You all asked for my opinion on algae, meat and mushrooms…

So today, I cover some counterpoints to Dr. Robert Young’s thoughts. This does not really mean either of us is right or wrong. It just means there is always two sides to a story.

I know it might drive some of you nuts, but the reality is you have to make your own decisions about what works for you want what doesn’t.

That’s what this show is all about!

Take a look…

Your question of the day: What stresses out you the most?

I am sure my husband feels your pain also being a Steeler’s fan…I personally do not care!!

What stresses me out is trying to make sure of what is really the best direction for me to go with relation to nutrition. Everyone thinks they are right and promoting truth!! and I have yet to form my own opinion for myself. I have tried so many different things and have struggled to eliminate the worst offenders from my diet with minimal benefits, so am left wondering if the food is the complete answer? Or perhaps the environmental considerations are more the thing. I agree about the meat industry comments…it IS horrendous…I feel so bad for the stress inflicted on those poor animals.

commenting on today’s topic…I’ve seen some pretty unhealthy vegetarians too. I eat mostly organic and that includes meat. I follow the Metabolic Typing way of eating. I do some dehydrating and eat some raw…bottom line is that a varied diet of whole healthy foods works for me. I also make my own cheese from raw milk and eat locally farmed free range eggs. I’m happy!!!

Good show!!! I agree we need to experiment by cutting or adding something to see how effect it may or may not be. The meat produced here is America is not worth eating with all the hormones, antibiotics and etc. Wouldn’t consider eating meat. Thanks for the the daily information.

I sure don’t stress out over the Steelers, or any other sport LOL!!! I do agree with you that we need to do what works best for us. What works for me may not necessarily work for my husband, so we make our choices accordingly. Some things, like eating flesh foods, I won’t compromise on at all – it is my choice. Other choices I made years ago are changing with the new information I have been learning in recent months – and a change for the better, I am happy to say. I think that whatever we do, the more simple we can keep things, the more doable it will be in the long run. I do believe that the more fresh fruits & veggies we can consume each day, the better. It is a one day at a time project! Have a great weekend!

Mushrooms are very valuable plants and if used right can be a very valuable component of any health program. Dr. Young had some good information but totally missed on the mushrooms.

If you really want to reduce your stress throw out your Orioles shirt. The Steelers are winners going through a down cycle but will rise again. The Orioles may never make it.

I get stressed out every time I get a cold! I’m a raw foodist, juice every kind of green, take probiotics, angstrom minerals, eat chlorella and spirulina, soak my nuts, crack open coconuts, get plenty of moderate exercise, etc. etc. I’m on my 3rd cold this winter – why? I so want to be one of those raw foodist that claim they haven’t had a cold in 15 years!! Every time my meat eating, dairy drinking, wonder bread friends stay healthy I get so pissed – hahaha. Whose got the secret :) ?

Definitely driving in Albuquerque, the people are just horrible drivers here…..lots of stress on the road, I used to have a pretty bad case of road rage on occasion but the better I eat and exercise, the better I just let it slip off my shoulders.

Good show Kevin, good advice once again……

I would really like for you to do a show on Dr. Simoncini from Italy who developed the sodium bicarbonate treatment for cancers….

I also highly recommend you look into the work of Jay Guitterrez from nighthawkminerals.com He uses radiation hormesis to treat tumors and cancers, basically eradicating our fungal loads that have shown to be a pivotal point of developing cancers in the first place. He uses very low radiation stones, so utilizing natural gamma, beta, and alpha energies from the earth, which highly stimulate our immune system to deal with the trash in the body. There is a long history behind it, our country used it in the early 1900’s for years as a therapy until it was abused, and then well….Hiroshima and Nagasaki ruined it all. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE check into this…. He is out of Pritchett, Colorado.

      thanks so much!!!

The thing that stresses me out the most is when people put there problems on everybody around them, and don’t take responsibility for there choices.

Kevin I wish you would of addressed what he said about probiotics.Don’t we need to keep a healthy balance of micro flora to keep harmful bacteria, and things like Candida at bay,or is that just for people who’s body is in a state of acidosis and eat to many processed sugars.

