We haven’t seen every single video after you started your travels, but we haven’t heard any more about using vegetable oil to run your Kale Whale. Did that ever work out?

Kevin,
Thanks for all the work you are doing.
1) 90 days 98% raw vegan and less 37 lbs.
2) I need a idea for electrolyte replacement during my long runs. I am training for a 50 mile training run and I use coconut water for the after run but I need to carry something to mix in to the water for while on the run. Any ideas????? I want to stay away from the gatorade type drinks….

Good info Kevin, so important to know where the food and products you consume come from. My question is regarding cholestrol,HDL/LDL- what is the real range it should be at and what vitimans and minerals keep it where it needs to be?

Hi Kevin & Annmarie,
Have you ever heard of Thermolon cookware or silicon bakeware, & what do you think about them? What are your recommendations for cookware, everyday dishes, & food storage containers? I have corelle dishes & bowls that I’ve used for years & thought they were pretty safe until I read that they are coated in a lead glaze. I also have a lot of plastic food containers, but don’t really know what else to use that’s safe. Or does it really matter since your food is in them for such a short time? Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks. Cindy

You mentioned you were getting tests done last week. I am always hearing get vitamin D tested or that tested, and to make sure to use a certain lab. I actually started a list for when I go in next. What are all the things we should get bloodwork done on. I hate western medicine, so I want to have my ducks in a row when I go in so I can get the most out of it.
8:25 pm on June 4th, 2009
Kevin,
The answer to that question is much simpler. Soy is too high in protein and contains salt. High protein causes cancer and salt is poison as it inhibits enzyme activity.

I’m with the rest of the Floridians, when will you be here? My question is: How do you get over the really strong sugar cravings? I grew up with lots of sugar and white flour, how do I get away from them after 53 years? Love your shows! Keep up the great work you do! I love getting new recipes from Anne Marie!

Right now my most pressing question would be about my husband’s psoriasis.
He’s on Day 6 of giving up nightshades and already seeing some improvement (he’s had this condition for 30 years, he’s 54 years old). He’s been high raw now for a couple of months.
Do you have advice about *curing* psoriasis (as we’ve been told there’s no cure)? He’s ready to go on P1 of Garbriel Cousens program as he believes this may be candida related…?
Thanks a lot!

Some types of soy sauce are known carcinogens now that have been pulled from UK shelves, but still being sold in USA:

Soy and Brain Damage
By John D. MacArthur
“Tofu Shrinks Brain!” Not a science fiction scenario, this sobering soybean revelation is for real. But how did the “poster bean” of the ’90s go wrong? Apparently, in many ways — none of which bode well for the brain.
In a major ongoing study involving 3,734 elderly Japanese-American men, those who ate the most tofu during midlife had up to 2.4 times the risk of later developing Alzheimer’s disease. As part of the three-decade long Honolulu-Asia Aging Study, 27 foods and drinks were correlated with participants’ health. Men who consumed tofu at least twice weekly had more cognitive impairment, compared with those who rarely or never ate the soybean curd. [1,2]
“The test results were about equivalent to what they would have been if they were five years older,” said lead researcher Dr. Lon R. White from the Hawaii Center for Health Research. For the guys who ate no tofu, however, they tested as though they were five years younger.
What’s more, higher midlife tofu consumption was also associated with low brain weight. Brain atrophy was assessed in 574 men using MRI results and in 290 men using autopsy information. Shrinkage occurs naturally with age, but for the men who had consumed more tofu, White said “their brains seemed to be showing an exaggeration of the usual patterns we see in aging.”

I seem have read something else also on the adverse affects of soy on the females thyroid gland with longer term use… as well as it causing calcium leakage in older womans bones..
then of course there is the entire monsanto GMO soy issue.. majority of soya beans now are GMO seed sourced…
SOY? Pass… it’s not the miracle dairy replacement everyone makes it out to be, many many vegetarians use soya products up here in Canada.
I do use some small amounts of organic soya sauce as a flavoring agent, but thats about it for me an soy.

Do you wash your produce in anything other than water? I read that parasites are an issue (not dirt). What’s your take on this?
I use a mix of GSE and sea salt mixed into water.
Also, it sounds like you’ve had experience with transparent teeth. What did you do about this exactly to restore the solid color to your teeth???
Thanks.

