There’s a reason why diabetes is considered incurable by many doctors and health professionals.
It’s not because of genes or blood sugar levels, hormones or irreverable damage as you might expect them to say.
It’s an issue of the diabetes treatment information that is available to the public and who it’s being distributed by.
Recently, I met with a woman who runs a meal preperation business. We were talking about local events that we could put on as co-sponsors. The talk turned to diabetes and the increasing percentages of Type-2 Diabetes.
She had gone to her medical doctor and he had suggested a dietary plan for her (since diabetes runs in the family) so she would never have to worry about taking insulin or having any pre-diabetic issues.
I actually applaud him for being proactive! (Remember, most doctors aren’t evil, money grabbing monsters as some people seem to think.)
Anyway, I asked her if I could look at the meal plan and see what was recommended.
What I saw was shocking and I want to plead my case here so the world can see exactly what I saw…

Kevin
Was this to make me feel good? I would like to see something proactive. Could you investigate more on “80/10/10″ and then perhaps you can start the chain of good news. Let us just agree anything from away from “80/10/10″ is just bad health. Okay with that in place we can go to teaching/sharing good “80/10/10″ recipes and ways to enjoy “80/10/10″. I am going to unsubscribe after he next bad news email. Sorry to all the other so called raw food experts, but it is time to put their pocket books after good health.

I agree with you – we need to get the truth out there as much as we can. Recently I was on a flight from the UK back to the US and one of the airline stewards baled me up at the back of the aircraft to ask me how I looked so good (!!). I spent the next 1/2 hour telling her and two of her colleagues how all of the processed cooked foods, sugars and chemical additives they were consuming on a daily basis were at the heart of their health degeneration and premature aging, and when I finally took my seat they had all agreed to take a look at the way they were eating and to make some changes for the better. I have finally realized that I can change the world, but it’s one person at a time!

I don’t find this alarming, I find it a standard approach to the problem.
I have had Diabetes for over 30 years and now have it under control. I found I was able to control it by eating a mostly raw diet. I now eat 2 to 3 quarts of green smoothies per day and insert some rare meat every couple of days.
Diabetes has caused me to have several hospital stays to remove parts of my right foot because of un-healing ulcers and infections. My last visit was to remove the whole end of that foot.
When in the hospital, they supply a diet for the diabetic that is loaded with carbs. After eating their food they check your glucose and become alarmed that it is so high. They then run to get you an insulin injection.
My last stay with them was different. My wife imported all my food and I refused to eat hospital food. Needless to say, my glucose was great all day and night. I think they were very happy to see me discharged!

Wow Kevin that is horrifying, hard to believe but then you see it’s a pharmaceutical company. They are soon to be completely exposed. All your info is great to educate people. As I write this I am listening to NPR doing a piece on diabetes in the Native American community! Last time you offered the e-mail to the breast cancer people about those poisonous airline snack foods. I e-mailed them and of course, got no response. Thanks for the mark-ups and highlighting, I will forward that to my db – great work !

Great article. AND keep it coming. I am disappointed about people that can only talk about 80/10/10 as if that is the only “program” out there. So, I look forward to other exposures as this will help us help those that are actually the victims of these “treatments”. Excellent job.

Thank you Kevin and yes this will be passed on to both family and friends who are Diabetic and Pre-Diabetic.
Should 20/20 be contacted? How about Oprah Winfrey?
People need to know that this is coming from so called reliable sources.
Greg’s comments were right on the money of what I watched them do to my Dad while he was still alive. They wanted to feed him a diet of processed Ensure!!
Let’s have the world know that we are all responsible for our own health and it is up to US to check first.

This is pretty typical of what is being distributed to diabetics by the health care industry. My roommate has diabetes and I have attended many doctor visits with her to learn how to help her control her medications and diet. The result of what they have told her is that she is so confused she doesn’t know what to eat!
They seem afraid of straying too far from the same bad diet that contributed to people developing diabetes in the first place!