Good show Kevin! I agree about the slaughterhouses and glass wall analogy- I may fall off the raw wagon here and there but all cravings for meat are gone thanks to what I’ve learned (and periodical visits to Farm Sancturay). What stresses me out? My job and this economical climate.

Kristin, about catching colds, I learned years ago that you should never put an unclean finger in your eye. It’s a sure way of catching a cold and I actually read that Brigitte Mars (the herbalist) mention this as well. Works for me!

What stresses me the most is trying to get more raw foods (or even healthier cooked food options) into my diet in a household where only tons of meat, white rice, white potatoes, white flour, white sugar and canned vegetables are considered food. Raw foods make me feel and function so much better. Now, I have a question. I’ve tried raw food recipes with Portobelo mushrooms, but I’ve seen many times that mushrooms should always be cooked. What can you tell us about cooking or eating them raw?

What stresses me out most is having fibromyalgia, and the only way the medical profession wants to treat it is with drugs. I see an accupuncturist once a week, (it’s expensive) and a chiropractor about twice a month, they help some, but not enough to where I can workout. It also stresses me out when I can’t quite eating sweets…. permanently. I can quit for a while, but I always start up again, SOOOO depressing.

I agree with Quinny and the 80-10-10 program by Doug Graham. I did his program ‘by the book’ for 60 days and lost 18 pounds in the first 3 weeks! I felt on top of the world – better than I ever had in my 50+ years!! Incredible! But then, somehow I got off track and back on coffee, and now I am working my way back up! Greatest stressor for me is promising myself I will get off caffeine, but then drinking it every morning – then I mess up on my good eating habits and fall into depression! Help, anyone?! I am doing some Green Supplements, at present. God bless you, Kevin – you are awesome!

hehehe I was about to go on a profound and long winded explanation of what stresses me out, then I remembered the short-hand version: FILLING IN FORMS!!!! Forms/applications/questionnaires/surveys they are my Achilles’ heel! I freak out because how can you fit ‘essence of human being’ into neat tick boxes or 20 words or whatever, aaahhhhh. I still haven’t grasped on an emotional level that ‘form’ does not equal human being (ie me).
Apart from that it is whenever I slip into my old paradigm of thinking/being/living, I used to be pretty messed up and it is a long journey from there…but these days I LOVE the journey:-)

Great video! I stress out the most in traffic.

I have seen taking meat away from your diet and seeing amazing health benefits as well. I have also seen vegetarians start eating meat with similarly miraculous health boosts. I think Dr. Young’s position is just like machine gunning down everything blindfolded.

And of course, the meat only being slaughtered in the way you describe, there are no excuses for the other.

“find a local farmer who is killing his meat, right there on his property.” No one kills meat, they kill a sentient being. Also, in terms of sustainability, flesh based agriculture even local, is no longer “sustainable.” Whether the animal is raised to be “happy meat” or confined in a concentration camp, the outcome is the same -Murder.

Did you not say that algae is acidifying to the body? I’ve always read that it has an alkalizing effect on the body. If that is what you meant, could you point me to your source? as I don’t yet know much about algae

Another problem with eating meat, is that people nowadays pretty much only eat the muscle meat, not the organs or bones, where much of the nutrition is stored.

Dr. Andrew Weil & Dr. Gabriel Cousens both say that the medicinal mushrooms (cordyceps, etc.) are okay/beneficial because they are hot water extracted & the dangerous stuff is killed through this process, but that people shouldn’t eat fresh/raw mushrooms because of the mycotoxin-causing potential.

your guest presentations that are thought provoking like Dr.(what exactly are his credentials?) Youngs’ I do welcome. I stand by my Chinese Herbs and Tonic Alchemy [Green Food] which are based on longevity and adaptogenic tonic herbs as well as Reishi (Duanwood & Wild), Agaricus, Maitake and Cordyceps (Mongolia,Western China and Tibet).
I’ve been securing my products for the last 20 years from the Bio Chemist Ron Teeguarden and his wife Yanlin. He owns and operates ‘Dragon Herbs’ in CA. and I’ve not found a more trust worthy individual in all of the Healing Arts.
I must say I agree with some of what Mr. Young had to say, of course, yet I do believe that it is a highly individualized journey each of us experiencing and being closed minded (dogmatic?) is not beneficial to anyone. On that note I want to say that I appreciate you Kevin and AnnMarie for your open minded approach to the Healing Arts. It’s exciting to see how you are open to learning and sharing with all of us. Thank you,

      Hi Kevin and Annmarie,

If you guys could bring more awareness to the downside of slaughter houses and the animal practices, I think if could be eye opening. The cowboy Howard Lyman that you did an interview a few weeks ago was so informative on what the animals are fed (which is not what is best for the animal or for people to consume) and it would be enlightening as your show continues to reach more people out there. There is so much on the subject to share why a whole foods diet is so much healthier.

