Can Fruit Strip Minerals From Your Body – The Renegade Health Show Episode #343

Today, I address if fruit can strip minerals from your body…

This question has come up plenty of times in the last couple of weeks, so it’s time to hammer it down.

I also run you through why the immune system can overreact and how that can be just as bad as and under-reaction. This is called a “cytokine storm”. Something that happens with viral infection like swine flu. Yikes!

Take a look…

Your question of the day: Fruit, little fruit, no fruit?

This is my typical day: 11 am: start sipping my 40-50 ounces of green veggie juice. 1 pm: maybe a pineapple. 3pm: maybe a cantaloupe or other melon. 4 pm: a couple of apples. 6 pm: a giant green salad with spirulina and nori.

Love the fruit! If I could eat it all day, everyday, I would! But I’ve found eating 1 fruit meal, 1 sweet green meal (green smoothie), and one savoury green meal (salad) a day helps balance things out so I don’t start bouncing off the walls. This concept of fruit stripping minerals is interesting. It makes it sound as if, as fruit goes through your body, it actually takes out more minerals than normal metabolic processes would. I would have thought it would just lead to demineralization from not consuming enough minerals to replace what you lose through standard metabolic processes.
When I’m eating lots of Omega 3 fats, I seem to be able to handle fruit better, too.

There are other raw foodist out there that write news letters, etc., that recommend a lot of fruit.

However, as much as I LOVE fruit, and have tried this way of eating, I found that I get lethargic and even developed Insulin Resistance! Cutting the amount of fruit way down, and going back to more greens and veggies eliminated the problems. As a Celiac, to get more calories I do what you mentioned, eat a little rice or sub grains like Amaranth, or a baked potato or yam. I don’t stress myself out because I am not 100% raw.

Its interesting how many diets are out there from the raw food gurus. Dr. Cousins says low sugar raw foods with plenty of greens is great for you. David Wolfe says eating plenty fatty raw foods are a great way to be healthy. Dr. Graham with the 80-10-10 diet says low fat and high fruit/sugar is great for you. Yet every single one of these guys live a very different life with a very different purpose meanwhile they all eat 100%raw foods. I think a quote in David Wolfes new superfood book sums it all up pretty good “eat according to your purpose.” There is a diet best for everyone it just so happens to be different for everyone making it very hard to give health advice.

i believe that fruits can strip minerals from the body if it HAS been grown in depleted soils, fruits in general are really good for you, and also a delicious treat to eat, especially the berries, berries as we all know have alot of health benefits so i dont believe that fruits should not be in our diet, good health is all about balance so i would definately keep fruits in my diet

    Little fruit
Yes, fruits(and grains) can strip minerals if they are consumed in excess. I actually developed dental cavities and tooth ache by eating too many fruits. They are also very addictive.

In my opinion, it is hard to know if you need sugar or if you are addicted to it. Rats that were injected(not fed) with sugar had been shown to develop tooth decay.

After a few days of cutting back on fruits and grains, you will know that you were addicted to sugar. My cavities that were visible were also healed.

well you know me kevin, i’m into fruit, i eat 2 fruit meals and one veggie meal everyday. when we look at the majority of rainforest creatures, most of them are frugavores…eating at least 60% fruit (any food with the seed INSIDE) i also eat a lot of sprouts.

david talks about absorbing minerals thru the skin, and why its important to lie down on the earth, especially rocks. i spend at least 20 minutes laying on boulders.

loren lockman talks about how perfectly natural fruit is, smells good, looks good, tastes good…easy to harvest (often just falls off the tree…grows wild in nature. veggies on the other hand are more cultivated, not as “easy”.

interesting points. when i’m in the states i eat greens, when i’m in the rainforest, i eat fruit!

