Hi Kevin, love your exuberance for life. Glad to see you are motivating people to go into the raw food business. I guess that’s what you are doing? Anyway, the news has to get out everywhere about how the food manufactures are stimulating peoples brain nuerons with commercials about their nasty salt, sugar and fat products. Contaminated frozen foods are also being sold to the unaware.

First, I have used both Dr. Richard Schultze’s colon cleanse and the Colonix cleanse from DrNatura.com. Both worked very well, esp. the Colonix. As for whether or not Vitamin D can be washed off, I suppose that is why I have intuitively always waited for hours after I have been in the sun to shower. I love to take a nap after being outdoors for awhile so I can allow my body time to absorb all that wonderful energy!

Hi Kevin! I’m still confused about sun exposure. I believe mainstream media and medicine over emphasizes using sunblock and keeping out of the sun, but if skin cancer runs in one’s family then shouldn’t one try to only get a small amount of exposure?

Plus, I’m personally afraid of getting alligator-looking skin like some people who are in the sun a lot most of their lives. I know that diet and other factors affect this, but I still worry that I might be ruining my skin for the future by letting it tan a bit now (I have middle eastern heritage so I tan very easily.)

Can you add on to this discussion at some point? Thank you, Nicole

I love Dr. Schultze’s products and have done his colon and other cleanses many times as well as Blessed Herbs cleansing products, which are also top notch. However, by far I have had the best results with a combination of Amazon Herb Company’s Fiberzon Regular and HoneyCombs Industries Intestinal Tune Up. These are both excellent companies and products, but the synergy of both of them together is amazing. I cannot recommend them highly enough.

the amount of time needed daily to spend in the sun is felt to be 1/4 of the time it takes to get pink. So if it takes an hour to start to get pink, then 15 min is enough exposure. Darker skinned individuals who take longer to start to burn obviously need more time in the sun and very fair skinned people who get burned if you say “sunshine” to them, will need much less. In the north in winter, probably can’t burn if you stay out all day, so vit D deficiency is much more prevalent, and usually need a supplement.

D2 (vegan vitamin D) is perfectly good at providing and replenishing vitamin D levels. I know because I had a vitamin D deficiency a few years ago, and corrected it using D2.

D3 is faster acting, more absorbable, and stored for slightly longer than D2. But D2 does the job. Just use more D2, such as 1000 IU per day or so during winter months. I live in England and use a combination of D2 capsules and sunlight during the summer months, and my vitamin D situation is perfect now.

So, D2 does the job, it just needs to be taken more regularly than D3 (once per day is fine) and in a slightly higher dosage.

    Kevin,

Sometimes your answers are right on, but this time, you’re way off.

Please read the wikipedia article on Vitamin D.

When you do, you will learn that vitamin D is made from a form of cholesterol that occurs deep inside the skin, not on the skin surface. Therefore, you can not wash off vitamin D, no matter how hard you try. Your body will even make vitamin D while you are swimming.

Here is a quote from the wikipedia article:

“Vitamin D3 is produced photochemically in the skin from 7-dehydrocholesterol. 7-Dehydrocholesterol is produced in relatively large quantities in the skin of most vertebrate animals, including humans. The few exceptions are some bat species, mole rats, cats, and dogs,[11] which produce little vitamin D.[18] In most animals the highest concentrations of 7-dehydrocholesterol are found in the epidermal layer of skin, specifically in the stratum basale and stratum spinosum.[12] The production of pre-vitamin D3 is therefore greatest in these two layers, whereas production in the other layers is less.”

The Sea Salt Flush seems best to me. Its 2 teaspoons of sea salt in a quart of water will flush the whole alimentary canal from mouth to anus where a colonic will only clean out the bowel. At that concentration the sea salt is not peed out by the kidneys cuz its gravity will have it flow thru as food clearing out the whole intestinal tract. The salt has a drawing, extruding maybe?, effect, yanking out the toxins. Isn’t that so? Or am I deluded? & it’s to be drank down in the morning before anything else is taken in morn or well after a meal, an hour after drink…I think even water? Colonics are counter flow. Salt flushing goes with the flow, & How!

