After yesterday’s post, a few people wrote asking, “How do I know if my supplements are working?”

It’s a great question and I’m going to address that today. :-)

It would be a waste of time and money if you were taking things like shilajit all the time and it wasn’t working for you. In this episode, I’ll explain how you can figure out if your supplements are working and have a little peace of mind.

Take a look…

Your question of the day: When was the last time you took a medical or nutritional test?

Click here, scroll down to the bottom of the page and leave your comments now!

If you want to try Shilajit, here’s where you can go… Click Here to Get Shilajit from the Renegade Health Store

I am a Holistic Health Coach. I use applied kinesiology in my practice, which of course I also use for myself. So the last time I had a test of that kind was about 15 minutes ago! :D As far as testing on a machine, I had a cardiovascular scan done in May or June of this year, which showed that I had absolutely none of whatever marker they looked for (which almost everyone has on some level) and the man doing the test said since I don’t have that marker, my cardiovascular system is like it would be for a person 10+ years younger than my age. That told me something is working. :)

I get a full blood chemistry panel done every year or two. It serves three purposes: (1)It tells me if there’s any health problem brewing that would be reflected in blood tests (i.e., liver function, anemia, heart issues, etc.) (2) It establishes a “baseline” so that if one of the tests were to be abnormal, I could compare it to previous tests. That gives doctors much more information, in most cases, as to what the abnormal finding means. (3) It encourages me to continue making healthy choices, because I can see how good my results are and that is TANGIBLE proof that good health habits pay off.

Thanks for this explanation about using tests. Do you have a website recommendation that explains different types and their purposes? I fasted at True North and was asked to take several tests. One measured Vit D, and I was low. I’ve haven’t been retested since then, however, their MD and my regular MD gave me different prescriptions for improving the condition. Mark Hyman MD suggests megadoses of D3.

I get my vitamins and minerals tested every year through my internal medicine doctor via blood testing. The last one was just completed last month. I also just completed a hair analysis for the first time ever. I’ve never really been low in any vitamins or minerals exept Vit D. I’m now taking 3000 IU’s daily and am planning to increase to 5000 over the next week per Dr. Meyer Esenstein’s recommendations (http://homefirst.com/info-1/current-health-news/vitamin-d3.html.) He thinks we can take up to 10,000 IU per day but I’m under 100 lbs so I’m going with the pediatric dosage. He also believes that Vit D is protective against H1N1. What do you know about this?

    Dearest Kevin,

Thank you very much for your sharing so openly about why you promote products you believe can help people who watch your show.
I didn’t know about how you lost your dad to cancer, when you were so young. My heart goes out to you. I can see how this would impassion your Renegade Health Mission.
Personally, I have always felt you promote items from a place of integrity , and that your positive recommendations are absolutely genuine. That is one of the many reasons that I am a fan of the show.
I just want to really thank you for always sharing your true experiences and feelings about various things. You are appeciated by so many.

Many blessings to you and lovely Annmarie.

I just received Annmarie’s coconut skin oil. Yum!

Peace and Love to you both!
Hope to meet you in Massachusetts someday!

Funny you should mention testing! I JUST had some blood drawn by Kaiser yesterday (my HMO) for a comprehensive panel of tests and the results looked great! I was thrilled to see my blood ph at 8.0 and everything else looked fab also. Cholesterol 147 (I was expecting even lower but maybe it will be the next time I’m tested). It was good to get some confirmation about how my body’s doing. Next I’d love to check the level of heavy metals in my blood.

Hey Kevin, that was really moving, I’ve never heard you share that about your Dad (and I’ve watched a lot of shows!!!). Thanks for your amazing honesty:-)
As for tests I had some bloodwork done in spring by my regular doctor. I am considering blowing out my savings on going to a proper clinic because what is the point of savings if you are not healthy?!! So, that would give me a lot of insight as somewhere such as Hippocrates do tonnes of testing right?! Many thanks as always for being you and doing an amazing job!!!!
Ps is the beard to keep you warm because it is winter?!

