Are Your Skin Care Products Really Organic and Natural? : Renegade Health Finds

I was browsing around recently and saw this awesome video on skin care and beauty products…

Annmarie and I strongly support natural and organic skin care (as you may know!), but what happens in the industry is downright wrong.

This video does a great job at explaining all of it…

This video is AWESOME! I hope thousands – no MILLIONS see it!

Good video, I stopped using main stream things on my skin years ago. Folks who would never dream of putting an inorganic bite in their mouths sometimes don’t think about the fact that anything you put on your skin goes directly into your system. At least your body has a chance through the digestion process to deal with what you eat. But if you think the FDA is going to do anything about this, it’s time to get your head out of the sand. They’ve been in bed with the folks who poison us for profit a long time now.

Hmm, its nice that she can live in a black and white world. What will she do if Pantene is illegal if she can’t live without it? Get it underground?
She is certainly exaggerating things as well as outright giving misinformation. There is no evidence that skin care products cause any ill effects to people or the environment. What does ’super toxic’ mean anyway??
And lead is not put into lipstick. Where does she get her information anyway? Its a shame to use this kind of propaganda to make sales. If you really believe what this video says you’d better not use cosmetics at all.

Wow, just wow. I hate to be the one to tell you this, but EVERYTHING contains chemicals, and even natural ingredients – you know, the “safe” ones – contain trace levels of lead, carcinogens, estrogen disruptors, and all the other evils Annie Leonard is trying to scare you away from. Lavender essential oil contains over 100 chemicals.

Our drinking water contains lead, folks.

    Completely removing toxins is impossible.

If this act passes, good luck finding cosmetics.

The FDA is not in bed with people who poison you. The CFSC, rather, is trying to scare you with completely invalid science.

I manufacture 100% natural products. Guess what: Mine contain trace toxins too. Strawberries contain acetaldehyde, a toxin. Apples, cyanide. Olive oil, hormone disruptors.

Toxins in, toxins out! Where’s your toxin-free stuff now?

By the way, that lead in lipstick? Naturally occurring in our soil, water, and… oh! Red pigments mined from the earth.

Instead of fighting about this we should all just try to use things with the least amount of toxins as possible. Completely removing toxins might be impossible but lets at least try our best.

Pasi, that’s a great idea. Unfortunately, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics has already introduced legislation that, if it passes, will decimate the natural products industry, the one that everyone believes is chemical-free. And they used this video to kick off their efforts.

I hope some more people will do :)

her video seems a bit flawed. why doesn’t she give a solution of what you personally can do instead of demanding to ask the FDA to change. They have allowed so much harm to happen, plus the food system is a bigger problem anyways and FDA doesn’t do anything about that and probably didn’t bust the farmers with the contaminated eggs, so maybe we need something new, a NEW organization all together.

Last week on a talk show of a popular local FM radio station where I live, a guy (supposedly qualified) was saying “if everyone would stop eating red meat it would cause an ecological disaster!” Imagine that, LOL. Guys like you are starting to make sparks otherwise they would not say stupid things like “if you stop eating cows the planet will blow up”. And I totally agree with this video. Some will say “yea but toxins are everywhere”. We all know that…but what’s real important is that some of us plus more every day (thanks to people like Kevin, Annmarie and their friends) know the real problem is when they concentrate it and intentionally put it in consumers products. It’s like we know there’s water molecules in gasoline but we don’t want to add water in the gas tank of our car and it would be stupid to say “Water is everywhere so it doesn’t matter if we pour water in a gas tank.”

Wow, so many thousands of thank yous for the thankless task of even linking this vid and at least as many thanks to Annie Leonard & Natural News. I saw her Story of Stuff, which takes the glaze off of eyes that usually comes upon people when listening to economic talk. It’s just over twice as long as this, but is captivating, which makes time fly. I know the slap of reality can sting, but changing in response just brings sweetness.

Before you support legislation that is supposed to make cosmetics safer, I urge you to get the whole story. “The Story Of Cosmetics” video contains a lot of inaccuracies that will become apparent if you think about them for just a minute instead of just nodding your head. A man named Lee Doren made a video gently pointing out all the inaccuracies in “The Story Of Cosmetics”:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxO3bPNyWzo
You owe it to yourself to watch this video and get the other side of the story.

Even if you don’t agree with Lee Doren, I urge you to look at what happens when we pass this kind of legislation. A similar law was passed in 2008 in response to the “lead toy scare” of 2007. This law very nearly destroyed a large number of small businesses, including mine, and made it impossible to import many high-quality (lead-free) German toys.

These laws sound sensible but they are NOT written by people who understand how these industries work. This law ended up banning children’s library books because the people who wrote and enforced it weren’t aware that there were books like that in existence.

LOVE this video. Thank you so much for sharing it!
I love the idea Green Chemists…AWESOME JOB!!! It is so scary what is being sold as ’safe’. This is why I created my own line of skin care that has NO Harmful Chemicals. I have an 18 month old son and have only used products that I researched myself or created myself. We really have to take it as our own responsibility until MAJOR changes are made. I agree that this video should be shared with EVERYONE!!! : )

  15. Michelle Gilbert
    10:05 am on August 28th, 2010

Kelly, we all love the idea of Green Chemists, and they already exist and we already have many safe green products. Unfortunately, if the CFSC and EWG have their way, what those of us in the industry – many of us who create natural products – are trying to tell you is that you may not be able to make your own products or access natural ones anymore. For example, basil essential oil would be considered a carcinogen by the mere fact that it contains methyleugenol as well as natural impurities in trace amounts.

