Are Grains and Legumes Bad for You – The Renegade Health Show Episode #178

Smita asked a great question on the blog the other day…

“Are grains and legumes bad for you?”

She had read about this on a website and wanted to know who was right about all of this.

Today, I talk about who’s right as well as how much water to drink, and a few other issues.

I also (again) show everyone that we DON’T use our microwave. :-)

Take a look…

Your question of the day: What should we call Rebecca, our new superstar team member?

Great post Kevin, I really respect your approach to recommend that people be aware and pay attention to their body as opposed to spewing dogma. I agree that there’s spotty data out there on legumes. In some cases these things suck up just about anything from the soil and that could include organophosphates and organochlorines. That means the “bad” stuff is not a result of the legume itself but rather the xeno-estrogenic compounds which are messing with the body.

GREAT WORK! Thanks for all you do.

Previously to going raw I always had problems digesting beans. Speaking of beans, anyone know of any great indian raw food recipe books?

I don’t think that humans are particularly grain or legume eaters. I found both to be rather clogging with the exception of possibly millet. Like the primates, we are leaf and fruit eaters and that’s what I’ve thrived on.

Welcome to the Renegade Health family, Rebecca! How great to be part of a trio of teachers in health and wellness, providing super resources for the community :) In my line of work we have a board of bookers working together to promote myself and others as independent contractors. We call our booking co-workers agents.

Sounds to me like the Regegade Health show has a new super agent (Rebecca) to help with radical living and education to share the wealth with us all. I would title your new member in the triad something along a “Super Agent”, “Renegade Agent”, “Deputy Agent” etc.

Whether you coin the term with “Agent” or not.. since how great the agents in my career are for promoting my well-being, having new “Super Agent” on board the show is great for the benefit of our continuing career in health education. Thanks, Rebecca! And thank you again for another great show!

    DebB -
I have had similar video trouble. But it seems to follow a simple rule: when resources get scarce using Firefox (and possibly other browsers as well), the video play is the first thing you’ll notice that suffers. Simply re-starting the browser and/or the whole computer often does it, making sure not to browse with too many tabs or windows open. Updating versions is recommended, too. Failing that, try seeing if you have all the latest “video-play plug-ins” and get these downloaded and installed, as software that deals with this is always being updated. Apparently this is a common problem: the symptom is a “2 second play” and then no more video. Hope these tips help.

Really enjoyed today’s episode, Kevin, even though I don’t have a ton of interest in these topics. (For other faithful readers who may be horrified by my candor, please understand that non-vegetarian, non-raw foodie types also love and respect the Giannis…) I share your fervor for coated dental floss; for me, it’s the only way to go and it’s soooo good for your oral hygiene. I agree with you regarding the “bad” substances (i.e., packaged, hydrogenated, chemically “enhanced” foods, artificially sweetened things, cigarettes) but would beg indulgence from those with strong differing opinions as to personal preferences for cooked foods that include animal protein and minimally processed carbs, etc. There is more than enough room in this great world, within reasonable parameters, for informed intelligent people to believe in opposing culinary and nutritional viewpoints. And, as for those who shudder at the thought of you and AM using a microwave (even though you’ve made it clear that you don’t,) well – it’s just a microwave…not a WMD. So, there are some thoughts from what many of your followers would surely consider to be “the dark side”. I only post this because I think that it is useful for all of us to consider, from time to time, what reasonable people reasonably disagree about.

BTW, I would call Rebecca…..”Rebecca”! When I practiced law, I had paralegals…maybe Rebecca can be your Para-Renegade.

    Keep up the great work………….L.

I am not sure who Rebecca is I must have missed the information, so I am just going to make up a name… Let’s see I like music so how about Rockin’Raw Rebecca.

I do have a question.. totally off topic. During the Rawkathon I remember Cherie Soria talking about E3LIVE and how she used it every morning. She looked so fabulous and healthy that I thought I would try it as an added supplement. I am wondering how much is too much when it comes to using E3LIVE? Do you use it Kevin?

Thanks sooooo much for addressing my question, that was very helpful!!!!

I will start experimenting with the lentils/legumes. Raw Monkey, since I have just recently been so educated about “raw” foods I’m definitely going to have to do some research on indian raw food recipe books since all I eat is indian food!

One thing if anyone wants to help me answer, I know its a dumb question but what do I subsitute for a microwave while at work! All I use is the microwave! Ayurvedic medicine states that we should eat our food warm to help ease the digestive fire. I work as a nurse on the floor I am limited to only a microwave.

You mention in this episode that you drink a gallon or so of green juice a day. How much produce is this?? I am interested in green juices, but would like a rough estimate as to how much produce I am going to need to buy on a weekly basis. A gallon appears to be a ton of produce!

    Hi Kevin

How right you are about the lack of scientific knowledge about diet. No-one has ever replicated the research of Sir Robert McCarrison, Drs Weston Price and Frances Pottenger. All three showed that a diet of local unprocessed foods was crucial for well-being. There is also too much emphasis in research on separate components in the diet and not on what combinations people actually eat. Jamie Oliver took obese, unhealthy people to remote Pakistan and in a month they reversed their high blood pressure, lost weight but also experienced a change in attitude to one that was more positive and caring. Not that I would recommend the meat eating that was part of the diet but the programme on the experiment did show a way of moving towards well-being without drugs. Gabriel Cousens’ DVD on raw food and diabetes is another example.

