I’m looking forward to videos from RSF SB!! Wish I was there with you both! :-)

For the toothpaste, what essential oil did she use? I didn’t catch that. Also, is there a place online that you recommend for purchasing the galacial silt?

We’ve used some different tooth powders. I can’t remember the name of the one we’re using right now. I do notice that tooth powders allowed my teeth to become stronger/harder. I don’t know why people include glycerin in toothpastes when it stopes the teeth from re-enamaling themselves.

I miss you both! I hope we’ll be able to see each other sometime in the near future. I don’t know if you’d recognize KDcat–she got her hair cut short/sassy looking yesterday! :-P

Lots of love to you both,

    Wendi

I am still on the store bought stuff. But at least it is the “natural” non fluoride kind at whole foods. I think toothpaste needs to be my next experiment :)

I found it very hard to hear some of the words used in both videos. I had to run them back and watch/listen to get it. As someone else commented, I also missed the essential oil used.

What about we who dwell in the city however much against our wills? We can’t-or at least I can’t-pick horse tail locally, although I certainly know what to look for, and there is no way I would use any soil/mud/earth from around here. I know I can get horse tail processed expensively and not necessarily with concern about preserving its best aspects, but glacial silt? Would diatomaceus earth be a reasonable substitute?

I’m using Eco-Dent (http://www.azurestandard.com/product.php?id=HB231), original mint flavor. I get it through Azure Standard (http://www.azurestandard.com/).

I also couldn’t understand some of the words; she doesn’t project that well on video. I use Tom’s natural toothpaste, it’s better than most brands on the market.

I use baking soda mixed with sea salt. I have some powdered horsetail on order right now and after seeing this video will use some of that in my next batch. Next I am going to mix coconut oil, horsetail powder, baking soda and peppermint essential oil. Occasionally I will add cinnamon powder to the paste as well or a different EO for a different flavour.

I am only 5 hours away from the Raw Spirit Festival but cannot make it unfortunately….really looking forward to watching your video updates from there… Have a great time!

I’ve been using a 1-1-1-1 ratio of baking soda + sea salt + hydrogen peroxide + flavor.

    1 Tbs baking soda
    1 tsp sea salt
    1 tsp hp
    1 drop flavor

Ok, that’s not exactly 1-1-1-1, but sort of. I’ve been using lemon oil for flavor, just because that’s what I happen to have.

This combo looks interesting, I’ll have to try it.

    Recently I discovered TriMedica SILVAFRESH
    Silva-Solution Homeopathic Anti-Bacterial Toothpaste. http://www.trimedica.com

It has a soothing mild mint flavor and contains homeopathic silver, aloe vera, marigold, balladonna, sage, myrrh, eucalyptus, plantain, strawberry leaves, vitamin K and xylitol.

Leavea a nice fresh taste in your mouth and I find my teeth have little to no plaque build-up throughout the day… whereas they did before!

This is an interesting topic. Enjoyed the coverage. I use baking soda mixed with sea salt. Nothing fancy but cheap and seems to leave teeth and gums feeling good. I kind of enjoy the salty taste and have never been big on flavored tooth pastes. I am glad this has come up because for sometime I have been wondering if the baking soda might be too abrasive and wear down the enamal of the teeth. I wouldn’t think so after hearing the use of silt but am still curious. Any one have insight on this? Thanks for your opinion ahead of time.
PS I do want to try this one though and like the others have mentioned, I would like to know where to get the silt and what substitutes are available….besides the mud and sand from around here…YUKY :)

Hmm, I bet you could use one of the clays that Mountain Rose Herbs carries if you can’t get to a good clean alaskan silt. They also have horsetail pretty inexpensively…I love that site. I think I will add some clay and horsetail to my next order.

I mostly use baking soda. sometimes I mash up strawberries and apply , let sit, and rinse off – its a natural whitener.

She did not mention what oil / flavor she added to this mixture?

What type of flavoring oil did she add…mint? I currently am using Dessert Essence tea tree oil toothpaste…just got it…but would like to make my own. After I bought it (on line) I discovered it has sodium lauryl sulfate in it..ick!

I use to use baking soda and hydrogen peroxide at suggestion of a dentist, but then he told me he found out that it is too abrasive to teeth. The alternative dentist I am going to now also told me even tooth paste is too abrasive and to just use water or mouth wash to brush my teeth. But then I found Karen Adler’s Tooth Soap, and I absolutely love it.

