It has been my experience that most people, especially my family are not interested in the way I eat. I’ll continue to take raw dishes to our family dinners and sometimes they like it, like my hummus, dehydrated crackers and my yummy yam salad. The hummus and salad are recipes from Hallelujah Acres and sooo good. It does no good to try to push it on them, even tho I know the importance of my lifestyle but they have noticed how good I feel and act and look for my age—74.

Passion is a wonderful thing. If they see
you are passionate they will be more likely
to listen and try to understand. There is nothing more boring than to hear someone talk about something they are not passionate in.

      Passion rubs off on people.

shouldn’t ones passion always be fueled by their personal believes???
and of professional??? just do what you love and what makes your heart sing and the only people who will worry are those who stand to lose i.e pharmaceutical company’s and multi-national corporations! lets all just relax. They say the truth is an offence but not a sin!?!?
      love 2 you kevin and ann-marie ;-)

1st I thought the cat was staying on land with someone. Does kitty do well on the road & not run off when you make pit stops? And 2nd Actually I have found that providing valuable health, nutrition & diet info with those who could gain from it (those suffering from disease, obesity, or illness) is not received well. It is such a “personal & emotional” issue .. somewhat like religion actually. It seems it’s only those who ASK for the info who receive it well. I have had to bite my tongue with those I care about who are going through traditional western medicine, ie chemo & radiation. it’s sad.

Well, according to your last question i would recommend patience, staying calm and sticking to facts and figures. They say that constant dripping wears away the stone. Be the best example and the best proof that what you say is right. Who believes a dietitian that looks sad, lonely, ill and powerless? If you look your very best, people will start asking you on their own terms about your secret (i know they do it with me,and they are always surprised and start considering to change something).

Yes! Be passionate! Keep your passion, and what fuels them. Just add to your personal beliefs one core value: to honor everyone who crosses your path.

If you remain honorable and respectful in your dealings with everyone-you will be professional. :) If you don’t honor someone then you cannot receive anything from them. If you honor someone then it enables you to learn from them. This means remaining open to what others have to say, and to speak into your life-don’t get cocky or know it all. Like Kevin said, make sure you are actually meeting peoples needs.

      :)

If someone is not asking for help and you push because of your passion you will simply push them away. So if you really want to be helpful let your passion change you, then everyone will see it and all of a sudden they will be asking what you are doing and why you are doing so great!!!

Q: When my passion to help people is fueled by my personal beliefs, what can I do to stay professional?

Alternate Question: When I am passionate about my personal beliefs, what can I do to not be an a**hole.

I think in both instances, it’s just about respect and openness. And a quote from Mike Watt: “I am certain of some definite errors in my thinking. Example: knowing I can’t know.”

I think your answer was a very good one Kevin. We really need to leave our egos out of it and we ALL have one. People really don’t care much how much you know until they know how much you care. Therefore, instead of trying to prove your way is the RIGHT way speak with a heart of caring and love for others and you should not have any problems. Thanks Kevin and AnnMarie for posting these videos for everybody. You guys are really awesome!

I have seen many people turned off by passion -why? we have all had friends who have been involved in the multi level marketing or born again christian scenarios. they soon run out of friends.- why i do not hold anything against these I do not want to be preached to.

i have also seen passion verge on neurotic behaviour particularly with exercise…rest is a vital component of a healthy lifestyle.

Moving from a heart of love and action is part of the equation. people will see your health improvements, happiness etc. Most people are open to learning from a heart of love. and by action i dont mean standing outside your local take away joint with a placard shouting raw food forever!!! he he he

another point – what is to say your point of view is right? (although i probably have similar views to you). have you heard the saying when the student is ready the teacher will appear. we do not know what is going on in another’s life – it may not be appropriate for them to make changes. e.g it may have a bigger impact if the person chooses to improve health in a years time.

from the age of 2 we are trying to assert our own authority (that is why it is called the terrible twos -he he). we basically dont like to be told what to do. go inside and you will be guided as your best course of action – but still we dont need to take it.

I was looking for a place to comment on an issue that disturbed me This may come under the question of professional and personal integrity.

I was listening to the David Wolfe interview you have at your other site and where as I enjoyed what he said.