My most pressing question (which I asked once before and never saw answered, so forgive me if you did) is what exists in the world of contraception for raw vegans that is not toxic, or has moral issues (for some- as an example, an IUD). Thanks!

Kevin! (& Annemarie)
I’ve been eating mostly raw foods for eight months. After three weeks my skin started breaking out. I attributed it to detox and thought it would eventually go away, but now eight months down the road it has gotten worse (granted, I quit birth control a few months ago and my hormones are probably out of whack). Can you address some different acne cures, ointments, foods, etc. Thank you! <3 you both.

really liked your E-book High Raw and thanks for giving it away. I really appreciate that you care about your audience including me. I have found it very useful to ask myself the questions you give as ways to help transition. I hear the question you wrote in my head when I am going around the store, resturant and places…What would a raw foodist do or eat? When I went to my son’s middle school celebration today…it was grilled hotdogs, potatochips and little debbie cookies with soda. There wasn’t one raw or natural food source in site! It is so easy to start looking at food and thinking dead dead dead or alive…and then all the packaging, the garbage…it is so much easier and simpler to eat raw. I thought I would dread the change but, I am actually enjoying it. Thanks for your weekly instructions and information that help with the small but, critical to my health changes.

Do you ever hear of anyone growing new teeth or a third set of teeth?
9:29 pm on June 4th, 2009
Kevin, I keep hearing what you don’t eat , what DO you eat. I love it when Angela Stokes and others report what she eats . It gives me ideas and often I get confused about how much. For -instance Matt said the other day he only had one small meal all day long, I would faint if I did that. can’t be good for the digestive system. Norman Walker says we don’t need much food. Now I’m starting to think My smoothies are too many calories. So there it is confused about amounts that are healthy and still need to come to the normal body weight. And ideas as what to eat. Teri

Hi Kevin (& AnneMarie)!
My most pressing question/s is about… Dental difficulties!
I have been eating high to 100 percent raw for going on 6 months now, and love it! But, the one challenge I’ve had is with my teeth (in ways that I’ve never encountered before). Before going raw, the only dental problem I ever had was some slightly bleeding gums when flossing. I’ve been so pleased to find that this has completely gone away since going raw, but, for the first time I’ve been dealing with other symptoms… On more than one occasion now, and often lasting for a week or more, I’ve had strange throbbing pain in just my two to four top front teeth — it’s really scared me, as sometimes they’ve even felt loose! I’ve cut back almost completely on citrus, and if I have other acidic foods, such as Kombucha, I drink it with a straw. I also now use Uncle Harry’s tooth soap and gum oil as well as his alkalizing remineralization powder. This has helped, the pain hasn’t come back (so far), but now I also have what appears to be a sort of gray-colored discoloration/staining on my top front teeth?! I thought it might be “transparency” at first, but I’m getting PLENTY of minerals, and on closer examination, it really looks more like some sort of stain. But, I have never seen anything like it before going raw, I have no idea what’s causing it, or what natural remedies I could use to remove it or whiten my teeth….?? Also, what exactly did you do to correct your teeth becoming transparent (besides adding more mineral rich foods to your diet)? Are there any particular tooth brushes, floss, techniques (such as oil pulling) etc. that you recommend? Why is it SUCH a common problem (it seems) for super health conscious raw foodists to have so many dental problems (esp. only after going raw)?? Thanks SO much for your help with this, Kevin!

What fruits or vegetables are the best sources of protein?
10:55 pm on June 4th, 2009
I’d like to get off of bioidentical hormones amd thyroid pills, but am afraid to just stop them since all my symptoms might come back. I’ve just recently started a high raw diet; are there particular things I should eat more of or avoid?
11:10 pm on June 4th, 2009
Liana,
My recommendation is that you test your (urine) pH.
You can buy strips at your local pharmacy or order on-line.
My bet is that you are acidic. If this is the case:
You need to alkalize your diet.
(I know this from experience.)

