No, yesterday I was not doing the pee-pee dance…

I just have a hard time standing still! Anywhere! Anytime! :-)

Today, I’m going to try to keep myself calm and explain how I stopped my teeth from getting yellow. It may be an easier solution than you may think.

I’ll also talk about honey and kombucha, tooth pain, cavities and our tooth protocol.

Enjoy…

Your question of the day: What is your tooth protocol?

If you are in Honolulu, Dr Carlson in Kahala is the dentist to go to. He is non evasive and totally against root canals. He says every root canal he has ever removed was gangrenous. Same with implants. He biulds bridges without destroying the good teeth.

A couple of months ago I was very diligent about brushing with MMS & I did notice an improvement in the size of the pockets in my gums. You have reminded me that I should start up again, plus I am curious about the cal/mag for brushing.
    Thanks

Thanks so much for this! I wish I’d known before not to mess around with so many green smoothies…my son went from ZERO cavities as a lifelong vegan, to NINETEEN cavities as a raw foodist, in only 8 MONTHS.

While we were very particular about tooth care and balancing out fruits and greens, green smoothies were a daily, and sometimes several times a day event.

I did notice green smoothies made my teeth hurt over time as well, so I went to green juices instead. I just thought it was because I’d always had sensitive teeth, thus I didn’t think to limit the kids’ green smoothies.

When we know better, we do better.

We use non abrasive tooth cleansers like the baking soda/mineral mix you use, Dr. Bronners peppermint soap, and Gum Joy tooth oil. I’m looking into some other products, but alternating those seems to keep our teeth looking nice. My husband and I have had no additional tooth problems on raw, but then we don’t do the green smoothies all day like the kids did.

I’ve been a vegan for about 9 years, and just recently (about a year ago or 1 1/2 yrs) I started having problems with my teeth – cavities and needing other dental work. This is something I never experienced! Then I read on another web site that vegans sometimes have issues with their teeth – cracks and cavities. Has anyone heard of this? What am I missing that I should be supplementing to have healthier teeth?

Kevin, the show today was awesome, thanks! And I love that you are standing in what looks like a shower :)

Activated Charcoal works great for whitening your teeth…Baking Soda messes with the PH of your body, and my brushing with it, some of it seeps into your system…Activated Charcoal, when you make a paste of it and put a bit in gauze, works great also for toothaches…One more thing…If you mix half and half of Activated Charcoal along with Goldenseal root, you can literally reverse Gingivitis/Pyorrhea/….Whenever using Activated Charcoal, be sure to rinse your teeth/mouth and rebrush with healthy toothpaste afterwards…This also gets rid of very bad/or just bad breath…

More than 50 of kind plants (that stick to made miswak) as a tools for cleaning the teeth which had use for many country and culture in the world.

But the only most popular stick to made health your teeth and mouths, is obtained from a plant called Salvadora Persica that grows around Mecca and Middle East area in general. Salvadora Persica L is publicly known in Arab, Africa and India as a “cleaner teeth tree”, used as a toothbrush and twig chew. It was uses as cleaner stalk since more than 1000 years.
Wherever that extracts from that plants produce sulfur as of a lot of main element. Beside that, pharmacology data is showing antibiotic, anti-inflammatory and activates hypoglycemic, that use against bacterial in the mouth.

Norman WAlker in BECOME YOUNGER, page 93 says:

“When we take any drugs or anything, like bicarbonate of soda, for example, which are inorganic products, and they are not more or less promptly expelled from the body, they form a deposit in some part of the anatomy. It happens that b. of S. has an affinity for the upper part of the head, the region of the brain. The use of it will sooner or later display a silver-like crescent on the upper part of the iris. This means that the body did not expel it and it lodged in the region of the brain. The nerves in that region automatically register its presence there.”

I am curious if it is only the smoothies (high sugar) that are causing dental problems or if it is something more significant missing in the diet… like calcium and minerals?? Why would “vegans have problems with cracks and cavities”?

    Hi Kevin and Annmarie,

We do pretty much what you do as you describe it Kevin, same products (got the whitener from you in fact :) ) but additionally would like to mention the value of oil pulling as a strategy. Essentially we take a small amount of raw sesame oil and let it sit in the mouth for about 20 minutes (some find this offensive and bail on the practice) then rinse the mouth out really well. It works great if you can handle the practice. Does wonders for the teeth and gums.