Yes balance is the key, according to your needs.I need high calories to retain my weight so I use richer fruit and vegies in my day.I use coconut water or coconut milk in my smoothies or fruit juice with, figs, cashews, bananas, mangoes, honey and include a superfood like bee pollen or hempseeds. It usually makes about 2litres.Then later on in the day I make a huge salad with greens on the bottom with like a avocodo goulash to go on top with everything in it.Like avocodos, kelp flakes, dulse, garlic, onions, tomatoes, mushrooms, cucumbers, olive oil,lemon/lime fresh squeezed, sea salt and cayenne pepper. So I do keep my fruit meal and salad meal at different times.Maybe for snacks in between meals I will have nuts, seeds or dried fruit on there own.I think if you add mineral rich foods to every meal you don`t need to worry about loosing some.Drink your green juices or smoothies.Try some phytoplankton mix it in your water. With all the superfoods available just pick the the top five or ten or more like David Wolfe says and you will be doing great! Thanks Kevin for being awesome!Always great advice!Keeping it real,Tammy!

Not much fruit for me….i JUST read that you should not combine avacado with nuts and i am very excited because i tried it tonight and FINALLY did not have gas after my big green salad with avacado and left out the walnuts. Yayyy! and you are right; when i feel gassy; i feel “flatulant” towards everything and just want to go hide in my room.

  20. Maria Shere
    11:03 pm on July 2nd, 2009

I agree that balance is the key. I have, at times, eaten large daily quantities fruit and felt benefitted by that. But, at other times my teeth became sensitive and old hypoglycemic symptoms re-appeared, especially when I have done this for too long a period of time.

When I am operating out of awareness, I try to pay attention to what my needs are at the time. Sometimes eating a large amount of fruit is healing and cleansing for me, sometimes it pushes me past my point of balance.

Paying attention to one’s body signals is best. I try to eat for where my body chemistry lies, the situation I am in and the work I have to do.

yay BALANCE! I think we want that panacea SO badly, we hear something is good for you, so we go all the way (soy anyone?), Then we hear it’s BAD for you, so we cut it out entirely. Only your body knows. Just read Greens for Life, and Boutenko points out that, while we see chimps in pictures always eating bananas, they actually eat tons of greens. That being said, they still eat fruit, they just might wrap it in a leaf, for example. This is important to think about in terms of super foods too. We hear about the newest, herb or berry, then start chowing down on it. However, often these superfoods have been traditionally used in small quatities. Worth considering given that some of them affect our hormones (maca). That doesn’t mean DON’T take it, just use your head!!!

I was boulimic for 17 years in my life ( from age 14 to 31)

Yes, as so many people have mentioned, balance. If you want a universal truth, surely that is it? So many theories are constantly put forward and then disproven, reproven, etc, etc and many with commercial motivations. Maintaining balance is one way to mediate this effect.

On an unrelated point, I accidentally deleted your mail yesterday with the link to grounding technology. I wonder if you could repost that. Thanks greatly.

All fruit all the time! Greens when I have a taste for them during certain times of the year. Overt fats… very little, perhaps half an avocado once in a while. Now, during the summer, I eat fruit. During the other parts of the year, I add some greens. This seems natural to me. And recent bloodwork tests confirm… I’m at the healthiest I’ve been my entire life, so something must be working :)

    Avoid extremes?

    Don’t agree at all.

Balance is being politically correct. You don’t need balance, just need whatever your body is asking for.

You want average health? Then go for balance. You want optimal, best health? Go for what’s right and true – not balance.

You can eat as much fruit as you want and do great. If you need more of anything your body will naturally seek it. You’ll want to eat greens. I believe if you listen to your body it will guide you. But you have to be able to hear it.

Trying to do all this balancing and complicated lists of meal plans and recipes is crazy IMHO. It can drive some people crazy too and push them away from eating raw and healthy by making it too complicated. So many I talk to say it’s way too complicated because that’s how most in this field present it. That’s a shame because it’s sooo simple if you do it naturally.

We don’t need all these supplements, super foods, specialty foods, complex raw recipes… just need to enjoy as much fruit (and veggies) as we can naturally.