Cindy,
In regards to the salt comment.
Salt is essential for life – you cannot live without it. However, most people simply don’t realize that there are enormous differences between the standard, refined table and cooking salt and healthy NATURAL/PURE SALT.
These differences can have a major impact on your staying healthy, or increasing your risk of health challenges you want to avoid.
If you want your body to function properly, you need whole liquid colloidal salt complete with all-natural elements. Today’s common table salt is a poison that has nothing in common with natural liquid colloidal salt.
Most common table salt is made up of chemicals that pollute your body and wreak havoc on your health.
PURE SALT contains NO toxins and all 84 minerals and elements necessary for your optimal health! Here are some examples to name but a few:
1) Regulating the water content throughout your body.
2) Balancing excess acidity from your cells, particularly your brain cells.
3) Balancing your blood sugar levels and helping to reduce your aging rate.
4) Assisting in the generation of hydroelectric energy in cells in your body.
5) Absorption of food particles through your intestinal tract.
6) Help in clearing mucus plugs and phlegm from your lungs – particularly useful in asthma and cystic fibrosis.
7) Help in clearing mucus and phlegm from your sinus reversing sinusitis.
9) Prevention of muscle cramps.
10) Making the structure of your bones firm – osteoporosis can occur when your body needs more salt and takes it from your bones.
11) Preventing varicose veins and spider veins on your legs and thighs.
12) Stabilizing irregular heartbeats – in conjunction with water it is actually essential for the regulation of your blood pressure.
13) Regulating all your endocrine system and buffering acidic hormones from glandular function.
What remains after typical salt is ‘chemically cleaned’ is sodium chloride – an unnatural chemical form of salt that your body recognizes as something completely foreign.
This is important as over 90% of the money that people spend on food is for processed food.

I took your advice (from High Raw) and had blood work done. Everything looked good except the doc said I needed to start taking 1000 mg. of Vit. D as I was low. I am confused about that as I live in the desert and have so much sun during the year…how does that happen? Only been raw 7 weeks. Also, my cholesterol was 50 HDL and 105 LDL. I am no longer consuming bad cholesterol, how can it be so much higher than my good cholesterol?
11:53 pm on June 4th, 2009
My most pressing question:
After reading your ebook I decided to get some testing done at the MD’s office. Due to our benefits everything was free so I decided to do everything. (cholesterol, bloodsugar, thyroid and bloodpressure) Since I eat a mostly vegetarian and high raw diet I decided to get my iron and B12 checked as well. Everything was normal to excellent.
A while ago I had a flare up of candida (thrush). I decided to do the candida diet for a while, supplements plus a couple of colonics. The colonhydrotherapist has over 30 years of experience and I’m glad that I went. She also practices iridology but according to her findings a lot was “wrong” with me. I searched the web about iridology and there is a lot of controversial information out about it. I also read that iridology is subject to interpretation rather then facts. What is your opinion about this?
11:55 pm on June 4th, 2009
I’ve heard Matt Monarch recommend eating only two small meals a day. I worked with a woman that got very ill (she almost died) eating vegetarian because she wasn’t eating properly. If one eats very little how do you know you are getting the proper nutrition?
11:58 pm on June 4th, 2009
Hi Kevin,
I have asked this question before. It would be great if you can answer this question.
My most pressing question is “How can I get more protein from eating raw food?” I’m 5’2″ and I weight 94lb. According to my naturopath, I should weight at least 100lb. And he is trying to convince me not to go 100% raw, even though he and I both know that my digestion has greatly improved from eating a 100% raw food diet.
I’ve tried to drink hemp protein powder drink and eat more nuts and seeds, and add hemp seed and coconut oil to my diet. But my weight did not go up at all, and if I forgot to consume enough of those food, my weight would immediately go down.
If my weight go any lower, it will start to affect areas of my body. I don’t want to have good digestion but an unhealthy body. Please help.
Quinny

Hi Kevin,
Today was the first time I’ve watched your show. I really like it! I am still exploring my diet and what my body likes (or dislikes) and I am struggling a little bit to make the transition
Anyway, my question is, how many times does a person on a raw diet (or even vegan) have to eat a day in order to get sufficient amounts of protein, vitamins, and minerals? Should a person supplement?
12:09 am on June 5th, 2009
I loved your book btw and your shows! I have been sooo interested in health and raw foods for the last 3 years. I read books and am obsessed with health. I’d love to get education and certification on this new age type information but because it goes against the “norm” and is new, I find it difficult to find a good legit place to study!! What would you suggest? The Hippocrates Institute, or Living Light look good but they are oooo expensive! Anything in the North East thats legitimate and offers cooking maybe as well?? Know any experts that want some apprentices?!!? haha
Thanks and keep up the good work!!

