A Raw Spirit Festival Review While Stuck in Phoenix – The Renegade Health Show #141

When we showed up at the airport, we had no idea our tickets would be canceled…

Apparently Orbitz and Air Tran had a little communication breakdown and we ended up not having a flight.

The worst part of it was that they expected us to take care of it!

So now we’re stuck in Phoenix… and it’s hot!

Anyway, we’re making the best of it… in today’s show you’ll get a review of the Raw Spirit Festival and a funny story that happened to us over the weekend. ;-)

Go ahead and watch it now…

Your question of the day: What’s your worst travel experience?

snowed in after waiting to be de-iced at the Philly airport 27th in line ,Jan of 05′ …We were headed for Flordia… snow coming down four hours on the airplane only to be grounded. AND not able to leave, trains taxis’ and any other way NOT possible. They gave 400 people tiny pillows and mylar blankets and we all found floor space, after they closed the bars. We also got crackers and one coffee. We were finally able to go home the next day after 7am…

When I was about 10, My family went camping across the western US. Somewhere in California at a campsite called “The Tulles”, we were greeted by screams coming from the barn followed by a large woman carrying a butcher knife and covered with blood. We soon found out she was butchering pigs and that was the screams we heard. Needless to say, I did not sleep much that night!

Worst experience was when a few friends and I were on our way to Miami but had to stop in Atlanta to transfer. Our airline carrier was AirTran (which I have never taken again) and upon arriving told us they had over booked the flight and we would have to wait for another one. There was no use in talking to anyone as the only help they offered was a food voucher (like I was going to use that :) So 13 hours later and spending the night sleeping on a bench inside the airport we finally made it on a flight to MIA.

My worst experience traveling was recently taking a flight out of JFK to Southern California. The American Airline got us seated and we were bucketed in and ready to go and all the electricity inclucing air ventalation all went out. They tried several times to start the engines and it look like it was just about to go and “vump”. Everything when out. I felt like calling a nearby airplane and using the car jumper cables. It was bad. And a bit scary to say the least. That went on for over a hour. The pilot at one point said, “I’m fed up with this plane.” That was enough of a reason to get up and asked to get off the plane. Which we did and a dozen or so followed us. We went through customer service to reshedule our flight. At one point they were going to get a hotel for us. Then they said we had to stay in the airport terminal all night. Finally at 1 AM in the morning (5 hours later)they finally switched planes and we took off. My advise… check the airlines that have the newest jets. The pressures that airlines are having these days to keep it ecoomomical and safe is really a challenge. Send blessings to all. And Kevin, YES that was a health question. Safety first, ALWAYS!

once a few years ago i was leaving Scranton Pa
at 10 am…………….the flight was late because of fog……when that flight got to Philadelphia
i missed my flight………….so they got me on a flight to Tampa with a connecting flight to Pensacola Florida….well when i got to Tampa the flight to Pensacola had already left ….so they booked mo on a flight to Charlotte NC where i had to sit for several hours to get the next flight to
Pensacola.. i truly thought i was going to die before getting home…so what started at 8am in Scranton ended up with me getting into Pensacola at 12:30am..i swore i would never fly again, but i have!
i should have got a motel like you did instead of
getting so many sky miles in 16+ hours that should have taken me 5 hours………..oh and i had bought special food for my neighbors who were picking me
up in Pensacola and it was spoiled so had to be thrown out ……………..

I know what you mean about the shuttle. We had an experience with the shuttle getting back to our hotel on the second night of the fest. The worst travel experience was flying back from Orlando to Austin one December. We had left our car at the Austin airport. There was a little ice in Dallas, so they wouldn’t even let our non-stop flight from Orlando to Austin (landing at 4 p.m. way after ice would have melted and way before it would have formed again if there was any which there wasn’t) take off. We had to arrange another flight to Houston, rent a car and drive to the Austin airport to pick up our car. By the time we arrived, it was dark, cold and our car in the parking lot had a flat tire. Having packed to be in Sunny Florida, we had no coats or gloves to wear while changing the tire.

In my first trimester when preggo with my son we flew to England to meet my inlaws and Air Canada chose to serve the stinkiest seafood breakfast platter ever – no substitutions … there are not enough airsick bags in the world that could have fixed that one for me … I feel ill just thinking about it now!

I so look forward to my daily visits with you. I sure wish I still lived in New Canaan, I would ask you to come over and we could eat and visit.

A few weeks after a plane went down on Long Island because it ran out of fuel and many people lost their lives, I was on a trip from Portland, OR stopping in Salt Lake City and then on to NYC. Due to thunderstorms in Salt Lake City the pilot took us over the Colorado Rockies, then announced that we would be landing in Grand Junction because we were running low on fuel. The plane errupted in hysteria and we landed safely about 20 minutes later. I was quiet, but so scared, that I wished I was wearing “Depends”, I really came close to loosing control. We never got back in the air for another 7 hours. It was truly the longest trip of my life.

Enjoy your hotel-motel, tomorrow is another day. Safe travels.