But we can’t unless you let your body experience the freedom you get from eating simple fruits and veggies … mono meals. Have a lunch of 2-3 cantaloupe. Have a breakfast of a bunch of oranges. Have a dinner of cucumbers and tomatoes (almost mono!). Simple and delicious.

Once you get to this point you can listen to your body easily. If you’re messing with supplements, super foods and complex raw meals you literally can’t listen for signals from your body (or get the wrong signals). When you simplify you can and then do what is best for your body. And most often the signals are loud and clear and come fast if you’re clean.

Of course most in the business (raw/health business) won’t go there because there is no money in it. If you can’t sell supplements, super foods, etc, how do you make money? Right folks?

Swine flu (made up), immune system overeactions, etc, etc?

This is only for folks that aren’t eating a natural diet. When you clear your body of all the mess we’ve put in and get to the point where you can eat mostly mono meals, you are in balance and you listen to your body for what it needs. Viruses, germs, reactions don’t affect you because your body is clean and in top condition to heal and ward off anything naturally… like it’s meant to do. No need to overcompensate and take any supplements, special foods, go on any complicated diets or be overly concerned about anything. Life is really good when you make it simple.

Seek the truth and it will find you. Enjoy!

Rawsome post Kevin! You are so right, it is important to find the right balance. I’ve seen too many people subscribe to one person’s ideas and they lose sight as to what works best for them. We are all pioneers in the “Living Food Revolution” and we should all be open to listen to everyone’s thoughts and most importantly how it feels to us. The fruit issue is a “hot” topic with so many people. I have seen amazing positive health changes in people just adding green smoothies to their diets. When they see these surprising improvements in their health in just a few short weeks they get excited about adding more raw foods to their diet and they don’t feel the normal deprivation from making a dietary change.

Green smoothies work so well because of the combination of fruits with the greens giving the body the right balance of vitamins from the fruit and minerals from the greens. All those gorillas can’t be wrong! According to Jane Goodall, primates have been making burritos with fruit and greens long before we figured it out! I just wrote a post on “Diabetes and Fruit”, you can check it out at http://www.reneoswald.com/blog

I’ve noticed that most people crave fruits in the morning and mainly greens, veggies and nuts for lunch and dinner. This makes sense biologically, because fruits are cleansing and should be consumed first for ideal digestion.

To Arianne, I’ve seen amazing results for food addictions with EFT—check out some of the posts on youtube!

Hope you and Annmarie had a fantastic time at the wedding!

Too any fruits make me bloated and really gassy. I like to stick to fresh and frozen organic berries because they make me feel the best. Very low fat made me feel like crap and yes I did it for 7 yrs. Once I a passed out and I just kept getting weaker. Now I eat more fat and greens with and balance it with non hybrid fruit. The middle path has always worked.. always! Individuals who take extremes damage themselves and are constantly obsessed with the many dogmas within raw food. Be your own guru. Chill out and look at the past civilizations who lived the longest. Eat, Live, and be Happy. This is the simplest formula for overall health and longevity.

love fruit – the season for nutritious fruit is short and i try to eat local fruit whenever possible – obviously in the Midwest it is a challenge. We are close to Michigan so blueberries and cherries will require a road trip. Thank goodness for the awesome Farmers Markets! My garden is filled with yummy greens – lots of kale and spinach and beets. I love the beet greens (and beets too). Unfortunatley, the lettuce is bolting but we had plenty of good salads and I’ll replant the greens too!

So I like to be balanced. As usual great show!

Could you explain how too much fruit can actually strip minerals from the body? Where does it strip the minerals from?

Whether or not minerals are extracted and assimilated by the body is dependent on the strength or weakness of the digestive juices, which can be measured by the pH of the urine.

I think Mike has the right idea. Eat for your own purpose and and your own body needs. Not everyones body hanindles things the same. I have a genetic liver disorder which prohibits me from processing most sugars natural or otherwise so I allow myself 1 fruit a day and add it to my veggie juice to make it taste good or I eat it for desert. Freida, if I remember correctly my trainer told me that when I was respirating amonia it was because my body was using protein for energy and amonia was the by-product of that. He told me to increase my carbohydrate intake to stop that from happening. Are you eating alot of tofu and beans (protein)??