His Personal view of not washing his vegetables from his garden because of his personal opinion is absolutely frightening to me as professional opinion.

As someone who contracted a PARASITE called the Rat Lung Worm from consuming an unwashed lettuce leaf and spent 10 years recovering.

At the time of my illness I was an organic grower with an acre of produce
All fruit and vegetables should be washed irrespective of being organic or not.

I truly hope you bring to the attention of your audience that the natural dangers are just as dangerous as chemical spray.

Hey Kevin/Anna Marrie, Thank You, for your excellent shows…I have no ideas on how to stay professional, but I do want to wish ultimate hapiness and success on your RV Journeys, also to fill you in a bit, I just got back from the Rainbow Family gathering in Ocala, it was a kind of psycotrophic experience, mostly just being in the beautiful ocala forest, but there were alot of police at the event, and sadly many of the folks that I was camped near, were eating and talking and acting like barbarians, in fact and not really enjoying the true pleasures of being in oneness with creation. That was kind of troubling, especially at a Rainbow gathering that I thought would have been very vegeterian, and peaceful, but of course you can not try to pursuay others on how to live their lives so I was just happy to be in the great outdoors for a couple of days…

As a holistic health counselor, I am constantly hit with this situation. I put my own opinion forward, but I always share my thoughts on the other opinions and theories out there. I don’t belittle a theory, because someone out there (even if it’s not me) believes in it. Who knows? Everyone is different, so what might work for me, or you, or kevin, might not work for everyone.

Subtle persuasion is a great tool for professionalism.

I think asking people what their goals are is a good start. Some people might be very ill and not have any desire to change their habits. I’ve had a lot of success with my family and friends seeing my body, spirit and total energy change, and they want to know what they can do. I guess, my thought is to stay on their level. Only give them enough info that they can handle, it’s important not to turn them off. Thanks for the show!

      Kevin,

I was interested to know more, when you were talking about “The Map” and Richard DiCenzo.

I looked up majortransformation.com and unless I have the wrong website, it says that the domain is for sale!

I got the spelling of the name by trial and error…just trying to get something to come up, anywhere on the Internet and found a comment on a link to, “ON THE POLISH HERITAGE DINNER”, which says,

“There are also some people I would like to recognize who are not with us here tonight, and some who are no longer with us. DOLORES DiCENZO, very active in the club, baked tons of desserts for the club, worked at the festivals, organized Polish masses, and sang in the choir…

…and her deceased husband, RICHARD DiCENZO, who passed away this past Christmas…

…Richard, though having Italian roots, felt very Polish. He asked everyone not to call him Dicenzo but Dicenzowski! He even had business cards made with this name! Richard loved our pope and, as a musician, he wrote a song in his honor to the melody of the Polish national anthem. We sang it at one of our masses. Jerry encouraged Richard to send it to Rome, which he did, and he received thanks and an acknowledgement from the Vatican.”

I probably have the wrong spelling. Can you lead me to the proper place so that I can learn more about “The Map”?

Can’t believe that it’s him who died…I must be wrong.

      Thanks,

Remain open and present – allow what is called for in each moment to come through you. Come from your heart, not your mind.

Passion is awesome! I run regular seminars on cleansing and also have a colon hydrotherapy clinic … I constantly see people around me making amazing changes in their lives – this is not from me pushing anything on them, but just by LIVING my beliefs and listening to them – wherever they’re at right now! People hear themselves clearly and honestly in this space and are able to find their own truth and passion! Yay for life!

      B12 Information …
Forget supplements! B12 is produced in the large intestines by good bacteria. If your colon is toxic and more than likely colonized by “bad guys”, then you WILL be low in B12 and therefore iron. Keep your colon clean, sow the “good guy” seeds and maintain an environment where they will thrive and your B12 levels will be super!

Regularly WEED and SEED your beautiful garden!