Besides the routine Cholesterol tests which r always good 4 me and the b12 has not been a problem especially since most of my diet is raw and all vegan. Many vegans and vegetarians have b12 deficiency because cooking destroys most of the b12. The new blood test I am taking tomorrow is a 25(OH)D, also called 25-hydroxyvitamin D. I have been reading about the importance of Vitamin D levels to prevent colds and a whole list of benefits like like your risk of developing serious diseases like diabetes and cancer is reduced 50% – 80% through simple, sensible exposure to natural sunlight 2-3 times each week. Mike adams has a good artical on vitamin D
    http://www.naturalnews.com/003069.html
    and so does Dr mercola
    http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2008/12/27/important-vitamin-d-update.aspx

I try to get exposure to the sun as much as possible but it is difficult in the winter in NY. I am trying to find studies on how long vitamin d is stored in our body.

I open a window @ work during lunch and soak up some of the rays when I retire I want to head closer to the equator that is where we should be living for optimal health and comfort:))

I’m extremely grateful that you do have products to recommend and also make available through your website. I attend the Natural Products Expo East each year and the array of products is staggering. Your sage advice is accurate and definitely will help people make wise choices. It only makes sense that you would offer choice products as an adjunct to all the quality information you gift people with.

As for testing I’ve had the Western blot blood test to detect Lyme Disease (this is the most accurate test). It is a massive epidemic that is smoldering. If anyone wants to totally get the full picture about Lyme they should see the movie “Under Our Skin”. It is a heartbreaking documentary about the destroyed lives and the political wrangling going on both in the courtrooms and dr. offices today.

Important to note that Lyme is many times misdiagnosed as M.S. or Parkinsons, as well as ADHD in children. The best treatment is still to be determined – PREVENTION is critical.

    Hi Kevin,
Just this past month I had blood tests and other things to get a life insurance policy. I managed to get “Preferred Select” status. That is the best one! Everyone I dealt with in getting this policy seems to be amazed that I am 58 and don’t take any meds, don’t have high BP, don’t have diabetes, etc. Personally, I don’t think 58 is that old!! The guy selling the policy said that they hardly ever have anyone that qualifies for preferred select. I find that amazing. I think it did help that I come from a family where the women live long healthy lives, but still……

Thanks to both of you for all you do!

After years of miss diagnosis, I finally found a Dr. who loves alternatives but will use modern medicine if the shoe fits. Test showed systemic candida and my mercury was thru the roof. Changed my diet, did detox and flushes and had my silver fillings removed and following tests showed everything back to normal. Its great seeing the proof on paper as well as in how I was feeling.

Now if I could just get my iron levels to stay up my Dr. would be happy, any suggestions? I use tons of greens, tried beet powder, even iron supplements but could not tolerate them. All women that I know who have had their iron tested have tested low, maybe it’s just a female thing?

I just had an Organix Profile done and based on that I am getting special supplements to make up for the deficiencies. My regular doctor has a blood test done every three months but I hardly ever get any useful information based on that. You need to see a nutritionally experienced doctor. Most doctors know nothing about nutrition and the little they know is wrong.

I haven’t been tested for anything in years. I never get sick so I feel like there is no need to visit any doctor. Although nowadays I take a lot more supplements than I used to, I feel better now than I have in my entire life (I’m 60). I absolutely love that you and Mike Adams and Dr. Mercola recommend the best products. Most of us never knew about all this great stuff before. Once in awhile I wonder if I need to take all these supplements, but I feel so darn good that I hate to stop taking anything. I want you to keep recommending all that great stuff and really appreciate that you do so.

There is also another way to determine if certain supplements are working. That is to have a “live” blood sample looked at under a microscope. You don’t need an MD for this, just a certified microscopist. Much cheaper, very revealing.

I would like to say I am really grateful for all the tips and advice that you present on your show. Although I cannot buy your food products on line as I live in Oz I have researched the products you recommend and where possible found the equivalent here. I have been raw for about 2 months and have followed your advice and links to other websites where there is countless really useful info. I have full blood screen yearly and see both MD and ND for healthcare. I understand more fully the implications on my health of the results and in line with my health professionals take appropriate action – however until coming across your show and others like it I never really understood much before. I have been vegetarian for many years but until I really understood and physically felt the effects of correct alkaline acid balance and raw living, most of the info before didn’t sink in. Thanks for sharing so much and both your and Ann Marie’s passion

    Hey…

I’m getting my baseline tests done soon and just starting raw so I want to see where I’m at.

