We spent one rainy day in Dallas yesterday…
Just enough rain to motivate us to call our friend and fitness expert Scott Colby, who showed us some great core exercises to tighten up the abs and more.
These are great exercises and we’ve given you some options in case you’re a beginner.
Take a look…
Your question of the day: Have you ever been to a fitness bootcamp? What was your experience?

What a great show! I have never been to a fitness boot camp. His approach seems to really make sense.
Annemarie ~ You give me something to strive for. Of course, you are a young, healthy, vibrant woman, but I think some of us that are not so young and that may have health concerns can really be inspired by you.
Keep up the great work!

I was in a fitness bootcamp for one month. It was the yelling kind. I kind of liked it, but I hurt my knee and my shoulder and decided that I my needed something more gentle.

Enjoyed the show. I workout regularly using DVDs and am getting great results without lots of expensive equipment. AnnMarie, you look terrific. Keep it up girl!

I just tried the suicide plank – – whoaa
– thats a great one!!
Yep – I joined a Saturday AM bootcamp about 6 weeks ago – and love it. It’s both men and women – and also a wide age range – 14 yr olds to 54 yr olds and many inbetween. Great workouts.
Great show, guys
..thanks so much!!

Ok I’ve been a closet Renegade fan for too long! That’s it… I’m hooked! Thank you so much for the great videos and brightening my days! You both are truly an inspiration and great source of information! You guys are adorable and funny! Love your show!
…on a side note, I’ve never been to a boot camp but have heard great things about them, I’m pretty much homebound with little ones running about, and this video has inspired me to get myself movin! I’m on a health kick and this is a great start, can’t wait to feel the burn…!!

I really liked those exercises that were shared. I must add them to my routine.
Thanks for the info on how to find a boot camp and things to look out for from an instructor as well as asking about a “trial period” or a 30 day “M/B/G”.

That Renegade blurb across the bottom of the screen is really in the way of a pleasurable viewing experience. I’d like to see that coach with his shirt off because he looks pretty chubby. What is HE eating??

Great video! I really enjoyed seeing the bodyweight exercises. I was lucky enough to participate in a fitness bootcamp in Tacoma led by Jeff Jowers. It gave me amazing and quick results and I surprised myself at how much I can push myself. Sometimes it was pretty grueling, but the results were immensely satisfying! Nothing like being able to lift heavy objects that weeks ago would have given me trouble. And losing 3 inches off my waist fairly quickly made the efforts worthwhile. I learned how to lift kettlebells (that was fun!) and we did body rows from hanging loops from straps suspended from the ceiling. We revisited many old-school bodyweight exercises (i.e. burpies, inchworm, jumping jacks, etc.) and I found that they can be just as effective as the most expensive piece of gym equipment. The great thing about the program I was on was that the exercises, reps, and movement changed from day to day. It was never boring and definitely led to results.

Kevin and Annmarie,
Great show tonight. I have to tell you what my 10 year old son said last week. I was attempting to put some of Kevs Super Del. in his smoothie and he screamed and grabbed it and said “No, I don’t want to be a dwarf!” I laughed and asked him what he meant and he pointed to your picture on the bottle and said “He is the leader of the raw dwarfs!” I died laughing at that point!
Tonight he actually requested a green smoothie, and after he saw me put in Kevs Super Del. he said “Why did you have to do it?” “What?” I said, and he said “You made me a raw dwarf!”
Gotta love the kids!

If you live in the bay area and are interested in taking boot camp classes I used to be a client and loved it so much that I then became an assistant coach for this amazing company. They’re called AlaVie: http://alaviefitness.com/index.php I love boot camp!
8:53 pm on October 22nd, 2009
I liked the exercises because they are not done laying on your back.
I would also like it if you would share a few of your meals for a day that would be good for a beginner.

@Tracy: That is hilarious! Your poor son LOL
Awesome show as always guys! I haven’t exercised in a long time, I really need to!

Another great show! Scott has a wide variety of movement knowledge. One of my children never crawled. Just ran like a ‘bear’ (or dog) and ended up to be quite an accomplished athlete
Gotta find a bootcamp for sure. Perfect idea!

Never been to an actual bootcamp. Love the suicide plank & crab to bear and back. Will definitely use those. Don’t forget commando crawl that’s a fun one too–in a hover, crawling forward on forearms & toes and then crawling back.

PERRECT TIMING! This video is really awesome-loved the timing because I am working out my abs like crazy; it’s good to learn different exercises. Thanks!

Thank you so much Kevin and Annmarie

Excellent show! You look great, Annmarie!
I think boot camp is great for those who want a kick start to their exercise regime.
But at the end of the day, what keeps a person exercising long after the boot camp is over is what they refer to in psychology as self-efficacy. That is finding a physical activity that you can do given your health constraints and physical condition, that you really enjoy that allows you to accomplish something in the longer term that truly inspires you.

Hope you find this contribution from Down Under helpful!
Have a great weekend everyone.

