying shades of grey…BUT within knowledge that you may vehemently disagree with there may well be a grain of pure gold truth…if you look for it. By tossing all away in a fit of negativity you may deny yourself the opportunity to explore, argue and maybe learn and achieve personal growth and knowledge. Nothing is ever a waste of time. The most peculiar seeming facts can sometimes emerge as ‘well blow me down!’ moments when the knowledge all fits together. Good luck with the blog K&AM

Love the guy on the video…makes me think more of doctors, not less. Isn’t it funny that people would make derogative comments about YOU getting an IV voluntarily, when most of them would be glad to have a nurse stick an IV in them when they don’t have a choice. Feel free to turn off their comments, the rest of us don’t really care what they say anyway.
10:06 am on February 1st, 2012
I am so very interested in how you are healing your adrenals and digestion. Also, as of yesterday, i have decided that extremes, even if they are from good intentions are not very productive and sometimes very harmful.
I would like to comment on a raw foodist on the youtube. I give him credit for getting me into the juicing with his earlier videos. They were great and they led me into wanting to learn more about the power of raw foods. These day, I see that this person is way out of balance. His videos are often dark and sometimes he speaks of things the seem, to me, incomprehensable. Fasting: What I know of fasting for health is that you can fast one day per week and a couple of longer fasts throughout the year..when the body is ready. This person is fasting on water and honey and coconut water for weeks and he does it often.
Why should it matter to me? Because if I had watched some of his later stuff as a newbie, I would have gone running for the hills. I do not understand a the raw foods marter mentality…why do people use food to punish themselves or the opposite to make themselves seem superior? What makes a person want to fast consistently to the point that they do themselves harm? Is it a feeling that they cannot get pure enough? Is it a sense of self hate and shame so deep they can never be “good” enough?
I thought I understood food to be for healing. And I also thought I understood that it’s also about mental health and balance and spirituality (depending on your beliefs). That we are a whole person. Isn’t that what we complain about when referring to the AMA?..that “they” do not treat the whole person and depend soly on pills? I do not want to be made to feel less than if I choose to eat some meat or sugar and I certainly don’t want to go on youtube to learn and find some man blathering on about how people “stuff there faces” with food when he restricts his calories ON RAW FOOD and then cannot put it together as to why he goes on a peanut butter cup binge???…WHAT???…
Anyway, I am glad to have read this article. And I am grateful that I can discern what’s healthy and what’s out of whack. Just a note of consideration from the raw foods “experts” please. If you want people to get on board with a healthier lifestyle, my suggestion would be to tone it down a bit. The information has to be DIGESTABLE for us common folk..pun intended. Thank you
11:24 am on February 1st, 2012
Once a person realizes that he is responsible for 90% of his health and life and genetics 10% he/she will begin to learn what “their” body needs to live a good live and age gracefully. Turn the comments off – you tube people in general are not your audience, if they are they will come and make their comments here. Just keep doing what you are doing.
11:32 am on February 1st, 2012
I’m new here and I would like to know … do you answer any of these people? Some have very interesting questions and I would like to know the answers myself and how you respond to them … I find many of their personal stories interesting too just wanted to know if they ever get a personal response … I have been considering the raw food diet and it seems the more I read that even some of the huge raw food longtime enthusiasts are now saying not ‘all’ raw anymore I would like to hear more opinions about this Hope your day is good!
11:48 am on February 1st, 2012
Dear Kevin,
Thanks so much for what you do. You’re my favorite and your and Annmarie’s open honesty is refreshing. Don’t read those u-tube blogs brother, it’s not good for you!! We need you healthy!
11:59 am on February 1st, 2012
Negative comments are usually made by people who would rather criticize others than do anything about their own situation; or they are so narrow minded that they think their way is the only way and anyone who disagrees is not just different but wrong. I purposely read your columns and watch your videos because you are so open minded. Can you tell us a bit more about your current diet?

Kevin, you are so wise and are learning so fast. I love that you are sharing the information you learn with honesty. I really appreciate and trust your ideas and opinions and then I see how they fit in my world and can be useful to me. And I don’t have to put you down to remember my own common sense. Thank you, thank you for your ethical and considered thoughts. I love you and bless your presence in the world.

Hi Sharon, I don’t regularly answer here in the thread, but we gather ALL questions that are posted on the blog and then I address them in my weekly (sometimes twice weekly) Q & A posts! So if you have any questions, ask away and if you don’t a response, be sure to ask again