I asked for the tests that you recommended in High Raw, my doc says there is no way to do a urine test for B12… so I have to get a blood test for it.. I’d like to see a naturopath because I’ll likely get better “service” but at the moment I can’t afford to. Anyway, the CRP has a cost attached and plus I have to pay for each and every heavy metal according to my doctor and I didn’t know which ones to test for. Also, he say that he couldn’t do a candida test for whatever reason.. but I’m getting all the rest done sometime next week..

great videos…thanks for all the great info

Thanks alot Kevin for lowering the price thats an amazing thing that you have done there!! Its been a tough year for alot of us since this “credit crunch” kicked in, where i couldnt afford before, will shortly buy the Gerson tapes off you now. I hope that you get a good quantative response at least for all the effort you have put in to presenting and to the Gerson Institute for providing this valuable knowledge.

    Kevin,

First of all, thank you for your positive energies and sharing them via the internet.

I have two questions for you:
    1. When you were low on minerals, did you physically feel as though something was not right with your physical or mental state?

    2. Where can you get a “hair mineral” test? I live near Chicago.

    Thanks,

    Jacque

    Hi Guys,

Love your show, especially the ones where you explain how or why something is. It is nice to get a definitive answer from time-to-time.

I have a question if you have the time.
My question is will my flax seeds go rancid as rancid oil will do me more harm than good.

On Saturday I juice a mega load of juice containing a wide range of fruit and vegetables, I then blend dark brown flax seeds (dry) and add to the mix along with blended banana and avocado.
Once mixed together I then pour into about 50 small plastic cups and freeze.
On just before i go to bed from sun-thur I remove 8 cups, place on a tray and cover.
In the morning they are still cold and I have 4 for breakfast and pour 4 in to a thermo flask which I take to work and have for lunch. (juice is still cool at lunch time)

My question is will my flax seeds go rancid as rancid oil will do me more harm than good.

    Regards
    Mark

I took the Vitamin-Mineral-Amino Acid (“VMA”) urine mail-in test through Bob McCauley’s Watershed – revealed low levels of lots of all three – have taken a few B12 tests – I’m fine there. Took a Vitamin D test – I’m totally deficient – something like 15-whatever – supposed to be at least 40-whatever – bought both some MegaFoods D3 horsepills and some Quantum Research Labs liquid D3 syrum w olive oil base in an itty-bitty vial – cannot seem to verify whether either are vegan. I did a live blood cell analysis with a homeopath – heavy metals weren’t too bad, had a few parasites, and hormones were imbalanced. O-Ring Kinesiology testing revealed gall-bladder, heart, and thyroid issues – yep, was on birth control pills for 23 yrs, no wonder. At my last visit to my allopathic doctor, after he tried to push whooping cough vaccination on me, I decided that would be my last visit to him. So I’m getting ready for my first visit to an integrative medicine doctor. I’m not sure what to ask for since I have no pressing health issues that I’m aware of – just want new post-raw baseline testing. Should I ask for the complete blood chemistry test or something else? Where does one start with testing? The only health issue I suspect relates to intestinal flora bloat/fat gut, which I’m guessing means candida, though I am really not sure. I do mostly raw w/ some cooked vegan – have a feeling the Manna & Ezekiel bread is what’s messing me up – too heavy on the nuts & oils, too. Hopefully the doctor will be able to recommend tests cause I’m really not sure where to begin.

    Hi Kevin,

Thanks again for this show. I just had a question with regard to supplements. My daughter is 7 years old, very healthy. We are following the Hippocrates program at the moment for my husband’s health condition. I go along with it as much as possible. Their protocol is a lot of green juices (50% sprouts) which are not that palatable to her. I agree with you: Green juices are one of the best tonics you can take . I supplement mine with E3 life and we also grow our own wheat grass right now. My question: I encourage my daughter to drink the green juices but she doesn’t really enjoy it so I was looking at your products and I noticed your vitamin C and your super powder. What would you recommend for her? I need to mention that a few kids in her school have had H1N1 so I want to boost her as much as I can in a way that she can enjoy. I do make smoothies for her. Could you add any suggestions?