On Canada’s national news recently was a piece about hyperbaric oxygen therapy healing diabetic ulcers that regular medicine cannot heal. Yesterday the chiropractor mentioned that he was able to heal similar ulcers with a fairly new treatment called cold laser which is a light that makes cells behave more normally, thus getting rid of inflammation and it increases the blood flow to the treated area. As a former registered nurse it grieves me to see people losing limbs when the regular medical community won’t look beyond their brick buildings!!! Also, how little they know about nutrition being the beginning of health or disease.

Hi, I am new to your website. I will admit I eat only 1 meal a day raw at best but am very interested in making changes. I have a friend who is diabetic and was told recently that he has about 18 months to live because his kidneys are failing. What are some good resourses to read before approaching my (new) friend. Thanks Anne quirk_a@msn.com

Where did this doctor learn? His diabetic receipe is an excuse to keep someone sick and go to an early grave. I don’t eat that stuff, I would have a very hard time following these instructions. This is not only shocking, it ignorance of the worst kind. And coming from a doctor it is even worst of the worst. It is hard to beleive that an intelligent and educated man/woman can be so dum.

I’ve been raw for a while, and vegetarian for 8 years prior to that, and as a postgraduate student studying 3500 miles from where I live it is indeed a rare occurence that I eat meals with my family anymore.
But even now, my stepmother (who takes meds for heart problems and prediabetes) and my father (who takes meds for high cholesterol and triglycerides) constantly pester me about my diet, how I’m supposedly not getting proper nutrition, etc. They really have no idea what I eat on a regular basis, but apparently their family doctor told them that a raw food diet cannot possibly fulfill all nutritional requirements. (The average doctor, of course, takes one or less class in nutrition as part of formal training.)
YET…I am the one unaffected by cholesterol, diabetes, vision problems, and a host of other problems that run in my family and should have affected me by this age. Go figure.

I am so sad about this diet for diabetics. I would like to take some bagels and margarine an clobber who ever recommends it. actually now that I think about it, it is a diet for diabetics. It is to finish harming anyone diabetic. argg!! Leticia

Hi Kevin,
Thanks for the great report. When I read this kind of stuff it just makes me soooo angry. My Dad had diabetes and the diet they put him on horrified me. However his response was, well the Dr. said it was okay. My Dad has since passed away from complications from Diabetes and I believe all the drugs they had him on. He believed that he could eat whatever he wanted and then take his pills and it would all be okay. I agree with the person who said to get it out to 20/20 and Oprah…..people need to be told the truth. We are battling right now with my daughter in law who has high blood pressure and she is getting the same incorrect information. They have her so scared that she won’t stop taking the meds. even though they are making her sick and terrible mood swings. Any information that might help us to help her?
Keep up the awesome work. Together we can make a difference in the worlds health.

Ha! That was funny, Kevin! I liked the anticipation you aroused with the clicking to the next page with the “surprise!” of astra/zeneca sponsoring the ad.
Woah. That is pretty far out. I think it’s time for me to kick back with some fresh water and cacao beans….
peace!

I’m also eating raw food,
I’m a canibal (bite my own fingers)
Just joking, like with everything
not too much. Sure fastfood
is 4 sure not beneficial for diabetis.
But hey what’s ‘good’ 4 me it’s all
artificial and created long before we think
we did…Further to the past!

Hey.. no worries.. ALL hospitals believe in and USE a vegan diet for ALL thier worst-off patients to sustain them… IV drips in ICU!!
If I may add regarding the comment about 80/10/10 being the “only” program… after hearing/reading/trying the others, it’s like walking around the block first to get to the bathroom that’s attached to your master bedroom. Sometime’s the speed to get there is important, sometimes you can take the long way and not even realize it.
I simply offer to you that you try an experiment… how long would you give a relationship to see if it worked? 6 months? 18 months? You’re in a relationship with food, test it out.. if you find it doesn’t work for you, everything else that is out there now, still will be.
No judgement, no right or wrong… probably most of us want the best for ourselves and others when we mention these things with passion. Also, the 80/10/10 ratios can be used on any diet or food program… all programs work to the degree that they follow the laws of nature.
Go to Health! : )