      Thank you for your work.

“Two heads a day.” I was just wondering “what raw staples does kevin have, every day?” Thanks for answering.

I used to stress out when I saw Kevin and the other healthprenuers going to raw retreats, introducing new products, making money and generally enjoying themselves. I would get very jealous and then the angry self loathing would flare up: “DO SOMETHING WITH YOUR LIFE, YOU LOSER! DO SOMETHING!”

Doing the work, tapping and pivoting has helped a lot with this. When “it” flares back up, I leave the computer and start tapping, or breathing or do a pivot (visualize the opposite of what is unwanted). Then I’ll re-visit the thought later to see if there’s any comedy in it (I do standup).

      Dear readers,
I just want to comment on the mushroom, algae and meat is it really so bad for you? I attended a full seminar for one day with Dr. Young and his teaching are very interesting. I’m a therapist myself and specialized in Traditional Chinese Medicine, known as TCM. In all my studies of TCM specific mushrooms have been successfully used to treat diseases. When you look in history of TCM human bodies were not as toxic as today! The medicinal mushrooms are very different from what we eat today like portobello, champignon and reishi you can buy in the supermarket. In the state of PA I visited a mushroom farm and the smell was very disturbing. Just like our meat we also have mushroom meat markets…Same thing with Reishi. In most stores the reishi is very sad looking. A good reishi looks very different from the ones in the stores! They look very white and have a healthy roof! Medicine and finding the perfect food is challenging in an environment like we live in. Some people’s bodies got so toxic that a medicinal mushroom might get confused..who knows! Never in history -that we know off- we’ve seen such a toxic population. Some of my clients have chemical bodies that certain mushrooms like the ones you buy in the store I would not suggest.
Just buy your mushrooms wild crafted, organic and local.
Meat is absolute poison in a toxic or acidic body. Our bodies are adapting over time and we can eat a lot of different foods to keep us healthy. We have a challenge with our environment and it’s important we all can see the bigger picture of our population, planet and food. The real problem we deal with is not really our food it’s education. Thank you Kevin and Annmarie for all the online education you share with us!

I lost my Sonics to OKC Kevin which was really stressful, but at least u still have a team to root for no matter how bad they suck ( ha ha just kidding there), & don’t forget about that superbowl gift against the Seahawks a few years ago as well.

Anyway, one thing I’ve noticed recently is people using the idea that so, and so lived to 80, or 90 and they ate anything, and everything as if this is some sort of proof that their approach is ok, and this other guy warning against that must be wrong, or even crazy. My thing is this, who’s to say that had so, and so ate healthier they wouldn’t have lived even longer???

So, grandpa Smith smoked and he died at 92. Ok, maybe if he didn’t smoke he could have lived to 102! Maybe he was active, or a hard worker, or had great quality water, and/or air in his youth which helped give him a strong foundation in health. Many of our elders had that, & many of us don’t, but who’s to say that an improvement from the dietary angle wouldn’t have helped grandpa Smith live longer. Also, it’s not always about quantity ( of years ), what about quality ( of life ) ? That’s another angle to consider.

Finally, people need to figure out what they’re trying to achieve in regards to health as that can help you decide which direction you might want to take in regards to this raw/natural foods diet. That’s just what I see, but to each his own…

#31 Nicole, you should listen to David wolfe’s free info on “Beauty thru mineralization”. It covers healthy hair minerals.
#13 Stormy, our local mushroom man, Alan Muskat, says that mushrooms should be cooked to break the cell wall and make them digestable. Local phytochemistry teacher says adaptogenic plants and mushrooms should be cooked in some water to release the polysaccharides. David wolfe says don’t eat the portabellas, contaminated with fungus, the bad kinds. You decide.

