Can Not Believing In Supplements Harm Your Health – The Renegade Health Show Episode #496

I can’t say I’ve been around this planet for too long…

But what I do know is that nothing is guaranteed. Even in the last few years, I believed that taking as much chocolate as I wanted (yes, raw) was healthy.

What happened was quite the contrary. It DESTROYED my health. It’s my fault. I believed in something that was not completely true AND I ignored the signs that were telling me I was on the wrong path.

Beliefs are only what they are. Beliefs. They are good and bad all in one.

They can help you accomplish amazing things and the next day they can make you look like a complete idiot. (I know from experience).

We gotta be humble… so today I break it down when it comes to supplements and if they can or cannot harm your health.

(BTW: if you had trouble with the application for the 30 Day Transformation, I’ve put the questions below!)

Take a look…

Your question of the day: Are you going to fill out an application?

Click here, scroll down to the bottom of the page and leave your comments now!

I’ve posted the application here again… click here!

If you still can’t get it, here is the text below. Please copy this and post it into a document and send it over!

Nope. I’d love to but don’t need to lose weight. Did forward it to dh and best friend. :-) (BF says she needs to lose weight, not I say.)
And the link works fine. It wasn’t clickable the first day I checked.

i agree with you about backing up your non-supplement stance with blood work and i have done that

as for vitamin d, i urge you and your readers to check out the info that dr mercola tallks about on his website, as far as absorption from the sun, etc
it is an eye opener to say the least

No, I do not need to lose weight. (95 pounds) My husband neither. Doing the Hippocrates program brought his weight down big time. He is now 148 pounds. (35 pounds) May be you could give me some advise on how he should not lose MORE? We just happened to talk about it yesterday. He is doing the program 100 %. and he can’t eat any fruit and his only sweetener is stevia. Since we both exercise regularly we use Sun warrior protein powder with rice milk or nut milk. Other protein sources on this program are leafy greens and lots of sprouts. (juiced or not). Other than that he looks great AND we got great news: The tumors on his thyroid are SHRINKING so for now surgery is no option. It would be great if you just could help me out quickly on my question. Thanks!!

    Hi Kevin & Annmarie,

you are right: I take the blood test in France and they finally test my 25-OH vitamin D in my blood. It was not in the standard test, so the doctor didn’t want to do it. My level is 80 nmol per liter or 32 ng/ml, which is at the low level for “normal” people… I was surprise because I get so much sun from April to October by bike riding and take supplement (1000 IU per day) from November to April. I am now double my supplement in vit D. My doctor would not believe it, but now I have the blood test. He didn’t want to test B12 level. France has a universel health care insurance, but it become a two speed healthcare system: the minimum testing or no testing until disease for everybody and one private healthcare system with high-tech medicine.

No, I will not apply to your program: I have not weight to lose and you will not visit me in France :-(

    thank Kevin
    Dr. Jerome in France

PS: could you fix the link of the full yesterday interview in inner circle ?

I believe nature has clues for those with eyes to see. The wooly worms this year had no stripes (were all black) which means a hard winter, & that is sure accurate. Perhaps the groundhog has some info if we pay attention! : )

I have an unrelated request: Kevin, when you were suffering Candida, what protocol did you use to get it under control? Is there a resource you could point us to? Also, are you able to eat fruit as much as you want now, or do you still have to limit the amount? Thanks for all you guys do!!!

I am not against supplements. However, how can you trust the FDA standards of what levels of nutrients one needs? The FDA changes there minds about everything constantly. How can one know what they truly need? I had my blood tested and am low in Vit. D but “feel” fine. I don’t necessarily have a problem taking Vit. D supplements but do I really have to match up to the FDA standards?

I’ve been meaning to ask about Johnny5’s name for ages. Thanks for satisfying my curiosity, LOL! I thought he might have been the fifth Johnny but that would have been really weird!

I’m glad you mentioned testing (Vit D is the only “vitamin” I take and it’s not really a vitamin) but assimilation and detox are just as important. I don’t agree with all the RDA stuff. I don’t think they’re all accurate. From experimenting over years I’ve discovered that one orange a day will prevent colds while Vitamin C, 1000mg a day will prevent them only while taking it. If you miss an orange for a few days you don’t get sick. With Vitamin C that’s what we experienced. We need all the other 20000+ phytonutrients that are packaged with the vitamin C in the orange and that sadly is not the case with a supplement. That’s just one example. I do think in the case of bipolar, schizophrenia that isolated compounds are necessary as they cannot possibly consume the amounts of vitamins their brains are burning up. BUT, perhaps lots of AFA’s would work too.

Testing is good. I totally agree with that one Kevin!