What is 80/10/10?
12:40 pm on October 11th, 2007
Thank you for your spirit, time and effort.
I’m 57 and the longer I live this life, the more I understand human nature from my own experiences. In respect to all the negative comments about doctors, most everyone is hard pressed to sign on to anything new very quickly, even when it is staring them in the face. When so much time, effort and money has been invested in one’s beliefs and livelihood. and something new directly impacts a person’s ability to make a living, a time for adjustment is need (so denial or resistance sets in). That is why truth and change so often takes time.
I do agree that all of us are called to share our experience, strength and hope regarding health and any other truths we discover as we move through life, for true change does happen one person at a time, mostly by our example, and cannot be forced, for everyone resists force.
I think it would be great if Oprah were to pick it up. That would certainly take courage tho. Not many are willing to stand up to the big food and pharma interests. There are two that I am paying attention to tho. Ron Paul, who is running for President and Rema E. Laibow, MD. They are fighting for our health freedoms, which are constantly being attacked through the FDA and Codex. Her website is http://www.healthfreedomusa.org His is http://www.ronpaul2008.com

I just finished teaching a rawfood class to a group of mentally ill people, all sadly addicted to meds that their doctors insist they must take. very sad indeed. we can present the facts of good health and good food choices and just keep planting seeds… doesn’t surprise me about the dr. recommending fast food for the diabetic. I just shake my head nowadays.

Thanks for the article Kevin. Any information, good or bad, is information that will take people one step closer to their goals of good health. It’s no use burying one’s head in the sand. You have to hear the good and the bad. When I first discovered, a few years ago, that everything I learned about starches being complex carbs and healthy was a lie, I was really angry, especially since diabetes runs rampant in our family. Now that I know the truth about how to prevent diabetes and what to eat, I am grateful I looked into it more closely. Everything that is true about nutrition takes time to reach the public but eventually it does. I am grateful to you for your part in getting the word out.
8:26 pm on October 12th, 2007
Thank you for sharing, Kevin.
I am simply appalled by the “health care” industry today. People don’t even stop to consider what they are doing to their bodies, and, hence, their entire lives. I wish that people would open up their minds, think for themselves, and stop believing all of the lies they are spoonfed every day.
I’m in high school, and in my Human Anatomy and Physiology class, the teacher actually said, “Pizza is one of the best foods you can eat!” I wanted to scream right then, but I bit my tongue and quietly endured her misguided lecture.
My mom just told me today that she was watching Good Morning America, and they were all talking about how they were getting the flu shot, and that anyone who didn’t get the shot was crazy.
Then I watch tv and see commercials for the HPV vaccine, which has not been proven effective and actually causes more damage.
It sickens me. The public is being used as a bunch of lab rats to test out these drugs, until enough people complain (or die, sue, etc.) for the companies to end production. Of course, the companies then just change an ingredient or two and out it back on the market under a different name.
Okay, I’ve ranted enough for now.

Dear Kevin,
Thanks for your Charles Manson-like scrawl all over the Astra Zeneca ad. It made your rebuttal so much more professional looking. As an employee of the “health care industry” I am automatically disqualified from being able to offer my patients any valuable information other than my own experience of the last 15 months as a raw vegan. It is therefore difficult to refer them to folks who would rather rant childishly than offer a serious, academic refutation of the sinister drug company. Kevin, we in the raw community look to you for guidance and encouragement. Please help us.

I’m not surprised….I work with two diabetics, both of which are advised by their family doctors, that soda is a reasonable way to boost their blood sugar levels. I think this type of “trusted” advice will diminish as the masses become more and more aware of healthier nutritional/lifestyle choices. Sadley this takes time (due to media supression). Unfortunately, as long as doctors are paid to prescribe, without reasonable, legal access to reasonable alternative treatments, this type of thing will be hard to stamp out. Sad fact is, a lot of doctors I’m sure, repeatedley treat patients who are admittedly not willing to change their eating habits, and thus unhealthy foods are recommended, whilst the portions are somewhat “controlled”.

I know couple of friends with type I diabetes. They watched their diet and exercised regularly. No more diabetes. In my opinion, diet and exercise is the best medicine.

