After A Visit to the Holistic Dentist and a Park Workout – The Renegade Health Show Episode #159

Today…

We went to the dentist.

I have to admit, it’s been a while. But we’ve really never had any complaints until recently.

After my fruit smoothie experiment that has gotten me a nasty case of candida (to be confirmed next week with a IgA, IgG, IgM Assay) and some aching teeth, I figured it was time to get a check up and cleaning.

You can find out what he told us in this episode… (essential for raw foodies with teeth issues or who don’t want teeth issues!!!!)

You’ll also see us fit in a quick 5 minute park workout on the way home since we were stuck in traffic.

Take a look now, your teeth will thank you…

Your question of the day: When was the last time you went to the dentist?

Click here, scroll down to the bottom of the page and leave your confession here… it’s safe with us! :-)

Here’s the link to our dentist in case you’re in CT! Tell him you saw him here! Leonard Kundel, DMD :-)

Live Awesome!

Last time I went to the dentist was August 25th actually. I go twice a year no matter what and have had all the mercury fillings from my youth removed as well. My goal is to keep my teeth well into old age and no dentures!! Oral health is not just cosmetic but as vital as all other wellness protocals. I do not use any floride products and do not use florinated water either. I think most commercial toothpastes using floride are a health hazard and another way that the public ingests toxins into their bodies.

I went to the dentist two weeks ago, actually. My dentist sends me a little card in the mail every six months to remind me to come in.

The dentist was AMAZED at my teeth. I’ve had a lot of tooth problems for years now, especially gum problems. They have a little thing they stick in to the gum “pocket”, next to your tooth, to measure how much your gums are receding. My pockets have been getting worse and worse with every visit and I’ve had tons of plaque. I remember having so much plaque a few years back that the dentist chose to numb my mouth for the cleaning.

Well, this visit — after six months on a vegan whole-food diet with a slowly increasing amount of raw foods — I was in and out of the office so quickly it nearly made my head spin! I had very little plaque so the cleaning was very short and my gum pockets have stopped receding. (I’m curious to see if it will start to reverse, the longer I stay on a healthy diet. Maybe my gum pockets will get smaller? I can’t wait to find out!)

Both the dentist and his hygienist were amazed and asked me, “what are you doing???” I was so thrilled to see such dramatic positive results from changing to a healthier diet (and continuing to transition to a healthier and healthier diet as I go.)

Thanks, Kevin and Annmarie, for all you do to help change the health of the world! You guys are definitely part of my “health team” as I recover from diabetes and turn my life and health around.

i just went yesterday. i am going through the process of getting old amalgams removed and replacing them with composit resins. i have two quadrants done…two to go! i am really excited about the way my teeth will look when the procedures are complete. i totally agree with janice (above comment) and follow her no-floride regime. i just want to add that flossing is extremely important as well and i do it twice a day. that might seem extreme but you have got to do it at least once a day..please. (coming from a former dental assistant) at 20 and 17 years old…my children do not have any amalgam in their teeth. i could go on about sealants and stuff..but that would be getting off subject. love the ride in the car….was that your super cool Mustang in the background?

Last dentist visit was in 1994 & my dad is a dentist – now retired. Since I have been eating raw & organic, off the dairy & processed foods, off the fluoridated water, any minor dental issues from the past have gone away.

Visits to the dentist are sooooo important!! I didn’t visit the dentist from approx 1991 to 2001 – - and man, did I pay the price.

    Life Lesson #2051 – No excuses-just go!!

I also “learned” that comparison shopping between dentists is perfectly acceptable, especially if a lot of work is neccesary. I interviewed three – chose the right one for me (not based solely on price) – and took back “control” of my mouth ;-) . It is so worth it.

Oh, Kevin – you know how I love those bear crawls :-) ….but…what a great idea…stopping when it strikes you..and exercising. You guys are the best!! hugs, Dede

    Great show!
I go to the dentist twice a year and he does mainly cleaning, the last few years I only had one cavity, and I am a once again comitted vegan. (long story short, had a strong craving for cheese and gave in a few times)
Really interesting info about kids’ teeth. My daughter has, from what I can tell, teeth with space between, she even has a gap at the bottom in the middle. She still snores sometimes pretty badly, it could be her throat, her tonsils are huge. She was scheduled to have them removed, had to wait very long for the best specialist in town but we still backed out the very last minute. It just really freaks me out to have her go under general anasthetic and have a major operation like that.
I still have not tried your circuit workouts, but I am very intrigued. I am so busy running around during the day, it could be the perfect thing for me to do even with my daughter.

I see the dentist regularly and floss and brush religiously….love that floss. I’m not sure about holistic dentistry – depending on the procedure, I kinda like numbing agents and some well-placed sedation. Very entertaining segment…I think Annmarie would have to put me in traction after those bear crawls! Enjoy the weekend and the beautiful weather we’re having in the tri-state area.

Went Raw Vegan cold cucumber two months ago because of two painful abcesses, receding gums, anemia, and a scheduled shoulder surgery.
    Dentist wanted immediate root canals.
I decided to go to Raw Spirit Fest instead.
Been using Oralive and Super Gum Healing Oil from Ascended-Health.com for one month.
    No pain, gums are un-receding.
Iron count has gone from 19 (Normal 40 to 155) to 32 in two months of 100% Raw Vegan.
All this along with six weeks recuperating from major shoulder surgery.
Feeling the Best Ever and regaining perfect health.
Thanks K&A, David Wolfe, Anthony Anderson, and the Whole Raw Vegan community.

I had some dental work a few months ago. I go to the dentist 2 times a year.

Thanks for showing us adlib workouts, but I don’t think I would do the bear crawl (myself) in public. It was fun watching you, though.

