Heather’s Raw Borscht Recipe (Yep, Borscht) – The Renegade Health Show Episode #201

Man, I love that word…

Borscht.

Annmarie and I had WAY too much fun on this show while preparing this raw food recipe.

Today, we prepare a traditional eastern European dish called Borscht. The base is beets.

We love beets… and we love saying “borscht”!

Take a look…

Your question of the day: What is your t-shirt size and would you want one of these cool “Nutrition Facts T-shirts?

Click here, scroll down to the bottom of the page and leave your comments now!

Here’s the raw food recipe for Heather’s Borscht:

1 small beet, washed, cut in half
1 stalk celery, washed, cut in half
1 slice onion
2 stems mustard greens (which Annmarie forgot… oops)
1 chunk cabbage (less than 1/2 cup)
1/4 lemon, washed, with peel
1 very small piece ginger (about 1/2 tsp grated or a little less)
1/4 tsp raw apple cider vinegar
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
1 cup water

Blend on high.
Heather suggest to put it in a white bowl and topped it with a little olive oil.

Annmarie added chunks of veggies to it :-)

Other suggestions: top with slightly sprouted sunflower seeds and some more pepper.

What’s this “yousguys” thing you have going in the video? Ain’t you supposed to say You’enz when you are from Pittsburgh???!!! It’s like calling Pollander all-fruit jelly!

    Hiya,
    Love the recipe for BORSCHT!!!!!
Colour would be nice … red? turquoise? navy?
I would need a size L, after the holidays is great

Cost is important, as I live in Canada…and shipping
“anything” to here from there is very costly.

    Thanks kindly.

I’d LOVE to buy one of the t-shirts after the holidays. (Like mid-January is perfect for me.)

I don’t know what to tell you about size without seeing a size chart from the t-shirt company, though, since I wear anything from an L to an XXXL, depending on the manufacturer! (Which makes me sad when, for example, I can’t fit into the awesome “cow hugger” shirts Herbivore sells because their sizing makes me an XXXL and they only make shirts up to XL.)

If it makes it any easier to figure, I have a 46″ chest. So whatever size that makes me from your manufacturer, that’s what I am. (I usually have to alter t-shirts to get them to fit me right anyway since t-shirts are made as rectangles and I’m so very much not boxy. Fortunately, t-shirts are super easy to tailor so long as they’re big enough to start with.)

    11:23 pm on December 10th, 2008

You two make me laugh out loud…I just love how much fun you have!!

I can think of like 5 people I would love to get that shirt for and of course one for me!!
    I’m a small
I’d probably also buy a couple mediums and an XL for friends and family.

Giving knows no season so take your time!

  21. Welmoed
    11:28 pm on December 10th, 2008

As for the T-shirts: I’ll take an L for me since I like them roomy, and another one for my husband who is your size Kevin, so do you have an L or XL?? And yes, if you will be doing kid sizes, I have an 11 yo slender built and a 9 yo.
I like your Blowin In the Wind T-shirt too, having been born and raised in Windmill country (the Netherlands), when I get back there every so often I can’t get over how many more modern windmills (and w.m.parks) are sprouting up over there. It’s flat and windy so the Dutch are taking advantage of the natural elements they have plenty of: Wind & Water!
A suggestion for filming when putting the ingredients in the Vitamix: instead of going back and forth from the cart to the VM, I think it would be easier on the eyes to put the VM container on the cart while Annmarie adds the ingredients one by one. After all ingredients are in, then transfer it to the base and blend. Anyhow, making borscht after seeing this video will never be the same. The kids will be wondering why I’ll be laughing and then they may want some!
One last thing: congrats on the Steelers’ win… my husband couldn’t believe that his Cowboys blew it in the end and it was even TO’s b’day too.

    Wel

Okay, I just made some borscht! Let me say, I have made traditional cooked borscht many times over the years, from many Russian recipes, many different ways. I think this raw borscht is tastier than all of them! And it took a fraction of the time to make that traditional cooked borscht takes. Very awesome! I’m sitting here eating it right now and thought, “I ought to go thank Kevin and Anne Marie for this awesome food I’m eating, courtesy of their generosity.” So here I am. Thank you!

Hello from a snowy cold swedish morning

What colors other then Black will the T-shirt come in ? When ever they are available will you be sending international orders as well ? Are there both woman and men sizes ? if so I want a L and a XL in womans size.
I wish we had the vidalia onions here in sweden, very potent eating any other types raw.
Lived in Florida for many years so I miss eating those sweet onions.
Thank you for all your great information

Thanks for the recipe, but isn’t black pepper considered an irritant especially for a raw fooder? Not crazy about the t-shirt for a few reasons: I don’t wear t-shirts, I don’t wear black, and I don’t like wearing messages with so many words and all boxed in like that…(sorry, I’m a flower child and prefer to display images of beauty) I do think the more clothing advertising with raw lifestyle choices people wear the better though. Like maybe a beautiful picture of a luscious apple and the words “just eat an apple”…things like that: simple, beautiful, and with very few words I think get more attention, and are more affective. Love you both, keep on rawkin! ~Laura Sutton

I eat beets, but I still don’t like them. I guess I’ll have to try borscht now. The T-shirts are cute and I’d like two large in black. Why don’t you wait until after the holidays so you don’t have to rush it. Thanks for the great show!

My family is Polish and I’ve eaten cooked Borscht my whole life. I can’t wait to try your raw version. With your experience with candida, what you think about eating beets and other high sugar veggies?

I love the T-shirts. Can you make a white shirt with black printing?
I wear a small. No rush to get it before the Holidays.

Hi Guys . . . soup looks like a winner . . . will try as soon as I get to the store for some beets. I love the tee — would get it after Christmas — probably a large (can you get different “cuts”?) — a womens and a mans are usually different styles. I would be interested in a color other than black also. I enjoy laughing with you both — thanks!! Mary from NJ

I love your shows, people! Please, do not stop making them; for me,they are the only daily inspirations to continue on the age-defying and energizing raw-food path.
You are so generous in sharing your lives and passions with us – may you be richly blessed with all the abundance that this world can offer…actually I know that you have been already blessed and more is coming to you – just wait!
Your borsch is wonderful – very tasty and so easy to prepare. I tried adding some dill or coriander(cilantro)into the soup – it’s good!
Also, if you have freshly sqeezed carrot and/or pineapple juice, pour those in – let me know if you like it…
T-SHIRT…sounds good; I want one sometime after Christmas. Would like different colour though…and what about the cost for canadians? My size – small or medium – depending on the manufacture’s standards.
Keep rawking, guys. I love you!!!

Okay Kevin and Ann Marie. I’m going to join in here and say that Csilla and I appreciate you two as well. Thank you for all of your sharing. Are the shirts organic cotton and how much are they? We are both medium sized, but I think Csilla might be interested in one of the tight woman shirts if you can get them that way. We also have a little guy who is about 16 months so would like to know about that size as well.
    Keep it up!

I love the soup, and hoping if I cut the beet in smaller pieces my blender can handle(it’s an old Osterizer, not up to Vitamiz yet). Or those same veggies would be great shredded in food processor with a ginger dressing as a salad. Either way, I will be looking for beets tomorrow at the farmer market.

T-shirt size would be an XL or 1x (not sure how they are measured), but I’m not worried on the time. I really liked the one you were wearing in this episode as well :)

The borscht was beautiful – and what a fun show today. :)

Cool design on the t-shirt!! I would like one of these…but I don’t look good in a man’s black, boxy tee. Could you print some in a more feminine style or a vintage type tee?

By the way, Kevin..when I was typing heather grey above, I also typed “healther” – hehe! :-D