Some of us have teeth which will never whiten!
I asked my dentist to give me a whitening treatment and he told me that it would not work because the sclera (whites) of my eyes were very gray and this indicates the teeth will be in the same color family (forever).

I did get my teeth kind of bluish from a lot of blueberries, tho!
So maybe your yellow teeth came from….summer squash??
    Thanks!

I’m a red head and I was born with yellow teeth! – which apparently is common for us with red hair.

My mum took me to a dentist when I was about 10 years old and they said I’d have to sit my teeth in bleach if I wanted to make them white. Luckily my mum said no way.

I’d LOVE to find a safe & natural teeth whitener. I’ll give this one a go, hopefully it’ll make a bit of difference :) If not, it’s back searching!

Great show but more Jonny 5, please.
Ironically I just did my research on Toothsoap and am changing my dental protocol.

Some people actually brush with baking soda everyday! I lasted 3 days – it was hurting my mouth too much. So the info about no more than once a week is golden.

Yes floss. Not really religious about it but I am really thorough with the brush. (10 years of orthodontics taught me a thing or two about brushing).

I am a mouthwash kind of gal but after learning about why glycerin is not tooth enamel friendly, I am making my own (same with the tooth soap).

Oh and yes, yes, I need to go to the dentist. The last one was a sadist with the ice cold water on my cold sensitive teeth. And sold me a crappy whitenening kit that had me in pain for 3 weeks after only using it a couple of times. grrrrrrrrrrr

But I have new health insurance so I can try again with someone better.

I had some problems with my teeth and gums too. I’ve used several products and decided since I’ve studied aromatherapy and herbal healing I could make my own product. After much research and trial and error, I came up with a wonderful product. It’s called Happy teeth and gums. It’s affordable, it taste great, and most of all it works!Get it here http://www.bluegrassmarket.etsy.com.
A good mouth rinse if you have gum problems is to add a few drops of tincture of myrrh to 4oz water and rinse and spit. It really works wonders.

Synchronicity – I was thinking I needed to post today about teeth. My holistic dentist also said that pretty much all root canals turn toxic. Today I had mine pulled. It was only aching a little in the last couple of weeks, and the gums looked totally normal with only a small cyst showing up on the x ray, but when he removed it, there was a cyst about the size of a small grape and a lot of pus! My body had obviously been fighting infection for awhile. I originally wanted it removed because I did not want the toxins or metal in my mouth, and because I suspect it may be the cause of my chronic fatigue. After hearing him describe what he found I know I made the right decision. Also, something called cavitations could be causing many people problems without them even knowing it, for example when you get your wisdom teeth out and they don’t clean it out properly and remove the peridontal ligament. That is next on my list to check out. I believe that many forms of dental work could be the largest latent cause of systemic diseases such as autoimmune diseases. I’d encourage anybody with health issues to consider your teeth. And take really good care of them so you don’t have to get dental work! I’m currently trying to find some good toothpaste. Toothsoap is really expensive and not readily available in Canada. I am currently experimenting with Dr. Bronner’s.

I have always wondered if raw foods and fruit are a natural diet for humans, why does eating this way cause our teeth to rot?
Thousands of years ago before toothbrushes, soap and dental floss how did they keep their teeth from rotting?

I had a theory that it is an imbalance of healthy flora in the mouth because our environment is so sterile. This is just a thought but I can’t imagine that a natural, healthy diet would cause such serious dental problems.

I love Ecodent tooth powder much better than toothsoap. It’s available at Whole Foods and I think you can order it online. I have always had good gums/teeth, despite my upbringing on hostess products :) , but was getting a recessed spot on my gum. This flaired on and off no matter what diet I was on – carnivore, vegan, veggie and raw. I also sometimes make my own paste consisting of baking soda, sea salt, peppermint oil, hydrogen peroxide. It does help to whiten the teeth. I also noticed that my diet can cause a flair up, it’s usually too many refined carbs and/or alcohol.

This may help someone. I had an abcess once and someone told me to put a green tea bag on it. So I slipped the green tea bag between my tooth and cheek and went to bed. It took the pain away and I woke up and it literally pulled most of the poison out into the tea bag. I did it one more night and the abcess was all gone. I didn’t miss any work and no one even noticed. It REALLY worked.