We do most of the recommendations. We grow our own wheatgrass and I am actually drinking it myself. A couple of months ago I would not have dreamed about this. I need to grow more sprouts. A couple of weeks ago I harvested a beautiful batch of sunflower greens and they were DELICIOUS!!!. My salads looked like those of Nomi Shannon. The whole Hippocrates program requires a lot of planning and commitment but the results are worth it. I’m curious but not stressed where it is leading to;what we will keep and what will be left out eventually. I always juiced even before I knew that there was a “raw food movement” so I know that I will be doing that for the rest of my life. I introduced my daughter to juices when she was very young and here we get at the topic that you touched yesterday so nicely. If I only knew then what I know now I would have nursed longer. It was one of the best experiences of my life!! It is hard to describe it but it is so wonderful! The smell of the baby and there is a certain rhythm to it. Yes, you have to do it in the middle of the night but it is so worth it. (I did it for 13 months but towards the end there was hardly anything to feed). I fully nursed until 7 months and then introduced solids very slowly. One teaspoon at a time. Yes, I bought some baby food once in a while but only when we traveled. Annemarie, I don’t know if you own a hand blender;if not get one. It was the best gadget to make baby food. At the time I did not know about raw food what I know now but I do know that I fed my child properly because she is a good eater now and tells me all the time how “crappy” the food is that kids eat at school. Her favorite juice is “pink juice” which is beets, apple, celery and carrot. I wished I had known about the green smoothies but then I think that at the time even Victoria Boutenko hadn’t discovered or was about to discover them. I still want to comment on the interview with Dr. Young. I wonder where he got his opinion about mushrooms from. One of my friends in France recently took a tour with somebody who knows everything about eatable and non-eatable mushrooms. She told me that the eatable ones tasted fantastic. I remember as a child that we knew a gentleman who knew everything about wild mushrooms and he was so in tune with nature. I did not like Dr. Young’s attitude (“get off your ….etc) and I still wonder why you haven’t interviewed Brian Clement yet. I know, i keep whining about it but he is definitely an authority in the raw and living foods community. Another person I suggest you consider is Ann-Louise Gittleman. She is not a raw foodie but when I read the comments of the renegade health people I think that she definately could give some sound advice.

Great show, again. I tried about five years ago to follow Dr Young’s diet and wasnt’ able to stay with it and work full time. It was so strict but I did learn a lot about nutrition. Kevin, your approach has helped me now to continue to work toward optimum health by simply starting with a green smoothie for breakfast. Then keep making gradual changes and choices. It’s do-able even on a busy schedule and it’s at least something. Thank you.

What stesses me out is money. How to afford to buy organic foods, all the seminars, super foods, zappers, medicinal herbs and all the constant emails from everyone in the industry offering books, tapes, gadgets and seminars one would like to have or participate in. Man…I want to do it all but the money tree can’t keep the pace. Oh…the pressure! By the way, thanks for this free website!

meat, algae, mushrooms …. you’re right, there are two sides to those stories. but there are NOT two sides to refined sugars and processed starches. just my opinion, but …. someone could try eliminating THEM completely, first, and then reassess.

i have a friend who has been vegetarian for almost her entire life, but still ate SMALL amounts of dairy. however, she eats refined sugars and processed starches, and she smokes cigarettes. she is extremely obese, and i can see from her skin and her eyes that she is very unhealthy. she also gets sick often.

i feel for kristen who says she is doing everything that sounds right, and is on her third cold of the season. i think she may have some latent toxicity issues that haven’t been addressed. maybe she would like to investigate a full-length juice feast, with all the recommended accoutrements – especially regular colonic irrigation – and see if that doesn’t clear up the issues.

you’re right about the meat industry. i grew up in a rural environment, and i could tell you some horror stories.

what stresses me out? emails in my inbox that i don’t want. i changed my address recently but still got on one list when i bought a book, and this person will sometimes send me three or four emails every day – some of them inevitably seem to get sent twice, and that makes five or six in one day – and it drives me CRAZY!!!!! i really hate that. i don’t want to stop getting communications from this person, but don’t want all these emails.

