Is Kefir Starter Vegan – The Renegade Health Show Episode #359

We got a TON of questions from yesterday’s show about coconut kefir…

So today, I recruited a friend to help me answer some questions. He’s a fellow smoothie lover… you’ll see… :-)

Here are some of the questions that I discuss…

- If bacteria does grow in the kefer, is it obvious?
- What’s in Kefir starter? Is it suitable for vegans?
- What are the benefits of coconut kefir?
- What is the refrigerator shelf-life of coconut kefir?
- Can you use the very young jelly coconuts to make kefir?
- How much probiotics do you have to use for kefir?
- I wonder if I could use some of that as a starter for coconut Kefir?
- Is is anything like Rejuvelac, without the wheat berry sprouts?

Take a look…

Your question of the day: Do you eat smoothies for breakfast?

Check out kefirlady.com and Dom’s Kefir at http://users.chariot.net.au/~dna/kefirpage.html You get a full detail on live water kefir and milk kefir grains. I highly recomemend live kefir grains over a starter. You online buy the live grains once and they keep growing and producing more.

Is kefir starter vegan ? Coconut is, of course, vegan. So are bacteria! You may like to think of them as little animals. In fact, leeuwenhoek (1632 – 1723) referred to bacteria as animalcules. Scientists, however, categorize bacteria as PLANTS.

OMG Lyle is a SUPERSTAR– keep adding the link to his show– My 3 year old (and I) LOVE Todd Parr– I cant wait to get the Love Book– how did they get such a cool intro? The LYleShow ROCKS!

I have been inspired by all of the renegade health show talk about smoothies to try to cut back on my high fat trail mix breakfast by having a green smoothie every other day. Its been so refreshing, especially when I make it early and can stick it in the freezer until it is a little like a slushy– YUM! You guys taught me how to keep it simple and not put like everything I had in the kitchen in it and they are so much better!

Thanks…..you guys are so great, when are u coming to NY?????

I have a green smoothie every morning and sometimes I make an extra one to bring to work. They don’t always taste great, but I always feel good afterward.

Every day. This is the one thing I can get my SAD husband to eat. (My husband is GREAT, it his diet that is SAD) We use kale and spirulina to alkalize and we both are enjoying beaucoup benefits.
Lyle is fun. I will go check out his website.

    Kevin,
Take a backseat, Kevin, and give Lyle the microphone!! He is a winner, smart, healthy, good looking and an excellent speaker. I look forward to hearing more from him in the future. You go, Lyle!!!

Smoothies for breakfast? Not always, but yes. Or for lunch. And, oh, yes, sometimes for dinner.

    Wow,
Just had this question with folks yesterday about kefir starter, thanks!
Yes every morning and sometimes afternoon smoothie, it is why I am still raw!! Especially the microalgae and kelp every day, keeps me free of cravings, lots of alkalizing low glycemic minerals and vegan protein, yay!!

Here is my Wild! green liver decongesting recipe :-)
Delicious high protein low glycemic alkalizing oxygenating hydrating RAW! Daily Smoothie idea for breakfast or snack:
4-6 cups or 4-6 large leaves of kale (or other dark green leafy vegetable (wild greens best!)
    FILL!! the blender with greens!)
1-2 bananas or 4-6 soaked dates, prunes
1-2 cup blueberries and or strawberries
Chlorella and or Spirulina powder (1 tsp – 2 tbsp, start small (1/4 tsp) with chlorella if just starting)
    1 tsp Kelp powder
    1 tsp Reishi Powder
1/2 cup soaked raw almonds/cashews (optional)
Fill after all ingredients added to 2/3 level with healthy water.
Blend on pulse, slow then high speed for at least 30 seconds, until thoroughly smoothied.
Drink as soon as possible, ideally immediately.
Besides Kale good choices are lamb’s quarters, nettles, wild lettuce, plantain, dandelion leaves, chard, arugula, water cress, spinach, etc.

The overall high greens keeps the entire mix low glycemic stabilizing blood sugar and keeps me totally satiated til way past noon. Doing this every morning for two years made my raw transition way easier this past Feb. And my first colonic my colonhydotherapist was amazed, said it looked like I had been getting them every month for years. All from the smoothies……

Kev, Jelly nuts is what they call young coconuts down on my farm in Belize. Just like the Eskimo have 100 names for ice and snow, the Kekchi Maya have nine differentiated stages of coconuts!!
Come down for the 35 day Maya Mountain Raw “Good Medicine” Healing Retreat in Feb 2011, details forthcoming……

I prefer my blue/green algae spirolina drink first thing in the morning to clean out and prep my intestine… then I do a green smoothy for lunch with another snack on the side.. then my main meal of the day at 3 pm and thats pretty well my regimen right now.. works great for me.

I drink green juice for brekkie: celery, cuke, lemon and ginger – refreshing! :)

Does the kefir eat up all the sugar in the coco water making it ok for low-glycemic diets i.e. Rainbow Green Phase 1?

omg – too cute! Love to see what our future smarties will act/look like! Thank the parents for such a responsibility to under take!

    you guys rock!

Thanks for answering my question about young jelly coconuts! I guess I can’t use them since they are so young they aren’t sweet yet, more grassy tasting.