Forgive me for assuming the worst. The problem is, so many are overly concerned about their image and so fearful about what others think of them that they are extremely overcautious and operate as such.

I have been posting my words on many websites and forums for a few years, now. It is so easy to be banned and have posts erased/suppressed. This happens over and over again to me (I was once banned from a forum and my post erased merely for listing several examples of complete protein plant foods!). It does not even make much of a difference how I word my messages; I could be as soft as a stoned nun or as vicious as an FDA agent on a trip to a veganic farm, it would not matter. The result is the same: Scorn, suppression, debarment and condemnation are all common responses.

I post more often than not on dietary issues and animal justice issues. These are the very issues that people (who are the object of my posts) are very quick to be up in arms about. This is because they cannot accept the truth; they cannot cope with the implications and they are totally unready for a paradigm shift. They fight and fight to defend their indefensible ways. If they were to accept even a little thing, then that could open the doors to the full truth, that what they do, concerning meat, is not only the cause of great suffering in the world but will likely kill them too. As the famous quote says, it is easier to change a person’s religion than their diet. I have been banned from two sites during the past few weeks! Ironically I was banned for ‘condemnation without discussion.’ This was ironic because, instead of discussing the issue I was raising (comparison of meat eating with Nazism, African slave trade, etc.) with me, they banned me and silenced me (so they would not have to discuss it with me, but can sustain their delusion).

Mercola’s minions have banned me from his site many times too, because I recommended compassionate alternatives to the deleterious and cruel products (snake oils) that he pushes.

So I am glad to hear that you permit free speech (with the exception of worthless abuse) on your site, Kevin.

Such nice comments for me, thanks for that!

I think it’s funny that someone said Rawbecca, because I’m actually now ‘Superfood Girl’, formerly known as “Rawbecca”…felt I needed an update with my name, that’s where ‘Superfood Girl’ came in. :-)

But as far as a job title, I’m still deciding – I really like the word “RenegAide”, I just think that’s just TOO clever!

Speaking of Produce, we would love to see a show of you guys shopping at the co-op or wherever it is you spend your time and money. Our organic produce bill can be $80 to $100 per week. We now have a couple of Chard plants and some Kale. If we lived in a cooler climate we’d have that all year long but here in FL it’s tough to grow greens except through the winter. Anyway, keep up the great work.

    Heyup Kevin,

You talk about using floss which really is something you might want to look further into what it is made from…regular commercial brands of floss contain all sorts of checicals similar to toothpaste…if the stuff is waxed then it should be beeswax as it’s the least toxic of them all….up to the individual if they consider it to be an animal product, which, to my logic it is as an insect produced it.

I personally would use hemp yarn or some other non-treated string to use as floss…you could soak it in a mint infusion beforehand to help freshen breath and swill with it afterwards!

    Some ideas anyways…:-)

They’re kind of heavy for me.

    Hey Kevin,

you asked ideas about dental floss. flossing was not something I could do on a regular basis.
so i searched around and found a product called Eez-Thru Flossers sold by G-U-M. have tried many others and they shred on my teeth. these are the only ones that work for me. and I use them till they are shredded. so I get many uses, unlike floss you throw most of it away. and you can keep one of these things in your pocket. may not be the best ever yet it gets the job done.
    hope this helps

    Blessings

Hello, I am new to the Raw community and I can only tell you that you are the first one to introduce me to it all thru ur shows on Miro.com and my spirit just witnesses to the Raw eating. I am attempting to go raw and usually have been eating fruit in the morning , sometimes a green juice from Wild by Nature when I can afford it and salad at lunch. At night I do a vegan meal. I am still having a hard time during the weekends and have slipped on pizza and/or cheese calzone…. yuck! I know. I really desire to go all Raw as I have a lot of physical ailments to conquer ie. arthritis in the form of creaking knees and hips which cause me to limp as well as severe asthma, severe depression and lack of energy and obesity.. I went on a Master Cleanse for 43 days and the diet I have described above has been the outcome of it. It is a great improvement for me but I wish to continue evolving. I have had a real lack of self discipline in my life.
What do you think of the Master Cleanse?
Also, Victoria Boutenko (again discovered thru you) suggests that making a green smoothie in the Vitamix is healthier than juicing because you still get the fiber. What say you?
I love your enthusiasm and appreciate you and your wife’s teaching.
Also do you know of any Raw communities/groups on Long Island? specifically Suffolk County?

    Tnx, Lu

Hello Kevin, I sure look forward to all your emails and shows you put on. I am really loving this raw food eating thing. I use a Blentec Blender and it puts my Vita Mixer to shame. This Blender does not need any plunger at all. It sucks things right down to the blades. Maybe you can show people the Nut Milk bags and where to get them. I just started using them myself and now I juice all the time, as cleanup is so fast. Thanks for your comments on what happend to you on the Cacao. For me this stuff is just like taking Speed. I took Diet pills in the past and this Cacao makes me feel just like they did. So I am not a big fan of the stuff and think people should be real carful with it. Oh and what is on your page that you offer for 9.99 a month? Is there alot of videos on there? Can you Download them? Do you put new ones on there all the time? Please let me know. I sure would love your email to as you questions from time to time. Well Keep up the fantastic work your doing. It will help many Doug in Calif.