Lyme Disease can be chronic for some people and it hides in the root canals of dead-zone teeth. Our living teeth do breathe but crowns and such provide a stagnant breeding ground for these bacteria. Dr. Landerman in Sebastol, CA is a leader in this work.

Great show. Kevin you did a great job of explaining all this…did you rehearse? :)

Timely topic–my daughter just had her wisdom teeth pulled under general anesthetic in a hospital. “Complicated extraction.” My son is about to have his remaining 3 removed, too, but he says he’s not letting anyone put him under! Unfortunately, the dentist referred him to the dental surgeon our daughter went to so we’ll see about that!

We heard of oil pulling last year (probably from this blog) and I thought it would probably help our daughter who constantly struggles with health issues. Hubby volunteered to try it first, before introducing the idea to our daughter. He lasted just a few days. Too much bother, I guess. I would try it, but I had all my teeth removed years ago. Sigh.

I told my husband about tooth soap, too. He is definitely not interested in spending that much money…

Hmmm, gangrene from root canals. What do you know! Maybe that’s one reason I was so sick and had bleeding gums and had to have my teeth pulled! I sure don’t miss all those dental visits…

My tooth protocol is…you guessed it…rinsing out dentures and plopping a little disk in hot water for the night. :)

Tandi: I’ve been wondering that too. I think that you might have a point. We are constantly messing with and destroying our bacterial flora, and it’s usually best to just let it be.

But we also have to realize that the modern cultivated plants and fruits we eat today are very different from the original wild varieties, so much that most people would not recognize them.
Wild fruits are rarely sweet and have higher fiber and mineral content. So I would think that they are much less harmful to the teeth.

I have been consuming 1-2 green smooties per day for the past year(admittedly with only one piece of fruit in them)and I have had no problems with my teeth. However, I also consume unpasteurised cheese and yogurt(When I went without the dairy for a couple of months my menstrual cycle ceased, I lost weight and felt terrible. I resumed dairy 4 months ago and feel fab, but I guess everyone is different). I know most of you wouldn’t touch dairy with a 40 foot pole but just throwing my tuppence worth in!

    Kevin,

I didn’t even know holistic dentists existed till your show on 9/8/09. Would you mind talking a little bit about how to select a good holistic dentist, besides just looking up names on the web? What are some good questions to ask?

As someone who’s been told by dentists that the only solution for any type of tooth cracks, big or small, is a root canal, it was very interesting to see a comment about a particular holistic dentist who is against root canals. I am sure holistic dentists and conventional dentists are worlds apart, but I still wonder if some holistic dentists are better at what they do than others…

I don’t know but I’ve been told by a good source that “Kombucha” can be brewed with honey, but it’s not kombucha anymore, merely a lacto-fermented drink. Of course honey can be fermented, — mead. I’ve made lacto-ferments with honey (it does take longer) but I agree honey is what we should be going for here. I’ve been told that what makes Kombucha unique is only created by the organism eating sugar and tea, nothing else. Look forward to your next video. Thanks.

I also do not believe that it is a clean plant based diet that is causing tooth problems, it has to be caused by something else.

Either way, I use a baking soda, essential oil infused toothpaste that is non-abrasive, along with essential oil coated dental floss and mouthwash (also infused with essential oils) and it is fantastic! This permeates the gum line and is extremely anti-microbial and kills all the bacteria that cause bad breath properly.

Merry asked about receeding gums. My dentist said it was from using a hard tooth brush and brushing back and forth – not around. I’m changing now – we’ll see how it goes. Love the show – good topic for raw foodists. Enjoy all the responses too – always learn here.

I was so glad to hear about tooth health! something I need desperately, at age 64 and after four children, several fillings, teeth pulled, etc. I want to keep what I have left and I want them to be healthy! thanks again for sharing! and the info re: washing mouth after green smoothie was especially helpful as I drink one each day!
    thanks again!

This was the show for me…Because of having Celiac Disease my teeth have lost some enamel and so they stain quite easily. I have tried a few tooth soaps (vitality, heritage) but haven’t found anything that I love and didn’t recognize the label on the one you are using (and couldn’t find anything about The Tooth Soap Company you mentioned) so could you head me in the right direction and possibly recommend one or two that you have tried? thanks!!!

