Acid Reflux? No Problem… (Plus, Two Other Resources for You) : Exclusive Renegade Health Article

no-acid-reflux-here
You won’t get acid reflux if you eat at the Gerson Institute (Their spread for lunch!)

It’s been a crazy day today…

I almost thought I wasn’t going to be able to post anything, but I got lucky and there happens to be Internet on my flight from Dallas to Tampa.

It’s funny that only about a year ago, WiFi on a plane was a novelty and now that it’s more common, I feel like I’m slighted when there isn’t any.

Anyway, I’m headed to Sarasota to spend some time with Dr. Williams and work on a project that I think you’ll really enjoy. Stay tuned for this one since it will be our best and most comprehensive yet.

In this post, I wanted to share some resources and links with you that I think are valuable.

I don’t do this in a specific post often, but I do recommend things from time to time on the blog — as many of you know.

So right now, I have three resources that I think might be valuable. One for those who have acid reflux. One is a film that I watched over the weekend that is a must see. And finally, a new website I found last week that might interest you (particularly if you like food and technology.)

First up…

1. Acid Reflux, No Problem

I was turned on to this resource by a reader who told us that it helped them completely get rid of their acid reflux. I figured if it worked for one, it’s worked for many.

The program is called “The Acid Reflux Remedy Report” and it’s a natural approach to getting rid of annoying and sometimes painful acid reflux.

I remember the first time I ever had heart burn and reflux. It was actually after my 5 day water fast at True North. When you fast, your HCL production drops, so when you eat again, you could end up getting some pretty nasty indigestion.

The first day I was able to eat again, I had a bunch of fruit, but the second day, I got a little ahead of myself and ate some brown rice.

Within 30 minutes my stomach felt awful and I was experiencing heartburn and reflux. I promised myself never to rush into eating when I water fast again.

One of the common misconceptions about acid reflux is that people believe it to be too much acid, when in fact, the stomach isn’t producing enough. There are some good pointers in this acid reflux program, so I recommend if you have an issue with reflux that you check it out.

Click here to learn more about the program now!

Just a few notes on it…

Because not all health experts can agree on what is best and what isn’t, there are always things I disagree with in all programs, books, websites, etc. The trick is to not “throw the baby out with the bathwater” — as our friend Dr. Jameth Sheridan says maybe more often than necessary.

In this program, I’d recommend using the protocols that work with your specific diet needs. For instance, the recipes are not vegan, so if you are a vegan, you may have to adjust. Also there is a milk and 7-Up remedy that I would skip — not only because 7-Up isn’t something you should put in your body, but also because mixing the two together seems incredibly vile.

Finally, the price point — at just under $20 — is great and low risk. I love low risk products like this that have a great upside — particularly if it helps with your reflux or heartburn.

2. The Most Dangerous Man in America — Watch It!

A few weeks ago, I was at a Non-GMO fundraising event. This was an event to raise money for the initiative to label GMO products in the state of California.

I was talking to a man named Aaron who clearly was an old school Berkeley activist. He was talking about the old days in the East Bay when Berkeley really was “Berzerkley.”

Eventually the conversation turned to WikiLeaks and if it was right to leak that information. There were mixed reviews in the small group that had gathered around, but they all agreed that a man named Daniel Ellsberg was the father of leaking documents.

I had no idea who this was.

I asked and Aaron told me to watch a documentary called “The Most Dangerous Man in America.”

I noted it on my phone, thanked him, and moved on to another conversation in the room.

Three days ago, I was looking through my notes and found the name of the film.

It was perfect timing, Ann and I wanted to watch a documentary and there it was.

The film, as I would find out, is about the leaking of the Pentagon Papers during the Vietnam War.

It was a surprising part of history that I knew nothing about and I’m now wiser — maybe — for knowing it.

If you do or don’t know the story of Daniel Ellsberg, I’d totally check this film out.

You can get it on Netflix.

3. Like Food? Like Technology? There’s a blog for that…

The other day, I went for a run with the Berkeley runner’s meet up that I found on MeetUp.com.