Regarding Kristen who has had 3 colds this winter:

How is your vitamin D level? Do you take vitamin D, or get out in the sun every day?

If your level is low, I suggest taking 5,000 units of vitamin D-3 (the active form) per day for a few weeks, then 2,000 units per day after that.

Vitamin D is the most important vitamin for good immune function. People get colds during the winter because they are not getting enough sun on their skin.

Also, you need the UV-B rays to make vitamin D, and these rays are only strong in the middle of the day, between 10 AM and 2 PM. They are the same rays that can cause sunburn if you stay out too long, so be careful.

If you get a reasonably warm winter day, go outside in your bathing suit at noon for about 20 minutes. Your neighbors may think you’re crazy, but you will be healthier.

You can sunbathe even on a cool day, around 50 degrees, as long as you are sheltered from the wind. The sun on your skin will keep you warm even if the air is cool.

I take 2,000 units of vitamin D a day, as well as get in the sun often, and I don’t get colds.

      Good luck.

      Michael T.

Number 1 is my diabetes. I have been diabetic now (in the next few days) for 12 years. I’m stressing about this synthetic insulin that I have to take because I haven’t found any reliable alternative. This insulin makes me tired, it causes me to gain weight if I’m not careful, and I’m pretty sure it’s doing damage to my body. On top of that, if I don’t keep my blood sugars in control, I could end up with kidney failure and nerve damage that can cause me to go blind or even lose limbs. I’ve been searching and searching for something that I can use aside from this “insulin” but without success.

Very well thought out. Loved what you said about being involved in the process of your food. I completely agree. If you actually saw what these poor animals go through, you would never eat them again. I actually have.

There is so much information out there, much of it conflicting. The important thing to remember is everyone’s bodies are different too. What works for me might not work for you. But what is important is that we are aware and present for our decisions.

Dr. Young, who seemed to me to be rather arrogant and highly opinionated (and didn’t look particularly healthy to me either), made many unsubstantiated, vague and unhelpful statements about the complicated issue of body chemistry. He was mostly talking about the alkalinity of food but it wasn’t clear to me if his negative opinion of meat, algae and mushrooms were because these foods are acid-forming for the body, or for some other reason. Kevin didn’t address this in his “rebuttal” either, so I still don’t know.

What stresses me out is having so much conflicting information about diet and health that I don’t know anymore what to eat, drink or take in the way of supplements!

hello, to christie bolton, #55. are you aware of the documentary film “simply raw”? dr gabriel cousens and his team gathered six diabetic people, types one and two, from around the country, and they were specifically chosen because they knew nothing about healthy eating. they gathered at the tree of life in patagonia, az, and ate a completely raw and healthy diet, meditated, exercised, and learned a lot. the five of the six who stayed all had major breakthroughs. all the type 2’s got off all insulin, and most other drugs. one of the type one’s also got off all insulin. the other reduced his intake from 70 to 5, and he was not adhering 100% to the program. it’s very inspiring, and might help you. i empathize a lot with diabetes. my father’s father died from complications of it, my father has it, and i was clearly headed down that road as a teenager, but thankfully i moved away from family and began eating far better (at that time it was simple economics, the reasons came later). so i thankfully no longer have any issues with it. so check out that video, and maybe contact dr gabriel cousens. he also has books out, one of which is called “there is a cure for diabetes”. good luck.

as for what stresses me out, one of the big things is when i see a very dear friend, who is stuck in a nursing home because he has a crappy family who wants to control him, and because his family and the nursing home all believe he must eat meat, so he is deteriorating, with diabetes (type 2) and parkinson’s. very challenging to see him be so frustrated, and see him getting more and more depressed and hopeless, and seeing no way out. and he gets heavier and heavier, and i have more and more challenge taking care of him. and it frustrates the you know what out of me that he is stuck there because of a lousy law system where only the rich get lawyers. we went to court to give him a life, and the lawyer was a last minute replacement who didn’t even show up, and was just a voice on the phone saying “yes judge, i can hear you”. quite the defense. well, it’s alot of long stories, but you asked what stresses me out, and the nursing home systems, the law systems, the money systems, the food abominations all stress me out. and if anyone wants to offer pro bono legal services to help a very worthy person get out of that particular form of jail, i would love to hear from you. thanks for caring and peace for ALL life!