    LOL!
This past December & January we did a tour of Southern USA states, elevating awareness of Terminal Markets / eating raw / living a cruelty-free lifestyle / going raw organic vegan / on & on & on it went, but FIRST:
We stopped in to visit the lavatories at the Birmingham, Alabama airport and encountered semi-automatic plastic toilet seat covers ~
TOTALLY COUNTER INTUITIVELY, they need a button to be pressed BEFORE you sit down!
    LOL!
We figured this out AFTER we’d “gone”! LOL!
Yes, on DIRTY SEATS, yet here we are, impetigo-free ready to tell the tale! :-)
It seems in Birmingham Airport “cutting edge” means a dispenser at the rear of the toilet seat with a collector on the other end and an “endless tube” of plastic being pulled from one end to the other of the toilet seat when you press the button: BEFORE YOU HAVE A SEAT!
    :-)
Never seen them anywhere else, and we DO “get around QUITE a bit! :-)

    AH!
    New Food of this week:
CABBAGE SALSA, from Maria’s in San Bernardino/Colton, CA ~ Between Reche Canyon & the 215, on Barton Road, in the Stater’s Plaza!
Think raw salsa with FINELY SHREDDED CABBAGE and SUPER FINELY GROUND BLACK PEPPER!
    OMGosh!
    ADDICTIVE TO THE MAX!
    :-)

I don’t really have any bad travel experiences to report as I haven’t done too much travelling in my lifetime so far. I’m hoping to change that as there’s a whole big world to see.
I didn’t really enjoy 12+ hour drives from London to Scotland to see my grandparents when I was younger, but at least I wasn’t the one driving!
I’m dying to know what you guys have up your sleeves for October. Give us a clue already!

    I have two:
    1. Freak snow storm in PA. Jack-knifed tractor trailer blocked the road for 8 hours. 3 miles from an exit, 2 children in the car, snow still falling, gas tank on empty so we only ran the car briefly to keep warm, no food except 1 poptart & a waterbottle.

    2. On a family trip, five of us missed our flight to Manchester, VT from Baltimore. There was a flight there every 2 hours. We spent the day on standby, dividing our group into seperate planes one at a time… all day long.

Bummer- 9 hours at the airport must have been a drag for you.

My phoenix trip was fine, though. I dropped off two RSF girls at the airport but I, myself had 4 hours to kill. I drove about 5 minutes from the airport heading towards a mountain ridge angling for a picture perfect giant cactus. When the road dead-ended there was a little sign for “mystery castle”. I walked up and around the castle and then I hiked up into South Mountain Park, seeing saguaro cacti, strange nests, a cool hiking trail and 2 caves.

One do-over… I’d have changed out of my sandals (cactus).

    Glad to have met you.

Don’t have any horror travel stories to share, but wanted to thank you for sharing yours. As tired, and perhaps as frustrated as you may have been, you still thought of us! It was great to hear your experiences at the Raw Festiv. in such a casual conservation. It made me feel like a close friend! Thanks, Lynn

I was having a great time on my trip but on the 3rd day (of my 8 day stay) I fell in the bathtub and fractured my ribs (OUCH!). Had to go to the emergency room and was in great pain throughout the rest of my trip. Really had a hard time getting home, especially carrying my luggage.
I really enjoy your show! Thanks for sharing your thoughts about the raw spirit festival. I agree with Lynn that you both have such a warm way of conversing to us that make us feel like you’re close friends!

My worst travel experience was driving down to L.A. from S.F. bay area (Calif) to see my parents for Thanksgiving. What should have been about a 10 hour drive turned into an 18 hour drive with the traffic being SOOO bad! I vowed never to do it again! I now visit my family BEFORE the holidays, by flying down.

Bad story? I dunno. Met my husband while I was hitchhiking… thirty years ago.
Different story, bad one: our foreign exchange student, from Japan, brought along her passport, but not all her “papers” as they were at our home, in Wisconsin, safely tucked away when we drove to Mexico. When we got to the border, they said,”Oh sure, she can come in, but she will not be able to go back into the United States!” Needless to say, after a grueling three day drive through beastly heat, there were tears. We did stay at a border town an extra day, while someome ‘overnighted’ the important papers to us. Whew! That girl had some stories to tell when she went home! (And she thought the worst part of being in the South was not being able to understand the language – actually the Southern drawl).

There are worse things than the Econo Lodge :o )

About four years ago we went to the Dominican Republic to see my sister get married. While my husband was getting a haircut in the salon at our resort the night before, the power went out. The hairdresser rushed to the front door and locked it, then instructed everyone to move to the back of the salon and get down incase it was an “attack by the Haitians”. Turned out to be a good old power outage, needless to say, we didn’t venture out much on that trip after that.
Looks like you guys had a great time, thanks for bringing us with you. Maybe you could do some future shows on raw foods and kids or balancing a raw food lifestyle with a cooked family. Jodie

Tried to fly out of Midway in Chicago 4:30pm day before Thanksgiving for a Turkey Trot in Dallas – flights were canceled due to “weather” – took the L (train) to O’Hare to try to get on a later flight out – they were all delayed and delayed and canceled and delayed – finally got out around 4am – landed – jumped in a rental car, drove straight to the start line, and ran an 8 mile turkey trot with no sleep, no food, and no coffee!

Very sorry to have missed Raw Spirit this year!!

Anyway for my travel horror story.

My 3 year old grandson and I flew from Las Vegas to Myrtle Beach, SC via Spirit Airlines (DON’T FLY SPIRIT)via Detroit. Flight was delayed 3 hours then cancelled because of weather in Laguardia. We stood in line for 3 hours to find out that they didn’t have any flights for 3 days to Myrtle Beach. The ticket agent got irritated with me (I guess because it was about 10:00 at night and she was tired, and so were we, plus I had a 3 year old with me). All she wanted to do was give me a refund of the entire round trip (so she said). I had to take the refund because I had to get another flight. Of course, then we had to get a room on our own because I asked for a refund. By the time we got to the room it was 1:00 in the morning and then we had to leave for the airport at 5 in the morning to leave via US Air to Myrtle Beach. Got there early, no problem. The US Air ticket ended up costing us about $1,500 and Spirit AIrlines still refuses to give me a refund, so I am still battling with them.