Not needing weight loss. I have a thyroid condition, food mold allergies and vitamin D deficiency (according to blood tests and I spend way more than 3o minutes daily outdoors). I eat raw and really well. I take supplements for hormone balance and deficiency. Take D3, raw spirulina, calcium, magnesium, chaste berry tree extract, pro-biotics (mold allergies do not allow me to eat fermented foods), maca for hormone balance, B6, ginseng and pure cold-pressed gogi juice

I said yesterday that I believed supplements shouldn’t be necessary if you’re eating right and I still think that, but want to qualify what I said. I do actually take some supplements currently – a daily iron tablet (prescribed for anaemia, which is a side effect of another illness) and folic acid – also prescribed as I have to take chemo drugs once a week, which strip the folic acid from my body. I’m also currently taking a B complex supplement while I transition to a vegan diet, just to make sure I’m getting what I need. I do think that normally though, if you’re in good health and are only slightly deficient in an area the best option is to look to getting that sorted through the diet rather than supplements and that taking supplements when you don’t need them can be harmful – the research in T Colin Campbell’s The China Study shows that taking supplements can do harm in some circumstances.

Recently, I caught a Staph/MRSA infection post surgery for a broken foot.
As vocally, Pro-Alternative Health as I am, you aren’t going to rub honey on it.
Immediate IV Antibiotics were needed. Two weeks of it, then followed up by a month of pills.
I took many supplements, with probiotics and green smoothies, leading the daily list.
I knew that VitD3 supplementation was very important and necessary.
Even though I live in sunny Florida and my last checked level was 55 ng/ml, I knew I had to up the dosage, as I knew I wasn’t going to be out in the sun for a while.
I went up to 5,000 IU’s a day. A few times, even more.
I just had a LEF blood test. It was 65 ng/ml, post op and post infection.
I “believed” that the VitD3 helped.
Along with the numerous supplements and medicine of course.
Now I’m back to my pre-surgery routines.

I take a number of supplements and I have to tell you I feel really great and have never felt better in my whole life – and I’m 60 years old! I listen, research and read, and have come up with a combination of supplements that are working. I don’t think we can get it all from our food – not in today’s world. I’m a total believer in supplements!

  23. Amy
    8:02 pm on February 2nd, 2010

No I won’t be filling out an application. I do need to lose weight, but have gotten back to a high raw diet and working it out myself. Loving green smoothies – don’t know why I didn’t try them sooner!

Anyway, for those who are concerned about supplements, not all supplements are created equal. For a vitamin supplement, make sure that you are getting a whole food supplement. Then you will not have to worry about potential adverse side effects.

When I lived in Arizona I worked with some great people that now are running The Windhawk Clinic. If you ever get out that way, you two should definitely visit their place. They are a married couple that are raw foodists and really knowledgeable people. You would love talking with them – kindred spirits. :)

    Blessings!

Glad to see you are going to try vitamin code D3 and sell the product as well, which is great news. It’s a tremendous product that I have been using because it is whole raw vegan food and it works better than D2, or for that matter, any other D2/D3 supplement. BTW have you ever interviewed Jordan Rubin?

That would be a no on the filling out the application for me. My weight is good and you probably would not want to come to ‘Colts territory’.

    hi guys-
i am feeling a little unsettled about all of the vit d emphasis. did you know vit d is not a vitamin at all, but actually a secosteroid (like a hormone.) and it is an immuno supressant. it acts as an anti inflamitory and supresses the immune response, so you get a false sense of feeling better. a low level of vit d actually indicates that there is an l-form bacterial infection and the vit d receptors have been turned off. in the long run supplementation has a negative effect because with the immune system functioning at a low level these dangerous bacteria have the opportunity to flourish and wreak havoc. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE take a minute to investigate this further. you are truth seekers and i know you would not want to be giving out unreliabe information. check out the MARSHALL PROTOCAL and http://www.bacteriality.com thanks for listening!

    HI Kevin and Annmarie,

I went to the doctor today just for a check up. My doctor noticed that I had lost weight, and I told her it was due to the raw vegetarian diet. I’m not vegan, I still include kefir, and a little Greek yogurt.

She was very supportive of how I am eating. She did want to test my levels for calcium and iron though, which I wanted to see where I was with those things anyway.

I totally beleive in getting nutrients from our foods, but we have to understand that our food doesn’t have all of the good stuff in it that it originally did.

Sadly, some of us may need supplements, and unless you get tests done, you’ll never know unless you develop a health issue to which might have been avoided or caught early with some tests.

I am a believer of the bible, and once the “fall of man” happened sin changed everything, including our vegetation. I would like to get some rock dust for my garden though. We can only do the best we can within our means.

By the way Kevin and Annmarie, can you please reiterate for people to be nice on the board with posting? One person cussed and used God’s name in vain. That did offend me, and I do not think its necessary on this board.