I get stressed out when I have more challenges than I have time & or money to deal with. During those times I have felt alone thinking that the buck stops here so what is my next plan or option….that stresses me out as I go about a 100 miles an hour & I do become tired.

In stillness or during venting to a caring ear I reconfirm that I am not alone. I have much gratitude for all that is in my life.

What used to stress me out was not having a support system of like-minded people, but the world is changing! This website is fantastic, and healthy lifestyles are becoming so chic! Take Alicia Silverstone’s new book and website The Kind Diet and The Kind Life, respectfully. There is a mainstream market who is buying in fast! Also, a fantastic book called ‘Skinny Bitch’ promotes real vegan food and some raw, with a powerful anti-crap food message. I recommend these books to the smart folks in my life, and they are agreeing with the message!
I have been vegetarian and then vegan for over 12 years, and at one time my friends and family thought I was some crazy hippie child, and now they come to me excited to share their new similar beliefs!
I’m also delighted to see the The China Study IS making an impact in the world. I read it last year, was astounded by what I read, then stood back in bewilderment as the world seemed to reject the book! I googled it at the time and could not find any commentary from the public, and even posted a Yahoo Ask to see if anyone had read or heard about the book. No one! So I am so happy and relieved to hear you guys talk about it.

      Hi Kevin and Annmarie,

Kevin, you seem like such a sweety. I have just recently tuned into your show after I downloaded your ebook (from Lucas at Yoga Body). Thank you for sharing your views, resources and knowledge with us.

I enjoyed this video, much more open minded and reasonable than Dr Young. I’ve been following his stuff with interest for about a year but after seeing him interviewed on your show, I am completely off him. He comes across rude, judgemental, alarmist and over generalising.

Anyway my experience with health is that you have to trust your own body. You can read a lot of things and start to believe they are true and then force yourself to follow the advice of other people, even though your body is screaming out for something different.

I was a vegan and it did not work for me. Prior to that I was vegetarian for over 10 years. I had no energy and became very ill. I was lacking in protein because I had been told over and over again by the vegetarian movement that you do not need to worry about protein. Ever since I changed my diet and made protein a priority, I feel 100 times better and rarely get sick. I developed hypoglycemia while I was vegan (low blood sugar problems) and protein alleviates this condition.

I have eliminated all sugars from my diet (including honey and agave – which in terms of calories and effect on your blood sugar levels – are exactly the same as processed sugar as far as your body is concerned), I eat protein at every meal and snack (I try and eat vegetable protein but I find it does not stabilise my blood sugars the way animal protein does. I eat stacks of eggs (at least two per day)), I also eat a green smoothie most days which consists of ½ a head of greens and low GI fruits. I limit fruits because they are too high in sugars. I eat probably one a day.

So now I eat as many fresh whole foods as possible but I also eat as much protein as possible (and few grains). I find this works for me. If I try and just eat vegan foods, I feel very ill (my blood sugar just fluctuates too much).

If you’d told me a few years ago I would go back to eating meat I would not have believed you! But my health is about 100 times better since I quit veganism. I’ve also lost weight and have more energy to exercise. I eat mostly fish and chicken, eggs and raw milk for protein.

      Do what works for you!

Oh I also tested my pH for the first time this morning and it was 9 (alkaline). Not sure what that means as I haven’t eaten any greens the past couple of days (holiday season) and I ate a lot of eggs yesterday.

Note to Joan: Set up an email filter so the emails go into a folder and bypass your inbox.

Note to Kristen: I sympathise with you. When I was vegan and following all the advice to the letter and feeling like death warmed up, I felt so frustrated when all my meat eating friends were so much healthier than me! Try increasing your protein intake! Eat a free range organic egg and then see how you feel afterwards. I’ll never forget my first egg after being vegan for a few years. I felt full for the first time in years! See what your body feels like though for yourself. I also agree with Michael T. Vitamin D is a major factor in your immune system. Also hand washing is important (wash your hands throughout the day after you touch anything anyone else has touched).

PS Climate change stresses me out.