Kevin, I was wondering if you have any suggestions for me. My husband still eats the standard American diet and refuses to transiton towards a more raw lifestyle. I am also the one who cooks dinner and so on. I have been trying my hardest to ramain as raw and healthy as possible but still have cravings for all of the foods that I know aren’t beneficial for me. It just becomes very difficult when I am constantly cooking, tasting and testing the food that I cook to make sure that it tastes good enough to serve. But this also makes it very difficult for me to completely obstain from eating cooked foods when I am constantly around my temptations. My three year old is also a very picky eater. She loves cheese, milk, and noodles. I have no idea how to get her away from those foods when she is so attached to them and doesn’t understand or care to eat more healthful foods. She loves fruit but refuses to eat any vegtables. And the last part of this agitating puzzle is that my husband trusts that I have the best intentions, but because he grew up eating lots of sugar, high carb, high meat foods, he tries to continually give “small” amounts of processed and sugar laden foods to my daughter. He thinks it’s okay to give her some of these crappy foods all the time. It has really become almost like a religious war between us. My husband thinks that I go overboard and am over bearing. But the reality is is that I just want the best for my child, and I don’t want her to be subjected to these kinds of toxic foods on a regular basis, no matter how small of an amount. As a result she craves these foods more and whines for them. This is not how I want her to be brought up. I am normal, it’s everyone else that has become desenceatized by the world’s view of what is normal, okay and “healthy.” Anyway, I am sorry for going on forever. But if you have any suggestions I would really appreciate it. It is very difficult trying to be as healthy as possible when my loved ones are not on the same boat. Any advice at all, I would love to hear. Thanks so much!!

As for people who are passionate about something but they are trying to help people, they need to be careful how they word their advice.I have a choice about what I accept as what is good for me.I don’t need or want to be told that someone’s way is the only way.Make it a suggestion to me not a requirement.

Life is an education, and what you’re exposed to early on and for the first time, generally has the biggest influence on lifestyle choices. I’ve found that the best path to follow is to help those who ask for guidance and the rest will follow eventually unless their minds are no longer pliable. It’s not easy being green.

Kevin, please help with my confusion regarding enzymes. This was found on the internet re: enzymes:
      allergies.
Nearly every person can benefit from supplementation with enzymes. Even healthy people may improve their absorption and utilization of nutrients through the use of digestive enzymes. Of course the benefits will vary, depending upon the individual’s diet and general health. This paragraph falsely implies that nearly everybody is suffering from enzyme deficiency.
Individuals in good health can expect to notice less fullness after meals, increased energy, faster emptying of the stomach contents, decreased gas, and more regular bowel habits. Individuals in good health are unlikely to notice any difference as a result of “enzyme supplements.”
For years body types have been recognized as distinct differences in human form. Each body type is different due to biochemical reactions which help us function properly. These biochemical reactions cannot occur in the body without enzymes. A deficiency in a particular enzyme can significantly affect the function of that body type. No body type corresponding to this description has been recognized by the scientific community.
Deficiencies of certain enzymes in certain body types can result in the following health problems: hypoglycemia or diabetes; mood swings; depression; allergies; PMS; acne; fatigue; cold hands/feet; low blood pressure/high blood pressure; neck and shoulder pain; arthritis; muscle spasms; difficulty losing weight; . . . high cholesterol/heart disease; toxic buildup/leaky gut syndrome; joint inflammation; sexual dysfunction; osteoporosis; insomnia; weakened immune system; sinus infections. This list is complete nonsense. Most of the conditions have nothing whatsoever to do with any type of enzyme deficiency. A few of the listed conditions may be associated with uncommon metabolic disorders in which lack of an enzyme occurs. No condition on the list can be alleviated by enzyme pills. Any claim that Nu-Zymes could treat diseases would be considered a drug claim and would violate state and federal laws.
To find out what body type you are, what enzymes you may be deficient in, and what resulting health problems you risk facing, get our new Body Type Analysis Guide – available FREE with every order of Nu-Zymes. No “body type” system related to enzyme deficiency has been recognized by the scientific community. No questionnaire can de devised that would determine whether an individual suffers from an enzyme deficiency.

