Fellow health seekers may like ot know about a study done over 70 years ago into the nature of health. They found that health has its own processes quite distinct from those of disease. The archives of the Peckham Experiment can be accessed at www.thephf.org
The researchers may not have been raw vegan but they were advocates of organic food, including raw milk and whole grains. They found that less than 10% of their research population were free from pre-disease or disease conditions. What I love about their findings is that people must be free to exercise choice in their lives in order to be healthy!

Hello Kevin:
My intention wasn't to respond to this post in particular but I'm not sure how to go about asking a question so I though I'd do it this way. I hope it's okay. I've been struggling with the idea and use of supplements. To provide a little bit of history, I've been eating whole foods, cooked and raw for the past three years and have seen many great and awesome changes which is when I really began to learn the effects of foods on my body. I also began to learn that alot of the changes one experiences in the beginning has more to do with the elimination of disease producing foods, and we all know what they are, than with the adoption of wholesome foods. Looking at different raw food sites, I can see right away, that there are many disagreements among raw foodists. Some say no to supplements like Dr.Doug Graham and to some extent Frederic Patenaude. I also began to wonder what they mean by 'supplements.' Is it anything in a glass bottle that's been powdered even though, supposedly it's marketed as a WHOLE FOOD supplement? And if it's labeled 'whole food', does it really make it a whole food? David Wolfe as well as Shazzie, sell many products that are SUPERFOODS in powdered form sold in glass bottles or different packages, but are these products supplements--processed and manufactured like other vitamins and minerals? I'm struggling with the idea of whole foods and what constitutes a whole food. It all started when I came across an interview with you and Dr.Doug Graham. According to him, vegetables and fruits, nuts and seeds are whole foods, hemp protein for example, or any other powdered product in a bottle for that matter, isn't whole anymore but is an isolated, empty caloric item. It really made me take a step back and question why I purchase some of the things I do. I was amazed when opening my cupboard, that I owned a wholefood multivitamin, a garden veggie product marketed as a whole food as well, a herbal tea tincture, enzymes, probiotics, spirulina, a greens product highly recommended by Mike Adams, some colon cleansing products, etc. Ånd I began to wonder whether I unconsciously purchase these products because I 'lack', because somewhere inside me, I feel that 'I'm' not enough, that my body can't possibly maintain health through vegetables, fruits, nut/seeds, grains, leafy greens, etc. Bottom line, the fear word comes through. If I don't supply myself with these products, will my health fail? And I think that's a question we have to ask ourselves. So to make a long story short, what is your understanding of wholefoods in the raw food movement?

Being healthy means...

...I have the energy and focus to accomplish my goals.
...I am excited and passionate about my life.
...I can face challenges comfortably and with a clear head.
...I can dance when I feel like dancing.
...I have enough in my nurturing storehouse to share with others and be a positive example and inspiration to them.
...I can live my dreams.
...I will be confident and secure enough to share myself with others.
...I can speak out intelligently and sincerely about my struggles to lift others up out of theirs.
...I can smile without needing a reason - being alive and healthy is enough.
...I can feel my feelings without judgment and allow them to just to be.

I like to think health without limits…filled with.infinite possibilities. Optimal health sort of signifies a sort of limit. A positive upper limit perhaps but something that sort of put me in a mind set of something to achieve. I like to experience health as a never ending process. No matter how well I feel there is always something else I can do to reach even higher.

When I think of health I think of creatively and aliveness. I think of being calm and confident. I think of balance between mind, body and spirit. I think of colorful fresh fruits and vegetable. Being out doors in the fresh air and sunlight. Moving and dancing. There’s a lightness both within my own mind as well as my body and with the rest of the world around me.

Our western society defines health as not being sick. And that’s it! The possibilities of unlimited health is not even a conscious thought….. ever. So many people are thinking “God, get me through this day!” And that’s it. Then you wonder why they kick the bucket the next day. How can it not be. They asked only that they get through this day and that’s what the universe handed them!!

I wish everyone unfolding health, filled with love and creative joy.

Healthy means I have mental and physical alertness.
Healthy means I have the ability and desire to keep learning and trying new things.
Healthy means that if I can't do something it has nothing to do with age. It just means I can't do it.

Health is to be what humans were intended to be. The common sense to know that when humans came to "be", we only had good, pure, and fresh foods to survive on. We weren't intended to consume processed foods. To do so is to allow something foreign to enter one's body.
Health is to know that the human body was intended to be active. We were designed to be self-sufficient and actively seek out fuel for survival.
Finally, we are healthy when we live in harmony with our environment and inspire others by example to do the same. Thank you Kevin for endeavoring to spread the word.

Hi Kevin,
I'm so glad you shared what was going on in your mind. I too have been struggling with the "why" because of the stress I feel at times with my family. I am the odd ball in the bunch and my new lifestyle of raw food has become a real division between me and my husband. Though I am happier in my spirit and certainly feel better in my body, I am sad that he was not able to grow with me in this new way of living. Thanks for your encouragment.