    Kevin,

As far as I know, the UVB rays are the ones that induce vitamin D production. These rays are mostly active when the sun is high in the sky around noon.
That’s the time to go out into the sun (for a short period of time, depends on skin sensitivity).
if you go out into the sun in the mornings/afternoons you mostly get UVA rays which actually inhibit the absorption of vitamin D.
(at least according to Dr. Mercola).

I take everyone’s advice with a “grain of salt” including yours(:

    Awesome show nevertheless!

    Cheers,

    Yair

I think that the most effective and efficient colon cleanse is using 2 Tablespoons of Liquid Bentonite Clay with 2 Tablespoons of Psyllium Husk mixed with 8 oz. water (or apple juice to make it more palatable) taken on an empty stomach at least twice a day for 2 – 4 weeks.

I would say that you are being as careless as you accuse Kevin of being if wikipedia is your only source of information on this topic. Remember, anyone in the world can add to a wikipedia article. Wikipedia can be a good overview of a topic, a jumping off point for further research, but never a source of truth.
There’s a reason students are not allowed to cite wikipedia as a source in research papers.

    Hi Kevin,

I just finished 30 days of the Ejuva cleanse. Expensive, but worked very well and gently and I felt pretty good throughout the cleanse. I notice that my transit time for digestion is now much quicker (keeping a eye on those corn kernals). And the bloating and gas I suffered from is now gone as well as a few extra pounds.
I also do colonics once a month but step up to 6 sessions of once a week for a spring cleanse.

    Hey Michael,

    Thanks for your comments :-)

Your reference explains where you can find pre-vitamin D3 (which is D2) and says that D3 is mostly found in the outer layer of skin, which of course is where it is converted photochemically.

That seems to support more than detract!

If you can find some more info, I’m more than willing to listen!

Is it bad to add hemp protein to a green smoothie? Does it negate the health benefits of the other ingrediants or defeat the purpose of having just greens and fruit? I always feel most energized and satisfied when I had hemp protein into my smoothies, it also gives it a nice creamy texture similar to if I used an almond milk or something. Let me know your ideas.

  41. Michael T.

    Kevin, please read the article:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitamin_D

The key distinction is whether vitamin D is made ON the skin or IN the skin. If it is made ON the skin, it could wash off. But since it is made IN the skin, about 4 or 5 layers deep, there is no way it could wash off.

Also, vitamin D-2 is not made in the human body. If we eat D-2 that is found in plants and some animals, we can convert it to D-3 but that process does not occur in the skin and it does not require sunlight.

We produce vitamin D-3 directly. When sunlight hits the skin, pre-vitamin D-3 is made, but this is NOT D-2. Vitamin D-2 is produced by plants and by invetebrate animals in response to UV light.

The pre-vitamin D-3 is then converted into D-3, which goes to the liver for further conversion into the biologically active forms of vitamin D.

    The article states:

“Vitamin D2 (made from ergosterol) is produced by invertebrates, fungus and plants in reponse to UV irradiation; it is not produced by vertebrates. Little is known about the biologic function of vitamin D2 in nonvertebrate species. Because ergosterol can more efficiently absorb the ultraviolet radiation that can damage DNA, RNA and protein it has been suggested that ergosterol serves as a sunscreening system that protects organisms from damaging high energy ultraviolet radiation.[11]

Vitamin D3 is made in the skin when 7-dehydrocholesterol reacts with UVB ultraviolet light at wavelengths between 270–300 nm, with peak synthesis occurring between 295-297 nm.[12][13] These wavelengths are present in sunlight when the UV index is greater than 3. At this solar elevation, which occurs daily within the tropics, daily during the spring and summer seasons in temperate regions, and almost never within the arctic circles, adequate amounts of vitamin D3 can be made in the skin after only ten to fifteen minutes of sun exposure at least two times per week to the face, arms, hands, or back without sunscreen. With longer exposure to UVB rays, an equilibrium is achieved in the skin, and the vitamin simply degrades as fast as it is generated.[1]”

Regarding the reliability of wikipedia, of course you have to use some common sense. Anybody can post an article there, but it will be peer-reviewed, and if it is junk, it will be challenged and removed. If you think the vitamin D article is erroneous, go ahead and challenge it.

I have a good scientific background. I was a straight A student, and I remember things well. I cringe when I see erroneous information being published.

