It’s really up to you about cutting your beard or not but since you asked our opinion, I’d say nix the beard but keep the curly head of hair. I think the beard detracts from your wonderful smile! :) Thanks for all you do to keep us informed and on the path to great health. Many New Year’s blessings to you and Annmarie.

No, don’t shave the beard! The beard is great. Like any hair it grows out uneven and has to be trimmed/shaped from time to time. It does look very classy close to your face and adds to your appearence. Sometimes when beards are allowed to go wild, they actually detract from good appearances. Just my opinion…

    Hey Kev,

Go with what you and AnnMarie like on the beard. You both look healthy and radiant and that’s what I see.

I love learning about all of these matters.

I just learned from Wolfe that magnesium is fundamental to building iron. He suggested that these levels seem to go hand in hand. It was a discussion about the conversion of trace minerals into heavy metals on a recent audio file he gifted a few days ago.

In my recent blood profile, my magnesium level was not listed – so I wonder if that requires a different testing method. Did you by chance get a result for your Magnesium? I understand it is generally found to be low in the general population.

I use a topical magnesium supplement from time to time. Please address magnesium.

I don’t know if you’ve talked about testing neurotransmitters or not. That was of extreme help for me.

I have no opinion about looks. I think your personalities are stellar and they totally shine through every day on the show!

I’m a bit confused about all the tests to ask for. Even Direct Labs has soooo much listed. I’m going to ask my doc tomorrow what he can do for me, but I have Kaiser and I doubt they do too much outside of the standard norm of testing. Can you make a checklist of tests to take that you recommend?

I like the advice about not just doing one test as the “snapshot” of who you are for your whole life! That was wise counceling.

    cheers,

As for the beard, you know what they say about pleasing people. Do what makes you happy. Either way you radiate health.

Keep the hair a little long, but not a super short, and the facial stuff a little too– but don’t let it get out of control some some of the heath dudes out there (you know who I’m talking about, I needn’t name names) because it just starts to looks a little “out there” and kinda tacky. Don’t me wrong– I like it longer than shorter, but sometimes less is more.
Bottom line, do what Ann says, she’s the one that looks at you all day!

There’s a health couple out there, and as much as I like her, she’s taken on his grimey looks. They NEVER tie back their hair when they prep food, and I don’t remember seeing them wash their hands between touching stuff…ugh! Maybe the younger set doesn’t mind, but I do.

Hey, I have a question for you. I was wondering what kind of water you drink, or maybe you could direct me to a good water filter. All the ones I have seen are very expensive. I am concerned about the bad stuff that is in water from plastic water bottles. Thank you. :)

  30. Muriel
    7:48 pm on December 29th, 2009

The beard is warm for the winter but trimmed and short looks clean and attractive.
As far as the curly hair, i think its becoming,
Of couse AnneMarie should have the last say!!
    Happy New Year.

  31. Janet
    7:50 pm on December 29th, 2009

Ah I like curly hair too! Don’t get it cut too short. Probably also because I don’t have it and couldn’t keep a curl even with a perm! Even though it’s curly I can’t imagine it getting out of hand and you “fro-ing” it. It is just the right amount of curls. AnnMarie must love it.

Beards are great. You have a nice full one and should be proud of it AND it is cold outside up in CT so I think you should keep it on. You have to wait until at least the ground hog comes out on February 2nd, Kevin! Groundy ain’t afraid to show off his a furry beard so that should teach you to be proud of yours!

  34. Margaret Hess

I feel men look silly without a beard. You look great right now – why make any of it shorter? I can only see cutting if you were where it is very hot.

  35. Sharon
    8:13 pm on December 29th, 2009

Whatever Annmarie likes and whatever is most comfortable for you should be your decision!

Personally I think beards should be the norm but our culture unfortunately perceives beards in a negative way. I don’t really like long hair on a guy myself. Back when I was a teen I thought it was cool but those days are long over. In my area it seems that only very immature and sloppy older guys still have long hair. Very few successful ones do–Frank McKinney comes to mind, some heavy metal singers, etc. I say leave the really long hair to females. Your hair’s a nice length now.