More on soy: According to Gabriel Cousens, M.D., M.D.H., D.D., who has done a lot of food research, soy is a mineral DEPLETING food. We do not want to deplete our minerals; their delicate balance generates our electrical energy at the cellular level, and most people these days are already deficient in at least one or two of the major minerals (like calcium or iron), and many more of the trace minerals (like chromium and vanadium, which are essential to proper pancreatic function as well as healthy vision). As Kevin said, fermented soy products are not as problematic, but all the refined soy products (e.g. textured vegetable protein, meat and dairy substitutes) haven’t been around long enough for extensive research, and phytoestrogens can be a problem for hormone balance. I always tolerated soy well (probably because my baby formula was made of it, before my mother’s Ob/Gyn had her switch me to formula made of goat milk), but only ate fermented soy in my teens and twenties, and never in great quantity. The new soy products did not make their appearance until far more recently. And, as Kevin so aptly pointed out, we in the West often make the mistake of “if a little is good for me, a lot would be great!” One great way to use soy is for crop rotation and renewing soil when transitioning to organic gardening or farming. Plant soy on the fallow field. When it’s mature, turn it over into the soil (don’t harvest it, just turn it). Since this is supposed to restore the soil, I found it surprising when Gabriel advised that it’s mineral depleting, but of course, soil and bodies are not identical! Health and peace to all. Let’s share all the information we have.

Hey!
I love working out…but since starting to eat raw I am losing some weight, which is a bit scary because I am already pretty thin. So, my question is…what type of raw foods would be the best for me to eat in order to keep my highly active lifestyle?
2:21 am on June 5th, 2009
Hi Kevin and AnneMarie,
I do have a question. I’ve been dealing with this since, working at going raw over a year ago. I am a Recovering ED person and have been abstinent for over 14 years. Since, attempting to go Raw/Vegan I have found myself more obsessed then ever. I’ve been having “purging thoughts” when I eat non-raw. I don’t act out but, I haven’t had those thoughts in years. I probably will benefit reading your “High Raw” book. I have been fighting Candida and Have a Sweet tooth. “Surprise” lol!
I really would like to find balance. I feel best when I’m 100% Raw and Low-Fat. But, when I give into a pancake w/hubby or a mocha or something usually when I”m with non-raw people “peer pressure?” is when I will beat myself up afterwards and feel guilty and possible get an ED thought. I have been on a Raw-Vegan Forum for over a year and am on it everyday. I wonder if I should back off and just live? I haven’t been working out like I usually do “Daily” and that affects me too. I feel so much better when I do and feel more in control.
So, all that said (sorry) my question would be:
Have you helped anyone else with this similar problem or have any advice on helping me find Balance and Strength in order to stay Raw/Vegan in any situation for myself or just accept and be High Raw?
Any thoughts, feedback or input will be appreciated.
Thank you
Jennifer

What are your thoughts on enemas? I know you did a show on colonics, but can doing enemas at home be beneficial as well, if one doesn’t have access to colon hydrothery? And what do you have to say about coffee/salt/wheatgrass enemas?
3:07 am on June 5th, 2009
HI Kevin,
I loved that you mentioned “transparent teeth”. I am currently having that experience, so I too am interested in knowing what would you do to rebuild the enamel or turn it around. I have been a Raw food Vegan for about 4 years now…my teeth were not the greatest before I became a Raw foodie, but they haven’t really improved much…I don’t use abrasive toothpastes, I use tooth soap and try to keep my mouth as alkaline & clean as possible after eating. I also still have a couple of mercury fillings I haven’t had removed yet…could this be part of the imbalance?
3:14 am on June 5th, 2009
hei from norway!
thanks for alwais inspiring me to continue to go hay raw! thanks for the ebook:))
My qyestion is about colon irrigation(enema) at home:i do in the morming with seesalt and coffe apr. 1,5-2l ann in the evening with camomilla tea.
I was “shocked” when I heared Victoria Boutenko said that idea of detox is insane. One should use greans and all body will detox naturally. One need not to do special detox.I’m confused now.
have been 100% raw since april this year.