This was great. Scott Colby is such a mellow guy and I love anything to do with exercise. While boot camps are excellent (though I’ve never done one), I just wanted to say particularly for older/injured people, any body weight exercises are an ideal way to go.
Strength training becomes even more important as we age or need to repair a disability, but accumulated ‘body rust’ and the idea of gym workouts, among other things, can be a block. Even if you’re not ready for boot camps, take a look on the Net for someone who is a physical therapist and a certified trainer. They’ll be able to help you gradually strenthen your joints and then build up from there.
I had a list of injuries after training on Smith machines and just lifting weights that were too heavy for my joints and I’ve been through this process. Even if you can barely get off the couch, find yourself a doctor of physical therapy who offers a video-based body weight rehab/exercise program you can do from home. It won’t be instant but it will make an incredible difference.

I participate in a step aerobics class. The instructor incorporates ab work and weights. We did the suicide plank in Wednesday’s class. My abs are feeling it today!

I actually used to lead a semi-bootcamp– it was for moms and their relatively new babies– it was a stroller fitness class outside. We would do a lot of exercises like Scott showed.
I LOVE this format– if you did this (different instructors with AM demonstrating (she is sooo cute btw!) I would watch fitness fridays again! Great show- and good to add at the end Kev the piece about knowing when ur being pushed too hard.
On an unrelated note, I ordered the bee pollen from ur store and its been weeks and after the original confirmation email, I havent heard anything or received it yet??? Thanks…..

AS always Scott’s interviews are very informative and sprinkled with humor. What is the name of the “Breakdance” move?
Answer to today’s question: No I have never been to a bookcamp. Clone Scott and move him to So Cal and I’m there.

Absolutely GREAT show Kevin, Annemarie and Scott! Thanks for the demos…I am so inspired to try the core/ab exercises. I personally have never been to a bootcamp but am motivated to try to find one that will work for me. Thanks for the encouragement guys! (BTW I am loving Annemarie’s new mask product…good enough to eat!)

Cool! Thanks for this. I am looking for a new workout and something that doesn’t involve weight training which I HATE!!

I live in Dallas and am fortunate enough to attend Scott’s Women’s Bootcamp. I have just completed my 2′nd week of the 3-week camp. WOO HOO! I came into it very out of shape. I love it! Scott is awesome, and I recommend his camps to everyone! It is a very positive, supportive environment. I am learing a lot and plan to continue with his training.

Hey,
I have been looking at your different exercises for different areas and I want to try them all!
I want to work on all of my muscles to feel fit and strong in all areas
, should I work on one area one day, then move on to another area the next and another the next?
Is once a week on each area of the body enough to gradually but significantly build up strength and tone,
I understand we all are different, but is there any loose plan you would recommend to bring the whole body into shape that won’t take all day, everyday?
Your shows are brilliant, great food for thought. Thankyou!

I found myself smiling throughout that whole show.

Great Clip! I never did a formal ‘boot camp’ but did do the Fitness Challenge @ Kripalu – 5 days – great schedule of hiking, biking, kayaking, yoga (all versions), nutrition seminars and wonderful organic foods. It was exactly what Scott mentioned – a group of folks that supported and learned from each other. It changed my life.
Love Scott’s ‘body weight’ methods!

I tried a couple of the exercies today and they were fun, a good change from what I usually do. AND I realize Ann Marie made the reverse-push-up one look much easier than it was!:-) You look great, Ann Marie!
It was good to have an exercise video. Can you do more boot camp-type exercises? I’ve never been to one but I think it would be interesting.
Thanks!

I’ve been doing a boot camp class at my gym for the past couple of years. Every class is super challenging and although I’m a regular, it never gets any easier. I shared this video with my instructor. Some of the moves we do already but we added the push-ups and lunges to squat thrusts, which made them way harder! We also did the “break dance” move. By the end of class I was getting some evil glares for my suggestions but I think they were appreciated, as well. I was pretty sore for the next couple of days. I’d love to see more videos about exercise on the show!
3:29 pm on October 28th, 2009
oohhh… I cant wait to try these new moves at the gym. Thanks Kevin and Ann Marie. Yes I used to attend a fitness boot camp back home. I remember the first time I attended the boot camp I felt energized and ampted. But by morning time I need assistance bending or picking anything up and walking was at the same pace of a snail. I loved it!

Yes, been to a few different types of bootcamps – I do a bootcamp & circuit training class at my gym a few times a week – they involve mostly bodyweight and small dumbbells – one of the classes is on the Bosu ball. I’ve done outdoor bootcamps – military style – usually with some motivational yelling. I’ve traveled to California to do Billy Blanks’(R) Tae Bo(R) (cardio-kickboxing) certification boot camp which incorporated a lot of general conditioning along with the martial arts. Boot camp & circuit training classes are my favorite classes at my gym. I really try not to miss them and make them a priority in my weekly schedule.

Come on up to Hampton Roads, VA and you will see that Boot Camps are not “Back in the Day”, but alive and well! Thanks for the ideas, my challenge is weak wrists and neck misalignment, but Ill give them a try.

I’ve attended a few bootcamps and even taught a few. I’d say you get a better workout as a teacher because you have to be able to able to speak at you perform the exercise(that takes alot of lung power, and you know everyone is watching you and modeling you.
My favorite camp that I attended would have to be a 3 day kung fu camp. Very intense but built some cool relationships in that short time.