    Thank you Kevin

Since you are in the Atlanta area it would be a great opportunity to visit Brenda Cobb at the Living Foods Institute and perhaps get an interview with her.

    Keep up the great work.

    Hi Kevin,

I have used applied kinesiology for years on most all vitamin supplements. I feel the strengthening on one’s my body wants and so I just take those. My chiropractor is very good at it and so I do it monthly to see where I need to be.

Just thought I would share a blessing with you and everyone on the blog. I rescued a little baby grey kitten yesterday. Happens to be the same color as my recent cat of 21 years that passed away earlier this year, Miss Mollie. This little kitten is of course adorable and shall want to grow up to be like Johnny Five. I am thinking of naming her Johnny girl. I am open to sweet or fun names for her and she is very special. My heart is so full of joy as I have been missing my old companion Miss Mollie. Just had to share.

    Take care,

    Rhonda

I agree that tests like that are good for things like minerals, but the effects of a lot of these supplements are untestable with such simplistic methodologies. Like they say how ecology is not rocket science, it’s waaay more complex. We have methodologies available to us such as Goethean Science and Phenomenology, and many more from Non-Western cultures that are actually able to handle the complexities of the body/mind health. Modern reductionist science hasn’t proven adequate. So I agree that we in the natural health field must be aware of the importance of doing these basic and informative tests, we must also continue to pioneer methods of science far and beyond what is currently being followed.

To all: Per the Instructions of the Ascended Masters – they tell us to keep our attention off the body except to keep it clean & Groomed and with the appropriate amount of excercise & Eat only when hungry. When you give attention to any kind of discord or distress in the body you give it power to disturb you and you hold yourself to that condition. Great words: It is done unto you as you Believe>>>> If you believe something is wrong with your body – you are going to create that condition. God knows what is right for the body. God supplies all we need for our bodies. It is not the food that gives us the energy or health. It is God. The proof is in Breathatarians who eat nothing and have perfect health. The proof is in Fruitatarians who eat only Fruit and have perfect health. They do not worry if their bodies are getting enough of this or that. Trust in God. He will prompt you of what you need at the moment.

I do a blood test regularly every 3-6 months and everything is good in the normal range except the ferratin is on the low end (can’t seem to get that up)
In response to the topic- if there are no symptoms and the blood work is OK except the ferratin) how do you know if the supplements are working. I take several algeas regularly, eat high raw, do colonics regularly and exercise all to maintain my health as opposed to waiting to fix failing health. My energy levels are high from 4:30 am to 9pm. I don’t have symptoms signaling anything that I would like to fix- so I guess they are working (at least I hope I am not wasting my money or natural vitality)

Well, no insurance means no tests. There are no alternative/integrative practitioners here in Northern Maine anyway. My last “Medical Tests” were in Dec ‘06. I had a stroke and ended up in the hospital. They tested me for everything under the sun, while continuing to feed me beef, gravies, white bread and toast, jello for dessert, etc. When they found out I didn’t have medical insurance (I am self employed and could not afford coverage for my family), I was pronounced well enough to go home. Handed my bill ($30,000+) for all the tests that never really found out the cause of my stroke (heh… I was fat). Oh… but the tests did show and I was given prescriptions “for the rest of my life” for diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc. Two weeks later on Jan. 2 ‘07 I started a raw lifestyle and suddenly my weight started dropping, my sugars were lowering into safer levels, my blood pressure normalized. I lowered my prescriptions accordingly until I dropped them completely as my body didn’t require them anymore. I now feel 30 years younger! 85 lbs. lighter!! Drug free!!! LIFE IS WONDERFUL!

In September, I took part in a study at UCSD medical center that included a series of hemoglobin tests on a variety of factors, multiple blood pressure tests, body fat analysis, and an overnight sleep test. They paid me and they forwarded all of the test results to me.