I think you are doing a great job, kevin and anne-marie! we can’t please everyone, but your knowledge base is invaluable…and using yourself as a guinea pig is, in my opinion, tantamount to discovering the knowledge in the first place. thanks for your continued support and willingness to learn. you consistently inspire me to go outside my comfort zone and keep learning. cheers!
1:55 pm on February 1st, 2012
Thanks for posting the video. That was inspirational to watch a doctor admit that he’s not perfect, and to layout a system where all doctors can admit the same.
Regarding YouTube comments, I’m going to continue your chiche’s and metaphors. You said: “Apparently, people who are nasty have learned not to spend any time in our house. Thank goodness.” On RenegadeHealth and your other sites, (in your house), definitely police comments and commenters. This is your house and you should keep it exactly the way you want. On YouTube, it’s more like the playground. Yes, you’ve paid to put the “jungle gym” with your time and effort put into your videos, but on the playground, everyone has a chance to say whatever, and they will. They may even post graffiti on the merry-go-round you love so much. YouTube and other commenters will take care of the trolls over time. Time exposes or promotes us all. The world is full of fascinating people, and most of the trolls are going to find a way to be trolls, no matter what you do. You get the advantages that come with uploading to YouTube, and they can be free to say stupid things. It’s not about you… it’s about them… so let them say whatever on the playground. They’re not throwing rocks or sticks and stones – just words and name-calling. Jim Rohn would say it’s like this… you’re planting seeds in the soil. You’re putting them out there and the birds are coming along and eating them. You’re putting seeds out there and the weeds are coming along and trying to choke off your seeds. But you know what happens when you pull weeds? More weeds grow. You know what happens when you chase birds? You leave the field. You just keep planting seeds. Control your house and let the weeds and the birds do what they are going to do. Your plants will thrive above them.
Okay… enough metaphor. My vote is to leave the comments on.
2:39 pm on February 1st, 2012
Yes, please share your “new” diet ideas with us. I just got my blood work back and although my MD said all was within “normal” range, I had a holistic doc (PHd) look at it and boy was I in trouble. Low thyroid, very low red blood cell counts, low D, etc. after eating a vegan diet for five years and taking all of the supplements recommended by people I thought “knew” what to do, which included Dr. Mercola, you
, and others, in order to “stay” healthy. So now I am revisiting my diet (and looking for a new MD) to bring myself back to good health. It’s hard!
3:58 pm on February 1st, 2012
Hi Kevin,
About the youtube comments;
I for one (and I know thousands would agree) are saddened by the level of evil or morons you come accros on youtube from time to time. And if you give them ANY kind of response they latch on to you like you won’t believe. I personally have had those kind of repsonses as well…o well, you can’t fix everything..
I vote for turning OFF your youtube comments, because you refer back to your website (here) where people have to register to comment, and you can beter mc the feedback, ie block out evil, not people who don’t agree. We need people to disagree with us so we are forced to take a harder look at ourselves.
Overall Kevin, you and Annmarie have a great thing going here, please keep up the good work and NEVER let idiots take up 1 second of your day.
Thanks,
Rico

Kevin-I have spent the last year trying to recover my fatigued adrenals. I am fairly new to your posts, but would love to hear what you have done to restore them. Mine are not recovered yet, and it is hard when it takes so long. This is my second bout with it and trying for the last!
8:31 pm on February 1st, 2012
I am not sure how many you get, but you should at least delete the comments that are really negative and inappropriate. It’s ok if someone disagrees with you, but it is how they do it. There is no place for people to be mean and dogmatically hateful. Definately delete those. If there are too many, then delete the youtube comments all together.
9:47 pm on February 1st, 2012
As others also requested, please share your knowledge about getting the adrenals healthy.
I just got diagnosed with stage 2 adrenal fatigue and will be going on herbals from the amazon for about three months and several hundred dollars. Added some meat to my diet and lowered carbs. Rather scary to find this as I’ve always been so healthy, even with HepC. Need all the help I can get!
Thanks Kevin.

Outstanding post. I just got my own blood test results last week and was amazed to find several of my numbers were different to what I expected. Some rethinking needed. I appreciate the way you speak openly about your own experience.
I wouldn’t worry about YT. People who are interested in your message will find their way to the RH blog. Storm in a tea cup.

Hey Christina, I’d only turn off comments on YouTube. If you read them, you’ll understand why.

Hi Kevin,
I too think you should trust your gut feeling and turn off the you tube comments. Don’t subject yourself and Ann Marie to people whose goal is to bring you down or worse.

Hi Kevin
I was at the airport in San Francisco same day you were leaving on Jan23 for Florida. I was hoping to say hi but you disappeared before I sorted out the mess of my flight cancellation. I could have yelled but being such an understated polite Canadian and all I missed the opportunity!
Thankyou for that Doc video. I admire his transparency and courage and desire to change the system. I hope to see more of this and all it takes is a small percentage like him and like you to create an evolutionary shift to raise the bar on being a human.
Speaking of human I see the “morons” of the world a part of our human condition and there by the grace of God go I. We all carry the seeds of greatness and destruction and to remember this when this encounter happens. I am just framing a perspective that embraces our humanity in a way that does not make us go to thinking of ourselves as better or worse
which ego likes to do …ranking for value. Having said that certainly those low level comments don’t uplevel the discussion so I guess you need to decide in your own heart what your intentions are to deliver your message for the greater good and where you want to put your energy to do this.
As always I love your integrity and honesty to always question yourself without always attaching to one view. That opens up more rich discussion and knowledge in the end.
Blessings always

Oh since you do look here for questions Kevin I need to ask you this. Since I live in Canada which is not as 2 tiered in health as in the US(yet!). I would find resistence from my doctor to go thru all these tests unless I present “sick” symptoms. Do you have resources from other Canadians to best get all the testing done that would cover more baselines for my health?
thanks