It was my first run with them and we met in Oakland to run around Lake Merritt.

On the run, I met a cool woman who is the managing editor of a blog called Food+Tech Connect. Having a blog myself, I was interested in what it was all about.

My first thought was that she was on the other side — a food technologist who creates crazy food flavor concoctions in a lab — but I was wrong.

Food+Tech Connect is a site that brings together food policy and issues with the technology that can solve them.

One of the things we talked about — the run was 45 minutes, so we covered a lot — was how our food system can be better tracked to determine where our food is actually coming from. This is mainly to benefit food producers who want quality control, but as a side effect it gives us the consumer the ability to know exactly where what we eat was grown.

Other issues covered by Food+Tech Connect are the Farm Bill, how technology allows us to communicate about food issues and more.

I’ve subscribed to the blog and added it to my Google Reader, so you may want to do the same thing!

Here’s where you can get more info…

http://www.foodandtechconnect.com

That’s it for me today, I’ve got to shut down my electronics. LOL!

Your Question of the Day: Please share your favorite blog to read with everyone here so we can get some more awesome resources!

I like Bragg’s apple cider vinegar, water and honey. I used to “eat” tums like candy then went onto Prilosec until I found this. No more reflux for 3 years now.

I feel old! (I am 57). It is so weird to me that anyone would not know who Daniel Ellsberg is! (Sorry Kevin) But then I had to remember that the Vietnam War is not an event frozen in time, but is now a thing of the past. I am of the Vietnam War era. So Kevin, you are not to be blamed for not knowing who he is, I am to blame for living in the past and thinking that time does not move on! This was a chilling time in our US history and the fact that generations have their own events they remember and don’t relate to events they were never a part of is a reminder that we do need to remember and learn from history or else history will be condemned to repeat itself! My Father was in World War 2 and we used to hear all of his war stories. Maybe this is the thing: we don’t have so many story tellers anymore to help us remember (so history won’t repeat itself). There was also a movie with James Spader as Daniel Ellsberg. I think it was also called “The Pentagon Papers” (Like the book).

eat kefir or other live probiotic cultures – replenish an army to line that gut ready to take on the variety of intruders dumped in at random … the toxins that kill off the good guys… remember , the reflux is your clue to see what sugars you need to eliminate….quit making it feel overwhelmed – nourish it – give it some help – heal it – thrive – get some enzymes for your digestion – Himalayan sole – baking soda – fennel seeds … deep breaths … chill- peace and harmony in the body … et al – j

It’s clear to me that there is a lot of confusion about the “acid problem” and the “reflux problem.” I had both for years. After my neighbor died from esophageal cancer, I decided to go to the endocronologist for a look see. They told me I had a little irritation and a small hiatal hernia. Nothing that should cause the kind of pain I was experiencing. Never the less, he declared that I had too much acid and wrote me a prescription for Omeprazole. I soon found the over the counter brand and took that for years. There were so many foods I just couldn’t eat.

About that time I started eating large salads for my evening meal w/lemon and oil dressing. I felt better but was experiencing a lot of irregular heart beats. I suspected the meds. Trying to get off those things is like nothing you have ever tried. The rebound effect is terrible. I read that we might have too little stomach acid and that taking some vinegar or lemon should help temporarily. I did both and it helped a lot. About that time I decided to go raw and got off all grain products. I am sure that was the best thing I ever did. Now I read that gluten can be a problem whether or not you have crone’s. Aloe gel helps too, but I say, get rid of all grains. Now there is no need for anything to “fix” the acid. I can use quinoa and other seeds and nuts for a substitute for rice and other grains, but I choose to not eat cooked food for the most part. It is counter intuitive for me. I would think that more fiber and more raw would be more of a problem, but I can attest to it being better. And, Oh yeah!! No more irregular heartbeats. That stuff is dangerous.

I love Vivian Goldschmidt’s blog about Osteoporosis called, “The Save Our Bones Program.” I like it for the Osteoporosis info which includes lists if alkalizing foods and a lot more. I find it helpful for all my concerns about balancing my body chemistry.