We all have different beliefs on here, and thats fine, but a bit of consideration when posting would be appreciated. Usually people are pretty considerate around here.

You guys are great! Would love for you to come to my house, but I don’t need to lose weight anymore. Once I went raw the pounds fell off.

    Thanks so much!

Vitamin D info (watch all of it):

I had an interesting comment the other day on Facebook from a woman who was feeling sluggish on a raw vegan diet. She added in Vitamin D and she felt better right away and now has boundless energy. The Marshall Protocol doesn’t exactly have a great track record. Our natural sunlight is being blocked in North America and Europe. We NEED it.

I know you are very good friends with David Wolfe and he advocates eating raw cacao, in abundance, as much as we care for, I’ve heard him say.
So what do you think about that, knowing that it has destroyed your own health in the past? And does that affect your friendship with David?

Here is my thing with supplements. They are just that ’supplements’. As in you’re diet should be carefully planned out enough that the majority of your nutrient needs are taken care of through real food. however I do fully agree that supplements are completely necessary to achieve optimum health and longevity. Furthermore they will help you achieve it faster with less struggle.

Lastly, this is the kicker for the supplement debate. I don’t believe anyone should be taking more than 5-10 supplements at any given time. If you are taking more than 10 you are probably choosing the wrong ones. You want to choose supplements that have multiple functions in the body and not just one specific function. Furthermore supplements should act in a supporting role-not stimulating or supressing your body’s functions but merely providing the materials that it needs to do whatever it is your body needs to do. In summary your supplements should act intelligently.

I feel whole food supplements are very safe.

When you break vitamins down (example B1, B6) I heard they act like medications. I do not know if this is accurate but I am concerned about it.

I’ll say this about visualizations. They do not work. Except when they do.

Visualizations occur naturally, once you have committed yourself to achieving something. You naturally indulge in fantasies of winning once you have decided to go for the win, no matter what.

I assure you, Kevin and Anne have indulged in fantasies of having a television show, but that’s only after they decided to commit to getting one….so they don’t really see it as “visualizing” or “wishing” they see it as “an upcoming reality.” They see it as a fact, which is exactly how all the books tell you to do it.

    Dear Wunder Couple,

LOVE your show! I agree with you re: supplements and testing. The problem I have is how do we know for sure the levels that someone has determined (for Vit d, B12, ect,…) are the right ones for us? How are these levels determined? What if we need new ones for 100% raw fooders? Maybe you and Ann Marie have just the right amount of Vit D or iron? Can we say 100% for sure that someone’s levels aren’t correct if they feel very healthy and look fantastic when it is someone like Tonya Z.? Afterall, once the majority of people based their decisions on the fact that the world was flat, for sure.

I will address jamison’s comment in part, since so many people have asked for it to be addressed. Vitamin D regulates the immune system. I’ve read that some people/groups suspect that the supplemental form of vitamin D COULD act as an immune suppressant while sunlight-derived vitamin D will support & regulate it. But one of the main reasons that vitamin D has been so widely researched as of late is that a doctor discovered that his patients who received vitamin D supplements had better immune systems than the ones who didn’t supplement.

A doctor talking about vitamin D in the last year or so said that it takes 48 hours after sun exposure WITHOUT WASHING the skin, for our bodies to manufacture the vitamin D from being in the sun. The conclusion was that daily bathing is one of the reasons people are deficient in vitamin D, even in sunny places like Florida. So maybe week-long camping trips by the lake aren’t such a bad idea. ;)

Can’t watch the vid just yet, but the question I want to answer is whether not taking supplements is harmful or not. This begs a more important question of whether even our whole raw foods are nutritious enough to leave you nourished after the digestion process. Yes, there needs to be an abundance of nutriment in foods so you’re left with something to carry you past the point of the whole digestion/assimilation/elimination process. I believe the problem is mainly:

monocropping leaving the soil without the nourishment that comes with the diversity of decay from polycropping.

chemical fertilizers push the growth, leaving the plant empty inside.

pesticides/fungicides/herbicides kill of the microbial & fungal diversity, which when in balance forms a symbiotic/mutualistic (cooperative) relationship with the food plants.

This has caused genetic degeneration over successive generations since the beginning of the “Green Revolution” & genetic rehab is possible & so desparately needed to be pushed into the mainstream! Shall we?

  47. Nick
    1:44 pm on February 3rd, 2010

Oh yeah, supplements are then needed to make up for the lack in our food, not to mention to counter the toxicity we’re exposed to in our environment we inhabit. Then speaking of habits……… Now lastly I believe we’re better off steering clear of standard American supplements cuz they’re pharmaceutically derived, so burden our livers. Our bodies our attuned to herbs & vitamins from fermentation cultures, like some supplement brands offer. Pharms are petro-chem sourced & so foreign to our bodies, hence the liver probs compromising any point in taking those kinds at all!