As for the gasoline example, this legislation is more like the government decreeing that NO water is permitted in gasoline, and any gasoline found to contain so much as a trace of water at a level of parts per billion would be banned. It’s impossible to achieve.

    Thanks for your comments, Sarah!

Unfortunately, Lee is using the FDA and Peer Reviewed Journals for his trusted information.

    This is the first mistake.

    He should tread carefully… :-)

Plus, people have been – for thousands of years – using natural foods and plants on their skin. Why in the last 50-60 years has it become necessary to use chemicals?

    Kev

  19. Cindy Jones
    10:49 pm on August 28th, 2010

Kelly, if you think your skin care products contain no harmful chemicals, you are probably mistaken. Its all a matter of what you think is toxic. The Campaign for Safe Cosmtics has tried to ban many things from cosmetics including alcohol, coffee and salt because they are considered carcinogens by the International Agency for Cancer Research. They also want to ban any estrogenic compounds. Estrogens are defined as anything that binds an estrogen receptor which includes many components of vegetable oils. So Phil, even though using coconut oil would be very safe and good for your skin, it still contains estrogenic compounds in it which the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics would like to see banned.
Kevin, why do you use the word ‘chemicals’ as if it is a bad word? All matter is chemical and the natural world is filled with chemicals. Phylloquinone may sound scary but it also goes by the name vitamin K. Just as botany uses more technical taxonomic names to be sure everyone knows exactly what is meant, so does chemistry. Phylloquinone is important in skin care and it naturally occurs in parsley and basil. I grow these 2 plants to use in my skin care products. Vitamin K has also been shown to cause cancer in rodents when injected though. Does that mean it shouldn’t be found in skin care products? The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics wants no detectable level of anything found to be a carcinogen. All plants contain natural carcinogens but we also know that they reduce the risk of cancer too.
Chemists are not bad. The idea of Green Chemistry was started years ago by the American Chemical Society and many chemists work with this concept in mind. I’m not saying that there are not toxins in our world that should be avoided, but I also would never take consider Annie Leonard or the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics as a good source of information about what is toxic.
If you want more information about skin care ingredients search for personalcaretruth (since links apparently are not allowed here).

EXCELLENT!!! I wish everyone would see this. I cleaned house about a year ago. I make my own antibacterial spray from purified water, a little Dr. Bronner’s, and some tea tree oil. My window cleaner is just purified water, vinegar (non-petroleum based) and a drop of Dr. Bronner’s. I only use Dr. Bronner’s soap to clean my skin. I wear no makeup any more and use organic cold-pressed olive oil or organic coconut oil on my skin. I quit using synthetic fertilizers on my yarden and only use Ocean Solution now. I’m still innundated with chemicals, I know…bpa in store receipts for example and the items I do use contain trace things; but, I can control what I bring into my home, put on my skin and put into my body to GREATLY reduce harmful toxins. I choose to go as natural and safe as possible. To Cindy above, no I don’t want vitamin K in any skin care product. I only want to get that through my diet…giving my body what it needs nutritionally. Just my opinion. As far as the FDA goes, I would not trust them to oversee anything. I believe they are corrupt beyond saving and need to go. They are in bed with greed and big money and don’t care about true health because true health would eliminate so much of Big Corp. Just my opinion. Great post, Kevin! :-)

just a note to Cindy…they DO in fact still use lead in lipstick
    read http://greenwoman.typepad.com/biggreenpurse/2007/10/get-the-lead-ou.html
    and http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=3722013
now granted these are a bit old now but because of them, things are starting to improve.

and Kevin and Annmarie don’t have to use a well known video to get sales as you so claim…

and I don’t wear make, never have, never will but I do use Annmarie’s products and they rock!

I won’t get into a big debate about things with people here but will leave it at this… each person has the choice and the right to use whatever they want…I don’t wear makeup, I’m vegan, eat probably at least 80% organic, recycle, reuse, repurpose and am not materialistic, live a simplified lifestyle…it works for me…but what I do doesn’t mean it’s ‘right’ or that it’s what everyone else should do… make up your own minds as what you think is best for you, your family, the environment and enjoy life…

Hi Kevin. I did splurge and purchase something from AnnMarie’s line, and while I trust that it is pure and not harmful, I noted that none of the ingredients were listed on the label. Granted, the bottle is very small, but maybe you could put a hang tag on it. What if I were allergic to something in the product and had a bad reaction? Couldn’t this open you up for a lawsuit? Please protect yourself and check into this.

It would be nice if there were such as a thing as 100% pure. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics has consumers believing that manufacturers are intentionally adding harmful ingredients to their formulations. This type of information is spread not to educate but to induce fear. In the above video, hats off to the creators for including babies and skull and crossbones. If that doesn’t induce fear, nothing will.

I am the co-founder of Personal Care Truth, a one stop portal that provides truthful information about personal care products based on scientific facts. My partner and I created PCT because we were tired of the misinformation and scare tactics circulating on the internet. The CFSC and EWG are not credible sources for cosmetics.

Take the time to educate yourselves. http://www.personalcaretruth.com

@Cindy, what planet are you living on? That is an ignorant comment. There is PLENTY of documented evidence on these ingredients. Also you misunderstood the whole message about Pantene. She’s not saying she WANTS to keep using it.

Anyway, this is a great video, with lots of great info!

The only thing I disagree with is the point at which we can make a difference. The chemical companies are “in bed” with the FDA, so they’re not gonna do much. Sure, we can still push. But what really drives the market is WHERE WE PUT OUR MONEY.

If we 1. Educate ourselves and learn what to look for in a good, safe product and 2. choose THOSE products instead of the harmful ones, THAT will send a message to the companies that we’re NOT INTERESTED in there chemical stews!