Two years ago, I had an extensive series of tests done on my blood and saliva over a 24 hr period. These tests included a full panel on my neurotransmitters. Utterly fascinating.

Several times in the same period, I had darkfield blood analysis done. Last month, I found, Maggie, my first colon therapist from the 80’s when I used to frequent OHI in Lemon Grove (San Diego, CA area). Since finding her, I’ve gone in for two colonics. She does hair analysis. I’ve considered having an analysis and do feel it would provide a much needed baseline.

Thanks again Kev for the education and sharing your passion.

You can now get a home vitamin D test. You put 3-4 drops of blood on the blotter provided and send it in to the lab and they mail you the result. You can get the test at http://www.vitaminD3world.com They also offer a tiny micro tablet form of vitamin D3 which you can swallow, let break up in your mouth or just put under your tongue

    Hi Kevin-

First off- my heart goes out to you for your loss of a father at such an early age. I’m sure he would very proud of the legacy he left behind with your passion to reach large audiences of people and provide unbiased health information.
Second- As for medical and mineral testing- Aside of the holistic testing I got from my health practitioner I saw about 6months ago I havent gotten traditional blood work done in nearly 3 years. I’m not sure the avenues of where to get such test without insurance. Any suggestions?

I totally sympathize with you, Kevin, over the loss of your father at age 2. My mother died of polio when I was 5 years old. I remember clearly the day my dad came home and found me pounding pegs through a peg board (anyone remember those toys?) and he told me to stop because my mother had a bad headache. I never saw her again, so for years I thought it was my fault she died!

The last time I had any testing was 7 months ago, for cholesterol since I was 59 and never see her :) (I went in to see about an achy shoulder–turned out to be tendonitis.) She said I was in great shape for a woman my age.

My before and after story concerns the Juice Plus I started taking in 2003. Up to that point I was constantly having colds and when they went down into my chest I would get really scared, so I was motivated. Within a month of starting on Juice Plus I stopped getting colds! I could count on one hand the number of colds I have had in the last 6 years, and those were very minor and occurred when I was stressed out. Don’t need a medical test to prove this supplement is working for me! Check out Juice Plus for yourself at my website http://www.lacelle-solution-juiceplus.com.

I do agree before and after medical tests for specific things are an excellent idea. I am trying to encourage my daughter to go back and have her adrenals checked again, to see if any of the things we’ve been doing for her have worked.

Kevin, I think its a really good thing that you promote things you believe in, because your honest and your opinions comes from your heart, not the bank.

I visited a Kinesiology practitioner in january and got told i had low levels of zinc, havent been back yet to get my levels rechecked but ill go in january 2010.

I was wondering about B12 deficiency and supplements also.
I consider myself a very healthy person with a good, vegan (80% raw) diet and regular exercise – but I tend to be tired alot. Like, at present time im spening all my time at my desk studying for my final exams (graduating in BSc Biol.) and i keep falling asleep – Ive been experienceing this for years and years – I remember in high school I got into a lot of trouble with my teachers cause i kept falling asleep in class..
This worries me more and more as time goes by..

Wow, really great show today – truly heartfelt and passionate, Kevin. And I found the responses all over the place! I’m very surprised by how many people have blood tests (and others) more than once a year, or even twice a year. It’s like everything else in life, eh? A spectrum. Some don’t do any testing, others an extreme amount, and most of the rest of us are someplace in the middle. Todays’ question got me thinking about a question, too. I struggle with the proper time of day and combinations of, supplements I take. Do you have a good resource for learning what vitamins can be taken with others, when best to take probiotics, interaction precautions, etc. So many things (vitamins at least) will say “take with a meal”, but I don’t think it’s necessarily good to take them all at the same time! Then it feels as if they are the meal! I have often heard that herbs can wreck the body’s ability to assimilate supplements, medications, etc. (prescription Asthma meds I’m not able to get off of – YET), and worry that this is true for certain combos of vitamins also. So a resource you could direct us to would be great, unless of course that resource is you. Then feel free to disccuss at great length!