I am pointing out errors because I want to help certain websites and blogs to become known as reliable sources of accurate health information. I believe Kevin’s show has that potential, but it’s not there yet.

I volunteer my services as a fact-checker. Kevin, if you are ever in doubt about the accuracy of something, please run it by me before publishing it, and I will do my best to get the facts straight for you.

    In service,

    Michael Treeplanter

One very important thing we should all have in mind when it comes to sun exposure is – if you want to be in sun whole day, you can. Just make sure that you are in shadow!!!

When we are talking about being in sun it is not that heat on our skin we are going for but positive effects of sun radiation that triggers all good processes in our body. So, follow the shadow, avoid direct sunlight and you can be “in the sun“ whole day and get all the benefits you are looking for.

That you will do well in the shade and that you do not have to be on direct sunlight, proof is in getting tan even if you spend whole day in shadow.

I hope I you can understand me.

Just to correct on vitamin D briefly. As it was said in the skin 7-dehydrocholesterol is converted into previtamin D3 (and this is not a D2).”nd step in the skin when previtamin D3 is rearanged into D3- cholecalciferol. Which is the same D3 found in most supplements.

After that colicalciferol (D3) is transported to liver and converted into 25-hydroxy colecalciferol , which called calcidiol or 25(OH)D. 25(OH)D is still inactive and to be activated is transported into kidney, where it is coverted into active form vit. D –
1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol, whick behave as a hormone ans stilulated better Ca absorption and reduces secretion through the kidney.
This is according to my NUtrition texbook. Essentials of Human NUtrition by Jim Mann and S.Truswell.

The 703 Cleansing Program is the best program there is !.This program detoxifies “5 to 7 years” of toxins, viruses.. parasites – heavy metals in just 7 days . Every one of these cleanses that you do will add at least 5 years to your life . My whole life changed when I made this program a part of my life – I do this program once or more a year – one time a year is required . I had my live blood anaylsis done – saw I was an “accident” waiting to happen and was reccomended to do this program ..I did the program and my whole life changed. Other cleanses are much slower – they stir toxins up instead of ridding all of them..and you never seem clean to the bottom of the bucket! Noble Perfection in Chas South Carolina taught me to do the program and I have my own equipment and I never need to see a doctor. Easy to do just requires -commitment..and investing in your health.
I am 45 years old and feel like I am 20 .I send everyone looking for a detox program to this place. For more info on the program lets see… go to http://www.nobleperfection.com or call 843-478-8806.

I commented on your youtube link video Kevin about the vitamin D thing, but seems Michael has already addressed key points. If you want to see how 7 dehydocholesterol converts to the active form 1,25(OH)D3. You can just go on google and search images, there are some easy to understand diagrams there. Unfortunately Mercola isn’t always right either, this is why you best do some cross referencing to check that the source you’ve gotten from is unique and supported by scientific references (pref search on pub med). And also make sure that 2nd souce you got it from isn’t references the same guy who made the mistake ;)

Vitamin D2 also is probably not the best supplement to take either because level of active vitamin D drop more quickly after stopping the vitamin D2 supplementation.

Me personally I take 5000 IU of Vitamin D3 per day, and avoid sun exposure to help stay looking young. However, for those that are not ‘worried’ about sun damage to the skin and the long term implications (no not talking about cancer, just general skin aging), then definitely worth getting much sun as you can because as kevin said, vitamin D deficiency is very common even in sunny places, and it’s been linked to cancer, higher risk of infections, autoimmune diseases, chronic pain, inflammatory diseases, arthritis, poor bone quality etc etc…

You should try and get a bit of sun exposure lets say on yor hands and arms. for about 10 minutes. Put sunscreen on the rest of your body. and allow a small part to produce some vitamin D.

If we constantly use sunscreen, then the potential for Vitamin D production is greatly reduced.