have a wanderful time in festival.I’ll be
glad to see and here reports and continue to keep growing…

Hi Annmarie and Kevin,
First, thanks for the e-book. Red it and you wrote down my thoughts in 99% of the book.
I have an issue that I’m not from USA. I’m from Croatia, Europe. That causes that I feel envy lots of times you use something that isn’t at hand in my region. I know that you can’t live your livess the way I do, but it would be a great thing to mention once in a while when there is substitute for some food or something else.
Otherwise, keep up the good work. You gave me self-confidence so I think I become actually the first raw chef in Croatia. I hold workshops, educate and make a meals for people and they love it. Thank you for that.
I send you love from Croatia

Hi Kevin, hi Annmarie,
I was wonder how you calculate the raw %. Is it based on the calorie intake or just the volume/weight????
Thank you

Well, while I am at it: Do you know anything about if raw food can help with hiperthyroidism ??

Hi,
I would love to know your opinion about liver cleansings. How does drinking a glass of olive oil!!! goes along with that eating too much fat is not good for you. I feel very repulsed by the idea to consume such a huge amount of fat in those liver cleanses. I guess I will rather try the coffee enemas but am not sure if there is a difference in effectiveness in these two approaches????
I also would love you to talk about MMS.
someone mentioned it in a post response to your show about how to prepare for a pandemic, I looked it up and found it very interesting.
Do you know anything about it???
How about an interview with Jim Humble?
I have to agree with the person you referred to in this show that her/his questions do not seem to get through to you, I also posted several without ever getting any answer!!!!!
I think the idea you once had to create a special place only for questions was great and would be very much appreciated!!!!so they would not be spread all over your different places, blogs, forums etc. and get lost.
To the women with the acne problem, while dealing with hormonal balance, colon cleansing etc. to clear and heal the skin, a great help from the outside for the meanwhile is green healing earth (I do not know how it is called in USA) mixed with some water, a little bit of honey and some good oil and than put on to your face for 10-15 Min. at least twice a week helps to reduce or clear acne in most cases.
If you are daring you can also put some of your own urine onto your skin before putting the mask on (especially if the pustules are really infected). than you wash it all together of
hope that helps
Blessings from Germany

Hi Kevin and Annmarie,
I too have a thyriod difficulty and tried cutting back on my prescription med. however it back fired on me and I have returned to taking the full dose. I am still raw which I believe is extremely helpful in maintaining good overall health and keeping my thyriod functioning as best it can. I would like to know if there are alternative meds. that are less manufactured and if there are supplements that can be taken to help the prescription meds. work to their full potential?

For Jasmine (on 6/4) re: acne solutions
First I’m wondering if you’re 100% raw. If not, I remember reading in David Wolfe’s book, “Eating For Beauty” to make sure you avoid peanuts. And he said that many models eat cucumbers since it’s great for the skin. I eat them everyday plain or in my salad.
I break out if my diet is too high in fat. I calculate my percentage of fat calories using nutridiary.com and shoot for 10-12% calories from fat as recommended by the 80/10/10 raw food diet. So for me it comes down to my flax oil/avocado based salad dressing and possibly 7-8 almonds daily. The rest of my day is green smoothies with no fat.
I found diet to be the primary factor, but I also use “DDF glycolic exfoliating wash” which is highly recommended for acne on Sephora.com.