Long hair all the way–like Brandon Lee as Eric Draven in the Crow or Frank Zappa and that unique goatee. Hair and beards just help make the man! It’s all about personality and using our appearances to help ourSelves shine through. And then there are men who keep really long dreadlocks…soooo beautiful. First off, the hair is a reflection of experience, strength and wisdom. Remember the story of Samson and Delilah? Long hair just makes me interested in wanting to know more about that person. Yes, perhaps that’s a little shallow but in a world filled with men in suits, long hair and beards, at least for me, are symbolic of creativity.

Hi! Thanks for the answers….about the iron….I was surprised for the 1st time, when I couldn’t give blood at the blood mobile last week due to my iron levels being normal. They have to be 2 points above the normal in order to give. Just thought you might want to know that. So, thanks for the tips. About the beard…if Ann Marie’s face can handle it, then more power to ya!! Go for it! Everyone needs a change now and then. (Besides, I like you no matter how you look! LOL! ;)

Kevine…You asked for it ~I detest beards !
They look dirty and unkept to me .
Unruly hair and beards make men look like they just rolled out of bed, and don’t care how they look .
Lots of older men like to wear beards, as they are tired of shaving ….but beards sure do make men look OLD and shaggy !
If you want to look younger, for goodness sakes, get a shave !
Cut off curly your locks !
You always dress so upbeat and classy for your type of work…then you put the shaggy dog on top of your shoulders .
I don’t know your age, but I think you are probably younger than you look, and Ann Marie
looks like a young woman marrried to an old geezer . lol ~ Just kidding…sort of …
You probably don’t want the corporate look, but why don’t you try something different….hairs always grow back .
Go get the physical look…shave your head and face…get the Yoga look !!
Hey dude…got for it, nothing ventured …nothing gained .
    You are physical…aren’t you ?…
Get rid of that whimpy hair on your head and face !
But I must say…I would love to have your head of hair ! But I’m a female ~ ;-)
We all will still love you, no matter what you do ~ Happy New Year ! ! ! ~
I look forward to seeing the new YOU !

hmm, I like the hair, but you should definitely shave the beard!

  59. Jentree
    10:32 pm on December 29th, 2009

    KEEP THE BEARD!!

I have curly hair and the best way to cut curly hair is to do it yourself unless you go to a salon that specializes in curly hair.

The best way to do it: Use whatever method you normally use to cleanse your scalp. Let your hair air dry. Do not touch it while it dries.
Have Ann Marie or someone you trust, cut your curls, one by one!

Curly hair is different than straight hair and requires different care. Cut one curl at a time….trim…whatever. Don’t pull the curls out while you cut…leave them curly, that way you are sure to know how short they will be after cut.

About Weston A Price….what are the names of the two foundations you mentioned?? I couldn’t understand the name of one of them. I’ve been wondering about the claims of the Weston A Price Foundation and I’d like to see what the other foundation has to say.

    Thanks!

Back in the day, I had the full mountain man beard and hair down past my shoulders so I feel fairly qualified to comment on this one.

The hair does put some years on you, but that’s not really an issue with your baby face. ;-) Might even give you a little more gravitas. Not that you need it, like. My problem with the beard was that I was always getting crud in it and the hair was a drag while cleaning my teeth, etc.

So, how about growing out your curls and a goatee a la Billy Connolly? I think that’d really suit your head shape. Or how about shaving your hair right down and growing out your beard. Kind of a vegan biker look? ;-)

Your last live blood test you commented that you were surprised that your blood was not as wonderful as you expected. If you are exposed to microwave radiation prior to your test it will show the platelets sticking together.Yikes! Cell phones, computers, WiFi, CFL bulbs, dirty electricity, electrosmog. Kevin, Thanks for opening up the discussion regarding iron. I’ve had a lot of experience with iron deficiency that’s taken me some time to understand. After 3 serious episodes of exercised induced anemia I’m interested in how my switch to a raw food lifestyle might impact my iron levels and I want to find a way to eliminate the drug store iron supplements I’ve taken. After crawling out of the West Coast trail, I took a bottle of Ferrous Gluconate with me to New Zealand hoping not to repeat the same scenario. However after sitting on a rock unable to complete the last day of a multi-day climbing/hiking backcountry trek I was again seriously frustrated. I had always understood that it took a while for iron store to get filled and be available by the body for use. But as I sat on that rock I decided to take several Ferrous Gluconate pills and was amazed that after about 30 min I was able to hike my way out. I’m curious if anyone has had any experience using Spirulina for extreme sports – they are in pill format – light – and contain easily digestible iron. I’d love to talk to someone that has some insight….