I would like comment on a holistic dentist. You have heard that a crowded restaurant is an indication of good food? A holistic dentist is no different. A good indication is to plant yourself in their office and see how many patients go in and out the office. I neglected to do that and my holistic dentist was a nightmare.

Please do a dental show, and talk about other alternative to cleaning your teeth such using tooth powders, chewing on rosemary or wheat grass after a meal, (it help really clean the teeth), and rinsing your mouth with celtic or himalayan salt water (spring water if you can afford it). I am pretty poor and I can’t afford to be unhealthy, and going to the dentist is an economical nightmare. I don’t use toothpaste, yet my boyfriend does. It’s genetic he thinks, but he has cavities all the time and within the four years we’ve been together, I have yet to have a cavity. And of course emphasize diet, that is obvious. I have question about Dr.Price the famous holistic dentist who did many studies on cultures and the conditions of their teeth. He actually recommended raw milk. What do you think about this? Thank you! PS please let your wife do some more of the shows, she is really funny and I like her. Thanks

After reading about Pottinger and his cats, it all makes sense why our teeth are so crooked and crowded. My teeth were horrible so I got braces when I was younger.

I do like getting my teeth regularly cleaned. Lately I’ve only been using tooth powder to brush, because I read that toothpastes leave a coating that prohibits the body’s way of producing enamel on the teeth. I don’t know if it’s true, or not, but I like the powder.

I thought of a question when you were doing your exercises. I have double jointed hips. I often wonder if I’ll have problems when I’m in my 100s (because I intend on living a long life!), since I hear a lot about older people falling and breaking hips. Is there something I should be doing to keep my hip joints healthy since I have the problem of them being double jointed (I can’t recall the real term for this, but I’m sure you know what I mean)?

Lots of love to both of you!

    Wendi

    Kev,

What do you recommend as a good oral hygiene cleanser.
I use diluted food grade hydrogen peroxide (1.5%) as a gargle AND OraMD (essential oils of peppermint, spearmint, almond oil)

Do you have other suggestions (other than flossing and brushing)

    Thanks

I was at the dentist in Dec. last year and he did a root canal and gave me a temporary cap for a broken tooth. The upper part of the tooth has since turned black and several of my teeth have crumbled away and the previous dentist I saw said to have all my teeth removed (as they were beyond repair) and get dentures. I need a miracle to regenerate my teeth and prevent the rest from crumbling away. Any help gratefully accepted.

Been almost a year since a dentist visit. But as soon as my funds provide I’m going.

My question is about vision. Is there any way to recover decent vision to where glasses are no longer needed? I remember Dr Thomas Lodi mentioning our rods and cones are rebuilt every 4 days or so, wouldn’t this indicate vision could also be recovered? Also, how bad are contacts for your eyes?

wow Kevin…it seems that everyone had more luck then I did with my dentist. I was eating raw for 6 months, and I would say that included about 4 raw fruit servings a day, including blueberries, rasberries, goji berries, apples, et. I had so much plaque on my teeth from the blueberries that I had to return for a cleaning 3 months later. Also, I was on the verge of getting 2 cavities, and my teeth and gums were really hurting, just as you explained happened to you. In the past I haven’t had these types of problems. I was so mad because I had less dental problems then when I eat meat and stuff. I would love for you to do an interview with a holistic dentist!

What I learned was I decreased my fruit intake and my teeth are feeling so much better. I also brush in between meals more.

For anyone that loves and eats a lot of fruit, I strongly recommend you listen to Brian Clement from the Hippocrates Health Institute. He is a raw food proponent, but he has done blood tests and the fructose from fruit gets absorbed through the body EXACTLY LIKE REGULAR SUGAR – NO DIFFERENCE!

ThIS INFORMATION FROM BRIAN CLEMENT HELPED ME FEEL SO MUCH BETTER….

    Hello everyone,
I need to get off subject here, but I have been meaning to ask this questions for a while now. Has anyone experienced hair loss while on a raw diet. I am 80% raw and the hair loss worries me. Any suggestions?
    thanks,

I was going to the dentist every 4 months because of unhealthy gums that are receding. But I didn’t go to my last one because at my last visit the hygenist gave me a a prescription sample toothpaste that was 100% flouride and said to rub that on my teeth and gums only don’t swallow! I threw the tube out and have been searching for a holistic dentist in my area but there are none! I’m not sure what to do. I know I need to go back and get checked and I also have one mercury filling that I’d like to take out. Any suggestions? Should I go back to the dentist and ask for another hygenist?

Why did you have to remind me Kevin?!!! I am due for a checkup this month :-(
The last time I went to the dentist was 6 months ago when I went to get a filling refilled as it had fallen out. The old filling was a mercury amalgam one and I may have swallowed it!! I don’t know where it went or when exactly it fell out. I just noticed one day there was a hole where it should be.
Before that checkup I hadn’t been to the dentist in literally years – possibly 7 or 8 years. Woopsie. My teeth were fine though except for the missing filling (which is the only one I have).
Cool workout Kevin, looks like fun :-)

so what did the dentist do? anything? any recommendations?

i went to the dentist numerous times not very long ago, and i got probably 5 or 6 holes filled, cost a fortune..
bad teeth runs in the family, and apparently my 80% fruit diet doesn’t help much. unfair when i think of how many of my friends have excellent teeth, even tho they live on junk and sweets.
    thats life tho!

I have never had any cavities. As a raw foodist, i awoke one day with massive pain. I took giant doses of ORGANIC CALCIUM BY NORTH COAST NATURALS (CALCIUM, MAGNESIUM, IRON AND SILICON) COMBINED WITH A SEPARATE VITAMIN D3 SUPPLEMENT, my teeth stopped hurting right away and all the dozens of black spots disappeared in about 48 hours.