I haven’t had any medical tests done for a long time…I can’t even think of an example of one really. I also have never had a nutritional test done.

    Hi Kevin,
Thanks for the great info as always – after listening to this show I went online to research how to get a hair test for heavy metals/minerals/etc. – but there are so many different sites (who to trust?) and many are very expensive. Can you recommend a place or website that you trust for this type of testing? Or maybe another viewer can recommend something? One that is more affordable would be great, but I also am not sure what all to get tested (besides heavy metals & minerals) so I don’t want to pay for unnecessary things or omit important things. Any suggestions are welcome, thanks! :)

First of all…to Jacque – Dr. Jaffe does hair tests for heavy metal testing. She is downtown Chicago (312-939-5960) and also has a Skokie office (847-763-1700).

I do the annual wellness check with fasting blood work just to “keep tabs” on my numbers. I also get a cholesterol check when I donate blood every two months.

Is this full vitamin/mineral blood test something you can get done by a primary doctor or do you have to go to an alternative doctor? And how is this test different from the live blood testing done by nutritional microscopist that someone mentioned earlier?

I have been tested so many times in the last five years and I feel as though I am chasing demons with the overall label of “chronic fatigue syndrome.”.

When I show no symptoms, I test high for candida; when I feel classic symptoms, I test negative.

Iron is fine, minerals are fine, amino acids are fine.

Hormones test radically differently each time, although seratonin is always low.

Kevin, with your adrenal fatigue and candida, besides the four things you mentioned which were specific to minerals, what did you do to overcome this issue?

    Kevin – great show

    1) Can you do a show on clinical tests that are actually worth the $$$

Most doctors are not great w/nutrition and who knows if the ‘tests’ they recommend are really effective.

I have heard of some you can mail in yourself and would be interested in your recommendations.

    2) You guys can’t spend your days providing us with all this FREE INFORMATION unless you have a way to make a living. Offering viewers products you feel are worthwile is win win. Dr. Mercola does the same thing.

The alternative is to work a FT job and hope to fit in free ‘tidbits’ in your spare time – believe me it just doesn’t work. Maintaining a good website takes an enormous amount of time and effort.

Example – I liked the interview you did w/the lady who works w/AnneMarie to formulate the skin care line.

It was obvious that this lady knows what she is doing and the product isn’t just a bunch of exotic stuff thrown together w/a high pricetag.

There are so many ‘faux’ ‘organic’ skin care products that just throw some organic stuff in a chemical base and fool the customer – like the $50 eye cream I saw at this place – I read the label and you couldn’t pronounce half the ingredients yet the line was heavily touted as ‘organic’ and ‘top of the line’.

If I ever decide to spend $$$ on high quality skincare I will definitely buy Anne Marie’s stuff. The interview helped me a great deal so it’s not like it’s just some ’sales pitch’.

I just had a cool test this weekend…it was a skin scanner that tested my carotenoids and antioxidant levels. I havent been 100% raw, but I have been juicing wheatgrass, eating a salad everyday, taking triphala, and noni juice daily. My levels were the highest the tester had ever seen! Wow, that felt so good to realize that I am getting results from my healthy habits. The best part was realizing that a cookie here and there, or some meat once in a while, is not erasing the great properties of the veggies and fruits.
    To your health, Katie

    Hey Kevin,

I am dirt poor and can not afford any of these tests, Tapes, books or many different food sources. I did manage to get some almost affordable Vita mineral Green from Matt’s Web Site Rawfoodworld.com
I take 2000units of ISO D3,sub lingual B12,Reishsi mushroom supplement from mushroom science and eat organic veggies and fruits, Broccoli sprouts and nuts and hemp seeds.I eat Bee Pollen, put trace minerals and Himalaya sea salt in my purified water. I try to eat what DR T of Thetruhtaboutyourfood.com says we need to eat every day.Being poor it’s hard to get all the right foods. To make sure I can afford the right stuff I just eat less. Yeah but what can you do? I did beat the flu with Vita mineral green garlic and Iso D3, two days and it was gone! HA! GO RAW!