Regarding the beard – good to mix it up – as with life.

Hair? I was just thinking that its fun to watch it grow episode by episode. Lengthwise – you have nothing to worry about until you look like Mat Monarch :-)
You don’t even need to cut/trim anything until it gets hot, late spring, accept any mustache hairs that curl into your lip. You just got to that soft beard petting stage. Ann Marie must love petting it :-)
I vote for you Keeping the hair. Who knows, the other people on this board who think you should cut it may actually like their guys chests waxed, so I wouldn’t listen to them and I would revel in your hairy man-ness if I was you. Its your right!
Vote for Hairy Man-ness and save the environment by sparing the razor, yay!

Myself, I just don’t like taking a knife to my own throat every day, in whatever form. Besides, what do I care. I don’t have to look at myself. If Ann-Marie complains, for you that’s different. If you’re worried about perceived credibility, well you’re either credible or you’re not. Why can’t such complainers hear the din of clean shaven liars out there, or even recognize such? It should reflect good on you that you’d rather spend your time wiser than fussing over how you look. Sorry for writing duh after duh, butt–

Beard in the winter …. clean shaven in the summer …. but to the other posts – do what makes you and Annmarie happy.

Thanks for the info around the blood test and iron. Interesting information about cholesterol – I’m going to double check my results now too. My Dr. determined that the results show that I might be insuline resistant – trying to do research to determine how to deal with that.

    Kevin –

OK. This is weird. I started watching the video and my first thought was, “Wow. That beard is really working for him!”… and then I looked down and saw the question of the day. LOL!

    Too funny.

So long as it does not get too out of control the beard looks great on you Kev. But so many varying opinions here I don’t think we’re going to be of much help :-)

I was just thinking how much you look cooler with little longer hair and a beard. Do not give your hairs away!!! ;-)

I think hair should be as natural as possible…trends will always change, the beard and curls look very organic and healthy…do what feels right to you at this time. (personally I love beards and longer hair-it is more cuddley and soft) :)

    Dear Kevin
I suggest you a very short hair and no beard, because u look like a cat with this hair colour you have. And why not give a transformation in your teet too, with a orthodontic specialist? Im sure you will play with it for a long time.
    best wishes

I agree with everyone who said it’s up to you & Annmarie what to do with your hair. But it would look better cleaned up a little maybe not so much of it. Like Ann Marie said a little goatee would do the trick. Question Kevin, I have T3 trouble and because of it I can’t take D it gives me a headache which means I am not absorbing it. Any suggestions? Please I hope you see this one becaus if you can clear up the delima there would be other things I could do such as spirulina, kelp, they all give me a headache. HELP!!

I like the beard, I say keep the beard and hair if you like it. You both have so much joy and health, it would shine through no matter what you looked like. :) Plus, I’m all for breaking down negative facial hair stereotypes (if there are any), or any negative stereotypes for that matter. Just be YOU!
Thanks for all the great info you share with us every day, I love you guys!

thankyou, as always, for a great show. My opinion? grow both your curls and beard a bit longer -they are looking even better as they grow.

  96. Joan
    10:15 am on December 30th, 2009

After all those comments…what to do!?!??!?! I think you should do what makes you and AnnMarie happy…that is what matters the most. Personally, I prefer a clean shaven face on most men…very few exceptions, but that is my opinion. Facial hair ages most people, as it usually grays faster than the hair on the head, but what “look” are you going for – again, a personal decision.