That movie is hilarious, my fiance and I were just talking about that if you had a “Groundhog Day” day and it was a good day…I wouldn’t mind repeating it. It just matters if it was a good day or not. Sorry that’s completely off topic! :)

HELLO!!! I Just wanted to say a few words ask a few questions :) First I would like to start with how I LOVE YOUR SHOW! I have to say every single question I have looked to have answered has been from you guys! no joke! EVERY SINGLE ONE. LOL! I’m new to raw food. Very new I should say… going on day 14 today. but I had been doing some research prior to my change. I’m 23 years old, mom to 3 children ranging in age from 6years to 8 months.. and I have DEFINETLY been spreading the word of how wonderful your show is and if they have any questions to go to your blog!or youtube and search the show! I do have one question… you may or may not have answered this at some point? I just don’t have the funds $$$ to buy these $500 blenders/dehydrators/juicers…or things like that I have very cheap versions of these items…will I still benifit from the food I’m making?? I know I WILL obviously but I guess what I mean is how much better is it REALLY to have these fancy things?

For whoever talked about not trusting FDA/RDA amounts of nutrients, the amount Kevin mentioned is way above the RDA for vitamin D, because research has shown a much greater need than what the government recommends. A couple of years ago, when I was hospitalized for serious complications of diabetes, my vitamin D level was checked for the first time ever. My level was 11. I have been supplementing since then, and it gradually went up. Now it is 60-something. I keep a good stock of vitamin D3 & use it all year. I have been able to do all kinds of other wonderful supplements over the years to help my health. My personal approach is to use supplements to fill in when the most nutritious diet available is still leaving gaps. I cracked up when I read your email message saying “Get a test, and then we’ll talk.” :)

Regarding supplements. Go to Wellnessresources.com and you will find everything you want to know about supplements. Byron Richards is a Board-Certified Clinical Nutritionist for 25 years, he is the world’s leading authority on nutritional supplements, their uses and benefits. His has his own line of superior high quality supplements, his company has been around since 1985 all of his supplements are specially formulated by him. His company has an entire health system, to actually help you get results for the majority of issues that may be troubling you. The guy is awesome, check him out, read his articles, listen to his podcasts. Mike Adams “The Health Ranger” also recommends him very highly. As Byron says, “Be in the know”…

I will not apply because I’m 61, 140# with no health problems. What dramatic changes could there be?
About supplements, I take a spirulina blend and liquid minerals. Otherwise I am very suspicious about them. It just seems to me that a raw vegan diet should provide what we need.
Yes, I am getting a blood test because you have harped about it for so long.
What are the problems of low vit D? And who knows what levels we should take?

I’m taking the vitD3 and look forwad to my next blood test.
hope you two are doing well, the superbowl will not be the same without the Steelers:(

yea, im gonna fill one out, once again you need 1 hr out in the sun,to get your dailey dose of vit.d and it dont cost you nothing!!i think once people realize, the free radical therory they will be able to analize their health, and diagnose their situation and use their own judgement on healing themselfs.

I use a Franklin Chef blender for cold green shakes, and for hot soups that I blend. It works very well. I think I paid about $58 and it does a fantastic job.

    HI Guys,

    Firstly- love your show !

I had the pleasure of attending David Wolfes seminar in Sydney yesterday- what an inspiring guy!

I’m baffled by the huge void between your raw chocolate beliefs though. As you probably know, David says raw Chocolate is good for bones and longevity and contains magnesium and phosphorus- both great for bone health. it comes from a nut, so how can it be bad Kevin?
I would love for you to do a more in depth show about why u believe its bad & what exactly it did to your health.

Thanks in advance and thanks for all your great and inspiring work- I watch your shows every day.

    Lennie.

yes, i sent one in and it would be reassuring to know that you received it, time frame for your decision, etc. you know details about how & when you are going to decide, etc. also, if you are going to call and ask questions because something may have been left out of the app that a personal call would clarify. think it is a great idea total health makeover!

Kevin, excuse my English, I am French but you will have to be very careful with your computer on your sexual organ, like during the show today. You will never believe the harm that you are doing to your body. It is pure radiation. Be very careful with that. I love so much and I feel sorry to see that.

Our teenage daughter is thirteen going on thirty. She is mad now that we censor everything she watches. There is very little on Television today that we find appropriate for any teenager. Several months ago, we discovered that you simply can Get Free Diablo 2 Items Online. along with quite a few other shows. This is wonderful as we can watch a demonstrate and determine whether or not it truly is suitable to get a child of her age. She is really mature for a thirteen year old, but there are points we still do not feel she needs to know about. It is a fine line we continuously walk, but it’s part of our employment as parents.
