A Tour of a Vegetable Oil Fueled RV – The Renegade Health Show Episode #221

Yes, it’s possible to run an RV on straight vegetable oil…

In this episode, Matt shows us how the system works. We weren’t able to collect oil in Montana or anywhere in between because of the cold, but we’re looking forward to the time when we can get our hands a little dirty (literally!).

Take a look…

Your question of the day: What do you do in an RV on an icy day?

Click here, scroll down to the bottom of the page and leave your comment now!

Before I go, I REALLY want to thank Matt and Sara Janssen for showing us around and passing along their amazing home to us! We’ll take good care of it, we promise! If you like, you can get to know them and follow them on their blog by clicking here!

Live Awesome!

I wonder how close you are. It’s not icy here at all, so when you eventually push past that icy area it should be clear for you.

We forgot to pick up the conversation about the Janssens! Jim and I had been watching their videos and looking at their pics and blog for many months. I told Jim to contact them about four or five months ago to ask for some helpful hints, etc. At the time I said, “And they mentioned having another baby, so maybe they’ll want to sell the RV!” I’m super excited for you and Annmarie that you have that RV! I love that they included the awesome desk for you, too! I can’t wait to see it all in person!

Lots of love to both of you,

    Wendi
    XOXOXO

p.s. call if you want to stop by for a shower and/or breakfast tomorrow morning when you head out.

Well, if I was stuck inside an RV, with my beloved husband, I’d feel quite romantic… And, with romance, well, it can’t get much better than that… I’d snuggle up to be warm, read a good book, talk and watch movies… This would be fun!

Usually when I’m stuck inside for any reason, I like to break out the card games. I like Skip-Bo or Uno. You can make up your own game. My family plays a home-made board game my uncle made 40+ years ago everytime we gather together (holidays or not). You have internet, so online movies or shows are fun. Hulu.com is free, I don’t know if you know about that or not.

You guys are too cute :) So sorry you’re stuck in the ice! Good call to wait it out though. Let’s see…if I was stuck in an RV in an ice storm…I would:

*Go outside and play games on the ice
*Count the number of cars that slide off the road all around you
*Eat (do you have enough food!?)
*Surf to the very end of the Internet.
*Listen to Bella ask incessantly if we can go now.
    *Snuggle
*Make silly movies of each other.

Ok…there’s some ideas for ya. We’ve been thinking of you guys! Let us know when you get home.

    Take care,
    Matt, Sara, and Bella

Hey you guys – you are really bookin’ it on your way home!

When we travel in our 5th wheel, we always plan for bad weather. Where we normally head to, the western side of Washington State, that typically means rain and more rain (during the warmer months…)

We make sure to always take along DVDs to watch, books to read and we keep board games, dice (for the game ‘zonk’) and cards in the 5er to have on hand. I usually take along needle work and such too.

I’m glad you’ve pulled over and are waiting this out. Like you said – you’ve got heat, power and a place to sleep. I’m assuming your coach has been winterized, so no using the bathroom or kitchen sink, etc?

    Safe travels, you’re almost there!

I was thinking that you should get your RV painted with a big Kevin and Annmarie across America thing. Maybe with the website under it so people could talk to you as you go and you could get to know more people and have more stories and experiences. For me you are the Raw Food Gurus of the year. Honestly, we love you guys. You two are so down to earth, so real. I also hope you have a good lock on that door and a weapon just in case. Traveling can be dangerous. Get a small dog. (Sorry, just being a mom). Good luck! LOVE, CINDY R.

    Hi Guys,
Amazing idea – I wish to well on your trip when you get going!
There is a reason for everything and I am sure you will find out why you are sitting there.
You can’t be bored – you have each other!
Maybe somebody up there is just telling you to slow down and look at what you have.
Just one question about the fuel – do you know how it works in terms of pollution?

    stay warm and safe.

Have you seen the documentary “Go Further” about Woody Harrelson’s green road trip down the pacific coast? –[This unorthodox documentary from filmmaker Ron Mann examines the notion that each person has the ability to achieve monumental, far-reaching change by altering the most trivial aspects of their own lives. Join actor Woody Harrelson and a varied cast of characters for a bus ride down California's Pacific Coast Highway to promote social change on a global level by opting to modify our current customary, often environmentally damaging actions.]–
Check it out if you haven’t yet!! (Renee Underkoffler is the chef along their trip)

    Hi Kevin,
Thank you for your show. It’s the first ever I see almost every day!
I was going to ask you about something, and you touched on it when you said “your parents never dreamed of having a RV”! If you ever have the time and inclination, (or if you have already written about it or recorded it), I would be very interested in your childhood and teen years. What kind of family you had, what kind of life you led… :-)

We keep 500 piece jigsaw puzzles in our RV. We can put them together in just a few hours, and have the table cleared off again by the time we need to eat on it. We also have a DVD player, plus we take books, knitting, etc. Plus of course, you need to take lots of pictures of the ice on the things around you, the RV in the ice, yourselves by the RV in the ice, etc.

i think you guys have been hanging out with matt and angela too much lately.. i thought i was watching ‘the raw food world’ for a second with you guys laying head to head lol

in an rv on an icy day i would probably spend a lot of time on the internet.. i would take some time to figure out what exercises i could do in the limited space.. if i had someone with me, i would play some games (rummy 500 is fun if you have a deck of cards.. if you could get to a store boggle is a classic, rummikub is fun.. text twist is a good online game)

Well…we were stuck in our 5th wheel during a rain storm. We picked the worse August on record here in B.C. (last August) to go camping the whole month. There were times that we thought they moved the lake to our campsite!!
There was one day that my son was out bikeriding in the drizzle and got caught down by the lake when the storm came in. He was forced to escape into the bathroom down there. The wind and rain got so bad that he was in a stall in the bathroom (with his bike) because the wind was lifting the roof off of the bathroom. We were in the trailer and told him (by cellphone) that he better make a break for it and get back. He came back soaked (and freaked out).
I was talking to my Mom on the phone after that and told her that it could be worse, we could have been a vendor at our exhibition that year and losing money with the weather we were having. We laughed about that and at that second, the power went out. I started to laugh hysterically and my husband must have thought that I went over the deep end because he suggested we go for a ride in the truck. We got part way down the road and discovered a long line of cars backed up. We went back to the campsite and asked what was going on…lightening hit the power lines and knocked out the power and then started them on fire!! That was the only road out. Great. So, we waited it out in the trailer (a couple of hours) then went out for dinner. Oh yeah, the toilet in the trailer decided that it didn’t want to work anymore on that day as well. Word from the wise…if you plan on using the washroom in your RV, make sure you buy RV toilet paper (yes, it is different than regular) as it breaks down easier. Flush lots of water through it as well. We didn’t know that and so the tank had become clogged so bad it became as hard as cement. My husband had to pour enzymes down there and then create a tool to ram it out of there. Sorry, Annmarie, a little graphic but it will save you a big headache. Long story short…I pulled out my suduko and word searches etc. Make yourself a box of things to do when you need to have entertainment. Take care.