Soy is very much a concern especially with the genetically modified version. I have done some research on it and it really is not suitable for a raw diet unless using the fermented products.
http://www.healingdaily.com/detoxification-diet/soy.htm
is a good resource for information and says
“Soy – more negatives than positives
I feel the positive aspects of the soybean are overshadowed by their potential for harm. Soybeans in fact contain a large number of dangerous substances. We already mentionned “phytic acid”, also called “phytates”. This organic acid is present in the bran or hulls of all seeds and legumes, but none have the high level of phytates which soybeans do. Phytic acid blocks the body’s uptake of essential minerals like magnesium, calcium, iron and especially zinc. Adding to the high phytate problem, soybeans are highly resistant to phytate-reducing techniques, such as long, slow cooking.
Soybeans also contain potent enzyme-inhibitors. These inhibitors block uptake of trypsin and other enzymes which the body needs for protein digestion. Normal cooking does not de-activate these harmful antinutrients, which can cause serious gastric distress, reduced protein digestion and can lead to chronic deficiencies in amino acid uptake.
In addition, soybeans also contain hemagglutinin, a clot-promoting substance which causes red blood cells to clump together. These clustered blood cells cannot properly absorb oxygen for distribution to the body’s tissues, and are unable to help in maintaining good cardiac health.
Hemagglutinin and trypsin inhibitors are both “growth depressant” substances. Although the act of fermenting soybeans does de-activate both hemagglutinin and trypsin inhibitors, cooking and precipitation do not. Although these enzyme inhibitors are found in reduced levels within precipitated soy products like tofu, they are not completely eliminated. For this reason, if you are going to consume soy, I would recommend limiting your soy use to fermented products only, like tempeh or miso.
Only after a long period of fermentation (as ocurs in the creation of miso or tempeh) are the antinutrient and phytate levels of soybeans reduced, making their nourishment available to the human digestive system. The high level of harmful substances remaining in precipitated soy products leaves their nutritional value questionable at best, and potentially harmful.”
I was also listening to some you tube videos about the genetically modified soy holds on to the negative aspects even when fermented or cooked.
So I avoid soy.

How can you eat a raw foods diet and have warmer foods like soup in the winter? Do you have to own a vitamix to make that happen? We’re not able to afford one of those, so are there any other options for us? I guess that’s three questions. Thanks!

Hi Kevin,
I have read your book and I must say thank you, it has helped me not feel so overwhelmed by dietary AND other life changes. Your step by step recommends are a life saver. Kind of Boundry setting/ compassion for self through the changes.
Thanks for being a great coach.
Besides getting tested for what three of the thyroids you are missing, homeopathic support can be helpful.
Thanks again

I have a general question…I just signed up for the renegade health newsletter and have enjoyed perusing through the website – there is lots of good info. However, it seems to me that the majority of people here are so consumed with what to eat or what not to eat that it almost becomes overwhelming, stressful and in the end, really not healthy for the individual. What happend to balance or moderation? I mean, we all know that we need to eat a more vegetarian based diet and that raw foods are generally better than cooked. But sometimes you eat cooked veggies and some folks like soy and others are allergic to it. Why not just find out what works best for you overall and then find a balance? I watched a special on 20/20 about raw food addicts and it addressed a known fact that there is a small fraction who are actually hurting their health because they are overly consumed with the idea of it and are not eating enough or the right kind of calories. I think we have to be very careful here – especially the newbies. I see post after post of people who really don’t know what to eat at what times or in the right amount. It’s concerning to me…

Hi
I am interested in the tooth transparancy thing too. I am only eating about 50-75% raw for the past year and have notice my teeth getting more transparent. I haven’t been rinsing my mouth as much as I should perhaps but could this be all that is causing this?

Hi Kevin,
I was thrilled when you referenced me in your discussion of safe foraging. I never believed you actually read what we wrote.
My question is about nightshades. What veggies are they, and why the controversy? What possibly can be wrong with a tomato or an eggplant?
I am thrilled with your program and have learned so much, especially from the “dumb” questions of the day. What toothpaste do you use? I never knew there were natural alternatives nor understood why to pay extra money to get them. What is your favorite summer drink: I knew about cucumber water, but watermelons? And more.
Your program starts my day, along with a tall glass of lemon water (which has replaced the coffee.)
Thank you.

This is for Muriel:
I’m not a physician, but as a person with “iffy” hypertension, I would really caution against refusing medication. Get it under control medically first, and THEN seek alternatives. You are putting your life in danger by ignoring a life-threatening illness, for which there are virtually no symptoms. In this day and age, it is still known as “the silent killer.”
There is one non-medicine way of lowering your blood pressure, and that is with bio-feedback and meditation. Also, drinking stinging nettle tea can lower BP for some people.
Consider me a friend who knows.