Regarding blood tests, I was quite disappointed after my last physical that they didn’t do the whole screening – just cholesterol and blood count, which I get both readings each time I donate blood so already knew those numbers were OK.

I could sure tell the difference when I got away from my mostly raw over the holidays – if I had not taken baby carrots, there would have been nothing raw! Now back to the better way for me to eat, mostly raw including green smoothies every day – works for me! Have a Happy New Year!!!

    Kevin and Annmarie….
You two are as beautiful as the work you aredoing!

Health-(wholeness of mind, body, spirit) has been basically stolen from people. You two
(us,too!) are attempting to help people
rediscover and achieve it, as best we are able.

Modern day marketing…like consumer preference polls, is aimed at controlling and manipulating a certain group of people. The
    goal: profit,profit, profit…period! Large
companies achieve that very well through
    the use of this tool.

Your stated goal is far different..we appreciate that! Your appeal as a happy, vibrant couple is very powerful. People are drawn to that, and that example is the way
you are achieving that commendable goal.

Pure and simple, modern marketing techniques Like this instant comment forum
can easily and quickly divide out and separate an otherwise cohesive group.

The “mystique” you share and project as
two unified people is powerful and being
used for a good purpose. Marketing and
engineering that can be like shooting yourself in the foot:

    Either a careless action, resulting
    only in injury…

Or something that seemed like a great
idea at the time, but turned out
    less than hoped for!!

Health is an awesome concept! You two are
a wonderful part of it helping others to achieve it…a very personal, often very individual activity. And we believe your use of this media is helping many!
    Health Now For You!

    Kev,
I love the beard, but you look great without it, too (think Summer-time).
As far as curly hair goes: there’s a GREAT salon that specializes in curly hair. They’re called Devachan and they have three locations in NYC, but now have a satellite location in White Plains! (I’m a Westchester girl, so that’s great for me). They really understand how curls work…..cut your hair dry so they know what they’re doing. I’ve had my hair cut by Lois and Jackie…both excellent! (Not inexpensive, at all, but totally worth it)

A happy and blessed New Year to you and AnnMarie. Thanks for all that you do.

Opinion seems to be for the beard and locks. Besides warmth in NE US, it’s sounder ecologically. Have you seen Aubrey de Grey’s effusion? Take that, wimpy David Wolfe!
If you go to an (ant)arctic area, it’s probably best to shave and avoid frostbite; otherwise, grow for it! Primates are hairy, and shouldn’t pretend otherwise.
I try not to shave my legs and underarms, but I’m blonde…

The beard is a bit out of control for me. I don’t like it when it starts growing down the neck. I vote for trim the beard or go straight to the goatee. Love the curls. What does Annmarie think?

    Happy New Year!

Stay as warm as you can – Keep the beard! As for those golden locks? I know so many people who would LOVE to have them!

Bottom line is, do what YOU want, as it is YOUR face and YOUR head. I will trust you either way, and if you say something that sounds “off”, I will investigate it myself. If you were an IBM executive or something, I’d say shave and a haircut. But with your lifestyle, you get to be the beautiful person you truly are, and not have to worry about what others think!

A Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous 2010 to ALL!

Changing hair (facial or otherwise) is nice when the seasons change. Maybe leave the beard until spring.

Since you are close to NYC, there’s a salon that caters to curly hair called Devachan. Lorraine Massey of this salon also has a great book about curly hair called Curly Girl – the info still applies girl of guy. Love the curls!

    Hi Kevin and Annemarie!
Thanks so much for this video. I had actually gone thru your archives a few days ago because I think I may have anemia, although I have several bad health conditions that seem to be unwilling to get resolved ie weight (100+) open-heart surgery 8 years ago- asthma/bronchitis- high blood pressure. My MD said it was as if i had a loaded gun to my head waiting to go off. I have taken many steps to improve my life- I obviously need many more. One slow to sink in is excercise. I have a crack in my 5th lumbar so alot of things cause spasms in my hip and leg. Anyway I know that I will come up with the RIGHT plan for me- what I’ve done for 55 years was not it. Sorry for such a long
e-mail, but I sense you care for your subscribers sincerely and will do everything you can to help.