I use Karen Adlers toothsoap mint&fennel which I love. It really makes my teeth feel clean and they seem to be whiter than they ever have been! A bit expensive but it goes a long way. I have receding gums so I’m waiting to see if tooth soap will make a difference compared to so may other products I have tried.

Great information. I will try this sometime.
I use Dr. Bronner’s Organic Shikakai Spearment Peppermint Hand soap (pump bottle) to brush my teeth. I just pump a small amount into my mouth & brush. Sometimes I add a little baking soda to it. I also have used Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint bar soap–I just swipe my brush across the bar.

Thanks for all the great information Kevin & Annmarie. Love you guys.

Since your promotion of ToothSoap I have been using it (cinnamon). I went to a new dentist a few weeks ago after using ToothSoap all this time (has it been about 6 months?) and the hygienist did not give me such a great report about my gumlines–I have committed to the raw food lifestyle for a year now. Something is not working well for me yet…looking for the right combo…and it may be that the new dentist has a different standard then the one before although I traveled over 3 hours to my previous dentist because of her reputation. I’m looking for a hygienist who can do the interim cleaning here locally. Dental care is a high priority for me and finding the right daily care program including food choices and dental products is important to me! Thank you for addressing it again with some more ideas to explore. Some homeopathic practitioners suggest avoiding mint if taking their remedies.

Very interesting. I use an assortment of nothing to Tom’s. I’ve used just plain soap or Montmorillonite Clay. It works well.

I’ve been told not to use it every day because it could damage the enamel. I don’t know if that is a realistic issue or not.

I just have to write about my experiences with some of the greatest tooth pastes/elixirs that I have found to date.
One is the famous tooth soap, available at toothsoap.com, it has been really effective.
Another favorite of mine is Uncle Harrys All natural toothpaste(can be purchased at uncleharrys.com). The ingrediants are as follows: Utah clay, ionic minerals, magnetic earth, ocean water, collodial silver, eucalyptus, clove, oregeno, and peppermint oils. This is truly very potent, and I have seen my teeth become whiter and stronger. This company also has other tooth pastes versions such as a coconut soap toothpaste, with similar ingrediants, a children’s toothpaste, tooth powders, and the most amazing and potent mouthwash I have ever tried! They also sell many other really great and very affordable household, personal care, herbs, and some food items. Definetely a company worth checking out.

Finally, the most amazing tooth elixer is a product called Oralive and can be purchased through rawvegansource.com. I have to read you the ingrediants, get ready for this! Natural magnetic healing earth, high vibrational frequencies, ground lemurian quartz, oxygen, marine phytoplankton, amazon herbs, essential oils, ancestral probiotic from volcanic microbial soil, and deep ocean trace minerals. Amazing! You have to check out this website, they have very affordable other superfoods and the best personal care products I have ever seen. I hope that this may have been helpful for someone. We have to get away from all of the toxic toothpastes that cause more harm from good. Once we give our bodies true nurishment and trace minerals, our teeth and overall health can begin to remineralize and heal.

I use Toms fennel, it seems pretty harmless.

Response to Leah’s question: if you’re teeth are turning transparent, it means you are losing enamel. This could be due to eating too many acidic foods, such as oranges, apples, tomatoes, etc. One reason why heavy fruit eaters tend to lose their teeth, is too much acid. Even though most fruits are “alkaline-forming” as they are metabolized, they usually are acidic when being chewed and therefore have the effect of wearing down the teeth.

One suggestion: turn your acid fruits into smoothies, blend them with greens, and drink them down fast, then rinse the mouth with water to remove any acid residue. I always rinse my mouth with water after eating fruit, it seems to reduce the acidity.

Also, make sure you are getting enough calcium, magnesium, other minerals and vitamin D. Your body may be able to regenerate the enamel, if you have enough minerals in your diet.

    Good healing to you.

My favorite toothpaste is one I make myself. In a small jar put baking soda, add hydrogen peroxide 3% to desired consistency. That’s it! Simple and very inexpensive. You can add a few drops of essential oil if you like. You’ll find that after using this paste at night you won’t wake up with morning tooth scum–ever.

I’ve been using OraMD which is basically spearmint and peppermint essential oils mixed with sweet almond oil. I have no idea if it’s helping my gums because I refuse to go back to the dentist after they refused to do a normal cleaning rather than the horrifying gum-scraping they wanted to do. I also use fennel & mint toothpaste from Trader Joe’s.