Hi all you Rawlicious Warriors! I have participated in many, various colon cleanses. In my opinion, it is best to start subtly, as to not alarm the body/mind/psyche with a harsh, extreme, fasting herbal cleanse right off-the-bat. Best to start maybe by introducing the body to the cleansing process with something like a pinch of slippery elm bark powder (bulk section of Whole foods, etc), placed in warm water and drunk in the morn (& maybe more during the day), after sitting 20-30 minutes until cool and slimy to assist the alimentary canal. Triphala, an ayurvedic, tridoshic set of herbs, taken best in the evening, in powder or pill form, assists peristalsis of the colon. Simply eating more raw, fibrous fruits and/or cold-pressed, organic, raw oils like olive oil will begin cleansing of the colon. A lot of the herbal-mania cleanses, which I love, have herbs for cleansing kidney, liver, etc as well, so to begin with a little colon stimulation and more simple cleansing first can possibly prevent healing reactions/crises. It may even be all you need/want for the time being. Enemas and colonics are great as well to clear the Way! Edgar Cayce suggests a 3-day, strict apple mono-diet, with a tablespoon of olive oil at the end of the day. And an enema/colonic daily as well, near dusk. I have done this cleanse, and it works well! When it comes to the full-throttle cleanse, I Love love love the Arise and Shine (pesticide-free, wild herbal) month-long cleanse, ending in a week of juice-feasting with the prescribed herbs. No joke, the pictures circulating the internet of alien-looking slime-goo, taking the shapes of various sections of the intestines, is real! A similar yet psyllium-free cleanse I love as well is called Ejuva; it is a Chinese and Ayurvedic-based system of cleansing that uses organic and certified herbs with no fillers or additives. These are all wonderful methods of cleansing the colon! Before going to bed, rub the colon, from lower-right abdomen, up to meet rib cage, across the abdomen (above umbilicus), and down to left-lower abdomen then down to the central pelvic girdle. Flow, flow, let it go! LOVE!

I have used the Blessed Herbs colon cleanse (ginger is my flavor of choice, but they also have peppermint). Very gentle, never a feeling of urgency, no cramping…best done by eating as “clean” as you can for two to four weeks prior to starting the cleanse. Several options are given addressing varying levels of cleansing desired. Reasonably priced.

How do you test for Vitamin D?

I have done the Master Cleanse also known as the Lemonade Cleanse quite a few times and it is excellent. It is especially good if you can find local, dark, end of season maple syrup, because it offers a lot more nutrition.

You need a test called 25(OH)D test. Ask you doctor or something. You probably want at least a level at around 40-50 ng minimum. Above 30ng is recommended now…

Lanolin is not less cruel than fish oil. Both are cruel and unnecessary.

“In Australia, where more than 50 percent of the world’s merino wool—which is used in products ranging from clothing to carpets—comes from, lambs are forced to endure a gruesome procedure called mulesing, in which huge chunks of skin and flesh are cut from the animals’ backsides, without any painkillers. Millions of these sheep are then shipped to the Middle East on crowded multilevel ships. These journeys, which can last for months, are to countries where animal welfare standards are non-existent. The suffering sheep are dragged off the ships, loaded onto trucks, and dragged by their ears and legs to unregulated slaughterhouses, where their throats are slit while they are still conscious.

Sheep are gentle individuals who, like all animals, feel pain, fear, and loneliness. But because there is a market for their fleece and skins, they are treated as nothing more than wool-producing machines.

    Hi Kevin and AM:

The ratio of 2 to 1 Vit D deficiency turned out to be right in my family. My husband and I just got tested and his was fine but mine is seriously low. I was shocked because I get daily and don’t wear sunglasses (because I heard the sun is absorbed around the eyes?) and I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. But I don’t sunbathe per se – most of the rest of my body never sees the sun. So I started sunbathing 7 mins on each side every day at least during the warmer months (I live in MA). So far it’s a nice ritual. It’s been helpful reading all the comments. Thanks everyone.

My favorite colon cleanse, although not for the faint at heart, is Dr. Paul Goss, 7-day cleanse or The New Body Flush. I PASSED GALLSTONES NATURALLY.

I take his CKLS herbal colon cleanser for three days to start dispelling packed in waste.

Then on day 1 take about 3 (it calls for 5 though) with water and later I drink 16oz of cold-pressed olive oil, sipping on it and finishing it within 30 mins.(it will not give you high cholesterol- lol)

Then you just relax for the weekend while your body flushes months of bacteria and parasites. I even saw that I had passed little green pellets in my stool. I didn’t think that a person my age (25) would have those. Especially because I had given up meat months before.

Being in the sun and just outside in general really helps with your mood too! Vitamin D is important in treating depression. I know that I always feel better after some time outside. :)