Another newish blogger is Dara Dubinet. I have followed her on her Youtube channel since I became aware of the raw food diet. I learn from her every day. She is open minded within the raw food regime and is a raw food chef. She is not strict with a recipe and uses an intuitive approach in teaching raw food prep. Also she teaches about shopping, prepping and combining all sorts of foods that keep it interesting. I like her caring, kind, and thoughtful way of presenting her ideas. Much more than a “cooking” show.

Re acid reflux. While ‘Kev’ is correct that about 90-95% of the time, reflux, or what used to be called ‘Indigestion’, is caused by too little HCl, the technical reason is not enough free protons available to the specialized stomach cell to manufacture thes enzymes. The not-so-techie reason? Not enough minerals, and usually functional dehydration. For those who problem is mild to moderate, oftimes the appropriate (different for every person/case? of a high quality sea salt will solve the problem.
When the problem has reached more severe levels, then other mineral sources, and other stomach reflexes must be looked into. Any description beyond that, is not appropriate for this venue.

Thanks for the share Kevin. I agree with some of the other comments referencing ACV. As a holistic health coach in Tampa I have personally helped many successfully resolve their acid reflux issues. I personally use ACV to boost enzymes prior to consuming foods for increased digestion.

When I had a reflux problem my naturopath said, “It’s an overweight problem and it’s a wheat problem.” I was probably 40 pounds overweight at the time. I didn’t eat a lot of wheat, but on a visit to a friend’s daughter’s house for a few days, I was served a lot of wheat and had a terrible time with reflux. I finally told my hostess that I was having a serious problem with wheat, and I bought some things to eat instead. Within two days of getting the wheat out of my diet, my reflux had ended.

I later lost the excess weight, and have not had any more problems.

Through all that, I was aware of the need for more acid, not less, and used apple cider vinegar occasionally, but getting off wheat did more than anything else to help.

Anybody who still eats wheat needs to read the book, Wheat Belly, by Dr William Davis (I think that’s his name). He talks about how drastically wheat has been changed, mostly through hybridization, over the last 50 years, so it scarcely resembles the wheat people have eaten for thousands of years. There is far more gluten in today’s wheat, and there are gluten molecules that have never been eaten before. He takes all his patients off wheat, even those who don’t test for Chrone’s or gluten intolerance, and they almost all get over various chronic symptoms.

I’m a nutritional therapy practitioner who firmly believes our diets affect our daily state of being. My mom cut out most grains & other simple carbs & has been reflux free. She was taking Zantac or nexium at least once a day. I only experience reflux when pregnant & have linked it directly to carbs- even fruit! Plenty of protein, water, & veggies did the trick!

It was about 10 p.m. several years ago after I had packed my bags for an early-morning flight the next day when I had severe pain in my chest. My friend who was going to take me to the airport the next morning took me to the emergency department of the local hospital where I was diagnosed with an acid reflux problem. I left the hospital some time later armed with a list of what I should buy from the local CVS and how to take it, including Prilosec. By some stroke of luck, I had just received a monthly issue of Dr. Johnathan V. Wright’s Nutrition & Healing where he dealt with this issue. He said often acid reflux is diagnosed as too much acid but really is not enough acid which turned out to be the case with me. I took Betaine HCI Pepsin for some time after that and found Dr. Wright was right! I called the hospital and left a message for the doctor that saw me that evening but I never heard from him! I suggest anyone with this problem should read Dr. Wright’s article on this subject.

I tried OTC meds, cider vinegar and honey, in water and various other methods to get rid of acid reflux that plagued me for 2 years before discovering I was gluten intolerant!

Gluten in foods is a little known but fairly common cause of acid reflux and heartburn, so it’s well worth cutting all gluten out of your diet for a week or two before trying any type of remedies.

My heartburn was really painful and would last for weeks at a time – day and night, but now I never get it at all and can eat rich spicy foods and drink things like wine again without any discomfort at all!