    Hi Kevin,
I love these lessons in self care! I would like to say as others did many times it is so Hard to Hear what the person is saying. The mic must be right at your mouth cuz I can ALWAYS hear YOU!!! And Often all the ingredients are NOT named so that is disappointing.
That was a great recipe however, and I would like to know where to get glacial silt! Horsetail can be gotten at my health food store, so I plan on trying this.

I have been using 3 T of baking soda, 1 tsp of sea salt and wetting it with hydrogen peroxide. Have you read Rami Nagel’s book http://www.curetoothdecay.com/Tooth_Decay/heal_prevent_cavities.htm? He cured his daughter’s tooth cavities and chipping using natural methods.

Hi, I just discovered your site. It is so awesome to connect with people sharing new knowledge. I use Life Extensions toothpaste, and always keep a small container of our Earth’s Living Clay at hand. I dip my brush into the clay about halfway through brushing my teeth, what a difference that makes. The clay can also be packed around the gums at night to deal with gum disease and to just keep the gums healthy. Just went to the dentist for a check up and he said my teeth were great. That is good news at 68 years young! I will now be making my own toothpaste!! Love your site!

Where could I get these ingredients?

Theophilus–I have also having the same problem with my teeth and gums and they have been getting more and more sentive— I use the same tooth soap with cinamon, I dont know if its the cinamon or what. But I just had a tooth pulled last night and and now I back to conventional toothpaste until I find something that works for me. I was reading up on Glacial Silt in my hopes of finding some in bulk for sale. Here is what I found out:

” Decomposition included higher aquatic plants such as sedge, equisetum, carex, reed, pondered, naiad, rush, bark and phytoesteroid-rich pollen from trees, mosses, algae (diatom, blue-green, protococci, and others) plankton along with sources of healing ingredients such as fish scales, shells of crustacea, etc.”

So, if you do not wish to use animal products, I would not recommend glacial silt. the thought of putting petrified fish scales in my mouth kind of grossed me out a bit. But not everyone may be as squeamish as me!!

    Shannon,
I think you raise an interesting question about where to draw the line. For example I don’t want to wear fish scales etc on my face as make-up, and certainly wouldn’t leap at the chance to eat “petrified fish scales” if offered, but the silt is formed over a long time as part of the natural cycles of the earth. Maybe the key here is time? I think it’s reasonable to assume that the dirt from which we grow our food includes feces, dead animals, etc., (things that I would not put in my mouth) that have been extensively broken down over time and recycled. It’s an interesting question Shannon, thank you…

I also use Young Living Thieves Toothpaste and Young Living Thieves Mouthwash. Everytime I order these and about any other Young Living products I receive 20% back in Free products so it more than pays for itself.

There are 3 kinds and I like the Dentratome Plus the best.
    *************************

I also have made my own with:

    1/2 cup baking soda
    1
Tesp. sea salt (I use Readmand Real Salt–(a unrefined salt mined from ancient sea bed–contains 50+ trace mineerals, including iodine)
2 drops Young Living Myrrh oil
1/2 stevia powder( I skip this) (optional) use the raw green stevia powder from the health food store if you use this.
20-40 drops of Young Living Essential Oil–whatever is your favorite–Some of many I like are– Peppermint, Thieves, cinnamon bark or YL Citurs Fresh Essential Oil (there are so many great ones)–if using cinnamon bark use just a few drops and add as needed as it is very strong.

    *******************

Another one I use for whitening is:
    1 TBL. baking soda
    1 Tesp. hydrogen peroxide
Mix ing. together–Brush for a few minutes and rinse throughly
    *******************

    Citrus Mouthwash
20 drops Young Living Essential Oil
10 drops of citrus fresh YL Essential Oil
    1 cup vodka
can add any other Young Living oils you like(they are pure oils and top grade in my opinion)
Combine vodka and oils. Dilute 1 TBS. mixture with 1 cup water. Stir well. Gargle and rinse mouth–do not swallow
    ******************

    One for tightening gums:\
    4 TBS baking soda
1/2 Tesp. salt–(I use Redmonds Real Salt)
few drops of Myrrh Young Living Essential Oil
few drops of Cloves Young Living Essential Oil
few drops of Cinnamon Young Living Essential Oil

I make my own tooth soap using Organic liquid soap and some drops of peppermint oil. I also use oil for oil pulling. The combination of these two give me a clean fresh feeling in my mouth and I have noticed a lessening of decay.
I dont use any abrasives as I dont have plaque at all and I consider abrasives do more harm than good.
I rinse my mouth out with silver solution and gargle with it when necessary for the beginning of sore throats etc- I very rarely get colds now days.