Others who have promoted nonsensical “enzyme deficiency “concepts include:

Jay Kordich, an advocate of “juicing” who claims that “live foods” are superior to cooked or processed foods because they contain “active enzymes.”
Howard F. Loomis, D.C. whose “Enzyme Replacement System” is based on treating “enzyme deficiency states” with products “targeted to organs stressed by subluxation.” The alleged deficiency states are identified by taking a history, examining the patients, obtaining a “24-hour urinalysis, ” and correlating this information with “recurring spinal subluxation patterns.” The products listed in Loomis’s 1995 catalog include Chiro-Zyme, a line of “carefully formulated combinations of herbs, vitamins and minerals with plant enzymes,” each named with an abbreviation for certain spinal segments and an organ or body function. The product C8 to T1 Thy, for example, was claimed to “nourish the tissues of the thyroid gland stressed by subluxations of the upper thoracic and cervical spine.”
Infinity2, a multilevel company whoe professional distributors used live cell analysis to persude people they need to take enzyme pills.
Ronald Schneider, whose Web site describes him as a “leading enzymologist” and “self taught holistic nutritionist”.who “has studied at the Arizona State Public Medical Library and has over 10 years of research material.” Schneider claims that, “Although digestive enzymes occur naturally in our foods, they are destroyed by commercial growing, cooking and processing methods. Carbonated drinks, strenuous exercise, environmental factors and stress further deplete our enzyme stores and ability to make more enzymes for bodily functions.”
National Safety Associates (NSA), which markets Juice Plus+®, based on the theories of Humbart Santillo, N.D.
      FDA Enforcement Action
On January 28, 2003, the FDA warned MediaPower that promotional material for Nu-Zymes and two other products contained illegal therapeutic claims and were misbranded. The warning letter, addressed to CEO Kenneth Byers with a copy to company president Christopher M. Homer, objected to claims that Nu-Zymes is useful in treating or preventing a variety of diseases, including acid reflux, arteriosclerosis, arthritis, colon cancer, diabetes, fibromyalgia, high blood pressure, heart disease, and irritable bowel. The letter also warns that a promotional statement that “Nu-Zymes is manufactured in an FDA . . . approved facility” is illegal because the FDA does not approve facilities that manufacture dietary supplements.

Please, please tell me if enzyme replacement is a good thing or not. I considered buying Dr. Bisci’s blend until I read this article? Please let me know your opinion. Thanks

      I love this question!
Stay calm when you are expaining things and giving your point of view and educated advice. Passion is great but it can sometimes scare people.

I am passionate about my beliefs on certain subjects and depending on what I’m talking about I can sound angry or I talk really loudly. My sister has expressed that it scares her.

I personally don’t understand this since I have seen others act this way (my brother and dad) and I can tell the difference between anger and passion.

But especially in a professional situation, keeping your voice calm while being confident and articulate will get the point across.

Also, other people’s views are important too and it’s important to give them equal time and REALLY listen. You may not always agree with each other, but you might learn something even if it’s just something about yourself or the other person. Compromises will need to be reached in situations when that is a factor too.

Always remember, you can only teach so much then allow the student to experience and learn for themselves.

Our passion for something easily turns to compassion for others, but we lose our perspective (and our power to influence) if that causes us to overstep our postition in their lives and lose respect for their right as a human being to make choices for themselfs. We do the most by example and good sound, but gentle, logic when the opportunity arises to talk about our passion, whatever it might be.

Kevin, question :) I’ve been researching about enzymes for nearly a year now. Which actually lead me to raw foods, and to your site. (I really appreciate your honest thoughtful approach) I was looking initially for an inexpensive way to take in enzymes. I can tell they help me, but they are very expensive and budgets being what they are, I needed to ‘go to the source’..raw foods.. for my enzymes. I still feel like I could use a suppliment however. My question is… How did you come to the conclusion that Fred’s were good? (anything other than, your friends recommended it?) In comparision with maybe a standardised brand like Enzymedica?

And, finally, in response to the post above about what Quackwatch has to say, Personally I have stopped reading anything they have to say, since they’re approach is very status quo, and against most anything ‘natural’. If I were to beleive what they and others like them say I’d believe the line that there is no ‘cure’ for my own health issues, and done what my own sister has done, which eventually lead to her death due to taking perscription drugs in the prescribed way. She was only 45, I personally wont go there, which is once again, back to how we can only tell them about our passions, not force them to feel and do as we feel and do, if she had my sister would still be with us. Each of us has to come to our own conclusions, then we individually will live the consequences.

    30. Amanda
      10:34 pm on February 22nd, 2009

From my personal experience I would just simply say (as my answer) to just be respectful and aware of other’s beliefs and speak about your passions in different ways since a person’s background can affect their understanding of something