About soy: I hear all this bad things about soy, but, for instance,
flaxseeds have more Phytic acid than soybeans. I think one problem
people may have with soy is that they eat genetically modified soy.
Another thing is that many soy-based products like soy-based cheese
(not tofu) and PVT are highly processed and therefore bad for you.
But people in Asia have been eating tofu for thousand years and they
are very healthy (see the China Study) and live until advanced age
(see The Okinawa Program). I think there’s a difference between eating
tofu like it’s eaten traditionally in Asia and eating loads of highly
processed soy products as meat substitute in the West.
Also, tempeh is not a traditional food in Japan or Asia, it’s from
Indonesia.

About the “Tofu Shrinks Brain” thing:
“Tofu Shrinks Brain,” shouted the headlines of a tidal wave of articles emanating from the anti-soy camp in recent years. The basis for the excitement were discoveries made in the Honolulu Heart Program, an ongoing study of the health of Japanese-American men living in Hawaii. It seems that those who consumed the most tofu (two to four times a week) during middle age showed the most signs of mental deterioration in later years, including greater incidence of Alzheimer’s disease. This was startling, because high cholesterol levels have long been intimately linked to increased risk for Alzheimer’s, and soy has been shown repeatedly to lower cholesterol levels. The researchers who conducted the study, led by Lon White, believe the negative effect could stem from the hormonal effects of the isoflavones found in soy.
Other scientists were not so sure just what was going on here. If tofu consumption increased Alzheimer’s incidence, then there would be more Alzheimer’s in Japan than in Hawaii, because more tofu is eaten in Japan. But in fact the reverse is true.

Hi Tory,
Thanks for the tip!
I’ve been meaning to try testing my pH with those strips, anyway, so this is a great reminder.
As for alkalizing my diet, it really seems like I already have been by eating high to 100% raw with LOTS of daily greens, green juice, and green smoothies. I know it can sometimes take a while to get the body in balance, so I’m curious to see what the strips say. But, I’m not sure how I would need to change what I’m eating if they come up with an acidic result… Do you have any suggestions of what exactly to emphasize or take out of my diet to speed up the alkalizing process?
I also must say, that I’m perplexed by the idea that the tooth problems stem from a systemic acidity issue, especially since they seem so prevalent among people only AFTER they have changed their diet to one that is very alkalizing in comparison to what they were most likely eating before (ie SAD). I know that, in my case, I did eat a diet that was exceptionally better than SAD, but it was still more acidic as compared to what I’ve been eating for six months now. The unusual tooth pain and discoloration started to show up only a couple of months after eating raw. These were marked symptoms that I had never experienced before, and have really seemed to be directly related to the change in diet.
Thanks, again, for chiming in on this, Tory! I’d love to hear from you and AnneMarie, too, Kevin (on both this post and/or my previous post), or from anyone else who might like to!

Hi Kevin,
First off great information as usual. So here is my most pressing question for the day-
1. This past week I got food poisoning as it turns out after eating out a popular raw food restaurant and my holistic doctor insists to me its not safe to eat a high raw food diet today because of this and likelihood of contamination- whether it be a result of the soil, transportation, rancidity, improper food handling. I beg to differ with him- as I know many parasites and bacteria coming from cooked food sources. Whats your take on this?
2. I’m dying to know of another personal trainer you’d recommend in the nyc area since you and Annie Marie are traveling now that would work with me on a program and support raw food diet. Any recommendations of someone who can help achieve rapid results??

Hi Kevin,
As an older lady I am struggling with menopausal systems and am considering the bioidentical hormone replacements, are they safe? Have you any opinions to share from any of the insightful specialists that you have interviewed? i suspect there are many women interested in this issue.
I have been watching you web casts since the first episode and just want to thank-you so much for each and every one of them. I fell as if I am not on this journey of good health alone!

Kevin,
If there is any way, how can you rebuild tooth enamel? In the past, I had made the mistake of drinking apple cidar vinegar water to clean out my body, and consequentely ripped the enamel off my teeth. I know how toxic tooth whiteners are and I would love to find something natural that would be just as effective.

I am WAY over here in Bulgaria right now and although I have found 2 or 3 ‘bio’ products in the chain grocery stores, they are rare finds (and dairy, which I don’t use). It is impossible to know for sure how the local veggies are grown as some people who sell at the markets say theirs are organic, but there is no regulation, no proof and the veggies look just like those in a grocery store.
I am a young mom interested in getting our whole family (two under age 4) onto a mostly raw diet (all raw would be great but unlikely). I’ve ordered a Vitamix and several books (Baby Greens, Raw Kids, 12 Steps to Raw, etc) but I’m concerned with not being able to do this organically. I do plan to plant a garden one day but we are moving constantly and currently unpacking in our latest apartment…so my question is, will I be doing more harm than good if all these foods are grown non-organically?