I use The Paste for tooth & gums by Dental Herb Company. You have to order it from your natural dentist (one that removes silver fillings), not your dentist that gets the samples from colgate. It’s FABulous & leaves the mouth feeling clean, unlike that Toothsoap liquid that tastes so bad.
PLEASE KEVIN … give us that list of ingredients … we couldn’t understand her!

    Thats amazing,
we use aloevera for more than 9 years now ourselves and also in the neigborhood.
But here in Germany it is not allowed to speak about the healthy function of the plant.
We have to speak “arround” the possibilitys, the aloe offers.
But in all, the results will proof the ability of what we have promised and so, more and more people here in Germany will use aloevera gel for drinking and aloe-cosmetics and creams for the skin.
And a aloe tooth cream is very important for the health
    Best regards from Germany

Most of this video was inaudible, except for the ubiquitous giggling by Kevin and the roaring of the grinder. Seems your guest said horsetail, glacial silt (does one go chip off a glacier?) and, perhaps, some oil. Worthless but did fill air time, I’m sure.

Because your audio is so poor, perhaps you would consider printing out recipes demo’d by your guests. Or at least let them near the microphone.

I’ve tried activated charcoal (NG), but still use Tom’s fennel because I like the taste. As for those who use Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Soap, you might want to read, and read, and read and read the label. I believe it says do not use in your mouth. You may find the answer to your enamel probs.

This toothpaste is great. Can you do “make it yourself” raw shampoo and deodorant too? Thanks.

I cannot understand what she is saying. This is a bummer. Is there a recipe to look at?

Other people have mentioned/questioned some things that I was considering using to try to make homemade toothpaste: diatomaceous earth, or bentonite clay. But I am wondering if they wouldn’t be too abrasive.

I’m using either one of Tom’s SLS free or Young Living’s toothpastes. Both contain glycerin, which does not sound good to me.

Many years ago, I read that baking soda inhibits some B vitamins. although the argument can be made that you do spit it out.

Many raw vegans are VERY concerned about dental health and do have tooth probs. Interesting to note that Dr. Weston Price examined people from all over the world and those with the healthiest bodies and healthiest teeth, did NOT even brush their teeth. They had a greyish greenish slime on their teeth, no cavities, and teeth were straight. They ate a mineral-rich diet that although plant-based, did contain some animal products – milk, eggs meat and fish etc. This is one reason, why I also eat small amts of them as well.

Just a note please do not brush your teeth the way the woman does in the video. That kind of aggressive toothbrush technique is not good for your enamel or your gums, even if the toothpaste isn’t abrasive. Always use a soft or very soft brush, and angle the bristles towards the gum line. Just a thought from a dental hygiene student! Happy brushing!

I have been “watching” the videos the past few days, and I have to say I got *none* of what is being said, but from reading some words on webpage (title, keywords, comments, etc.), I get a gist of what the video was talking about. The reason is I am profoundly deaf. So subtitle/caption on what is being said in video will be GREAT! I know you guys have a lot to share with us, but all these uncaptioned videos and “unanswered” comments from other people are *useless* for us Deaf People. All we saw are people moving around, lips moving, a lot of smiles, etc. That is it. It doesn’t tell us a story, know what I mean??

I can’t say if these videos are good until we understand what is being said there. I LOVE transcripts!, but I still LOVE captions and/or subtitles because that make me feel good that the people are being considerate of Deaf People’s needs. We Deaf People are just as real as you Hearing People are. Thank you for your time and consideration to help us out more. :-)

I also started with selfmade toothpaste with aloe vera for my family and friends and in the end everybody was crazy about it. Meanwhile I also sell it in my small Aloe Vera eShop: http://www.aloevera24.net

Guys…she said: 1 teaspoon of horsetail powder, and 1 tablespoon of silt and/or earth of any kind. She didn’t mention the type of EO, but it looks like peppermint. My recipe is, 1 tsp of neem powder, 1 tbl of bentonite clay, 2 drops of peppermint, 1 drop of tea tree oil, 2 tbls of aloe vera juice and enough distilled water to make a medium paste in a 2 ounce container.

Because of some treacherous dental work, I have had some difficulty with cavities. I am thinking about a mixture of bentonite clay, horseteail powder and baking soda with a sprinkle of xylitol to aid in the revesrsal of dental caries. (Perhaps equal parts of baking soda and horsetail powder with 1/4 part of bentonite clay and a sprinkle of xylitol.)
    What do you think?
    Please advise.

    Thank you