I like the goatee a little more than the beard, but in the cold weather maybe the beard is a little warmer. My husband likes a beard because not much hair on his head -ha ha
I say show as much of that young face as long as you can.

Finally to keep your curls, cutting with razor is best- scissors seem to make the curls a little straighter.

Happy New Year and keep up your passionate work!
    Christy

You have great hair. Honestly, I would like to see it longer. Also I am a fan of facial hair, so if you are inclined to do anything about your facial hair, just trim your beard or at least leave something there. I also like red-headed men…but that wasn’t part of the question. Anyway, I have my boyfriend for that. I hope you all have a SAFE and HAPPY new year…Diana

Love the curls..beard looks closer to nature..have to keep the “renegade” look..Not crazy about beards that grow down the throat unless it’s full out mountain man. Goatee might be cute as well..Up to you two…Much success in the New Year!

I like you both ways. The beard is a great winter look for you, no beard in summer. I’ve never been crazy about goat-Ts however.

I love the curls too buddy so if you get your haircut, I vote to keep most of the curl.:)

In the end, do what you like of course.

    hi Kevin
see all the answers, keep the beard, cut the beard, hair short, long, everyone has images so does it matter how you look? people are going to judge you no matter what, hilarious, i feel you are the one to decide and it is so not important, it is not who you are, it is just a play.

I think a neatly trimmed goatee would suit you the best, but that’s my preference. As for cutting curly hair, start with a good pair of scissors and a hair apron from a hair supply place, and a comb and a spray bottle of water. Have Annmarie wet your hair, comb your hair, section it off (down the middle, then in rows from the middle out–kind of like you are scoring dehydrated crackers after turning them–then pick up one section near the middle part, determine how short you want to cut it (start with cutting off an inch or an inch and a half to leave room for a barber to repair it if needed!) then work outward toward the ear, picking up about a 1.5 x 1.5 inch (cracker sized)”square” of hair, cutting and blending in the next section to be the same length. I first learned to cut hair when I worked at the School for the Blind and nobody ever complained about how their hair looked…(humorous but true) Since then, I have cut my husband’s, my son’s, the elders from our church, and whoever else stopped by and needed a haircut. I sometimes cut my own hair as well!

No, Kevin, do NOT cut your hair, PLEASE!
If you’ll keep growing it you’ll get the SEXIEST MAN award in the next BEST Of Raw event. Your bear looks absolutely gorgeous too, just keep it like it is (no lower in length). Goat’s style beards look silly, yours right now is beautiful!
I personally think that your hear length should be at your waist line. It will be marvelous. Please, please, please, keep growing your hair!!!

What is the reason of a high Homocystine level if you are raw for 90%? Mine as up to 17 wich is way to high.

In addition to leafy greens, I get my iron from beans like lentils & chickpeas, and nuts.

I prefer clean shaven, but maybe you could have a beard in the winter.

  133. Veronika
    12:19 am on January 6th, 2010

Oh! And hemp seeds and dried hunza mulberries are awesome sources of iron. The Hunza region has soil that is super mineral-rich, so any dried fruit from there is good.

  134. Michelle

Don’t overlook sea veggies. Dulse is an enormous source of iron.

  135. Karin
    8:32 pm on January 8th, 2010

Yes, keep the beard but shave it down a little on the cheeks so you have about an inch and a half to two inches all along the jawline, keeping it connected to the side burns and shave under the chin…that will clean it up just right!

  136. Liz
    5:50 pm on January 23rd, 2010

Here, here for Devachan Salon. I would love to be able to get my hair cut there! The main thing though, is to find someone who understands that not all curls are created equal. Some are tighter, some are looser. I’ve read that curly hair needs to be sculpted rather than cut as it normally is to make allowance for the different curl patterns which makes total sense to me. Otherwise it looks scraggly, especially as it grows out – personal experience speaking. Oh, and the other poster was right. Cleanse as normal & let it air dry. Then cut it. The Curly Girl book mentioned by someone else has pictures showing the best way to cut curls.