Hi. Very interesting stuff! This is the first time I’ve heard of “Oil Pulling”. I’d be very interested in your take on this, Kevin? Is there anything against it? Everything I can find seems very positive.

    Cheers,

Kev – you need a mountain bike, it’s one of the best outlets for that pee dance energy, a good six hour ride through the mountains should do it. And it would be perfect for your current traveling lifestyle.

Wondering why no one has mentioned xylitol? It keeps bacteria from adhering to the teeth and has a number of medicinal properties as well. For periodontal disease, which I had, it is an auto-immune issue and you need to correct the communication of your immune system so it recognizes your own tissue and won’t cause the inflammation that leads to swelling and the gum pulling away from the teeth which allows for food trapping and bacteria lodging and bone loss. check out polysaccharides for immune modulation. I use the Ambrotose formula for a balance of all eight.

    Kevin,
Isn’t the “tooth brightener” that you recommend pretty much the same as brushing with baking soda?

About Ascended Health products: I guess the person who posted this doesn’t realize that most of use here are vegetarians, vegans or at very least are not into animal cruelty. “…extracts from ground Elk Antler” are not going anywhere near any part of me.
Even if you are an omnivore, the way this is harvested should give you reason to say no.

I don’t think it’s so much how well we clean out teeth after eating sugar, but just how much sugar we eat period. Dr. Weston Price had found that the native populations he studied virtually never brushed their teeth and yet had very low incidences of tooth decay. After analyzing their diets he found them to be much higher in vitamins an minerals than the standard american diet. They also didn’t eat huge amounts of sugar, and when they did turn to such foods tooth decay accelerated. So, I’d pass on too much fruit and get better aquatinted with savory green smoothies. Sea vegetables are also great because of their mineral and trace mineral content. Avoid anything with glycerin too. It plugs up the microtubules in your teeth: http://www.curetoothdecay.com/Root_Canal/microscope_tooth.htm

Several people have mentioned oil pulling and I’ve tried it for ‘deep pockets’ >4mm. My experience has been positive, similar to (expensive) antibiotic treatments. I’m not sure of whitening or other benefits from my experience, but maybe. The explanation of how oil can clean or pull bacteria from you mouth sounds logical but…all I can say for sure is my pockets seem to have been cleaned out. I’ll let the dentist tell me for sure in a few months. Kevin, have you done any research on oil pulling?

Great topic. My teeth are far more yellow than I’d like them to be but that’s just the color they came in as. My dentist says there are big variations in natural tooth color. No amount of baking soda or other abrasive will whiten them since the color is inside.

I’m currently using Tooth Soap. I forgot about the Brightener so thanks for the reminder. Will have to start using that again.

My daughter who has the same yellow tooth color bought some toxic commercial tooth whitening toothpaste and it actually works. It doesn’t seem to be bleaching but I think it puts something on the teeth, perhaps calcium. I need to go through all the ingredients and figure out which one is doing that whitening trick!

I used a fairly natural, except for preservative, toothpaste for quite a while that had ionic calcium in it. It whitened very mildly. I’ve also heard that people who drink raw milk and don’t brush after will fill their cavities. Never paid much attention since raw milk is virtually impossible to come by here and it’s kind of yukky anyway but for white teeth, it could be worth try!

Juicing and high dosing zeolites helped rid me of a severely bad abscess that needed a root canal. I didn’t want the tooth removed so I just tried it and it went from unbearable pain (even air hurt!) to pain-free in about 2 weeks but I kept up with the juicing and smoothies for 6 weeks just to be sure.

Jameth Sheridan’s presentation was excellent. Thanks for the info today Kevin and great comments from everyone too!

So I went back to my email and the next one linked to an upcoming book on tooth care. Looks like it’s about Xylitol. I know a few people who have rid themselves of severe tooth problems with Xylitol. Of course it’s not raw vegan but it beats the heck out of losing a tooth!

This was a fantastic vid post and very very helpful.

My health journey actually began in my mouth with root canalled teeth and amalgam fillings. I spent thousands getting things fixed. Dental health is soo soo important to ones overall health.

Currently I use a tea tree oil tooth paste and floss. But this show has got me thinking and I need to up the care of my teeth.