  40. Cathy
    1:21 pm on July 3rd, 2009

Kevin, I don’t think I agree with you that fruit will ’strip’ minerals from the body. Fruit is too alkaline for that. Fruit may not provide as many minerals as green leafy vegetables and Brassicaceae like broccoli, but that’s not the same thing as stripping minerals from the body. One might (and I stress might)become mineral difficient on a all fruit diet IF the fruit were grown in poor quality soil, but that would be true of greens grown in poor soil as well. The only thing I know that will actively strip minerals from the body is excessive amounts of protein. Protein digestion creats an acid enviroment (from high levels of amino acids) which causes the body to strip calcium and phosphorus from the bones to maintain alkalinity. I would be interested in where you got your information, as I am always interested in increasing my nutritional knowledge.

    Hi
The answer to the question about tha ammonia smell , well it is your muscle mass breaking down , as in muscle wasting ..They call it ketosis …I t usually happens when you adrenal glands are not functioning properly..As when the y are not working properly they put out to much cortisol which contributes to musle wasting ,high cortisol is caused from to much stresses on the body, either from nutritional stress , environmental , emmotional/mental and not enough sleep…

There’s also the question of whether the fruit being consumed is ripe or not, and what conditions it was grown in (which affect the nutritional composition). I’m inclined to believe (although I have no evidence to back this up), that an ‘optimum’ fruit – i.e. one grown in perfect conditions, not hybridized to make it too sugary and perfectly ripe when consumed – would not take anything out of the body. I bet that only foods that are out of balance in some way deplete the body when eaten. That’s my theory.
It’s a good question to bring up and I like your stance that balance is the key and extremes are undesirable, Kevin.
    Another great show.

I’ve just been to Brian Clement’s lecture here in London saying that all our (imported) tropical fruits are acidic because they are not picked ripe (it’s impossible due to transport), so he advised us to avoid any fruits that are not local and ripe picked. Makes a lot of sense to me.

If you live in sunny California (and there’s not many places on earth like that), you can do fantastic with eating only fruit- it is ripe, meaning alkaline, and full of sunshine energy. But this diet would make people sick in many other places…

Raw food reflexes? Hmmm. I guess Obama and Serena and Venus Williams all eat raw food. Their reflexes are amazing.

Love this advice from Erich Schiffman. I am paraphrasing. When you have a choice to make, in this case, about food. Pause, ask, listen, and choose. As we become more centered, still, and conscious, the best choice will be revealed and even glow with light. So whether the choice is between a bannana, kale, or a new career seek the light!

Sound too far out. Eat with the seasons and locally. Nature grows what we need.

Since eating more raw, my fruit intake has increased from practically zero to a moderate consumption. At least it’s an improvement. :)

Ariane: As for hypnosis, yes it works very well for addictions like smoking and overeating/food issues. Some people have had amazing results. You could go to a competent hypnotist or learn how to do self-hypnosis through books, online, tapes, etc..

When I was a teenager I unknowingly did a powerful self-hypnotic suggestion right before going to bed. I asked myself to change the color of my eyes. It did happen and unfortunately I also got black lips and general malaise to go along with it the very next day. One of my friend’s mother was a nursing student so she researched a possible medical explanation and came up with it being a toxic reaction. Coincidence?

Thanks for your message today. It seems to encourage living a well-balanced life. I believe when we listen to our bodies, they will tell us what is good and what is not good for us as individuals. Why bloat oneself with a what makes us feel rotten? It seems to mean we are becoming “rotten” from the inside out. “Explosive” was the word Kevin used. Good one.