Dear God….what is ‘American’ medical science thinking?? When will people realize that altered grains of any kind are acidic/toxic for the body? When will we awake from our slumber and realize that when man alters food it becomes of little or no value to our bodies? How can people looking for a cure for something continue to look in places that continue to pour out failure? Think outside the box people! Stop altering, cooking, and ruining food. Throw away the microwave and the stove. Care about your health….or at least care about your children’s health!!!!!!!!!

I must agree with Susan RN above. In order to be a credible vehicle for change the rantings need to stop. While I agree entirely with the outrage, practical alternatives need to be offered. I have type 2 diabetes and I have found it very, very difficult to find good credible information to support my raw food lifestyle. I cannot afford 8 to 10 thousand dollars to go to Dr. Cousens clinic nor, I suspect, can most others who need the information. Please put more of your energies into being proactive rather than reactive (and without trying to make a buck off of every desperate person out there).

Kevin-THANK YOU for what you do! My daughter has type I diabetes and we are trying many things(including diet changes and herbs) and praying for her healing. The “experts” that we must see every 3 months(or we won’t be able to keep getting prescriptions for her insulin) were more than willing to give us a nice fat book with nutritional facts for every fast food joint known to man. Not that we ever used the book! They have never given us an ounce of sound nutritional advice. I have learned that on my own from people like you. Thank you! I would like all of the people reading this to remember the value of your teaching in this diabetes article. I know that nowell(who talks about 80/10/10) didn’t care for it, but we must remember that multitudes of people still trust what Astra Zeneca and other drug companies tell them. Docs are spoon fed their info from the drug companies also. We(raw food folks and health advocates) may be very well aware of this, but the average public is not. I feel that Kevin’s piece is of huge value for all the folks that don’t know the truth and it is our job to let them know.

The first book by Victoria Boutenko (I think it’s Raw Family) gives a report on how her young son’s Type 1 diabetes disappeared on a raw food diet. Then her son and daughter wrote a cookbook on raw food called Cooking Without Heating. Both easy reads.
I went to a nutritionist in August because my whole family and heritage on both sides are diabetic (except my mother is hypoglycemic). She suggested lots and lots of carbs 5 times a day. I followed it and started feeling sick, plus I started eating compulsively. I’m now transitioning back to simple raw. Cravings are disappearing. She had a small manual with all these pictures of fruits and veggies, but she was recommending starches and fruits not veggies (not enough carb grams). She’s a nice person and intelligent. But she’s not thinking independently. I’m sorry I wasted the month following her program.

I am a type II diabetic. I drink fresh raw vegetable (with apple) juice in the morning, and try to do raw for lunch, and then eat a reasonable dinner with my husband, starting with a healthy tossed green salad first.I am handicapped and can’t walk, but I try to stretch in my chair. I have an A1C of 5-6.I try to grow most of my veggies in the summer, and buy organic when available. It took me a long time to make these changes, and am still working at it. If my doctors had told me I could get healthy and control my diabetes, I would have done it years ago.
1:01 pm on September 10th, 2008
I am Type 2 diabetic. I still don’t really take care of myself as well as the doctors say. But I have made my own methods and collected enough data to know what works for me. Question is, is it worth doing what the doctor says since when I walk into the office and am handed a marketed pamphlet like the one in this article? I think not. How much does the medical field know about diabetes anyways? I am 100% sure that the chemicals we eat in the food we eat are responsible for our health today. I don’t blame McDonalds for making a BigMac but I do blame them for putting in extra chemicals to alter the meat and the cattle which the meat came from. Why is it that the FDA will not let medications from other countries come in to the US for help with diabetes. My sister who also has type two has seen success in control after visiting India and obtaining herbs grown for the purpose of diabetes control China and Indian medication has been around for thousands of years modern medicine has just crossed 100 years. These big businesses including the FDA are out to make a buck and at the cost of our lives. I sometimes feel like we are just guine pigs here in the US to have different products tested on us. Pepsi I heard does not put corn syrup in sodas around the world just in US.
FYI Groceries stores all carry:
1. Sugar pumped products
2. Fruits (chemically altered)
3. Vegies (chemically altered)
4. Meat (chemically altered)
So how different really is it in the long run to eat then fast food? One just gets you quicker then the other from what I see.
Hopefully the next generations will be better educated about what they put into their bodies.