Sinus issues. I have bad headache/migranes from sinus. I do already use a netti pot. I am transitioning to more raw foods, I no longer have dairy but somtimes have cheese, this one is harder to let go of. I am now taking probiotics and sestemic enzymes. (sorry about the spelling) My breakfast and my morning snack is a green smoothie. When I can not take the headaches any longer I do a tomato, garlic , celery and salt drink in the vitamix, it tastes great, it makes me feel much better but I smelleth much worse.:) Any other ideas? FYI I do not use table salt, but I do crave salt. After all, weren’t avocados and tomatoes made just to have salt? I do have celery in my green drink because I have heard it is high in sodium and I have been making straight celery juice in the afternoon, but it is terribly bitter.

I’d be interested in further info on the irradiated young coconut issue that was brought up on the Ani Phyo interview.
Is this only done on the white bullet shaped version? Is it only on imports from specific countries? Are there sources for young coconuts that don’t have the outer husk removed-and would these be non-irradiated? How about organic vs. non?
What do we know about the effects of radiating food? Does it kill the enzymes? Aren’t irradiated foods supposed to be labeled as such?

Hello Kevin,
My question is what are important foods to include in the diet for healing. I hurt my back in the beginning of this year, and haven’t made a full recovery yet. Is there anything you would recommend for joint health or arthritis pain?
6:40 pm on June 11th, 2009
The food industry has erected a boring, monochromatic wall of tofu & a moat of soy milk turning people away from vegetarianism, let alone from going raw vegan. Why choose such a durable bean, maybe the least digestible legume, for a food source? Obviously for the sake of business interests, not for us consumers.
Just walk down any supermarket isle, not necessarily in a health food store, & check the ingredient lists of random foods, you’ll be surprised to see what all soy is used in & shocked at its prevalence. Yet the human digestive system, atrophied by eating foods already broken down & dessicated (dried out) by cooking & baking, also having us forget even how to chew, needs juicy, delicate raw foods, like sprouts, fruits & salad greens. After all, isn’t that where our words ‘delicious’ & ‘delicacy’ come from, or root they share?
Maybe those whose brains are not too far shrunk will get this, as simple as it is, on top of all the other reasons posted by others here … & there.

Hi Kevin
I have a slight problem with your opinion on soy, some of what you have said is correct but the truth about soy is far more involved.
If you are going to tell people about substances you need to get all of the facts.
I suggest that you do some more research on the subject and let these people know about the anti-nutrient properties of soy.
The asian people have have used soy for a long time but only fermented this is the only way to eat soy. They grew crops of soya beans to re-nitrate the soil between seasons but only eat soy in a fermented state as they new it was not a good food source.
Soy is a libido suppressant and can cause thyroid dysfunction can cause man breasts to name a few.
Please Kevin check out all the facts so you are giving good sound information as people are relying on you to inform them.

Hey Raelle! Thanks for posting! I’m not a huge proponent of scientific research, mainly due to the fact that all results can be manipulated… for the good or for the bad. (Though I do want to say that there of course is value in it.) When we look to natural or cultural uses of soy we find that, yes, they do ferment them, so we likely should eat that type if we were to eat them.
In terms of other science out there, sure, soy does a lot of things, particularly mess with hormones. Though our mission is to inform, entertain and I want to be sure that we keep it light and fun. Otherwise we drone on with facts and figures that may or may not be true.
Sometimes our readers are smarter than we are so we rely on them to continue the conversation! Thanks for doing so!

Hello, I’m just interested what the differences need to be for a 16 year old male vegan’s diet. A lot of the raw foodists put out information about adults, but not children. I know Shazzie has a post saying how she puts eggs in her daughters diet and supplements pretty heavily. I worry I’m not getting enough zinc and iron (or others)? I exercise a lot too. THanks Kev keep up the good work!
PS. And come visit Australia soon would ya!