Omega-3s (essential fatty acids) can be found in flax and hemp seeds, walnuts, avocados, first pressed, extra virgin olive oil; blue berries, goji berries are some yummy helps, When I eliminate all dairy, greasy foods and all white, processed foods, I’m one happy camper. Thanks for the show! Raw vegans need this info! Indeed, the work of dental pioneer Weston A. Price determined that the health of bones and teeth is dependent on carefully balanced blood sugar. Eating a lot of fruit obviously creates blood sugar swings.

According to Cure Tooth Decay: Heal and Prevent Cavities with Nutrition, Dr. Melvin Page, DDS and anthropologist Leon Abrams believe that it takes just a 25% imbalance of body chemistry to cause teeth to decay. After 30 years of research and 40,000 blood tests, Dr. Page discovered that a disturbance in the ratio of calcium to phosphorus in the blood causes tooth decay and gum disease. Most importantly, they found that a ratio of 8.75mg of calcium to 3.5mg of phosphorus per 100cc of blood, with normal blood sugar levels of 85mg per 100cc of blood creates immunity to tooth decay. When this ratio deviated or when blood sugar levels grew too high or low, they found that minerals were withdrawn from the dentin and bone to compensate, resulting in tooth decay.

Vegans, especially fruitarians, notoriously have dental problems. And, we have known for decades that dental problems are not caused by acids, food or bacteria on the teeth per se, but rather by blood sugar imbalances, lack of fat soluble vitamins (A,D, E and K) and resulting mineral deficiencies that eating a lot of sweet foods (like fruit) causes. Without fat soluble vitamins, you can’t use the minerals you eat. And without normal blood sugar, you can’t keep the minerals you’ve absorbed.

Raw vegans often get plenty of minerals, but without enough Vitamins A, D, E and K, (especially D), you just pee most of them out. Raw vegans, especially low-fat raw vegans, often do not get enough fat soluble vitamins. Vegans should have their Vitamin D levels checked because sunshine is not always enough depending on your genetics, your geographical latitude, the time of year, and the type of skin pigment you have. Supplementation might be necessary. Finally, keeping steady, even blood sugar is the final key to the optimal mineral levels puzzle, and the secret to healthy teeth.

I highly recommend Cure Tooth Decay by Ramiel Nagel. More info on this issue on my blog http://www.smallfootprintfamily.com/?p=711

    Hi Kevin

Just catching up on your videos as have just got back from Turkey where a friend had their birthday party.Wonderful time had by all.

I hate to be the one to tell you this Swine flu is a scam. Our immune systems can deal with this if flu arrives. The shot makes you sick not the other way around. In fact all shots are very very bad for any human being.

Vacines are more poisonous than the illness. Check out http://www.educate-yourself.org
or http://www.targetnews.com ( Mike Adams is a health food guru)

Happy reading., no need to put this on your website. You are promoting good health
but should be aware of what is going on.

Hi there , the answer to the question of the person working out alot , well I do work out alot , as in weights , walk , ride bike , yoga , cardio etc…I do eat lots of fruit , now the key is to eat very low fats or some days none at all . You can eat a high fruit consumption only if your fat intake is low ..The fat in the diet is the culprit for the overgrowth of candida ..If you were to remove the fats for a few days ,the candida will die down to a balanced level.. Hope this helps ..

How can fruit, a food group RICH in minerals, deplete the body of minerals? This is a HUGE misconception.

I read that REFINED sugars deplete the body of minerals (due to their lack of nutrients besides calories).

Fruits are vitamin rich, mineral rich, fiber rich, phytonutrient rich, water rich and are much better for your health than eating complex carbohydrates.

Hey, don’t take my word for it. Do the research yourself and you’ll see that eating fruits to supply your body with energy makes MORE sense than eating flavorless and inferior grains and starches.

My mentor Dr. Jensen recommended 2 Fruit p/day, 6 Vegetables, 1 Protein, 1 Carb.
Now this wasn’t a raw food quota, but the reason was to establish an 80% alkaline diet.

So as long as you have 3x the amount of alkaline vegetables to fruits, your minerals should be in the range of balance.

    Also, variety is key.

Thanks Kevin, your shows are Fantastic.!