I do smoothies for lunch rather than breakfast since I don’t want the loud blender to wake up the house. Love smoothies.

Definitely green smoothie every morning. I use a tablespoon or two of VitaMineral Green, natural vitamin C powder, some sunflower sprouts and green leaf of some kind (kale, chard, romaine, spinach), 1 banana and blueberries or strawberries, 1 T flax oil and sometimes MSM powder or Maca. Yummy!

    Thanks for answering my question!
I’m gonna try to add some fermented cashews and maybe crack open a pro-biotic capsule to add to the mix..

    One important issue though!
As far as I know, and according to “Dr. T”, from:
    http://www.ecopolitan.com/doctor-t

“Digestion destroys probiotics”, which means you won’t get the benefits of these good bacteria because they won’t survive the stomach juices..(unlike when you swallow a capsule, like the ones Dr Mercola sells, which are supposedly designed to survive the stomach juices and reach the gut safely..)

any clarifications would be much appreciated…

I rarely have a smoothie for breakfast. For one thing, I get up early and if I used the VitaMix that early, I would wake up my kids and for sure lose my morning “sanity time.” And that’s a risk I just can’t take. :) I prefer to have a nice green smoothie everyday after I do my run to replace nutrients and electrolytes. I make my post-workout smoothie using coconut water, frozen bananas and Vitamineral Green with some other fresh fruit thrown in.

I have a green smoothie pretty much every moornings. Sometimes I’ll skip a day or so, but I’m fairly consistent with it.
In fact, I am drinking one as I watch today’s video: thick slice of papaya, one big banana, big handful of spinach, bleuberries, spirulina, weathgrass, cayenne… hmmm. :D

every day and now so does my hubby, some greens mostly spinach, about a cup of frozen fruit or bananas and coconut water or filtered water and maybe some spiralina and flax oil. the best start to any day…

I often have a smoothie for breakfast. Not a big fan of green smoothies with sweet fruit, though I often include non-sweet fruit with my greens & sprouts (tomato, ripe sweet or hot peppers, cucumber, bitter melon, green papaya, green mango, occasionally olive), and love a little avocado in it for creaminess. I love them both, green or sweet, but not a big fan of them together. Same thing with juice; I don’t even like carrot or beet in my veggie juice. Just my taste.

OT, Micah, modern classification systems (3, 5, or 6 “kingdoms” have bacteria separate from plants and animals. Systems have changed!

Health and peace to all. Off to the kitchen to make live mango pudding & live hazelnut/red pepper pate for rawvioli filling (salt-massaged thin slices of pattypan squash). The live marinara’s already made.

being in a hot climate smoothies work great throughout the day whatever fresh fruit is best with whatever fresh greens – evening a raw vegetable soup made creamy with soaked walnuts or other nuts seasonings like ginger chile miso over sprouted and lightly cooked grain –

the k tec blender has made anything possible….and inspiration from listening to your daily offerings as well as all the other great links u have provided….blessings and gratitude!

weird, my previous post didn’t get published..
I’ll repeat my question in short:
Doesn’t the digestion destroy the good bacteria before it gets to the guts?
when it’s in capsule form, it is supposed to be protected and designed to reach the guts safely, but when you remove the capsule and just add it to the mix, I’m not sure whether you still get the benefits..

    Great show Kevin & Lyle.

I have a smoothie for breakfast every day. 95% of the time it is a green smoothie.
Although, sometimes I’m not hungry until around 11am. But, since it is my first meal of the day, I still call it breakfast.

I love making too much smoothie, and then having extra for lunch too.

We have our green smoothies for dinner..hubby and 2 young kids (they request them!!). By that time of day, it’s hard to get my kids to ‘eat’, so we do them at night and have some other ’snack’ with it. Surprisingly, (to me, anyway) my hubby prefers a lighter dinner too. :) )) You do great stuff guys, THANKS!

I have been having Kevin’s chia porridge for breakfast these past couple of weeks, since he described it. Love it — it helps stabilize blood sugar/blood pressure. Smoothies have been mostly lunch fare for me, 2 or 3 times a week. Then green juice mid afternoon.

    Hi Kevin,

I made some coconut kefir yesterday (waiting for it to be ready) however whole foods didn’t have body ecology kefir starter so i used yogourmet kefir starter, is that ok?

    the ingredients are:
lactic bacteria and yeasts and skim milk powder.

Should it not have the skim milk powder in it? will that go bad/rotten as its sitting at room temperature for 36 hours?

    thanks.

I’m a recent convert & loving it! I have had gut issues ever since Vietnam & various MDs have had me on a range of medications including Prilosec for the past 20 years. Researching the Internet led me to some frightening information & a decision to somehow get off the stuff. Enter Kevin & Smoothies. I now commence my day by juicing a raw potato & incl Chia & Flax seed soaked overnight, add a little Vanilla essence, 1/2 tspn Turmeric, tspn Barley Grass powder, a little Himalayan salt, Black Pepper then blend. I actually drink/eat down the entire potato rather than juice only. I’m more than happy to be able to say my new approach to diet with smoothies is working & I have not taken Prilosec for over six weeks!