I have zero cavities and super white teeth. Funny that this episode came up now because just yesterday I was horrified to look in the mirror and see a yellow-ish tint! I started using the Dr. Bronner’s because I read about some raw foodist raving about it and I love how fast it lathers but I should have known better. If I feel a film on my face when I wash my face, why wouldn’t something be sticking to my teeth, too? So I used baking soda to scrub it off and now I need a new product. I did use Tooth Soap when I first went raw in 2006. I do love the fast lather. I just get so nervous about my teeth! I don’t even do smoothies (I juice but rinse and brush immediately after.) so I’m convinced it was the Dr. Bronner’s.

I used the tooth soap on my teeth for a yearand at first I was happy with it. By the end of the year My 2 top front teeth were starting to look brown. I do not drink coffee so I knew that was not the culprit. I went to get my teeth cleaned and the dentist even commented on it. I decided to go back to the tooth cleansing I was doing before and I now have white teeth once again. I use a product called Homeodent. It is a natural toothpaste put out by Boiron.

Every night I use an oral irrigator with Ipsadent and bloodroot in the water before I brush my teeth.

Every night and morning I brush my teeth with tooth soap shreds. I use Tooth Swish, a blend of salts, after rinsing the soap out of my mouth.

If you are moving around a lot, fidgeting, etc., and people are noticing, you may have nervous energy that you’re unconscious of, so your viewers are asking you to get conscious. After all, that’s what this raw experience is about…getting conscious, yes?

I do oil swishing every morning, then I clean my tongue and wash my teeth.

In the evening I wash my teeth and use floss. I clean my tongue once more.

For washing teeth I use japanese brand MITOKU powder that is made of eggplant and sea salt. And that is all in it. It is actually fun to use because you have black teeth as you start and afterwards you end up with shiny white teeth.

I brush my teeth twice a day with Jason PowerSmile All-Natural Whitening Toothpaste, floss and use a hydrogen-peroxide based mouthwash. My teeth are pretty white. Hi Kevin-

Thanks for the great info. I’ve yet to try toothsoap as I’m sold on Young Living Oils thieves toothpaste- which is amazing tasting and cleans well. Doubles as an on the spot pimple treater:) I actually had developed my first cavity this year after being on the raw diet for two years- I was shocked to say the least when the holistic dentist told me. So I have been making sure to get back to flossing daily along with brushing.

Have done (coconut) oil pulling for several weeks, it works GREAT on teeth whitening and much better gums and saliva flow, therefor digestion. Absolutely worth checking out.

For the toothsoap, can try here.
    http://www.toothsoap.com/
Been using it for years with great results, and ABSOLUTELY need to have the brightener once/week or you will get discolorization.

I also use acidic water from my ionizer to rinse each time. Completely destroys the germs, and desolves ALL residue in your mouth so you can remineralize better.

    Cheers, /Doug.

I make my own toothpaste (tooth liquid) with castile soap, peppermint essential oil, tea tree oil and water. Works amazing! Every once in a while I will brush with baking soda and sea salt. And occasionally I use I paste I make with horsetail powder, bentonite clay powder, peppermint EO and water. I also floss, and massage my gums with my fingers. Sometimes I will put whatever tooth cleaner I am using right on my fingers and let my fingers do the ‘brushing’ over my teeth and gums. Is a very nice mouth massage.

I thought, maybe a few weeks back, you said brushing with baking soda would wear your enamel down since it is abrasive? And now you are recommending a tooth soap based on baking soda?

    Which is it?

So would rinsing with water, after drinking a smoothie or juice, be good enough?

I have 3 root canals. Now that I know better I would like to get rid of them but I do not want to be a “toothless lady” either. Any suggestions?

Please check on internet info on Dr. Robert Nara on dental care. You can buy his two books in an eBook form for $20.

I am not sure about the lady who sells the Tooth soap. The company name is Perfect Prescription I think. At first I was excited that I found a better alternative to toothpaste. I did some research and I think that her toothsoaps might be OK but they are way, way overpriced. Her 2 oz bottle is almost $30 and then S&H. I have bought Dr. Bronner’s castile soap-32oz for around $20. The ingredient list is the same except for palm oil. Her 70 page book on proper tooth care is almost $30 as well. I do not like greed. I am going to use Dr. Bronner’s soap.
